Why go to iDVD 9

I am currently running iDVD 8 and, except for the fact that it occasionally fuddles up my 4:3 projects and makes them 16:9, it seems to work well. So, why upgrade to iDVD 9? Are there any performance enhancements? Does it still have the 4:3/16:9 misfit problem?

There is no iDVD 09. You will find an iDVD application in iLife 09, but it is the same version as in iLife 08. Check out these threads: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8894161&#8894161

Most users buy iDVD (part of iLife 11 ON DISK).
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Why can't iDVD handle m2v files?

It makes no sense to me that iDVD can't support m2v files. Why doesn't iDVD just pass m2v files through and handle the same-named audio ac3 file?
Is there any reasonable explaination for this?

Not my intention to beat anyone up, just looking for your opinions.
Thanks for the Titanium suggestion. My only difficulty there is that I will need my content organized into a single main menu with 4 or 5 sub-menus. I'm looking at Toast 7 now, but it appears that it only offers a single menu or set of menus at a single level.
In other words, I don't think you can make a menu a destination for another menu button. It seems you can only create menu buttons that link to videos.
Again, I apologize for my attitude, but it's especially frustrating that iDVD has one half of what I need, DVD Studio Pro has the other half, and Apple is way ahead of everyone else with DVD production software.
If I can find a way to systematically add movies and generate a menu structure to those movies, I can build quite an impressive customized DVD training system. Users are tested and receive training DVDs containing training videos covering the specific areas where they need help. Cool, eh?
So c'mon Apple! I'd rather see them conquer this potentially large market first.

  • Why won't iDVD create chapters?

    Why won't iDVD create chapters?
I'm using iMovie "09" and iDVD.
I created an iMovie project with chapter markers. When I try to create a DVD project, selecting a Theme with chapters, the chapters do no appear...only the full movie.
    Don

And I figure about - if there is a setting somewhere for minutes per Chapter as in Roxio Toast ?
Go into the Map mode, select the movie there
and select the Advanced ➙ Create Chapter Markers for Movie menu option
Then you can set the Chapter length in 1 minute increments:

  • Why is the "iDVD" gray in the Share menu?

I want to burn a movie to DVD. In the Share menu, the iDVD is gray and cannot be selected. This is not true for other projects. How do I find out why and how do I fix it?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Love & Peace, Grace

    Hi
Do not use "Share to iDVD" - BUT
    "Share to Media Browser"
In iDVD import from Media Browser here.
The resulting DVD will be so much better.

  • Why won't iDVD burn my .avi files... it used to?

i have files ending in .avi that i want to burn to a DVD, in order to watch them on television.
i throw them into the iDVD and the preview shows nothing but a blank screen.
iDVD used to burn my .avi files.
i have converted them to .mp4 / .mpg / .mov... but nothing seems to work.
sometimes, throwing a .mp4 file into iDVD nothing happens at all, or it will say unsupported / unrecognized file.
the only time it did work was when i used a program to convert a file to .mp4, but now it has a huge watermark across the picture.
why all of a sudden does it not work?

    Hi
If QuickTime-player opens Your .avi files then start Inspector (cmd+I) and read
    Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnnnnn
    What does it read ?
What did an old .avi file that worked - read ?

  • Why doesn't iDVD burn changes made within iMovie?

I have iMovie 6.0.3 and iDVD 6.0.3 and have made several movies and DVDs over the past few years. But now have hit something very frustrating....
    1) I've just completed a movie in iMovie. Took it to iDVD, created menus etc. then burned it to a DVD-RW. Noticed a couple of changes I wanted to make, namely a soundtrack volume adjustment, and a subtitle change (within iMovie). Made the changes in iMovie.
    2) When I opened iDVD again, it said it noticed some changes in the iMovie project and would I accept them. Answered yes. When I reviewed these changes in iDVD preview, all was well. It showed the new subtitle.
    3) Did another burn (3-4 hour process, mostly encoding) to disk image. Lo and behold, this new movie still showed the OLD subtitle!!
    4) Deleted this disk image file. Checked the iDVD preview again, and it showed the corrected subtitle. Created a NEW disk image (for the THIRD time!) and four hours later discover that the OLD subtitle is still there!!!
What the heck is going on?? iMovie file was modified, resulting iDVD project file reflected the change, but the "burn" result does NOT reflect the change!!!! Why is iDVD Burn sill picking up the old version of my movie?____
    Thanks-

