Why doesn't my Macbook Pro disk drive work?

I used to have an old white MacBook and that disk drive didn't work as well as some other problems... the people in the Apple Store couldn't fix it and so gave me a free upgrade to a MacBook pro (great, right?!).
Everything on it works perfectly except for the fact... that the disk drive doesn't work, just like on my old one.
When I go to put a CD/DVD in (I've tried many incase it's the actual disk) nothing happens whatsoever. Nothing pulls the disk in, and there is no icon on my desktop/Finder to let me know it's recognised. If you push it all the way in it gets stuck and there is no way to eject it... It's as if there isn't a drive at all?
It doesn't make much sense because my MacBook Pro is brand new.
Taking it back to the shop causes a lot of hassle and usually when I get it back again, something else is broken.
Maybe I'm just cursed...
Any advice on how to get it working? I've tried the trouble shooting, it doesn't help.
Thanks!
Jess

Hi, I have tried those things, bit nervous to try the Power Manager reset - apparently it can cause changes to your data?
I tried the SMC and no different.
I'm a bit anxious about bringing it in for service again, because with my old MacBook we had to go to London and back five times, and each time we collected it the people had fixed the initial problem, but broken something else in the process. I was without a computer for almost a month!!
Right now I'm in my final year of studies and need my computer constantly. Can't afford to survive without it whilst it's fixed.
Is there definitely no other option?

  • Why doesn't the Macbook Pro's battery life last?

Why doesn't the Macbook Pro's battery life last anywhere near 5 hours, as advertised?  This is my second one and it lasts 2.  It's false advertising, and Apple doesn't seem to making a big deal or know anything about it, which i'm sure they do.  Since their general practice is to deny problems exist in all their products, i'm here to make it known that the most recent Macbook Pro has a severe battery issue and it needs to be addressed.
I'm running OS X 10.8.3, Bluetooth is off, and haven't installed any third party software.

My MacBook Pro is over a year old and still gets 2.5 to 5 hours, depending on how intensively my application activity is hitting the CPU and disk. Remember that battery life depends on usage and component loads. You could get 1 hour editing HD video since it would hit all cores and slam the disk constantly, or 8 hours in a cabin in the woods with wifi and Bluetooth turned off, only writing text files, and with the backlight turned down and no disc in the drive. You should check Activity Monitor to make sure you don't have some processes using unusually high amounts of CPU for long periods of time (like browser tabs running Flash ads in the background, chewing up CPU and battery power without even being seen).
Like mende1 says, there are not huge numbers of Mac users getting only 2 hours, or the world would have heard about it by now and MacBook sales would be down. If you are only getting 2 hours there is something going on local to your machine or usage habits.

That's not strictly true. Apple has often announced updates or repair/exchange programs to address various problems that had come up over time. Maybe not always, but it does happen. They also have often helped me and my friends when we brought in Macs that were out of warranty and had problems. They had no legal obligation to work on our Macs for free, but they did anyway.

  • Why doesn't my Macbook pro come with iPhoto or iMovie? I've already tried

Why doesn't my Macbook pro come with iPhoto or iMovie? I have everything updated to the fullest capacity. Still..nothing..Help me!

If you erase the MacBook Pro and made a clean install, see this document:  OS X: About OS X Recovery  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X
If your computer came with OS X Lion or later and you erase your hard disk and install OS X, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Choose App Store from the Apple menu.
Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • Why doesn't my macbook pro let me update certain applications? It says "You have updates available for other accountsTo update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.

Why doesn't my macbook pro let me update certain applications? It says "You have updates available for other accountsTo update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.

it's also likely that you used two different apple IDs to purchase apps. if that's the case then you simply have to log out of your app store, and log into the other account to update the apps.
from experience it's not possible to syncronise purchased content from two different accounts. but you can always give Apple a call.

  • Why doesn't my MacBook Pro have this MacBook feature????

I noticed that on my new black MacBook, under the System Preferences>Trackpad menu in system prefs, there is the option to "Use two fingers" on trackpad to simulate a double-click. This is brilliant from Apple, but Why doesn't my 2.0Ghz MacBook Pro have this option in the Trackpad preferences??
My MacBook was signficantly cheaper than my MacBook pro. I wonder if we can expect this feature to be active on our MacBook Pros as well as the MacBooks. Seems like a dumb thing to leave off the high end laptop...
Please Apple, Please activate the Two Button trackpad click on our macbooks via Software Update.

