Why even have film rolls?

Does anyone else think that they are a bad idea? I don't see any advantage to them. They just seem to make more work and over complicate things... very un-apple-ish.
You HAVE to import all the pictures on your camera into one roll. Then, you have to make separate rolls.
Or if you want to put some of your new pictures in an old roll, you have to click and drag, which doesn't seem to work well at all. If you have a large library and you want to get to an early roll it scrolls impossibly fast, and you can never get to the roll you want. Also, it doesn't always scroll (at least for me).
Then you'll probably want to make albums out of your pictures, which is a whole separate step.
Why not just do it like (dare I say it?) the Windows wizard? Select the photos you want to import, give them a name and a folder (or album) to store them in, and be done with it. If you want to have the same photo in different folder/album, just copy and paste.
Is it just me, or does that seem to make a lot more sense?

Hi.
Sure, Windows Wizard makes much more sense and is easier to use. Perhaps what you want is a file browser. There are many available. They let you simply store the photos on your hard drive, in your folders, how you want them. Easy.
With the film rolls, you only have to organize them once. Then place your new imports in the roll of your choice once, and be done with it.
You HAVE to import all the pictures on your camera into one roll. Then, you have to make separate rolls.
Not exactly. There are a few workflow options, and you may find one that works better for you. If you camera mounts as a drive on your desktop, you can bypass the iPhoto Import screen. Do File> Import to Library and you can navigate your camera's files, select only the ones you want, and import. If your camera doesn't mount on the desktop, use a card reader. Each import creates a separate film roll, so you could import in whatever arrangement you like. After the import, you can rename your roll to something descriptive that will help you locate your pictures later.
Or, use Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload the photos from your camera. [Image Capture's preferences determine which app opens when you connect your camera, so you can reset it if you like.] You can upload all, or choose some. Upload to a folder on your desktop, then use Finder to group into folders (for your rolls) and even rename the files if you like. Once uploaded, you can drag those folders (no subfolders, though) into the iPhoto window and they will be imported into separate rolls with those folder names. Or drag into the Source Pane, and albums will also be created with the folder names. Once copied into your iPhoto Library you can delete the original folders and files.
Then you'll probably want to make albums out of your pictures, which is a whole separate step.
That last part takes care of this.
Perhaps you are taking the term "film roll" too literally and creating extra work for yourself. With actual film, you may have had only 12 or 24 photos on one roll. With digital cameras, you might keep all photos from a 1GB card together on one roll. You can use the film roll comments to list the contents of the roll. Comments are visible when the rolls are closed in Film Roll view. I keep all my rolls closed to maximize iPhoto's launch speed. I only open the rolls I need to access.
Scrolling problems - YES, this seems to be a common experience. There are some ways to minimize them and work around them. Keeping rolls closed helps with this. More rolls fit on the screen, so it's more likely the roll you want is visible with the roll you are moving. If the target roll is still off-screen and you just can't get it selected, there is another technique. Select the photos you want to move and Command-click to select the roll you want them moved to (be sure this roll is open). Do File > Create New Roll and the photos will be combined. You'll have to redo the title, if you had renamed your roll before.
Why go through this, as opposed to the Wizard simplicity? Because iPhoto offers much more complex features than any file browser. iPhoto is not a file browser. It is a database application with non-destructive editing. You import a photo. iPhoto creates a thumbnail version, linked to your original, for efficient presentation of your library on screen. You edit, and it creates a full-sized copy, which you then modify. It keeps track of the edited version, linked to your original. Your thumbnail is also located and updated to match the edited version. If you ever wish to go back, you can always Revert to Original. The edited version will be deleted, and your thumbnail will again reflect the change. All before you can blink your eyes.
Then consider the Albums and Folders in your Source Pane. With a file browser, you'd have to duplicate your files to display them in more than one album (because album = folder). Copy and paste and be done with it, sure. But how many copies do you need on your hard drive? And how do you keep track of which ones have multiple copies and which ones don't? Things can get messy pretty fast, not to mention how much hard drive space is wasted on duplicates. With iPhoto's database, albums never create duplication; they are virtual arrangements which have no presence in your folder structure. The benefit - you can have a photo in 100 albums, with very little increase to the size of your library. Albums are an extra step, if you choose to use them. If this is inconvenient, you don't have to use them at all. But if you like the ability to create multiple groupings of the photos in your library, the ability is there.
Play with other search features, and iPhoto becomes very powerful indeed. Smart Albums can be created to compile photos based on many criteria, and they stay current with your library. With the calendar tool you can pull up photos from any year, month, and/or date with just a few clicks. Keywords can be used to include or eliminate (Option-click a keyword) groups of photos until you have just the grouping you want. [Ex: I can find all photos of my daughter, with my in laws, at a festival, NOT at Christmas, with animals....]
No one ever said iPhoto was intuitive. But if you like its features, learning the iPhoto way of doing things is a small price to pay.

