Why doesn't OSX hide its files?

Greetings!
After surfing the boards for the last couple of years I have come to the conclusing that too many folks just move files, apps, folders and the like too much. (We probably got that from OS9) Why didn't the programmers for OSX "hide" all the system files that shouldn't be moved around? I see a lot of "oh yes I did move this library to there" or I changed this or that. Looks like they would have made it more difficult for newbees to mess things up. Tom

Hi Tom,
Darwin is the operating system and much of it is hidden. You don't see the mach_kernel or directories (folders) such as bin or sbin in the Finder. Then many files in the System directory are wrapped in bundles. Bundles are a way to present many files as one. A bundle is really a folder or directory. The permission model prevents your "carte blanche" perception on how system files can be moved or modified. Users must elevate their status to the root user to move or modify system files. Any modifications to the permissions model would make the OS more difficult to use. I guess the System directory was left visible to comfort users that some reference within the file system is running their computer.

    Why doesn't apple have a file of events that ties to the iCal program and the Address book file? By having that relationship it seems that you could call up all of the events tied to a customer while in the address book or likewise call up all of the events tied to a contact that was in the iCal program as a scheduled meeting. Even in the to do's you could easily look back at the events tied to an individual so as to bring yourself up to speed with what you were doing with the individual in mind.

  • Why won't cloaking hide the files?

    The title pretty much says it all. Why won't cloaking hide the files?
    I don't want to se the files I am cloaking at all when I cloak them, but they still appear, just with a red line through them.
    How do I rid myself of this eye sore?
    Thanks,
    Cy

    That much I understood. I would think that there would be some option that would extend cloaking to include removing it from view.
    In my case I use a versioning software that produces a file in each directory. (.MySCMServerInfo)
    It's a file I do not need to see or edit for any reason what-so-ever. So when the term cloaking is used I naturally think of hiding something from view, not an operation.
    I don't think I am the only person that feels this way. Or am I?

  • Why doesn't FCP open a file that QT Pro and iMovie can open?

    I have since mp4 (h.264) files that I created in QT Pro 7 exactly the same way. FCP can open 5 of them but gives a "general error" for the other two. QT Pro and iMovie can open and play all 7 just fine. What's the problem with FCP? I would expect it to be MORE flexible given its price. Instead I'm about to find myself using iMovie instead of it (imagine my frustration).
    Any suggestions?

    Dunno - are they protected files? (trailers often are)
    How big are they?
    H.264 is a "delivery" format and is not considered an "editable" format. iMovie is likely converting it to DV upon load, so that may be why it can use it. You could do the same before loading it into FCP.

  • Why doesn't CS 6 download files from camera or reader.

    I have updated CS6 raw converter to 8.2.0 but the message I get says CS6 cannot download the files either form the 7D camera or the card reader. It will download jpg. What do I need to do to correct this?

    Gidday Sheila
    My brother was having this problem with Adobe Bridge CS6 for the last two days (and using PhotoDownloader.exe directly). Why Adobe and everyone else cannot manage to use the correct terminology for this is beyond me - moving data from a device that's further down the food chain to a device further up the food chain, i.e. from a card reader to a computer, is Uploading, not Downloading ... ).
    After many trials and tribulations (he is interstate ... ), I discovered that he was uploading using the folder date method, and he already had a folder for the date in question, and a file in that folder was probably corrupt. Probably one of the Bridge data files, if the truth be known.
    I got him to rename that folder, and voilà, both PhotoDownLoader,exe and Bridge (which calls Photodownloader.exe ... ) suddenly worked perfectly.
    It appears to me that the programmer coding the error messages/error trapping was either too lazy or too ignorant to correctly code the error as an Adobe or Bridge database error, instead blaming the poor innocent card reader, of which my brother has three, all of which work perfectly ... The HDD involved had a boot-time CHKDSK run on it only about a week ago to verify its health regarding another, completely unrelated issue.
    What it boils down to is that this problem has existed since around CS2 or even PS v.7.x (and PSE, etc), without Adobe bothering to even use their heads to logically work out what was actually causing the problem. It is nothing whatsoever to do with the card reader; ACR version; etc. It's just plain lousy programming and error trapping ...
    I hope this helps you and others to understand how this problem is caused by poor programming, nothing to do with the card reader.

  • Why doesn't read the RTF file?

