Why don't animated GIFs open in Preview now?

Before updating to Yosemite, animated GIFS opened in Preview. Now, I get a box telling me that it may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize.  I have never had any issues before, and these are all images used before. Please advise.

With the bookmarks that open in the Sidebar ''(small section of the browser on the left)'', right-click those bookmarks and select '''Properties'''. Un-check '''''Load this bookmark in the sidebar''''', them click Save.
That box becomes check-marked when the user uses a button on a web page for "Bookmark this Page". Best to use the Bookmark this Page feature within Firefox, rather than buttons on web pages.

You can also use '''{Ctrl + D}''' from the key board.

  • Viewing Animated GIF files in Preview

    Hello...
I'm trying to figure out why I cannot view animated GIF files within Preview. When I search within Preview's help I get this...
*1. Open the animated GIF file in Preview.*
*2. If the window's drawer isn't already visible, choose View > Drawer.*
*The drawer contains a thumbnail image for the animated GIF. The number of frames in the animation appears in the lower-right corner.*
*3. Click the triangle beside the thumbnail image.*
*Preview shows all the frames in the animated GIF. When you click a frame, the animation stops and Preview displays that frame.*
Now at the end of number 3 it states that "the animation stops", so according to that statment Preview should be "playing" the animation until I click a certain frame to stop it. Well mine doesn't do this, SO what's going on?
Oh, my OS is v10.4.10 and Preview is v3.0.9(409).
    Thanks!

Preview in Panther did play animated gifs, although it was a bit clunky at it. Evidently they intended to fix this in Tiger, but instead they ended up breaking it completely. To play an animated gif you now need to do so in a browser, such as Safari. Preview no longer plays them at all.

  • Why doesn't animated GIF play?

I have made 2 animated Gifs one plays fine the other doesn't. When I preview in Safari all that shows is the full image and nothing happens.
It runs fine in the timeline but in save-for-web the play buttons are greyed out and all I see is the full composite image. 3 of the layers have drop shadows but I don't think that is the reason. Any ideas?

Yes GIF is selected. I have now found that it works converting it to frames. But not sure why the other one works not converting to frames. Should they always be converted to frames?

  • Why is an animated GIF not appearing on my webpage?

I have succesfully built a site that is ready for publication. The client submitted an ad for one of his suppliers that he wants to promote. It is an animated GIF from AVG.
I placed it on the home page. It looks great. It shows up in previews. When I publish the site online, the GIF does not display. If I export the site as HTML and view the files locally, the file appears as it should.
When I view the online version on Firefox, there is no GIF file visible. When I use Chrome to view the site, the GIF is there. The client says for him it's vice versa. Firefox shows the GIF, but Chrome does not.
I did not apply ANY styling to the GIF. It is only placed on the page as is.
I cannot figure this one out. HELP.
The site is located at: http://72.29.127.6/~pcbasics/
I will submit the muse file upon request.

I was wrong, it is not NTFS. According to a 700 mHz eMac running 10.3.9, it is Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled). And it mounts the desktop on the eMac as well as reading and writing. I can copy files to it and remove them on the eMac.
My powerbook 1.5 gHz on the other hand, still not mounting.
Given this error I will repost this problem under a new subject.
Why would a drive mount an eMac desktop but not a Powerbook?

  • Why would some animated gifs loop some not? (all do on other browsers)

Hello. I have 2 different animated gifs on the site I'm building with Weebly. One of them is a loop which works just fine. The other gif is made to just happen once. However, it will not replay when its page is refreshed or revisited (it does replay on other browsers). So I'm wondering what can be done to fix this. The page is http://www.backeze.com/about-us--contact.html
Thanks very much for your help ~
    Les

Yes, its there. Also, when I right click on the image and select VIEW IMAGE INFO it will replay. thx

  • Why are the animated Gifs in Firefox 4 moving so slow and choppy?

