Why doesn't my Thunderbird allow me to go to my web browser (Google) from a link in a message? Using Windows XP, and Google browser

For the past couple of day I have not been able got to links from Thunderbird to my web browser. I am using Google browser, this is with all my email providers, Google, Yahoo and Windstream. I am not sure when the update was installed.

Why doesn't Disk Utility allow me to select an image or movie to burn? Everything is greyed out, even files.

You cannot burn a movie with Disk utility - you need a burn application which will encode, author, and render the files so you will be able to watch the movie in any DVD player. There is iDVD (still available within the retail iLife 09 or 11 disks available at online resellers or ebay, amazon, etc), or Roxio Toast or Burn (free, but very basic), or google for others.

Here's what's going on in the catalog you sent me, "Joel & Caitlin's Wedding". There is the keyword "gwenn", which is explicitly assigned to 7 pics. But keyword "schwartz" has a number of synonyms, including "gwenn", and it is assigned to 25 pics. There is no overlap between the two sets of pics.
I discovered these two occurrences by doing Metadata > Export Keywords, opening the exported file in an editor, and then searching for "gwenn". I found two occurrences of "gwenn":
gwenn
schwartz
{gwenn}
From this, you can see that the keyword "schwartz" has 9 synonyms, of which "gwenn" is one.
The filter criterion "Keywords Contain gwenn" will match the 7 pics that are explicitly assigned the keyword "gwenn", and it will also match the 25 pics assigned the keyword "schwartz", because that keyword has a synonym "gwenn".
This illustrates the behavior I mentioned above: The criterion "Keywords contains x" will match against any of a pic's assigned keywords, any of those keywords' ancestor keywords, and any of the synonyms of the assigned keywords and their ancestors.
So LR is operating correctly here, if not in a way that's easy to understand.
It appears that you are using the synonyms of "schwartz" to represent individual members of the Schwartz family. A better way of representing family relationships is to have a parent keyword "Schwartz", with subkeywords for each family member, e.g. "Gwenn Schwartz", "Joe Schwartz", "Jane Schwartz", etc. Repeating the family name in the subkeywords has a couple of advantages. LR usually only displays the "leaf" name of a keyword, so instead of showing you just "Joe", it will show you "Joe Schwartz", helpful when there are a number of different people whose first name is "Joe". Also, if you ever export your pics to other software, it may not understand the LR hierarchy and won't show the parent keywords, so again it's more informative to see a keyword named "Joe Schwartz" rather than "Joe".

Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4 and later.
You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the about:config page.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. 
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page. 
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

Why are all my keyboard shortcuts using the "Alt" key instead of the "Ctrl" key? I'm using Windows 7 and Firefox 5.0.1.

I recently downloaded Firefox 5 and noticed that all my keyboard shortcuts default to using "Alt" key instead of the "Ctrl" key (so, for example, opening a new tab is Alt + T instead of Ctrl + T).
I noticed that this is even true for copying and pasting within Firefox (Alt + C and Alt + P are the only commands that work).
Any idea why this is happening? I am running Windows 7 and Firefox 5.0.1.

Why Doesn't iMovie '08 allow QuickTime/.mov to be imported

I've been reading about others who have been unable to import .mov files into iMovie '08. Very frustrating indeed.
With all due respect, the solutions/answers that are being posted are extremely "techy" for the layman. Come On! This isn't Final Cut Pro. Furthermore, the bottom line answer is - you can't import .mov files. Earlier versions of iMovie were much more user friendly and allowed you to accomplish this task. I know that I had no problems dragging a .mov file to the clip window in earlier versions of iMovie. Why is this now such a problem? This is a major oversight in Apple's development of iMovie that needs to be resolved.
I believe that it's truly unacceptable to require loyal Apple users to revert back to earlier versions of iMovie to accomplish this task.
I demand that Apple get on this and fix it!

It is no more "techy" to expect a layman to know what kind of data is stored in a file container (MOV) than it is to expect a consumer to know what kind of media (tape, HDD, DVD, memory card, etc.) is used to store his files on a camcorder. In short, if this too much trouble or beyond the capability of the potential camcorder purchaser, then it is likely the individual should not be shopping for a camcorder in the first place. In a similar manner, if you do not understand what kinds of files your editor can edit, you should probably not be using that editor.
Furthermore, the bottom line answer is - you can't import .mov files.