    Hello,
    Could anyone tell me what is the problem with the following code. It would
    read an 'rtf' file but it doesn't.
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.text.*;
    import javax.swing.text.rtf.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class Rtf extends JFrame {
    String filein = System.getProperty("user.dir")
    + System.getProperty("file.separator")
    + "BG.rtf";
    public Rtf() {
         RTFEditorKit rtfKit = new RTFEditorKit();
         DefaultStyledDocument doc = new DefaultStyledDocument();
         try {
              rtfKit.read( new FileInputStream( filein ), doc, 0 );
         } catch(Exception e) {
              System.out.println("Read error: " + e);
         System.out.println("doc.getLength: " + doc.getLength());
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    JFrame frame = new Rtf();
    During the execution the following lines are the result:
    Read error: java.lang.NullPointerException
    doc.getLength: 0
    Press any key to continue...
    Thank you in advance.

    If your rtf is made in word 2000 or newer version, rtf kit cannot read it and return null pointer statement

  • Why doesn't my "cut" audio file work?

    I tried to import an audio track to Garageband but it's a protected AAC file (purchased from iTunes) so it won't let me do it. I then tried to convert it but, of course, couldn't. Then I found this neat little thing where I can change when the song begins to play - in the information section for the song. I changed the start time and when I play it in iTunes, works perfectly. When I put it in one of my iDVD menus, the change I made doesn't work.
    I'm trying to "cut" the beginning of the song so it starts playing where I want it to.
    Anyone? Thanks

    Since you purchased the song and are using it for your own personal use, the workaround is to put it in a playlist and burn the playlist to disc from iTunes. That version of the song is more useful.

  • Switched from Mac to PC - why doesn't PP load quicktime files?

    I switched to the dark side - I know - could have been a big mistake, but I can't afford a Mac Trash Can so I build PC, loaded it up and moved a fairly simple PPro project into it and loaded it up.  Half the Quicktimes won't relink giving me errors that there is no audio or video stream.  Others load in as audio only files so the linking fails.
    Any clue how to fix this Quicktime issue?
    I have installed QT Pro and its up to date.
    thanks, Rusty

  • Why doesn't Adobe do its job? I am really getting pissed

    On Mac there is still the ghost of the Creative Cloud app roaming in Mission Control! Since how many years does this bug exist???? This is unacceptable.
    AND WORST OF ALL: Now Adobe Creative Cloud even disturbs my launch pad!!! With the latest update I get a undeletabe(lol) folder named Adobe Creative Cloud_2.9.0.465 (misc) with two undeletable apps inside of it!
    Every new creative cloud update f'cks up my system.
    I demand an explanation
    THESE BUGS EXIST NOW FOR YEARS AND ADOBE DOESNT CARE AT ALL
    What has QA got to say about this?!?
    Have your developers no dignity and pride in their work??
    Do the managers and head of departments do not care either???

    Well I'm sorry to say but you're wrong, just tried signing up with a dummy account. See the screen below. Clicking on the "Accept" button takes you to the payment screen, with NO request for confirmation of previous Adobe packages.
    This is an offer being made to NEW customers, period. No previous allegiance to the brand. My point of view stands, Adobe should really step up and offer something in return to those customers who've been paying full price for CC since the beginning. This $30 introductory rate shouldn't be offered 3 years in, CC isn't some break-out thing trying to gain traction anymore, it has a massive install base. This is spitting in the face of people who've always been on board. kglad

  • Why doesn't OSX support S.M.A.R.T for external FireWire drives?

    Can someone explain the logic in this to me?

    The SMART protokoll is implemented on a very low level between the IDE/ATA interface controller and the actual harddrive. To simplify, the problem with external drives are that they have thier own IDE/ATA controller which 'converts' a IDE/ATA harddrive into a USB or FireWire unit. Thus all the computer can see is a firewire or usb unit and not an IDE/ATA interface unit which implements SMART. For SMART to work 'across the bridge' the external drive IDE controller would have to pass along the information somehow.
    For internal drives the IDE/ATA controller is integrated on the motherboard and can toggle SMART functionality on/off for different devices. My guess is that most IDE/ATA controllers in external chassis have SMART-status switched off in order to offer higher compability (Not all IDE devices support SMART).

  • Why doesn't Adobe reward its existing customers?