When ever I try and look at an animated gif in firefox 4, well, it's just slow and choppy. I google searched and haven't found and remedies to the situation.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

  • Why are my PDF's opening in Preview instead of Adobe?

My previous iBook opened up my PDF's in Adobe. But my MacBook purchased Nov 2012 is opening up PDF's in Preview. How can I get them to open in Adobe?

Thank you, this only works until system shut down, and on re-start, Preview is again mysteriously the default viewer for PDF's... I can repeat this "Get Info, Change All" sequence, but every time I restart the computer?  Seem odd... Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • Photoshop CS6: Why don't images automatically open in 'Fit Screen' mode, by default?

When opening an image in Photoshop CS6, in order to make the best use of the available screen area for viewing my photos, I have to either press the 'Fit Screen' option, at the top, or double-click the Hand Tool. Why doesn't the image fully fit in the available screen area automatically, when first opening? Is there a reason for images to open by default with empty space surrounding it, or is it an oversight by Adobe, in how the application works?

The view at Fit to Screen is in most cases guaranteed to be one of the WORST representations of your image you can ever see in a Photoshop window.
Sure, it has its place and it's one to which I have to resort often, but the overwhelming majority of users would be disappointed—even shocked—at the perceived quality of their image if that's the first glimpse they caught of it by default.
The only true representation of your pixels is at 100%, where no pixels have to be discarded or made up (invented).
The next best representations are the the percentage views that Photoshop defaults to when you hit Command/Control + or -.
One of those is the one that your window initially opens up to by default, and this is exactly the way it should be.
    DexterG wrote:
    …they scale to around 46% when fit-to-screen…
…and I can guarantee you that is far from optimal, without a doubt.
If your available monitor space would allow it, your images would open at 50%, or even at 100%, when the image is small enough.
The way the default view is chosen by Photoshop is perfect.  Nothing has to be changed in this respect.  This is one of the many things Adobe gets right.
Calling it "stupid" just highlights the user's lack of insight into the issue.

there are a whole bunch of quicktime files in my itunes. now when i first updated the ipod, only 1 of my quicktime files transfered and worked on my ipod. the others didn't. so i tried transcoding some of those .mov files in videora just like i do with my .avis and other junk. the "completed" product of the quicktimes were 0 bytes.
and so then i continued converting other normal files and updated the ipod once again. and the really odd thing was that the one quicktime file that worked on the ipod the first time, got a message that it couldn't be transferred to the ipod because of some reason.

  • Why doesn't Preview.app show me animated .gifs?

I made an animated .gif with Macromedia Fireworks and it opens up perfect on a Windows Platform. But on my MacBook only the first frame opens and stays still as a single image.
Once I open the .gif, in the Preview's Drawer, it shows me all of the single images that are supposed to be seen continously as an animation. But I repeat, no animation is played back.
    Help please, thank you.
    MacBook 13" Black   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This is from the preview help document. What you are seeing is what is described for preview.
    Viewing animated GIFs
An animated GIF is a graphic file that shows a short animation. Preview lets you look at each frame in the animation as an individual still image.
Open the animated GIF file in Preview.
If the window's drawer isn't already visible, choose View > Drawer.
The drawer contains a thumbnail image for the animated GIF. The number of frames in the animation appears in the lower-right corner.
Click the triangle beside the thumbnail image.
Preview shows all the frames in the animated GIF. When you click a frame, the animation stops and Preview displays that frame.

