Why doesn't the time capsule dismount

I had to reinstall Lion on my MacBook Pro but now my Time Capsule drive remains mounted on the desktop after the hourly backup.  How can I get it to dismount automatically?

Your German Time Capsule should be compatible with the Internet in Australia.  There might be an issue with authorized Wi-Fi frequencies, but thats a separate issue.
What type of broadband service are you trying to use?  Are you using a modem between the Time Capsule and the broadband connection that's compatible with the new service?  Have you configured the Time Capsule to work with the broadband service (presumably DHCP or PPPoE)?  Have you talked to your ISP to see if they need to make any configuration changes at their end to work with your modem?
Have you tried reseting the modem?  If it's new to your configuration, you may need to reset your broadband modem to convince it to connect to a "new" device.  Depending on the model of modem, that can be as easy as removing power for a few moments.  If that doesn't work, remove power and wait 15 minutes.  Further reset steps can involve pressing a "reset" button or removing a battery if the modem has one.  In the worst case, your ISP may need to edit its settings to update to the MAC address of the new router.  If they won't or can't do that, powering down the modem for 16 to 36 hours can reset the connection.

If you plan to store important "original" or "master" files and documents on the Time Capsule, then you might want to think about a way to back up those files to another hard drive.
Why? If the Time Capsule has a problem...and you have no backups....you lose everything.

  • HT1178 My Time Capsule is only blinking amber. My computer tried to backup but I don't know how to tell if it did in fact back up the data. How can I tell if it backed up and why doesn't the light show green?

Just purchased a Time Capsule. Had to call Comcast to disable the WIFI and have internet connection. The time capsule though blinks amber and the Airport Utility shows blinking amber light and has a red circle with the number 1 in it. After connecting, my computer tried doing a backup for the first time and it appeared that it was backing up and finished although I don't know how to check to make sure that it did backup. How do I check and shouldn't the light on the time capsule be blinking green and the airport utility show green?

TM will show it has done a backup.. Look at the info.. when was the backup completed??

There is an error.. probably trivial.. firmware update, default password..
Open the airport utility and find out what the error is.
Simply click the TC and see status in the summary page.. it will list all the errors and what you should do.. fix or ignore them. ie this TC has an error.. default password.. I chose to ignore.. when I "fix" the problem the LED goes green.
Here is additional TC.. it is blinking amber with faults.
Click the fault. eg default password.
You can ignore or edit .. if you click edit it will take you to the full setup where you can change the settings.
I ignored my errors and now it is green..

My wifi goes down at least once a day and I have to unplug the time capsule and reboot it and then it works fine.  Any idea why this is happening/what I can do to fix it?

I was having this problem while still using Mavericks -- it started after a Mavericks update last spring.  During the initial Yosemite beta runs over the summer, it seemed to be fixed, but after the official launch in October, I had all sorts of problems keeping connected.  Its gotten a little better, but still happens to at least one of my devices every day.  Weird that we still cannot figure out why the connection keeps dropping on some devices, but not others, and then the next day, one of the devices that didn't disconnect the previous day will disconnect, but the ones that did disconnect, stay connected.  It's just sloppy, poorly written software for technology that isn't working the way it should.  If you turn off Continuity and Handoff on all your devices, you will probably see that everything stays connected.  With those turned off on all devices, TC stayed connected to everything for over a month.  The day I turned Continuity back on, all the problems started again.  It had something to do with the bluetooth version being used, the wifi routine, and Apple's AirPlay technology not quite getting along with each other.

I just purchased a new computer that runs windows 8 and it doesn't want to recognize the time capsule as an external hard drive (ie doesn't show up under my compter).  I've downloaded and run airport utility, but it seems to have a hard time finding the time capsule...maybe one out of 10 times it will find it.
What's more, when I look under network infrastructure under the control panel, it shows my Broadcom ADSL centurylink Router...so I'm wondering if my modem/router combo is overriding the router function on my timecapsule and the time capsule is not being used as a router...
    Any help much appreciated!

In this case the TC should be in bridge mode.
Win8 is still problematic. Try using ethernet instead of wireless. I think the drivers are poor still and it is well worth having a try via ethernet if you haven't already.
Otherwise you will need to wait for apple to release bonjour for windows 8 and airport utility.. which is not out yet.
Also make sure the windows is set to home, not work or public.. even turn off the firewall.
Open windows explorer and type the TC ip address into the address bar.. (none of which is perhaps the same.. I gave away windows at vista.. shudder)

  • Why doesn't the "back" button work all the time in Safari?

Why doesn't the "back" button work all the time in Safari?

thanks for the reply. You prompted me to check and I realised it wasn't installed on my test laptop and opening in Microsoft Reader. I've installed it now and it works.
My next challenge is to prevent the mailto: command opening Microsoft Mail instead of Outlook, but I guess every user will have a different default.
    Thank you

  • Why does the Time Capsule of my neighbour appears and not mine?

