Why doesn't Photoshop always generate a layer mask

I believe it was in CS4 that Adobe expanded the use of automatic layer masks ... perhaps it was with adjustment layers (I'm not quite sure)
I don't know about others, but it would save me considerable time in the long run if every new layer, (whether it is generated as a copy, from a plug-in, as a cut, or as a new blank layer) recevied an automatic layer mask. It takes no file space, but more often than not I find myself needing one. It sure would be nice to jump right into masking rather than having to first create the layer mask. Why did they stop at adjustment layers?
Am I alone in this?
thanks

Adding layers like Text, Raster and smart objects never have had automatic layers mask added.  Adding adjustment layers always came with an automatic layer mask until CS4.  Adode introduced bugs in CS4 when they added the adjustment panel these bugs have been carried forward into CS5 and CS6. Adobe added two options in the adjustment panels fly-out panel.  These options are designed to be global, not just adjustment panel options.  These options only work sometimes when changed from their default settings.  When changed from their default settings they try to change Photoshop historic default operation.  When you change Photoshop default operation Action, Scripts and Plug-ins that add adjustment layers may not work correctly.  Adobe should fix Photoshop and remove the two bad Adjustment Panel fly-out options. The Adjustment Panel fly-out menu option to not add Layer masks can not be safely set, same goes for the option to always clip added layer mask, if you use Actions, Scripts and Plug-ins that add adjustment layers.

Why doesn't Photoshop touch ask for access to local photos on my iPad so I can grant access and edit?

That's odd. Does this mean that you want to have the request or that you can't see the photos even though you enabled it over the privacy/photos?
If you enable it - it's not necessary to get the request. If you want the request the safest way to get it back is to reset the privacy settings by going to iPad settings/General/Reset/Reset Location & Privacy

  • Why doesn't Photoshop CS5 automatically scale strokes and effects?

I am looking everywhere for why Photoshop CS5 doesn't automatically scale strokes and effects. I could've sworn there was a preference in CS4 but there's nothing resembling this in CS5. Driving me crazy!
Whenever I do a Free Transform, the effects are completely out of whack and force me to waste time resetting them individually, layer by layer. I used to be able to grab any object or group of objects, do a transformation and Photoshop automatically recalculated. If anyone has a tip on how to avoid the annoyance of having to go layer by layer and forcibly adjusting that would be great.

Layer style effect setting are in absolute pixel size values so if you change the scale of a layer the style size remains the same. You can edit the layers style effects after tou do a transform on the layer and change the absolute setting. If the layer has been rastersized or flattened you can not. I have request that Adobe add support for relative settings like inches, cm, mm etc which is relative to the documents dpi resolution. This would be very helpful for recording actions.
However photoshop can scale existing layer style for you when you use Image Size there is a check box.  If you need to scale a single layer and have its style scaled you need to do it in a round about way. Convert the layer to a smart object. Then instead of using transform double click on the layser smart object icon in the layers palette.  Photoshop will open that layer embedded smart object in Photoshop for you to work on it.. Use Image Size to resize the layer up or down in size and check resample constrain and the scale style check box.  Then use menu File>Save.  Photoshop will then update the embedded smart object in the smart object layer and you can close the document Photoshop opened for you to work on the smart object.

  • Photoshop Generator: Unbound Layer Mask do not render correctly

I'm a huge fan of the Generator feature in Photoshop CC. However, there seems to be a problem with layer masks: If you unbound the layer mask from it's content layer, the generated images will not match the actual image. It seems, that the layer mask is positioned in different way.
    Correct

    Is this the expected behaviour?
I'm using the latest Photoshop (14.2.1 x64 on OSX 10 Mavericks)

    David,
I assume you mean in the edited PS TIFF file:
In different cases I have either:
    A. A TIFF file with layer a layer mask
    B. A TIFF file with multiple layer masks
    C. A TIFF file with an alpha channel mask
    D. A TIFF file with multiple alpha channel masks
    E. A TIFF file with any combination of the above
the outcome is the same, they all do not display correctly in Aperture. It does not seem to matter if the file was opened in PS from Aperture via the open with external editor command or if it was worked on outside Aperture entirely then imported. I do have maximize compatibility in PS checked (though I understand this is only for PSD files, though perhaps I am wrong here)
    any thoughts?

