Why don't the finder windows stay the same size?
When I size a finder window (i.e. Pictures) they are never the same size the next time i open them, why?

After installing Mavericks I can no longer save a new word document or pdf by typing the name of the destination folder in the Finder window. The save button greys out. Solutions anyone?
Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you have created. If you want to preserve it, ask for instructions.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
My user folder has suddenly disappeared from my hard drive though if I do a find for it it comes up as still being there with all its data. Can drag a duplicate copy from the find window back onto the hard drive but don't want two copies there with one of them hidden. Any suggestions anyone?
Did you update to 10.9.3?
If you did then update to iTunes 11.2.1.
That is the fix for that problem.

I don't have a footer bar any more. I was going to close out the 'find' window and closed out the footer. I don't know how to get it back. Help please.
Do you mean the Add-ons toolbar (Ctrl+/)?

I've created a CD-ROM which essentially has a website on it.
I've added an autorun for PC users (assuming those guys still exist) which launches "index.html". So no worries there.
For Mac users, as autolaunch isn't an option (correct me if I'm wrong?), I want to control the look and layout of the Finder window which opens when the disc is inserted and the CD icon is double-clicked. What's the best Apple software to use to do this?
Thanks in advance.Nice to hear your story.

I use a couple of external hard disks, one with Time Machine for every day back-ups and another for occasional back-ups of large work files and videos I have purchased. It bothers me to see them sitting up there in the top right hand corner of my screen. Can I move them permanently somewhere else, into the Dock or Menu Bar say, and still have them permanently available?
Yes.
You can drag the drive icon from the desktop into the Dock.
Then you can go to Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop > uncheck External disks, and it should stay in the dock but not show on the desktop.
There are third party apps that will give you Finder-like access to things in your Menu Bar, like Download XMenu for Mac - Menubar item lists/launches apps, and more. MacUpdate.com , but I would avoid third party GUI-changing apps like this if I were you, as they tend to be problematic, and install background processes which slow down your mac. -
The new green button on the finder window makes the screen go into full screen takeover mode - alt clicking this makes it 100% height of the screen.
How can I make this 100% width and height (just like it used to be in Mavericks)?
I have 2 x 27" monitors, so the "full screen takeover" mode is not right as I only want the finder window to be on one monitor whilst I work on another.
Any ideas?! Thank you!Was about to post the same question.
Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite (about a month ago), this odd behavior has irked me.
Could it be that it only plagues those of us running dual displays? And therefore nobody else cares? -
Hi, I'm surprised I can't quickly find if anyone else is having this issue. For me it has been going on since Lion on my 13" MacBook Pro 2011 and it's still persisting in Mavericks, and even still now that I've "downgraded" to a 15" MacBook Pro 2010 with Mavericks. The behavior is odd and difficult to explain concisely. Basically, when I want to add an attachment to Mail, I'll Cmd+Tab over to Finder click and drag and Cmd+Tab back to Mail, and drop the attachment. At first it looks fine, but when I click in the New Message window where I just dropped the attachment, to move the cursor, it retreats to the background and the Mail Main Window comes to the foreground. Then, if I click on that, the Finder window that I just used comes to the foreground. Sometimes if I switched to another app before going to Finder to select the drag and drop, that other app window will appear in the foreground instead. If I click on the other app window that is now in the foreground, then the Finder window that was last used will come to the foreground. The only thing that seems to fix this switch-a-roo effect is Cmd+Tab-ing back and forth a few times, or click on the window "frame" at the top to move the window around.
The way to prevent this is to have my Mail Message window visible in the foreground side by side with the Finder window when the drag and drop occurs (this is a tedious extra step if mulitple windows are open, or to use the add attachment command in the menu within Mail. But it sure is annoying buggy behavior.
Thanks
DanielYep, I get exactly the same thing when using Thunderbird mail client on my 2011 iMac running Lion. I've been putting up with it for at least a year, maybe longer.
For me it appeared to start after a Thunderbird update, so I figured that was the cause and couldn't find a solution at the time. However I've now noticed it starting to happen in Apple Motion 4 when dragging files from Finder into a DropZone in my animations. Motion remains the active program but the Finder window sits on top until I Cmd-tab out to a third open program (ie not Finder) and back to Motion again.
This is the first indicator I've had that it's an OS X issue.
Be great to find a solution as D&D is by far my preferred way of adding attachments to emails and similar tasks. -
Why can't I move items in the finder window
I'm the administrator, but can"t move objects in the finder window,Why ?
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy the text — do not type it — into the Terminal window and press return:
ls -@Odeln Desktop; ls -@Oeln "$_"
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context. -

When I send an email from Mac Mail, why does Mail go to the background and the Finder comes to the front? I want it to stay in Mail.
Did you check your user name and password in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap your email account, tap SMTP, then tap the primary server name. Make sure the settings there are correct.

Why is there a question mark in the Finder window?
Why is there a question mark in the finder window that looks like this. When I click the question mark in displays this message.
Because the item there has been moved from its original location or deleted (there's none in that location by default), or something made the Finder think there was an item there. In either case, the question mark can be removed by control-clicking it and choosing Remove Item, or by command-clicking it and dragging it out of the window.

Why do I have question marks in the finder window header?
Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Lion I've noticed a large question mark in the finder window header. There is a smaller one beneath it, and they're both located just to the left of the search window.
Can you do a screenshot please?
Also may just grag and drop them outside the finder window. -
Multiple checkmarks in the Finder Windows menu
Here's an odd one. I've been seeing multiple check marks in the Finder's Window menu. The menu normally puts a check mark next to the front-most window. However, having more than one window checked makes no sense. More worrisome is why this is happening and what it says about the integrity of my Finder.
Does anyone have any idea why I would be seeing this and how to fix it? I haven't trashed the Finder preferences yet, but that seems the next obvious step.Terence Devlin It was not my intention to step on your tone, Sorry for that.
But.
+Pathfinder is not a System Add-on. It's an application.+
That is right it's an addition to the finder with different graphics and so it's not a modification to the standard window. What I like is a basic Finder window with just added tabs.
+Sweeping generalisation there... and you've tried them all? Really?+
Yes, I do think I tried them all and I still think they all miss the simplicity and elegance of the Finder windows. But if you know a good alternative (not pathfinder) I really would like that.
+Pathfinder brings many very useful functions to the table - that's why one might consider it.+
You are right. I do totally agree on that. But I rather work with the standard Finder window/info window , etc.
+On the contrary it "do leaving the finder as it is" - it makes not a whit of a difference to the Finder, you can even run the two side by side if you want. Changes made in the filesystem with one will be instantly available in the other. Perhaps, in trying "all those system add-ons" you didn't try them very carefully.+
That is exactly my point you end up using them side by side. Two different windows with things on different places. But I think on this point you really did not try to see what I was talking about.
+Case in point. The Pathfinder window is highly customisable and all that functionality that you don't like can be hidden away.+
Yes, But did you find a way to show all the other computers in the network in the side bar like the Finder (leopard) does? -
How can I set the finder window to open the same way every time?
Everytime I open Finder it goes back to it's default view which is just too small, but I want to set the finder columns and window so that they open the same exact way every single time. I'm tired of resizing everything.
Currently I have to resize every window and column everytime and I think my work is much slower then when I was on Windows because of it.
Is there a setting, script, file, patch, anything, is there absolutely anything I can do to actually control the Finder views and make them adjust to MY criteria and stay that way...That is a big negative. That does absolutely nothing other then close my window, next time the finder window is opened then the column widths are small again.
In Windows Explorer all your windows are customizable, how do I do this with Finder?