This is the crux of your problem. All previous versions of iMovie performed or attempted to perform an automatic conversion of non-edit compatible, fully supported QT compression formats to edit compatible compression formats as part of the import process. iMovie '08 does not do this. iMovie '08 can edit DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, as well as, supported profiles of MPEG-4 or H.264 content. The application assumes that if you import a DV file that you want to edit the file natively in DV. So it does not arbitrarily convert the file to one of the other compression formats behind your back as iMovie HD might do. If this auto conversion process is what you value most in your editor or you don't know and don't care what types of files can be edited, then download and use your free copy of iMovie HD v6.0.4 which is readily available to all iLife '08 owners. iMovie '08 is simply "not for everyone" and even the people who use it will admit that it is not the best tool for all projects.

You consider this an "oversight." That's your opinion. I disagree and firmly believe the application does what they wanted it to do. But this is beside the point. There is no "reverting back to earlier versions of iMovie" since the iMovie '08 application is not an update or upgrade of any previous "version" but rather a totally new editing concept with all new code and a totally different look that "just happens to share the iMovie name." This is also not the forum to use to "demand" changes to an Apple product. Use the application's built-in "Provide iMovie Feedback" menu option to access the official form in which you may express your dissatisfaction, submit an enhancement request, or make a "bug report."
I personally prefer the ability to edit multiple forms of content within a single project but if you don't, you could always request a compromise of sorts. To wit, you could simply request that an additional import module be added which allows users be given the option to designate a specific project format (e.g., DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264) and have any content not already in that compression format be automatically converted to that format in much the same manner as the current version of iMovie HD does. However, this does seem to defeat the purpose of being able to do "native" edits in multiple formats within a single project and I suspect you will likely then complain about the time it takes to convert to some of the format choices or object to the default settings employed for QT file level conversion.

Yeah, I don't think it's a money issue...especially since their current plans include unlimited minute use. It may be more that that's just the way the system is set up and not everyone understands or knows how voicemail works. It could also be that you're one of very few complaining about it, hence the majority wins. It's never bothered me as it's always been there.
It's true that you don't have to use Verizon's voicemail service. I use Google Voice myself. It let's me create multiple greetings, even for specific people. It also allows you to choose an alternate number to reach your phone on case you have a situation where you don't want to give out your personal number. You should give it a shot. My counterpart in Japan is making HTML Help. I have supplied him with our procedures for completing this task, which includes linking (not importing) FrameMaker docs. He tells me that this is not an option for him. The only files he's able to link are Word documents, and that the FrameMaker option is either greyed out or not there (not sure which one). Therefore, he has no choice but to import the FrameMaker files.
We're having these discussions because he can't get pagination to work. So is there any chance that not being able to link FrameMaker documents has anything to do with his pagination problems?

Yes, that's what I mean - you're ok; they're not, because they're missing the integration provided by the TCS.
I remember somebody asking RJ Jacques during his FM to RH webinar if you could do linking with the individual products - "no go," he replied.
Importing works fine (although some weird stuff can pop up if your FM docs consist of a book of books).

I have Comcast set as my home page. For some reason every time I open my browser now, I have to log in. After I log in I check the box that ask to be remembered, but it never does remember me. This use to work in the past. Is there a setting someplace for this?

* Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
* You need an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep that cookie, especially for secure websites and if you let cookies expire when Firefox closes
* Make sure that you do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"

I've been trying to add a playlist to my new iPhone and after I've plugged the phone in to the computer, my device shows up but doesn't light up when I drag a playlist over to it. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you may have a hardware problem, like the proximity sensors failing (they turn off the screen when you put the phone to your ear to prevent accidentally tapping any of the icons). You could try resetting it to see if that helps: hold the on/off and home buttons simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple logo (ignoring the red off slider that appears first), release and wait for the phone to restart. If the problem persists take it to the Apple store for evaluation.