  • In RGB mode, why does pasting 50% gray into a layer mask actually put K 59% in the mask?

Create a new (small) document in RBG mode, 8 bit, transparent background.
Fill the resulting Layer 1 with 50% gray, 100% opacity.  The eyedropper reports RGB=(128,128,128).
Copy the layer to the clipboard.
Create a new Layer 2. Fill it with Green #00ff00 (the contents don't actually matter here).
Add a layer mask to Layer 2.
Bring that mask up for editing.
Paste in the contents of the clipboard.  The eyedropper reports the contents of the mask as K 59%.
    I was expecting 50% gray (or K 50%). Why did I get K 59%?
    Addenda:
I'm using CS3 on a Mac. I haven't had a chance to see if the same thing happens with more current versions of PS.
Apply the layer mask in Layer 2. Extract the transparency to a new layer.  The eyedropper gives the RGB of the
new layer as (106,106,106), with variations pixel by pixel of plus/minus 1.
Take the Difference between that new layer and Layer 1; the eyedropper gives the RGB of the difference as (22,22,22),
again with variations of plus/minus 1.
Paste the contents of the clipboard into a new layer.  The eyedropper gives the RGB contents of that new
layer as (128,128,128), both without and with a Black & White adjustment applied.
Create a new layer, add a layer mask, fill the mask with 50% gray. The eyedropper gives the contents of
the new mask as (128,128,128) (now as expected).
The 50% gray used above is just for simplicity. I'm actually interested in inserting a complicated RGB
image containing only shades of gray into the layer mask. This example indicates that pasting won't
preserve the gray levels. Indeed, when I replace the initial 50% gray with a Black to White gradient,
the differences between the initial gradient and the one in the mask range roughly quadratically from 0 at 0,
      22 at 128, and 0 at 255.

Thanks. First doing Edit > Color Settings, Gray > Gray Gamma 2.2 resulted in putting 50% gray in the layer mask.
Does changing the Gray setting have any effect on channel calculations, via Image > Calculations?
    Or what you get from
Image > Apply Image, Channel > Transparency ?
I don't see "sGray" listed among the options for Gray in the Color Settings. Is it somewhere else?

  • Photoshop creating boxes on layer mask after sharpening

I don't even know how to explain this but I hope the screen shot I've included explains it better. I have a problem with Photoshop automatically creating strange boxes on the layer mask when I'm sharpening the image, first with high pass, then unsharp mask. After I've already created a stamp visible layer on top of the layer mask. I don't understand! Can anyone help me with this?

It seems that you are saying that you applied Unsharp Mask to the top layer and it resulted in black blocks suddenly appearing in the mask of an untargeted lower layer.
Looks like image tile corruption of the mask. There's a lengthy thread where some Mac users have reported apparently similar corruption arising from using Gaussian Blur and Unsharp Mask filters. That seemed to involve Smart Objects, though, and your example has no SO.
Link: Gaussian Blur in Photoshop CS5 Corrupting files
    Here are a few comments:
"using gaussian blur, and then photoshop starts drawing blocks on my files. Sometimes it's on the actual layers themselves, and sometimes just in my layer masks."
"It's not just gaussian blurring that does it for me though (though it does); for me, it's way worse layers with masks, or groups of layers with masks that really get things tweaked out."
"Didn't even get to apply the Gaussian Blur. Saw the corruption happening while I was in the effect preview, hit cancel but it still messed up my image. Interestingly, it only effected the layer beneath the one I was attempting to apply the blur to."

  • Why doesn't Photoshop snapping consider layer effects like shadows?

When I am cutting my graphics for being used by developers, I somethings need to provide them with the shadow or any other effects, as coding those effects will not appear as nice as the effects in Photoshop.
When I use the guides or the crop tool to cut, the snapping does not consider the effects, so I need to manually zoom in and try to get the cut right with the shadow under it.
And believe me, this is so hard to do.
I would appreciate if this feature could be included.
Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
    cheers

    Hi,
Are the layers with the effects on otherwise transparent layers with only the object and effects?
Could you post a simple example?
As an generic example you could turn off the visibilty of all the other layers and then go to Image>Trim>Transparent Pixels.

