Why every virtual terminal always starts at root-dir, not ~

when i log in on a normal terminal ( ctrl-alt-f1 ~ ctrl-alt-f6), i'm in my home directory
but when i'm on a virtual terminal like gnome-terminal, i'm always in root directory, no matter it's a loggin shell or not
even including Gvim

You need to describe in details what is you problem, how you start a terminal? You question dont make sense (where in the world is gvim a virtual terminal???)

If that doesn't work, try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Numerous online articles incidate the following command disables start-up chime sound but in Mavericks 10.9.1 it has no effect:

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Ipad Air update to IOS 8.02( stuck in apple logo; turns blue every few minutes and starts over; itunes does not recognize it)

Hi everybody,
i updated my IPAD bought in october 2013 to IOS 8.02.
Now the IPAD only goes to the apple logo, every few minutes it blinks blue and starts over. I tried doing the home plus switch thing and it doesnt work.
Itunes does not recognize the device either.
Do you have any solution to this issue?

Hello, I am relatively new to XML. I am trying to read an xml document to parse some information out of it. I basically have a large amount of data I want to load into my program. I could program it all in as static arrays, but I thought xml would be easier, and make changes easier.
I am trying to use JDOM, and have the project set up. My problem is when I read the document, it always gives a root element not set exception. Here is my xml file:

It reads the file successfully (as far as I can tell), but it's like the xml file is empty. I can't find anything on the web about this problem, and every tutorial says to do exactly what I've done, but never mention any possible problem. It can find the file, and I can write to an xml file as in other tutorials, but reading one in is a problem.
I chose JDOM because it seemed simplest for just reading in a large amount of data and parsing it out into variables. This is a very simple project, so I don't want to spend a lot of time writing xml parsing code, I'm only using xml because it will probably be easier than hard coding the data. Would a different xml api be easier to use for my purposes?

Subagent Configuration form affects only the SNMP subagent, which is a separate entity from
the collector process (snmpcoll). Currently, snmpcoll does not look
at the SNMP configuration data when it starts up. It is started by
the dispatcher and terminates when the dispatcher terminates. Many
of the statistics are supposed to reflect cumulative values recorded since MTA
initialization, such as the total number of messages sent and received.
As a convenience, the collector process collects information in the
background even while the SNMP subagent is turned off; this way,
the values are available when the SNMP subagent is configured and
turned on.

Collections fall off on the Date of First Deliquency 7-7.5 years later; that is supposed to be reported as the first time you went late (1-30 days) on the OC (original creditor) in the chain of events leading up to it's being farmed out for collection as I underestand it. DOFD though sometimes doesn't get reported right, and by default it will be the date the collection is added to the bureaus. As an example I have an awkward collection (not sure how I got it looking at the payment history thought I'd cancelled that account but TWC billing apparently didn't think so) which I went late on in 2009, but didn't get farmed out till late 2010. The DOFD is 6/09 looking at it, and it's expected to come off according to the bureaus 6/16 as a result. Different negatives have their own rules though.

Why do videos always start over from the beginning? A bug??

I just did the update and still have the same issue where videos always start from the beginning, when I WANT them to start where they left off. I went into Settings>Video>Start Playing and selected "Where Left Off", but that didn't help. Is this a bug?? I want it to act as it did on my 3G where I can exit the middle of a video and it will start from that point next time I enter the video... Any ideas???

I have the same problem, not only with videos but with my playlist as well. Everything seems to restart from the beginning.

Oops, Brian - I accidentally clicked the "this solved my question" button. No offense, but it didn't - not yet.
By "reset," mean it played for literally a few seconds, then dumped out of the movie and went back to the selection screen (in Netflix, this would be the screen with the movie description and Play button; in just the AppleTV interface, that would refer to the movie list with the chosen film highlighted, ready to hit SELECT to start it).
Sometimes, if I selected again (or hit Play), the movie would return where it left off (or within a few seconds to a few minutes of the scene). But other times, it would just jump back to the start of the movie, regardless of where I'd been when it dumped back to the menu.
Tonight, I tried something else, just to see if my wireless router is to blame: I patched a CAT-5 cable directly to the AppleTV from the router (same one that's doing the WiFi routing; it has four ethernet ports on the back). Netflix played flawlessly. HD all the way, no downressing to SD (or worse), no audio dropouts, no returns-to-menu. Since I don't have a long enough CAT-5 to reach the iMac, I have no easy way to test whether that would solve the iTunes Home Sharing issues I've been having. But just getting clean playback from Netflix tells me the wireless router is suspect here.
The hunt for answers continues.

