Why duplicates from Save As?!!

What's happened to the Save As command - one of those I use(d) most often. Why do I get Duplicate instead? That's nuts!
How can I reinstate SaveAs across the board. (Thankfully Microsoft kept it in Office)

In the keyboard preference pane, under "keyboard shortcuts" click on the item "Application Shortcuts". Now click the little plus at the bottom of that list and type "Save As..." (Without the quotes) Then click in the shortcut box, and hold "command-shift-s" (the good old save as... shortcut)
You have to reopen open applications for the changes to take effect.
Now Save As... will be the default, and the silly Duplicate option sits underneath without a shortcut.
Accidentally, in Mountain Lion, there is also now an option in the general preferences called "Ask to keep changes when closing documents" This gives the "dont't save.." prompt back to further restore normality.

Why did Aperture just download over 500 duplicates from my camera.

Despite having ticked 'do not import duplicates', Aperture imported over 500 duplicates from my Canon 7D.
Anyone have an idea why this happened? I take it I have no choice but to go through and remove these manually.

The built-in dupe-sleuth is rather dim-witted. All it checks is file name and the date-time stamp (iirc). If you change either -- for instance, you rename files on import -- it assumes (not without reason) that the files are different (they are) and imports them.
I just shoot a separator frame each time I put a card in a camera. (Point at a light source, hold up one hand with a finger extended, and take an out-of-focus shot. Easy to pick out. Every exposure preceeding the last separator frame has been already imported.) Because I _always_ rename my files on import, I could not use Aperture's "Do not import duplicates" function.
Grouping (and then deleting) the most-recently imported dupes is easy. Select the "Photos" container, and filter for the import sessions that are most recent. You will have to add the Filter Rule "Import Session".

Why did Photo in iOS 7 start loading duplicates from my SD card even when instructed not to load them?

On a long trip, I would download the photos from my camera to my iPad in Photo. I have done this for years. In the process, I would tell Photo not to load the duplicates. Since I updated to iOS 7, Photo is now loading duplicates from my SD card ignoring the instructions not to do so. When I took my iPad to the Genius Bar, I was told that this is an iOS 7 problem they have reported. I can find no way to report it through Apple Support. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there any way to stop Photo from downloading the duplicates?

Ho are you bringing the video clips over to your computer? Are you connecting the camera or are you using a card reader? What program are you using to import the video clips?

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor. The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow. It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them. You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version). Personal preferences showing here.

Why does Preview save as PDF version 1.3 instead of version 1.7 sometimes?

I've noticed something very strange in Mountain Lion when saving a downloaded PDF in Preview. If I download a PDF to my downloads folder and open it in Preview and get info it says it's PDF version 1.7 and it's about 400 kb . If I then "save as" to my folder it saves it as PDF version 1.3 in a much smaller file save 82 kb.
Why is this happening when I use "save as" rather than just dragging and dropping it from my downloads folder to another folder where it keeps it as version 1.7 and 400 kb ?
Why would Preview save it as version 1.3 instead of the latest version of PDF - very odd?

I was sure, but I was wrong. Upon closer inspection, the "%PDF-1.3" you see in the PDF isn't the whole story. The actual version can be specified elsewhere. It seems Mavericks actually generates PDF version 1.4. Of course, that's not much difference, is it?
Generally, I think Apple is aiming for cross-platform support with the widest audience instead of all the advanced features that Adobe wants to throw in. Apple views PDF as legacy print technology. If you need more than what Apple provides, you can always buy Acrobat.
Here is an old marketing flyer from Adobe showing how much more you would get with Acrobat. It is from the Tiger era but you can see there is a whole lot that isn't implemented. But if you bought Acrobat, you would be in the position Apple doesn't want. You would create and send people PDF 1.7 files and they wouldn't be able to read them. What do you do? Tell them to buy Acrobat? It is a common theme here in Apple Support Communities whenever a new OS version arrives. People everywhere suddenly can't print, read PDFs, or do just about anything PDF related. That is because they had previously download Acrobat and it breaks with each OS update.