    I see today Adobe once again is offering 40% off new customer's first year subscriptions. This is extremely frustrating. As someone who signed up for Creative Cloud within the first month of release, I've been paying the full price for the last three years.
    Adobe should reward their customers who have been on board since the beginning. It's frankly insulting that the people who have kept them going in the early days when they faced a lot of scrutiny and backlash for switching to a subscription service are still bankrolling them 3 years in, while they continue to entice new customers with a huge annual discount. It was understandable when Adobe offered that deal early on to build their install base. They said very clearly back then it would be a limited time offer. Yet they've made the offer multiple times now and it continues. I'm paying $600 US a year while new people pay $360.
    I really hope other users in the same situation comment on here and encourage Adobe to reward those customers who have been on board since day one. Honestly if they don't, I'm just going to cancel my renewal and sign up at the end of May under my wife's name. A loophole that will work, but frankly I don't think we should need loopholes to save money for a service by a company that presents a strong image of customer loyalty.
    Hope Adobe's listening and others will agree with me here...

  • Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?

    Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?  I copied these files to my iMac from an old PC laptop that no longer has internet access.

    After downloading via iTunes, I move MP3 files from the default iTunes podcast folder to another folder (on an a external disk), I also change the name of the file and I change some MP3-tags.
    You download from the iTunes store, delete the podcast, mess with it, move it around, rename it, change the tags then try to add it back to iTunes?
    I want all my files in one index, the iTunes Music Library
    In iTunes, right click - get info, click the Options tab and set *Media Kind:* to Music.

  • Why doesn't Aperture 3 recognise RAW files from my Fuji F550EXR?

    I have just bought a Fujifilm F550EXR, partly because of it's RAW capabilities. I am an existing Aperture 3 user (Canon 5D Mk II) and have found it very good at working with the RAW files from that SLR. After shooting some test shots with the F550EXR, I now find that Aperture 3 doesn't recognise them. Surely Fuji's RAW file format has been around long enough for Apple to incorporate it into it's RAW converter. Why doesn't Apple support Fuji RAW files?

    Hi all,
    the problem still exists..
    Aperture still does not support this RAF (I recently bought a Fujifilm F550EXR)
    Others do..
    I've just tested Adobe Lightroom, works great
      with both, Fuji-RAF and NEF format (of my Nikon D80)
    even free picture software does support this Fuji-RAW format
    - e.g. "rawker", http://raifra.fh-friedberg.de/Mac/index-en.html
    so its hard for me to understand, that the missing cooperation between Fujifilm and Apple is the problem.
    I think, Apple regards it as too much effort to implement this format for (in relation) so few cameras..
    Aperture 2 had no backup function for some month, and Apple did not care ..
    (too much effort, too?)

  • What's the searchplugins folder and why doesn't its content show up in the Manage Plugins menu?

    Today on my first Search bar attempt, my search page got redirected from Google to www.bigseekpro.com, which I had never heard of. I checked my Plugins and Addons, it didn't show up there. But my home page had also been hijacked, from the tabs I normally go to, to only go to this new page. I did find in C:\uerdatada\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles\cawypqyo.default a new folder created a few moments before, \searchplugins, and in this a file search.xml, which contained xml commands to redirect the search activity.
    These look suspicious: the first command sets xmlsn:os to "http://a9.com", which I can't seem to find anything on with whois or tracert; bigseekpro.com itself traces to its registry at godaddy.com, but that's about all I'm finding.
    If this is a legitimate place for Firefox to look for a plugin, why doesn't the Firefox plugin manager tell me it found something there? And why couldn't the Help articles on "Search not going where you want it to" also tell me about this?
    Any ideas? Am I right to be highly suspicious of this behavior?

    Search engine plugins are kept separate from Add-ons (Extensions, Plugins, Appearance). Search plugins, both the default search engines supplied with Firefox and those that you install will be shown in the Search Bar (see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_Bar Search Bar]).
    The folder '''''searchplugins''''' in your Profile folder ('''the path you mentioned''') is for search engines '''''added by you or something that you have installed'''''. You can remove any found in the Profile folder in the '''''searchplugins''''' sub-folder. The items there '''''may''''' make/have made changes to other search functions in Firefox.
    *Are searches from your '''Location Bar''' going to the place and/or search engine you expect?
    *Are searches from your '''Search Bar''' going to the place and/or search engine you expect?
    '''''The default search engines included with Firefox''''' are not in that folder in your Profile, but are located in a folder by the same name in the Programs folder where Firefox itself is installed. See [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory Finding the Installation directory]