  • Why even have a store?

Today I really shattered my iPhone 5.  At the gym - it fell out of my locker.  It was a mess.  Good thing there's a Verizon Wireless store right by my office.
I hurried over to the Verizon Wireless store on 42nd Street in Manhattan - the Bryant Park location - and showed them the remains of my phone.  They looked me up and learned I'm not due for an upgrade for a few months, so they gave me a card with an 800# to call and wished me well.  They weren't rude or anything, but they just aren't there to help existing customers.  I asked if I could borrow a phone, and they said I could use any of the live phones on display to call the 800#, which felt very weird.  The store wasn't busy, and I didn't understand why nobody offered a loaner or would to help me get a suitable replacement.    @bryant_park
Disappointed, I returned to my office to begin the paperwork and multiple phone calls involved in ordering an insurance replacement from Asurion.  It's not an easy process;  it requires using a printer and scanning documents.  Asurion must have a lot of fraud because they're very weird about threatening prosecution if you lie to them.  Classy.
I am expecting to receive what I think will be a refurbished phone tomorrow between 8 and 5.  Guess I'll stay home.  I have my doubts as UPS has no tracking information, but I am hoping for the best.
I have since learned that this store I visited isn't actually a "Verizon Wireless direct" store - it's just a licensed dealer.  So in a nutshell they only care about selling new phones, not about helping existing Verizon customers.  If you're an existing customer looking for a replacement, you might as well be at a DMV with expensive lighting.  The only difference is that the DMV can actually help you.   I called Verizon Wireless, but I'm not their problem either - this is between me and Asurion.  The nice lady wished me luck, and I am going to need it.
The insurance isn't really that great a deal.  I bought this phone 14 months ago and paid $9.99 per month - $140.  And I paid a $199 deductible.  So for a refurbished phone I just paid $340.  I'll bet nobody lost money here other than me.
Bottom line here is that I and I alone broke my phone, and it's really not anybody's problem.  But I wish the real Verizon Wireless - the one I pay each month, not its supplier or vendor or whatever -- would step forward be more helpful in this situation.  Verizon Wireless has by FAR the best network in New York, but you've got to be willing to tolerate some run around if you are as rough on your phones as I am.  I'll be more careful now, I promise.
Oh, and I promise to throw style to the wind and buy one of those tacky otter boxes.  But I'll be sure to buy one at an Apple store.

I don't understand your complaint. It sounds like they treated you pretty decently at the Bryant Park store, but they could only do so much. They have the stores to sell devices and service plans. They are in business to maximize profits, so they outsource the insurance and repair businesses, having determined that they can't maximize profits in those businesses.
The insurance is not a good deal for the customer in most cases, otherwise the insurance company would go out of business. It's designed to maximize profits for the insurance company. My approach is to save the money I would spend on insurance premiums and deductibles for when I need to replace the phone. I might pay a bit more, but I'll get a brand new phone as fast as I can find one, and a lot less hassle than dealing with the insurance claim procedure and settling for a refurbished phone. (Because, you know, cooties.)

  • How do you keep film roll data when exporting?

I'm moving to a newer computer and wanted to transfer my large library to the new setup. I have film rolls organized with original photo dates, but when I import the library in the new iPhoto setup from a hard drive all the dates change to the day I originally imported them by scanning, not the dates of the photos themselves. How can I keep all the film roll data I worked hard on to organize the photos?

I hope that someone comes along soon to tell you a better way, but in the meantime, here is what I do when I need to reset the date.
Open an event and click on one of the photos.  Select the 'Photos' pull-down menu and choose 'Batch Change'.  This allows you to change the date for all of the photos in the event.
I decided it was too much work to do batch change dates when I moved my photos to iPhoto four years ago so I keep most of pre-DSLR photos in a Picture file outside of iPhoto.  Inconvenient at times, but I don't need to access older photos all that often.  When I do, I just pull a folder of photos into iPhoto and batch change the date then.
I am sure there must be an easier way; I just stumbled onto this accidentally.

  • Film Roll Questions

Hi - I have a few questions regarding film rolls.
    (1) Is there any way to have film rolls appear in the source pane, or is the only way to get a list of rolls by selecting View > Film Rolls?
    (2) How can I rename a film roll after import?
    (3) How can I re-date a film roll after import?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    Timu:
1 - the only place to view by film rolls is the main library as you've identified.
2 & 3 - Yes. Click on the file roll's icon and then go to the Info window at the bottom of the Source pane. You'll be able to edit the title field of the roll and the first date field. The other date fields represent the range of modified dates I believe and cannot be edited.