All is 'quite' working froma a java app.
i've only a problem with an 'jndi name search error'. I'll try to explain.
In the RPT i use a DSN connection to a sql server into a differente machine. When I open directly the rpt, all is working.
From java code, i'll open the report, but when i try to export to pdf iit tell me about an error 'jndi name search error', with the name of the DSN connection i setup.
Why? Why opening rpt all is working, but opening from code NOT is working ?
What's the difference from two opening methods? Why an .rpt opened from java cannot just open the connection like when opened from cristal report !?

The .rpt has been originally created from an ancient version of Cristal report. probably the '8'.
In an italian software called 'Business', the .rpt is populated for printing of invoices and similar docs.
My society is trying to 'integrate' our software with the .rpt used from our customer.
So we want simply open .rpt, add a new logo, set the selection for record and save as pdf.
We so bought Cristal report 2008 (v.12 ), opened the .rpt, saved (so it 's now in a supported version).
The sql server is located at 10.1.2.40, and is a Microsoft Sql Server.
In my development pc I've installed Cr 12. I added a User DSN to point to Sql server at 10.1.2.40, at right DB with username and password. Opening from my development machine the .rpt and 'running' it, it display the data. Ok !
I downloaded CR4 Eclipse 2.
I open report using the unmanaged sdk. (to access it through file system, not via RAS), Ok.
I set selection record. Ok.
I execute .export with 'PDF' for format option and here I get an exception: the JNDI name 'CPR' is not found. Where CPR is the DSN name setup into .rpt from Cristal Report 2008.
So, no, i'm not trying to using the designer from Eclipse, but from the full application. But I must use the rpt at runtime to export some rendered records.
What must I do to do this?
CR4E only supports java based connections, so it is looking for the JDBC/JNDI name and won't look at the DSN's.
How Can i setup at runtime a JDBC / JNDI connection ?
I already have a 'connection' from my code to the sql server, using sqlserver jdbc driver v. 4 from microsoft. And executing query I see the results. So i have right driver, ip, db name, user name and password
But is there a way to simply tell at runtime to my .rpt to use THIS connection? Or a similar connection...

Removing duplicates from playlists and keeping ratings.

When I first started using iTunes, I thought it was a great program. However, once my music collection outgrew the size of my iPod, I began to see it has many frustrating limits and annoyances. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me resolve the issues I'm having. If anyone from Apple reads this post, please pass this on to your software developers because I know there are tons of people having the same issues I am having (just do a Google search if you don't believe me).
1) My first method of managing my collection is to only put the files I want on my iPod in my library...this way I know exactly what's on my iPod. However, I found that in doing this, the ratings I created on my iPod were not reflected in my library on my computer. Is there any way around this? Also, I've noticed that if I remove a file from my library, I also lose its rating. I know that the rating can be stored into the id3 tag. Why is this not done??? Is there anyway around this?
2) My next method was to have iTunes automatically update my iPod from a playlist I created (the playlist had no meaning other than it was where I put all of the music I wanted on my iPod). But I soon noticed that iTunes wasn't smart enough to realize that there were duplicates (sometimes 5 copies of the same song). Which is what happens when you don't feel like taking the time to see if you've already added your favorite Alice in Chains album, so you just drag-and-drop it again. The library is smart enough to handle this (i.e., if you drag the same folder into the library twice it only adds it the first time and it ignores it the second)...why can't playlists do the same?

Depends on Why duplicates are happening. If you are adding the same file again then iTunes will make another entry. If you have the same track in different formats it may show up again with same track name.

I'm not knowledgeable with chmod under Linux, let's say if we give it full accessibility, what will be the result?
Anyway if you can see the image from file system, that already means the upload is succeed, I think you may need get some suggestion from php side to see how can we save the image with a correct permission.

Why are photos save as .jpeg instead of .jpg? Can this be corrected? In certain applications I have to manually change the ending so that the application can open the photo. Is there a setting to control to correct this?

When I mail photos (via GMail) from my iPhone they are received on my PC as .jpg files, even if sent at full resolution. Perhaps your e-mail service has imposed an attachment size limit, and in the process scales the attached picture down and alters the file extension?
What happens if you e-mail a photo from your iPhone and open the message from a PC instead of the Surface? What e-mail service are you using? (e.g. your ISP's service, or Yahoo, Gmail, iCloud, etc.) When you send the photo from your iPhone, are you selecting a reduced resolution?