  • Animated Gif Problem

    Greetings
    I would appreciate some help.
I am new at creating animated gif's, and am experiencing a
problem with them when I try to view them in a browser.
I am working in Fireworks 2004, the following is what I do.
    Create first frame.
    Insert simple arrow.
    Create second frame
Insert simple arrow with diffrent color
Third frame same but diffrent image.
Set the Optimize Panel to Animated Gif, transparency set to
    No tranparency.
    Click on File, Export.
Type the name of the file in File Name box.
Select "Frames to Files" option for Save as type option.
In my folder where I saved the files there are now three gif
    files.
When I open the file into the following browsers IE 7, 6.0 or
Firefox it remains as a static image in the browser with no
animation, the same is for viewing it in Window Explorer Preview
    Pane.
In Fireworks however the animation plays perfectly.
I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what I
am doing wrong or why they created animated gifs are not playing in
    the browser.
    Regards
    Dave

Instead of Frames to files on export, select Images only.
    that should do it -

  • Viewing animated GIF's in Bridge

Apparently this has been an issue for a while and I don't understand why it hasn't been fixed yet, but please Adobe can you add support for previewing animated gifs in Bridge? It's ridiculous that a supposedly catch-all media browser like Bridge can't even preview this particular file type.

Agreed. Please allow Bridge to see animated GIFs in the Preview panel. We
    know
it's possible. There was a build of Bridge that supported it, then it was removed:

    Hi,
Bridge currently previews the animation in the Preview window.

  • How can I edit an animated GIF?

is there a way to add a animated GIF into your work, when I try to add one I am told that it will be a single layer. I downloaded a GIF from the web and trying to incorparate it into a web site header.

Well, you are in luck, sort of. You have all the apps needed to create an animated gif. However that does not mean that the image you download was already or not. It could be a single image.
A couple of things to go over
    1) When downloading from the net make sure you have permission to use that image before sharing with the public, as the image is protected by copyright laws in the US. (Images that state - Permission to use commercially, copyright free, common law licence - Generally are meant to share with the general public, granted that you post somewhere who you got the image from(the Least anyone can do it give credit where credit is due)
2)Since you have the Master Collection or the CS4 Master Suite, you have every app that is need to create your own works of art. Photoshop, After Effects, Premeire pro are all capable of creating animated gifs. With the latter two being easier than photoshop.
Since you have CS4 photoshop and this is the photoshop forum, we will keep it there.
The version of Photoshop that comes in the master suite is the extended version of photoshop which is require for most of the animations it can do. Though, think and am not certain that the standard version can create animated gif files.
OK, ok we got a lot of mumbo jumbo above so lets get into how to create an animated gif.
First we need to determine if we are editing an animated gif or creating one from scratch. To load an animated gif all you need to do is file>open then select the file. Simple enough.
The file will place each frame onto its own layer and if you have the animation panel open (If not select Windows>Animation ) Each frame will be placed there as well.
Lets say we are going to edit a frame or better yet introduce a new frame. In the upper right hand corner of the animation panel is a small icon. Clicking it will pop up a menu. In that menu select delete animation. Don't worry your layers are safe, it only removes the frames from the animation panel.
Now you can either change something in one of the layers or add a layer where you want the frame intoduced.
When you are done you can select that same icon in the animation panel to pop up the menu and select Make frames from layers This will place all the layers back into the animation panel. This has to happen in order to save an animated gif.
You can now use the File>save to web or File>Save to web and devices (This optiuon changed during one of the version, I don't recall so both are listed or look for something close to that)
Select Gif for the format then the save button, where you can choose a location and file name. It will automatically add a hyphen between any words that normally are spaces for the web.
OK, If you read the above, you probably alread realize how to create one from scratch. Just add a new layer for each frame and follow the steps above to add it to the animation panel and save for web.
I know it sounds like a lot, but once you have done it a few times, it actually fairly simple.
OK, Bonus round - What about After Effects and Premeire Pro?
Well both of those apps Use a timeline instead of frames. Which makes them much simpler and more powerful for animations, since that is what they are dedicated to do.
It is as simple as open the gif file, edit it, save it, done.
I won't go into how the timeline works as that would require a long , long post. But once you understand it, it is much quicker and can do way more feature wise.
One last thing, play around with it and see what it can do before commiting time to creating or editing a gif. It goes much easier once you get the hang of it.
If you have any questions, issues, etc. just post away...
Well, I got to go, I hope this helps.
