Why Fon and Openzone

Why do hubs put out 2 signals, BTFon and BTOpenzone but both give a choice of logins? Perhaps there should be an BTtotalbroadband signal as well

BTFON is the chosen name for the BT WiFi community, this would rule out the need for a "BT Total Broadband" SSID, the reason that Openzone is also broadcast is because BT Openzone subscribers (not necessarly BT broadband customers) can use these hotspots as well as the standard commercial Openzone hotspots found in coffee shops and hotels etc. At one time the Hubs would only broadcast Openzone, however with the succesfull take up of BTFON and its rapid expansion, BT decided to add "BTFON" as an additional SSID so that users could recognise it as being a community hotspot.

HomeHub security concern - Fon and Openzone share ...

I have recently joined BT on Total Broadband Option 3 to find that my HomeHub has opened a BTFon and BTOpenzone connection. I'm quite content with this arrangement, but have found that they all share the same channel. Having done some research, the BTFon describes FON as secure because "BT FON members agree to securely share a portion of their Wi-Fi bandwidth through a separate channel on their wireless router".
I called BT about this but was told only how I could turn Fon and Openzone off - which I'd only want to do if they are compromising the security of my WPA encrypted connection by sharing the same channel. I don't know if I should be concerned by shared channel. Any advice would be welcomed.

First of all the youdo not share the same channel, they USE the same channel, much the same as I could be using the same channel as you.
Fon and OZ are a separate thing from your connection, except to say they do use some of your Bandwidth when actually being use by another party, but you should have priority.
As for security, I think its fair to say that it is secure as much as possible, I leave it running and so far no problems, now and again a couple of youngster sit on my garden wall and use it, but I do live in a quiet somewhat "respectable area", but had no problems with it.
Like most it can be cracked if someone is dedicated enough, but there must be easier picking out there, and WPA should protect you.

Fon and openzone on same hub

im just wondering if i should be seeing both openzone and fon on my home hub wireless conections when i look for wireless conections , am i right in thinking it should just be 1 or the other ?

OK. Irrespective of which phone you have - 'old' or a T2/Hero - was there a point in the set up with BT software (of the 620/710) or the configuring of wireless connectivity with the T2/Hero where you could have selected Openzone/Fon as your primary Wi-Fi network, and not your home hub (I assume your hub wireless key is also displaying as being 'available.'
(There is a known issue with the 620/710 using the BT software about trying to connect to your hub following a BTOZ/Fon connection other than in the home, but stick with the above first).
If during setup, you selected Openzone as your primary connection and not your hub (or have changed the wireless key of your hub/or have a new hub subsequently), this could account for it.
Without star gazing too much, the other option at this stage is to simply reset your hub, and then see what happens.
There are other possibilities as well I'm afraid. Its not a connectivity issue, more a functionality one I venture to think, interesting (but let me assure you, not without precedent).

Iphone 3gs and openzone and bt fon

i have just got a iphone 3gs with orange, they seem to think that i cannot log onto BT fon,
only BY openzone, true or not please. hving spoken to the orange help desk today they are sure that
openzone is ok but fon is not ok i thought from the forums that i could do both, help please

Im not an i phone user [HTC Desire], so I am making some assumptions about i phone functionality here.
First, your 'into Fon' is pretty quick, but it takes 24hrs ish for your hub to be updated - with a fair wind that it, and we have had some issues with Fon and hubs on here these last few weeks
Assuming you've joined Fon, and that your hub is Fon activated, having had a long time with this issue I would say;
Firstly, do not muck about with the BT Fon app. just yet. Simply see what wi fi connectivity is available from the device. You should see your own BT hub serial key code and BTOpenzone [or Fon - but probably the former] as well. Whether [at first] on your own hub or elsewhere, just hook your device up to Fon landing page, and sign in a BTBB customer [very important detail]. You sign in using your primary BT e mail username and password.
But there are dragons, some hubs are not giving out a Fon signature. Sign in is case sensitive, watch out for any auto capitalization etc.
It should be simple. Once you've got a Fon enabled hub and managed to sign in, then go to the BT Fon app., and once you installed in on your device ensure that you check the username and password that will come as soon as the download to your device is complete. Dont assume that because it is complete on your device it will be complete on the Fon app. You dont need the Fon app. to sign in though, it has to be said.
If you are a BTBB customer you can log into BTOZ and Fon, with the proviso's I've put above, and as doubtless some of the other 'Fon victims' may also add to this thread on the forum Orange have mis-informed you.

BTFON and Openzone-H Problems

Basically I work away from home and have temporary accommodation and I can pick up BTFON and an Openzone hotspot now I'm guessing these are from just 1 Home Hub as I can only pickup 1 x BTFON and 1 x Openzone-H. I have been on BTFON from this Hub before it works for say 1 hour approx sometimes longer sometimes less and it says im still connected to BTFON but no webpage is loading up its happened a few times and I'm getting really frustrated with it because it can last for hours and hours ive been waiting atleast 12 hours to see a webpage load up but still nothing. I have tried everything rebooting my macbook resetting my browser switching between BTFON and Openzone-H, I have even tried using my iPhone with the BTFON app and still no joy.
I can only think this is a Hub/BTFON error? Anyone else having these problems or does anyone have a solution?
Oh and I have tried it on my own BT HH3 and it still happens.