It was just a hunch that MircoNetFrame was causing the problem. I disabled it as you suggested, and I still have the problem.
I just changed under Tools>Options> General - had checked "ask me every time" under downloads, so instead of asking me, FF saved the download to I know not where. It no longer saves it to the desktop, leaving a duplicate in "my documents".
In windows, I have found unless one knows the entire name of the document, one can never find anything. It isn't listed under recent ''''''__. I can't recall the nomenclature, but the
capability is ridiculous. So, I don't know where that file I just downloaded is!
I downloaded a PDF file, but this happens with all DL's. It was so easy to have them all stacked in one place and I could recall
what I had and when I downloaded it easily.
Do you have any other suggestions other that going back to the old version of FF, which I would rather not do?

You are right, usually it is wasteful, to have several master image files for different versions of the same image.
But in some situations it makes sense to me to create a second master:
If you edit using an external editor, and Aperture cannot reproduce these edits internally,
If you want to finalize your edits, because you need to ensure that these edits never, ever will get changed (for legal or scientific reasons),
If you need the same image in two different projects and you can't achieve what you want to do by using different albums (sometimes I need to do this, if I want to export a part of the Library),
If you want to create a new, smaller master from a cropped image version.
And I'd really like to hear different opinions!

Best app to remove duplicates from iTunes 2014

Hi All,
I've been trying to research the best application to sort and remove duplicates from my iTunes library. I have over 7000 songs and iTunes built in duplicate finder doesn't look at the track fingerprint, which is useful for those songs which are labelled "Track_1" etc.
Has anyone reviewed any recent products? I was looking at TuneUp, but after reading so many negative comments, I've decided not to go down that path. I would prefer a program that did most of the work for me, due to the amount of songs. Happy to pay for a good product...
I do have MusicBrainz Picard, which has done a great job of tagging, but don't remove duplicates.

Tune up is a great app. When they moved from version 2 to version 3 is when it went to crap and all heck broke loose. They shut their doors but they have since re opened and went back to developing version 2. I use that version and I am pretty happy with it as being an overall cleanup utility. I also use Musicbrainz and a couple of other utilities but in the end if you have an enormous library 20k plus then you are going to have a few slip through. I would probably go with Tuneup if I were you and a thorough third party duplicate finder. Dupe Guru's music edition seems to do a pretty good job.

How to delete duplicates from iTunes but not hard drive

I'm running iTunes 10 and have my music stored on both my NAS drive and backup drive. Each track appears twice on iTunes: once as lossless for streaming and and once as compressed AAC files for synching to ipods and iphones.
For some reason, when my PC is turned on after being turned on, the linkstation cannon be 'seen' by iTunes, and therefore if I try to play a track, 'the original file cannot be found'. If I use the 'add folder to library' option in the 'file' dropdown menu, the tracks are located again.
Unfortunately, I the last time I did this it resulted in 4 copies of each song on itunes; 2 lossless and 2 AAC.
I have 2 questions:
Firstly is there an easy way to delete the duplicates from my iTunes library so that I am left with only 1 lossless and one AAC copy, but not deleing the files from my NAS and backup drive?
Is there a way I can just store my music as lossless, but convert it easily to aa more compressed format for synching to iphone and ipod?

You can try my new DeDupe script. It should be able to get rid of the redundant copies while keeping one copy of each track in each format. See this thread for background.
I've not used the feature, but iTunes can downsample to 128k AAC on the fly as it syncs your devices. Of course you might find the process is too slow for your needs or find that 128k is too much compression.

Deleting Duplicates from a table

Its a huge table with 52 fields and 30k rows. I need to delete the duplicates based on one of the fields. GROUP BY is taking a lot of time. Is there a quicker way to delete the duplicates using SQL.

How many duplicates have you got? Do you have even a vague idea? 1%? 20%? 90%?
One way would be to add a unique constraint on the column in question. This will fail, of course, but you can use the EXCEPTIONS INTO clause to find all the ROWIDs which have duplicate values. You can then choose to delete those rows using a variant on teh query already posted. You may need to run %ORACLE_HOME%\rdbms\admin\utlexcptn.sql to build the EXCEPTIONS table first.
This may seem like some unnecessary work, but the most effective way of deleting duplicates from a table is to have relational integrity constraints in place which prevent you having duplicates in the first place. To paraphrase Tim Gorman, you can't get faster than zero work!