[SOLVED?]Virtual terminal weirdness

After re-installing Arch I was rather surprised to find that I was unable to change virtual terminal while running X.
What I am meaning is that once X starts, I am unable to change virtual terminal with Ctrl + Alt F1 etc. I can go from VT-1 to VT-7 (which is running X) normally but once in VT-7, Ctrl + Alt F1 does not work.
I googled around and found a workaround - running the command "chvt 1" as root changes me to VT-1 just fine.
However, I would rather not have to run this command every time I want to change virtual terminal - Ctrl + Alt F1 much less fuss.
Does anyone know why this is happening and/or how to fix it?
I would be happy to post config files if needed - just tell me what you want

It appears that the issue may have been something to do with the open source ATI graphics drivers - I set up Catalyst and was able to shift virtual terminals with Ctrl + Alt + F1. Wierd.

I think so - I mean when I use other keyboard shortcuts (eg Ctrl+space to play or pause in Rhythmbox) it works fine. I'm using the UK generic 105 key PC layout according to GNOME's 'keyboard' menu so I'd think that would be pretty normal.

Applications start as root

I have been having trouble starting Adobe PS CS3 and thought it was just a possible Leopard issue with CS3. I have finally noticed in Activity Monitor that most of the applications I start, including FireFox, Safari, etc., start with as root. If I create a folder in my account using my drive's Finder window, the folder has a UID of root (drwxr-xr-x 2 root myimac 68 Nov 8 18:58 Test). The systems logs in with my User ID and displays my desktop and Documents folder, etc., but it seems confused when starting applications. I am assuming Finder is starting as root which is why it creates files as root. I even checked the UID and GID of files created before my updated to Leopard and match with what the Accounts advanced options show for my User and Group ID's. Has anyone else seen this issue and have a solution?

As another test, I created a new user. Again, the only running processes / applications that show up in Activity Monitor as the new user were Activity Monitor, bash, loginwindow, and mdworker. I started several other applications such as Safari, iPhoto, MS Word, & terminal and all these started as root. I opened my Documents folder and created a new folder, then used Word to create a document. Finder created the folder with uid=root and gid=staff. MS Word created a Microsoft User Data folder that also had uid=root and gid=staff. I saved a test document in the test folder I created and it was given root:staff as the uid:gid. I then used Finder (Macintosh HD) to copy and paste the file and this new file was created with newuid:staff. I was then able to delete the old file using Finder, but not from terminal (bash). I am assuming this is because bash is running as the user and not as root, but the permissions on the file and the folder are read only for staff and others. I can't even delete the file with the new users uid from terminal.
I am nearing the point of doing a total reinstall of the OS to see if that corrects the problems. I did have to rebuild the system once in 10.4 because of an issue that Safari seems to have had (may still have) where it would corrupt some system files and the system would sometimes get to where you couldn't log in (I saw other posts with similar issues). I took the system into the Apple store the first time that happened and all they could suggest was a reinstall. That fixed that problem for about two months until it happened again and I decided to try DiskWarrior to correct the issue. So I don't know if there may have been any residual issues lurking from the previous rebuild and DiskWarrior corrections

DVD always starts from the last point

No matter what change I make in the project, the DVD always starts at the last point I stoped! And I need it to start at the main Menu every time.
I've already read many of the topics with similar problem, and tried so many suggestions... none worked for me! Maybe I'm doing something wrong!
I'm using iDVD 7.0.4, Revolution theme.
The first top left auto-start box is empty. Then comes the Main Menu. From it comes 3 other boxes with chapters, all of them with Slide shows (built directly on iDVD) and a few 90 seconds movies (on iMovie, then Exported - not shared with iDVD)
I already tried to delete: com.apple.iDVD.plist and burn the DVD again. I've burned almost 10 already, with different settings!
Please, if anyone can help me, I would appreciate!

All you need do within apple's dvd player app is to select menu and it will remember that spot next time the dvd is inserted into your mac. Or at least it should. If not, then there's something else going on.
A third party set top dvd player (in most cases) will also take you directly to the first menu of the dvd. Unless you simply hit "stop" in which case you should be prompted to resume playback at the last point played. Or again, you can select Menu from the remote to bring the dvd to the root menu page. Your choice.

Unplanned automatic failover using Hyper-v Replica , why don't the VMs start up automatically on the replica server?

in order to test automatic failover to the replica server (Replica01) We unplugged the power cables from Host01 and Host 02
now the VMs on the replica server is still off , why don't the VMs start up automatically on the replica server?

overall there is no automatic failover in Hyper-V
Of course there is. It's enabled by Failover Clustering. This is a totally separate technology from Hyper-V Replica.
There is no automatic start up in Hyper-V Replica because it is not designed to detect a split-brain condition where the same virtual machine is running in multiple locations simultaneously. The replica site has no way to know why it can't reach the primary
system anymore. It might just be because someone unplugged a network cable. If the primary's virtual machines are still running and the replica decides to spin up its copies, you will have many troubles.