You're right. Only selecting Advanced>Delete Encoded Assets did the trick. Otherwise, even though iDVD recognizes that the iMovie file had changed, it doesn't necessarily "pick up" all the changes ....unless you Delete Encoded Assets.
I don't know which changes iDVD does or doesn't pick up, but in future I will always Delete Assets to be sure. Saves lots of time in the long run.
    THANKS for your help!!
P.S. I did not have background encoding enabled. Never do.

  • Why won't iDVD 08 preview controls allow fast forward?

It says in the manual that clicking the "right arrow" button on the on-screen control panel will fast-forward the movie, but it doesn't. Can anyone tell me why this is?
And why doesn't the iDVD preview have the same preview slider as QuickTime does?

This is simply a suggestion .... if you are in need of "scrubbing the timeline" do this in the video editing app (ie, iMovie or FCP) and not iDVD.
The main reason we don't normally scrub the entire video w/in iDVD itself is because this is not where video editing is done (as opposed to authoring the entire DVD).
iMovie and iDVD are like a candy bar. The chocolate bar would be iMovie and iDVD would be the candy wrapper (the outside packaging only). Hope this analogy makes sense.
A couple of things you can do to quickly preview your iDVD prior to burning to media if Preview / FF isn't working correctly in iDVD..... The first would be to jump to different scenes using scene selections w/in iDVD or perhaps make a disc image first of the dvd to the desktop and then use apple's dvd player to fast forward, reverse, etc.

  • Why is the iDVD-burned CD of worse quality than the raw quicktime movie?

    Hello,
I have digitzed some old VHS movie to quicktime using a simple USB video grabber. The quicktime movie that I got is of good quality. Then I have imported to iMovie, made the editing, finalized the movie, and shared to iDVD. The encoding is set to best performance, the format is PAL, 4:3, and then I have burned the DVD. When I look at the DVD on our TV the dark parts are really awful - digitizing noise all over the place.
I then connected the computer directly to the TV and this is much better in quality . the background has no or little flicker, and the dark parts remain dark.
What am I doing wrong? I refuse to beleive that this is as good as it gets - commercial DVDs are much better and this is from a €%&/# VHS, so there should not be any real degradation?!?

When I inspected on a huge flatscreen it turns out that
-all the iDVD movies have TERRIBLE pixellation
Clearly when you look at a 720 x 576 DVD on a 42" LCD it will not look good unless you have good source footage AND a good encoder AND good upscaling from your player. iDVD does provide a good encoder but the other two may just not be up to the task.
I personally made DVDs that looked good on a 42" Sony TV. But they were encoded in Compressor and played on a Blu-Ray player with excellent upscaling.

How can I burn the mpeg-4 to a DVD without incurring the loss in quality? How do studios do this?
You can't and they don't. First of, studios don't start out with highly compressed videos and secondly they have much better software encoders (which cost $$$$) like CinemaCraft or hardware encoders.
    anderssunesson wrote:
There were some tips on round pixels vs square pixels. I will look into that. Do you need a special "DVD-digitizer" to save your old VHS movies??
You can get something that goes from VHS to DV (instead of MPEG-4) like the Canopus converters and then edit in either iMovie 6 or FCE (both are EOL). In any case, bear in mind that you start out from VHS.

  • Why can't iDVD find the themes?