Why does Quicktime tell me it can't play certain videos created with my Phantom 2 v3 drone ? I fly the drone and switch back and forth from video to still pics and while I may have filmed four videos , sometimes Quicktime tells me that one of them can't be played . Checking the info shows that each of the unplayed videos was saved in the same mp4 format as the playable ones yet some of my most important videos won't play . It's getting very frustrating .

first; I use Perian, that helps even though it is no longer supported, (must have for avi files)
the apple-cores at apple have gotten very sloppy -- quicktime is a bit finicky and flakey.
example,   occasionally (when copy file from quad's card to hard drive)  the avi will show up as a 'mov' file and qt plays it no problem and no conversion.
but that is very occasionally,  most of the time qt won't convert the file,   -- iMovie won't open an avi without Perian installed  ,  I don't know how that effects qt.
qt 7"pro" is no good either, (qt 10 does everything it does and for NOT the extra $35)
I have gone to VLC  and MPlayerX  for direct playback for drones and cameras.

  • HT5149 Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found. Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard

Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps.
Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard drive at a Mac Authorized Repair.
Short history of repair and my Final Cut Pro installation:
    1. Macbook Pro stopped working, sendt it for repair. Had the Final Cut Pro installed,
    2. Desided to try a MiniMac and recovered my backup with Time Machine, got the Final Cut Pro working.
    3. Got my Macbook Pro back from repair, did backup on this one as well. But this time only the files not the Applications.
    4. Removed the files as mentioned in HT5149. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found.
    5. When I try to install Final Cut Pro from App Store, it downloads the application as planned. But after download it won´t show in the Application folder nor in the downloads folder, nor will it start an installation prosess. If I pause the installation in App Store, I can see the Final Cut Pro icon in my Dock. (But, as mentioned, after installation it won´t show neither here or in the Applications folder).
Any suggestions on what I should try now?
Thanks for any reply, I´m in deep water here...

Sounds like there is a file you're not getting.  Never do a removal manually.  It's so time consuming and a pain.  There's a very easy and fast way to do this, safely, properly.
Get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com), use this to remove FCP X.
    Reboot the Mac.
    Download from scratch.
If you're not seeing FCP X in your app folder, run Disk Utility to Repair all drives.
If that doesn't help, try running Disk Warrior from Altsoft to repair the directories on all drives.

Why does my camera roll say I am using 682 MB of storage but I only have 12 photos saved to it?

If it's really a couple dozen pictures, I would expect it should be under 100 MB.
You can try resetting your iPhone by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the used space is still so high.

This is not a message that Adobe is providing, and I recommend that you not click on the link. It sounds as though you might have malware on your computer.

  • Some film rolls are named "originals" - why?

I'm still a fairly new user of Macs as well as anything like iPhoto. For quite some time, I only imported my photos into iPhoto for fear of breaking something.
Well, I'm getting over that fear, and I have noticed that some of my film rolls have a name of "orignals", but some (which do have edited photos in them) don't have that name.
This might be due to some photos possibly being imported more than once (again, possibly from concerns to be certain I could back up my photos), but I'm not 100% certain of that. Is it possible to either get rid of these rolls (but not delete the photos), or to completely rebuild my iPhoto library, without loosing the edits, and metadata I've already configured?
    Mac mini 1.25/512   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Lew,
At one time you probably used the "add to library" and pointed to another iPhoto Library folder to import.
If you did that, then what you would get is:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
So, if you don't want the images that are in the Original rolls, as they are the originals of edited or rotated images, then just delete them. If you still want a copy of them for safe keeping then drag the images or the roll called Originals out of the iPhoto library window to your desktop, then delete the roll within iPhoto. You can burn the ones to disc on your desktop if you'd like.
    Or:
you can combine images from that roll to another roll with the edited images in them if you like.
To create a new film roll, command click each image or roll of images or combination of both, then go to File>create film roll.
This will create a new film roll containing all the images you selected.

  • Film ROLLS have vanished

I am using iphoto 6. Normally each set of new of pix I upload would sit in its own roll but a few days ago all the rolls spontaneously vanished except for one (roll 60) I don't think I have lost any photos (over 1000 of them) but they are all now sitting in "roll 60" in a complete jumble. I have of course tried going to: view> film rolls and also view>sort photos> by film rolls. but with no success ...Any ideas anyone??

I have the same problem with my device specially with the NFL App and after maybe 2hrs of research I found out that Verizon has implemented that messege/restriction to keep the app "TRUE" mobile only. What I'm saying is that you won't get the NFL App to play no matter what you do if connected to HDMI adapter or AirPlay. I hope this helps more than the other/previous post.