I am in a similar position to the initial poster except there are 3 hot spots surrounding my location. I was using BT FON for a couple of weeks - not great but much better than the Orange broadband that this house has - when it went offline in the middle of a business transaction. I did all the usual things - switched to BT Openzone, switched the comp off and on again, ran diagnostics - all to no avail. That was 5 days ago. There is still no service available. When I rang BT a nice lady smilingly told me the FON service was at the beck and call of those with a BT hub (3 nearby) and whether the hubs are operating correctly and there was nothing they could do until their customers reported the fault or turned their hubs on again. The chances of 3 different people turning their hubs off for at least 5 days, or those hubs developing a fault, are lusdicrously small, wouldn't you say?
I found a FON customer service email address in a blog and sent a mail outlining the problem. I received a reply within two days from a chap calling himself Arnoldo. The time given was CEST (Central Europe) and he was most sympathetic and gave a lot of solutions ( most of which I had already tried) and also a free two day pass for the FON service. I replied, stating that two free days was wonderful if there was a service to log into, but there wasn't. I received a reply from Arnoldo which was an exact duplicate of the first. I now have 4 free days for a service that I cannot log onto.
My conclusion is that BT couldn't give a toss about the FON service or the people that use it as it is such a small source of revenue for them. I also believe they should be prosecuted for falsely advertising the service; giving the impression that it is both reliable and easy to obtain. I think a far more realstic slogan would be: BT FON - Frustratingly Intermitent at best. If the FON service you were using has disappeared, don't hold your breath. You would be better off taking a two week vacation and it may, just may, be working again when you get back. Just don't rely on it.

I dont have broadband, i have a ps3 and cannot get a good enough signal from BTFON in order to connect,
can you imagine what its like for me?.... knowing that if i had 20% more of a signal i could get online with my ps3 and other devices...
i thought BTFON would be my saviour and stop me from having to get a landline but unless BT make some sort of Antenna or Receiver for BTFON im stuck.
i HAVE seen the fonera and fontenna but they are pointless for the user of the BTFON access point (the paying guests like myself).
I guarantee their is loads of people stuck the way that i am, MAKE IT HAPPEN!

The Openzone /FON service is not designed for devices like the xbox It's really only for email and web browsing as its maximum download speed of 512k and is time limited to two hours connection at a time unless you keep reconnecting

Infinity and Openzone

It may be a stupid question, but it's not clear from the BT website....
Does an Infinity contract include Openzone login minutes, or only FON?

Unfortunately it doesn't....
The Infinity site says, under Optioin 2:
Unlimited Wi-Fi minutes included
Get online when you are out and about with unlimited Wi-fi minutes. Access the internet at over a million Wi-fi hotspots.
BUT doesn't make it clear whether this is FON and/or Openzone.
Under Broadband Option 3 I had unlimited FON, but only 250 minutes Openzone.
BB Option 3 currently says:
. BT Total Broadband Customers Only. Unlimited Wi-Fi minutes for Internet access available in range of BT FON Wi-Fi Community members' BT Home Hubs (coverage dependent on number in active use) and BT Openzone Hotspots or FON access points outside of the UK. Wireless enabled equipment required. Conditions and Fair Usage Policy apply – see www.bt.com/btfon for details.
There is no such statement on the Infinity site...

Because you can only synce with one iTunes library and you are switching libries by using the new computer. To nake this yyour syncing computer:
- Move all the media(apps, music, synced video and photos etc) to the new computer.
- Connect the iPofd yo the computer and bake a backup fo the iPod by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes doe not include media.

Looks like someone changed setting in iOS8.
Change this setting.
Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Grayscale or Invert Colors

Delete the incomplete tracks from your library, sending them to recycle bin, then download them again from your purchased history. If the problem persists use the "report a problem" links from your account history to contact the iTunes store support staff.
Are the incomplete tracks ones that you had previewed before purchasing the album? If so there may be a bug that needs reporting. See this recent post which explains why I ask the question...

Any ideas why? and how to get my tracks back?
I never opened soundtrack pro to edit the track just Garage band....the track just mysteriously saved as half the track.
I am running Lion and I upgraded my Garage band to '11 hoping it would resolve the issue...it didn't. Now I can't find that tracks at all.
The 2 songs having the issue are titled Exotic Yearning and Reunion.
I am in the process of reinstalling the audio content from my discs. I just don't want to run into this again.
Any thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated!

After spending some time reinstalling the soundtrack pro 3 content I opened the full track called Reunion.
It showed back up in Garage Band.*It was the full track and wasn't chopped off until I dragged it onto the project. Then it showed up chopped.
Then I closed Garaged band and opened soundtrack pro 3....The song was again chopped off at the 1:33min mark

I used the (Apple branded) VGA adapter lots of times last year. Now I got back to one place I used it many times and it does not work. When I restart iPad with the adapter connected, I get the "accessory is not supported"message. But that same accessory WAS supported before.
This is very annoying as I planned a whole bunch of presentations starting this week to do with my iPad2 and that adapter.

I received the same error message, "Accessory Not Supported" from both the VGA and DV video adapters I purchased, both were boxed direct from Apple. However, to bypass this problem I simply clicked on Photos icon on iPad2 and flipped through photos until it displayed on my projector. I then exited the Photos app and my home screen displayed fine on the projection screen.
Some logic issue with the video adapters, but launching Apple Photo app initializes the video adapters then they work fine for mirroring after that.

I don't recognise the symptoms as such, but here are a couple of things to try.
Check all tracks
Unchecked tracks are skipped during normal track to track playback. Go to the Songs view and CTRL-click on an empty checkbox, or CTRL-click on a filled one twice. This will ensure all tracks are checked.
Repair permissions
To make sure that your iTunes folder (or media folder if located separately) has the correct permissions, right-click on the folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but later versions of Windows shouldn't be too different.
You can also clear the Read-Only flag for the entire library from the Properties dialog.