  • Why Doesn't Photoshop's Opacity Add Up?

I've always wondered this but now it's beginning to bug me as I'm experimenting with layer stacking to reduce/modify noise.
If I have 2 layers at 50% opacity and a white layer underneath, those combined layers should equal 100% opacity and so I should not be able to see anything below the lower layer.
Instead what I find is that you have to stack over 15 layers at 50% before they even start to appear opaque (and at 15 they still aren't).
What's the math going on behind here? I would have assumed that, with an 8-bit image, you have 256 levels of transparency so at 50% you've got both layers at 128; 128-128 = 0 or no transparency so why does photoshop still allow something to be visible underneath that? While we're at it, why does 100% look fully opaque but 99% looks dramatically different without a layer underneath? Maybe the math is adding up but 50% opacity is actually more like 5% opaque?
Is there a blending mode I can use that will similate the build up of opacity more accurately? I'm really annoyed with the fact I can't really predict how layers are going to interact based on their opacity; I wish I at least understood the science behind it so I could alter my process to produce the results I want.

    sixthcrusifix wrote:
For some reason I was thinking that the layer at 100% was having too much influence on the look of the picture.
You were correct. If one layer is 100% opaque and the others are less opaque, then the 100% layer will have more influence than other layers. You're not going to calculate a mean image that way.
I've scored through that because I misunderstood what was meant. I guess it will give a mean of the layers if each layer has an opacity percentage of 100/n, where n is its position in the stack, with 1 being at the bottom.
Ps CS6 and CS5.1 (and maybe earlier) Extended feature image stacks that can calculate a mean image.

With a standard version of Ps, floating point 32-bit mode can be used to calculate a mean image by summing your images and dividing by the number of images. Gamma adjustments in the process are required if your source images do not have a linear colour profile because Ps will convert them to linear on opening into a 32-bit document. Let me know if you want help with that.
    Edit: see scored through paragraph.

  • Why doesn't Photoshop support read/write of .mpo files?

I am actually blown away that I cannot find a single Photoshop plugin that reads and/or saves .mpo files. Does somebody know why? And why isn't anyone talking about this format? I find it hard to believe that no one in the entire Photoshop Windows forum has ever wondered about Photoshop's complete lack of or interest in support for .mpo files.
If nobody knows how to read/write .mpo files directly through Photoshop, perhaps someone could point me to some documentation for writing a plugin for it. It's a really really simple file format--there's no reason that a plugin shouldn't be available already.
Thanks in advance for your support.

Well wave of the future or not. its beening pushed hard. That is in a way good for us the consumers.. choice is always good.
3d tv's and monitors require at least 120hz in order to function. what does that mean for people who spend all their time in front of a monitor?
Bringing about the availablilty of 120hz and beyond flat panels.
Many are people are prone to getting migrains due to refresh rates 60 hz or less, Most people getting migrains from sitting at work in front of a 60 hz monitor all day long, and do not even realize it.
I happen to be one of those people who get migrains, especially if I am doing artwork for 8 - 10 hours.
I just picked up a 120 hz monitor like 2 weeks ago cause I am a techno junky and love my toys, it is the asus one that comes with the Nvidia glasses.
There is nothing wrong with my other monitor, a 24 inch HP monitor. Its a 1920 x 1200 5ms responce time 60hz monitor.
I didn't think i would really even notice the difference between a 120 hz and 60 hz monitor.
Boy ohh boy was I ever mistaken about not Noticing. sitting side by side, to me the picture difference is amaizing. Now i have not had an oppertunity to do a real weekend artwork fest but that will come with time.
The 3d features with the glasses on, I think are very cool in games its extreemly noticable since you have more control over what it is you are looking at. I am not sure i would play a game end to end for hours and hours in 3d. i think that would likely make my head explode but we'll see about that too and if not my be running into walls when i am done since you tend to loose perseption. not to mention 3d glassses make it so you see each picture at 60 hz in one eye 60 hz in the other putting you back to a 60 hz refresh and migrains.
anyway way off subject, but to sum it up.
Some good things can come from flavor of the day fads. Grant it some bad some times does too.. i mean look at bell bottoms....

  • Why doesn't Photoshop CS6 boot into Extended Mode? My GPU is Supported!