I'm not sure if this will make you feel better or worse, but check out my thread about the issue here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=488829&tstart=0
To sum it up: I was in the Apple store a few days ago and I played with a 15" MBP that HAD the right-click w/ 2 fingers feature, which I thought was strange since people on here said it didn't exist on the 15" ones. Apparently, the machines in the store (or at least some of them) are running a newer build of OS X, either a newer 10.4.6 than we have access to, or a pre-release developer version of 10.4.7. Regardless, it seems 10.4.7 will add this feature, as was mentioned by a developer in that thread above who has the pre-release version of it and confirmed that his 15" now has that feature.
    So:
Good news - it will work eventually, when they release 10.4.7.
Bad news - you can't get it right now unless you're an ADC member.

I have a Macbook Pro 3.1 with Mavericks Installed on it. I think either the wake on lan is causing problems because it will randomly run its fans and the sleep light will go solid. I open the lid and the screen is black on my other Macs I hit command and it wakes up. On this Macbook Pro  it doesn't I have to do a hard power rest to get it to turn on. There are other times when it is still a sleep and the light is blinking that it will wake up. What can I do to fix this issue?

  • Why doesn't my macbook pro open pdf files from internet?

Nothing happens after tab opens when i try to download pdf files from websites to my macbook pro..any ideas as to what needs to be done to resolve this issue??

What browser?  If you're using Safar, do a reset on it from the main menu.  Your Mac should have a native PDF viewer that has a plug-in in Safari to allow for this.
Or you could always load up Adobe Reader off Adobe's website and work with that after you install it.  I'd try the browser reset first.  Be aware that it'll purge your history, etc.

  • Why doesn't my MacBook Pro recognize external microphone?

I have MacBook Pro that I purchasd 1 year ago.  Have tried 3 different headsets by 3 different companies and the microphone is not recognized, my voice keeps going through the internal microphone, even after changing the settings.  One had a jack connection, one was wireless USB, and this 3rd one is wired USB.  I tried the wired USB on my old white MacBook and the microphone worked.  So how can I get the microphone to work on this laptop?  Must be missing something obvious.  Thanks.

    Hiranoyama,
Is this a USB headset? Or are you plugging up to the input and output ports (if you have both)?

  • Why doesn't my MacBook Pro recognize Blue Yeti microphone?

I have a Blue Yeti microphone and when I plug it though USB to my MacBook Pro I can't find it. I have my internal sound input only.

You're looking at the Sound input in System Settings?  Should simply work.  If you plug headphones direction into the Yeti, do you hear anything?

  • Why doesn't my Macbook Pro recognize my external blu ray drive?

I bought the drive and the macbook brand new earlier this year.  It is a Pioneer BDR-XD05W.  Usually I have to plug and unplug at least two times before the computer recognizes a connection.  Restarting doesnt really seem to have any effect on frequency.  Trying to think of more information to add...but I really just want to know why the macbook doesnt recognize this accessory correctly.

Have you downloaded and installed the BDR-XD05W Drive Utility for Mac OS -

  • Why doesn't my Macbook Pro recognize my flashdrive?

I'm new to my laptop, I actually got it today and it is my ver first. I have used my friends' before and have even attempted to write a paper on a mac and save it to a flashdrive. I tried now and this flasdrive is not being read or recognized by my laptop. I'm sort of used to windows so I would go to my computer and check out the problem. But here it is not working. Help?

    Try this:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Cclick on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Why doesn't my MacBook Pro doesn't recognize my cameras or iPhone when I plug those in at a USB-port?

Even installing the Nikonsoftware of my camera didn't work. I've no problem connecting those equipments to my netbook with windows, but my Mac doesn't recognize either of them.

Check to see if the Mac sees them at all by opening the utility "/Applications/Utilities/System Information"
Then select "Hardware > USB" (on the left).  You can refresh the view by selecting the menu item "File > Refresh Information" or typing <CMD>+R.
Your should be able to see the devices in this list which will confirm hardware works-- USB ports are good, cables etc.  If you have installed the software try restarting.  Also try OTHER usb ports on the notebook.
After that try re-installing the drivers AFTER you make certain they are released for your version of the OS.