Why does the The Time Capsule of my neighbour appears and not mine?  I tried everything.
Can I use the Capsule as merely a back up without making use of Wifi?  By connecting by cable to the computer?

Why does the The Time Capsule of my neighbour appears and not mine?  I tried everything.
What generation is your neighbour's and what generation is yours??
Sometimes the changes in the TC and firmware can make wireless fail.. also location is important.. the location of your neighbours might be better than yours.. his also might interfere with yours.. set a fixed channel and try the various channels.
Can I use the Capsule as merely a back up without making use of Wifi?  By connecting by cable to the computer?
Sure, but you need to work out how the network is going to work.. if you are still picking up network from wireless.. then set static ip for the TC in a different IP range.. set no gateway (router ip) or dns and it will work just fine.

  • Deleting files on time machine - why doesn't the storage capacity refresh??

    Quick question,
After I permanently delete a file off time machine (something that has storage mass ~3 G), I am not seeing the storage capacity of the time capsule refresh with a higher number. In other words, before the file was deleted from all backups, the time capsule disk read 399 G available. After I permanently deleted the backups for this 3 G file, the available storage capacity was still 399 G. I checked to make sure the file was deleted from the back-up volumes and it was. Do I have to wait sometime before the time capsule updates the available storage capacity. Just curious.

remote TM backups are stored inside sparse bundles. if you open your TC in finder you'll see it. when you delete something from a sparse bundle it doesn't automatically compact and recover the free space. TM will use it up again in future backups. you can also manually compact the sparse bundle from terminal if you really want to.
    the terminal command is
    sudo hdiutil compact /path/to/sparsebundle
you have to put the correct unix path to the sparse bundle in the command and enter your admin password when prompted for it.

  • I am connected to a time capsule both wirelessly and through ethernet...and state of the time capsule is solid green...the internet however doesn't work...The internet works fine when directly connected to my macbook pro but it won't work through the tc

I have deleted time machine preferences...restarted the modem a bunch of times, restored time capsule to it's original settings...after I first set it up in Airport Ulitity its shows a page quickly that states there is a internet problem, but the page quickly goes away before I can read what it says exaclty and states the internet connection problem is resolved...
However it's not resolved, I'm also having trouble doing a back up to my time capsule...I recently purchased a new macbook and retrieved/restore what was on the time capsule to the new computer...that worked fine...wireless worked fine...however when I tried to back up the new macbook...it would faii stating that there isn't enough room on the TC to do a back up...
I didn't end up keeping the new macbook, I was just using it/trying it out while my current macbook pro was being repaired (logic board)
Ever since I got my current macbook back from repair...my backups have failed due to their not being enough space to perform the back up...in the past the back ups would happen and old back ups would be replaced...
I think this has to do with my current computer having a new name after the repair..."Adam's macbook pro 2" vs "Adam's macbook pro"
The internet was working fine wirelessly through the TC a day ago, but it wasn't allowing my other laptop that was connected via ethernet access to the internet...I had a self assigned IP address error then...I don't have that problem now, but it's not transmitting internet at all...even though it's in a solid green state.
I have no problem completely wiping out my TC including the previous back ups on it...just don't know how to go about it...I have restored it to factory settings a bunch of times and created the network from scratch...just hasn't fixed the issue
Is there more prefences files I should delete

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

  • Why Doesnt the Time Capsule show up my New Raid Setup External HD?

I purchased a new enclosure for a RAID 1 setup (2, 1TB hard drives) and plugged it into my MacBook PRO to use disk utility to set up. The setup was fine. I then plugged this unit into the Time Capsule UBS port and it shows up on the airport application (2, 923gb drives) but does NOT show up on the network - which is what I want it to do. I know the USB port on the TC works because I have a small portable hard drive, plug that in and it shows up. I then unplug it, plug in the RAID and it does not show up on the network but does show up on the airport application.
I hope someone can help me with this.
    Skip
PS: I have a second question about partitioning this RAID 1 set up but not sure if this is the correct place to pose that question. basically, I want to partition this RAID 1 into 3 partitions; one for Time Machine, one for superduper clone image, and one for misc. extra space. Perhaps you can guide me on where to post this question.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Time Capsule - bought in San Diego USA. MacBook Pro bought in Jakarta, Indonesia. Why won't my Time Capsule set up? All I get is the flashing amber light.

I bought a Time Capsule in San Diego, California. I bought my MacBook Pro in Jakarta, indonesia where I live. I have Wi Fi in the house which I use for mail etc with my Mac. However, my Time Capsule will not set up, all I get is the amber flashing light. Could it be anything related with a production bought in the USA that may not be compatible (wireless frequency?) with a product bought in SE Asia?