Ok got a new laptop, quad core and went to install the trial of Photoshop CS6 Extended and it will not boot into extended mode but rather the original Photoshop mode, and I know this by the splash screen with the circles and the fact there is no 3D menu. A friend did the same on his laptop (different hardware) and his booted into Photoshop CS6 Extended. We used the same Adobe Download Assistant to do our installs. My GPU is the ATI Radeon 6520G and it has support for both Open GL & Open CL. It appears in the Performance preferences with GPU checked and Open CL is selectable in advanced. Now my question is why can't I get into Extended Mode? Why can't we just force it to do so? I have seen this issue all over the place and it seems to be related mostly to ATI/AMD chipsets. Any help is appreciated, I would like to try out the 3D options.
I even tried installing the latest ATI Radeon drivers which are beta 2.7, same issue.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Did you download the trial version of the software directly from Adobe.com?
What Chris is trying to say is that there's no known reason why the legitimate trial version from Adobe shouldn't enable the 3D features on a system that supports GPU operations, as you've said yours does:

  • Why doesn't Photoshop see my scanner or the plugin? (Mac OS)

Just loaded CS4 on Mac 10.5.7.  I downloaded and installed the  latest OSX Epson 1240U scanner software, and also copied the Twain plugin from the Adobe Goodies CD to the Photoshop > Plugins > Import/Export folder.  Rebooted the computer, power off and unplugged my USB scanner, fired it back up, restarted Photoshop, etc.   The scanner software works fine in stand-alone mode.
But Photoshop doesn't see my scanner at all.  In fact, the TWAIN plugin doesn't even show up in the plugins folder list.
Whaz goin' on?  How do I fix this?
    Thanks, Lou

    PHOTOSHP IS RELATED TO SCANNING...
NO! PS is about retouching, color-correcting, compositing, converting, etc...
How you get the image into your computer as a digital file is irrelevant to Photoshop...
Yeah, back in the day of SCSI scanners, it was a great convenience to scan into PS, do some preliminary adjustments, and save the file, to be worked on later...
You don't need to scan into PS to "Please/Win" the client. They couldn't care less about your workflow. You agree that the end result is what matters, right?
Using the TWAIN plugin to bring an image into PS, or scanning outside of PS, then bringing it in for final adjustment, makes no difference...
Except, as Chris points out, you're less apt to lose a lot of work if you do it OUTSIDE of PS.

I've downloaded the Twain driver for Photoshop CS6 from Adobe and copied the Twain.plugin file to the Photoshop Plugin directory in Applications. I'm using a Mac with 10.6.8. • Why doesn't it (always) sync?!

My main issue with the Podcasts app is simply the unreliable synchronization of playing positions between devices. Either that or I'm wrong about what it's supposed to do.
To be clear, I'm not talking about automatic sync with iTunes via iCloud - that's coming in iTunes 11 (or so they say).
What truly bothers me is something Apple says the app does and most of the time it simply doesn't.
Let's say I start playing a podcast on my iPhone and interrupt it some time afterwards. Later in the day, I pick up my iPad, launch the Podcasts app, start playing the same podcast and it resumes exactly from where it had stopped before on the iPhone. Great, it's working as advertised! Well, from that moment onwards, synchronization won't happen anymore. I stop playing it on my iPad, start playing on my iPhone and it begins where it stopped earlier in the day (as if the period when it was playing on the iPad just didn't happen). Then I go back to the iPad and it will resume from where it had stopped on the iPad. So the two devices now each has its own playing position for the same podcast, which drives me mad! Does this make sense to anyone? Shouldn't it always sync?!

Check the USB adaptor.  I have a funky USB port that doesn't work well with all cables.  Jiggle it a bit and/or try another port on the computer.

I download raw photo files from my Leica Dlux 4 and convert the Leica raw files to DNG files using CS5 Bridge.  Recently I discovered that when I try to access these DNG files in Photoshop CS4 I get a message saying 'cannot access this file'.  The files also do not show up as thumbnails in CS4 Bridge.  Do I need an upgrade or a plug in to see DNG files created in CS5 Bridge in Photoshop CS4?

    System: Windows 7
Third party plug-ins: Not to my knowledge?
    Quicktime: I believe so.