I just upgraded my imac to OS 10.4.9 and loaded my new copy of iLife 6 (bought just before iLife 8 was released). When I open iDVD, and choose any of the project options, iDVD begins to look for the themes and looks and looks and looks and looks. I can find them manually but I don't know how to tell them where they are--they are just where the read me says they'll be. How can I create that link so I can get past the search for the themes and use the software?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to discussions!
The first thing I would do is delete the iDVD preference files:
    Quit iDVD.
Locate a file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and get rid of it. iDVD will create a new one the next time it runs. Then empty the trash.
The files can be found here:
    Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iDVD.plist
Then, run a permissions repair using the disk utility.
You should do that anytime you update or add new software.

  • Why are the iDVD menus grayed out?

I downloaded a movie from iTunes, downloaded fine. Opens and plays in Quicktime, no problem. The format is mp4 and m4v (tried both). But when I put it into iDVD to put on a DVD disk, cannot do. Using the magic iDVD choice, I can set it up, drag the movie in, preview. But I get a message I need to access "Project info" and change the settings. However, that menu item (and almost all the other menu items) are grayed out, so can't do it.
So what is the problem? I tried both formats in iDVD and neither will work. Is it the wrong format?

Yes, I tried it again by seeing the song in the main library as opposed to seeing it in a playlist. Again, the lyrics tab was grayed out. I was able to see the tab, however, when I did a "get info" for one of her music videos I have.

  • WHY have my iDVDs stopped playing correctly?

I would appreciate any help very much.
I have used the same Mac, media, and DVD player for at least a year. When I make a DVD, I check it on a PS3 and a DVD player seperately to ensure they work. I'm a wedding photographer, and provide simple video slideshows on a DVD to my clients.
I burn a DVD from iDVD exactly as I have done countless times, and when its put in the DVD player it "squishes" the image on the menu and video and doubles text over itself in the menu, and there is a green line running down the right side of the screen. Plays fine on the DVD player.
    -NTSC
    -Professional Quality burn
-Slidshow is created in iPhoto from a book and exporting directly >iPhoto>Share>Export to iDVD
-Have all software updates in place
    -Have restarted program and computer
-Have changed aspect ratio from wide to normal with no effect.
    -Media is the same
PLEASE help I'm so frustrated! Thanks!

    Hi
    DVD-burners get's old
If You burn more than three DVDs in a row without pause to let DVD-Laser cool down - they grow older faster or even over-feat and die. My get's 20-30 minutes to cool down.
Free space on Start-Up hard disk - use to give problems - I never go under 25Gb free space when doing SD-Video and 4-5 times more if HD-material is used
Material feed into iDVD - there are more and more codecs coming and iDVD is picky. Some it can back-engineer to a working form - others not. A while ago this was no problem but as Cameras evolves this gives more and more problems. I convert all my material into a few working codecs/file formats as
    • Video - AIC or streamingDV
    • Photos - only as .jpg (Never .bmp)
    • Audio - only .aiff (Never .mp3, .wma etc)
Forced or Panic Halts - introduces small errors (most often into the application pref. file) and builds up a coming disaster. Trashing this from time to time prevent's this and make application run better.
    Just my spontaneous thoughts.

  • Why do my iDVD themes have no "Play Movie" button?

Having just paid my local Apple store to install iLife 09 for me, as my machine refused to do it, all seemed fine. After two days, now iDVD opens, but all themes show no "play movie" or "select scenes" buttons. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Perhaps I am just missing something obvious. Thanks

but all themes show no "play movie" or "select scenes" buttons
You have to actually drag and drop content on a menu before you see anything.

  • Why won't iDVD recognise my iMovie HD 6 project?

I use the share>iDVD, and iDVD opens, but in Media it says "This iMovie project can't be used...." The solution offered is to "save to Media Browser" this is not an option in HD 6. If I try and import to iMovie '08, nothing is actually imported. What can I do? I have completed two projects and I want to burn them on 1 disc with menu options?

Instead of sharing, create an iDVD project and try dragging your iMovie project icon (the one with the star on it) into the edge of your iDVD project main menu window. It should import right into iDVD.
However, your iMovie and iDVD appear not to be working correctly. You should be able to share to iDVD if you are doing it correctly. Try closing them both down and trashing the files com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iDVD.plist found in User/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac. Now see if iMovie will properly share to iDVD.