Did you perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule before you tried to set it up?  That would be a requirement any time that you change locations or networks on the Time Capsule.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.  It is now reset and can be set up to connect to your "new" network.
Assuming that you have the right wall plug adapter, the Time Capsule will run on 100-240 Volts and 50-60 Hz, so it will operate just about anywhere in the world from a power standpoint.
There are some differences in allowed wireless channels between the U.S. and S.E. Asia, so use channels......36, 40, 44, or 48 on the 5 GHz band in case the higher channels are not allowed where you are.

  • Intermittently can't see the time capsule

Greetings! For the past little while, my Macbook Air is intermittently losing the Time Capsule under "shared" in my computer. We have another Macbook Air, and a couple PC's in the house and they never drop the Time Capsule. We have named the Time Capsule, and so when you look under "shared" in the working Macbook, you'll see the Time Capsule as we have named it, then when you click on it, you'll see the Time Capsule which you can click on the see the files. On my Macbook, the named Time Capsule is usually there, but now and then, it just won't show. A restart doesn't seem to be a reliable fix. It's a strange problem. Does anyone have any ideas why this could be happening? Thanks very much!

First of all the TC has to be connected in bridge usually or at least so the computers are behind it's NAT if in router mode.. does the PC get the same IP range as the TC?
Then ping the TC to make sure it is not blocked by firewalls.. if the PC is set to homegroup for instance then you may have issues. And networking is set on the PC to home.
I presume you have access to the TC setup via a Mac..
    1. The default TC name is usually not compliant with SMB network names.. nor is wireless name.. so reduce all names to short, no spaces no special characters.. passwords can be longer but still no spaces no special characters.
    2. You haven't said if access is wireless or wired but guessing wired and you want disk access, go to the disk page sharing in the TC and set WORKGROUP.. to same name as PC. Also it is usually easier to turn on the guest account to have read write access. In your work situation maybe.. maybe not.. anyway that depends on how it will be used. You can also change the security to user passwords but that will stop all existing access to files.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule without using Time Machine?

Can I just use it as a wireless backup storage device? I'm not a huge fan of Time Machine. is Time Machine the only interface for the Time Capsule?

Hmmm, I can't see where the confusion originates. The table near the bottom of www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html has one row labelled "For backup using Time Machine" and another row labelled "For AirPort Disk with a USB hard drive".
The requirement for backup via Time Machine is OS 10.5.1 or better. Time Machine is not supported in pre-Leopard (OS 10.5) nor in Windows.
The requirement for using Time Capsule as a remote disk is identified as "Mac with Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later" or "PC with Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista; Bonjour for Windows (included on Time Capsule CD)".
Doesn't that pretty much spell out that Time Capsule works as a network drive without the need for Time Machine?
Also Joe (the OP) never indicated any desire to use it with Windows so I'm not sure why all the discussion about Windows compatibility. ??
Also the quote posted by Henry seems pretty clear:
"Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."

  • My PC won't connect to the internet through the Time Capsule

I hope someone can help. I have a 4th Gen, 2TB Time Capsule with the following connected via WiFi: MacBook Pro, iPad, iPod, (2) iPhone 5, Apple TV, Playstation 3, HP all-in-one PC, and a printer.
Up until a couple days ago all of them worked perfectly. I'm not sure what happened (I didn't adjust any settings) but suddenly ALL non-Apple products will connect to the Time Capsule but won't access the internet. It is very frustrating and I can't find anything that has helped yet. They will work proper if I connect using an ethernet cable but not via WiFi like they used to.
I have unplugged and replugged the modem and Time Capsule, done a full system restore on my PC, gone through the settings on my Time Capsule (not sure what I'm looking for).
Hope someone has heard of this and can give me some advice. Thank You.

Did you happen to upgrade to 7.6.3 on the TC?
That would be pretty funny if the new firmware causes all non-apple wireless products to drop out.
I think we could get a very big fight going over such a thing.
Although I don't know the reason.. apart from that dreadful firmware.
Apple names are a problem.. why it should hit now after working fine I am not sure.
But you need to do a full factory reset to the TC.
Then give it all SMB compatible names.. (ie comply with windows networking).
That means short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
That will include TC network name, wireless names (different name for 5ghz) and hard disk share name.
You should use WPA2 Personal security. With a pure alphanumeric passkey of 10-20 characters.
Use fixed wireless (radio in Apple Speak) channels. For 2.4ghz there are only 3 non-overlapping. 11, 6, 1 and test them in that order. 5ghz doesn't usually matter so much but test down low.. say channel 40 and up high 157.. or ones near that in your country.
Tell me if you still have issues..
And go back to 7.6.1 firmware. Hold down the option key and select previous firmware if you are on 7.6.3
