Why has maverick made my iMac so slow
Does anyone know why the Mav update has slowed my machine to work like windows!!!
Its a 2011 21" Imac is there anything we can do or our apple working on this?
You will need to provide more information to see if anyone can help you.
For example, fill in your profile, define "slow," give more specifics.
Incidentally, as far as I know, Apple is not "working on this." OS X 10.9 runs just fine here and on most Apple computers.

Why has adobe made Illustrator so clunky, difficult and unfriendly to use?
Why has Adobe destroyed the workability of Illustrator? I've been working with Illustrator, professionally, since 1988 (and almost as long with Photoshop) and this 'Creative Cloud' incarnation is just a f******g DISASTER!!!! Do they deliberately set out to make it as difficult to use as possible? It's bad enough that you have to sign up to this 'Creative Cloud' nonsense, but do the idiots that design the software ever try to actually work with it?!!! Have they got a clue about workflow?!!!!!
There is ZERO customer service, and no way of giving feedback. The arrogance of Adobe is just astounding - almost as astounding as the breath-taking stupidity of the people who write the damned software. I just wish they'd stopped at Illustrator 10 - at least that was sensible and workable.
If someone can actually - I mean REALLY - contact Adobe, you can tell them from me that their software and company policies stink - as does their arrogant indifference to paying customers evidenced by the complete absence of customer support. Also, you can tell them that their software writers are ignorant, incompetent fools.The poetic version would be that Adobe don't have a "vision" and simply are limping from version to version as long as they can make a buck with plugging on a handful of features every time. Specific to AI it's pretty clear that the software would have needed to be "reinvented" from the ground up 15 years ago. Similarly, the people responsible for its development now seem to prefer to waste their time with things like the barely workable new curve tool or those ridiculous MAX demos instead of tackling more fundamental issues like the atrocious and unreliable file format, import/ export handling, parametric editing and generative, reusable graphics, genuine 3D tools and whatnot.... Alas, things are as they are and thankfully there are other programs out there aplenty.

did the update to Maverick from OSX ML and boy has it slowed down my whole computer big time, what a mistake to have done this..... the whole computer has dramattically slowed, I thought Apple advertised be faster and slicker and better use of resources and I got 16gb Ram and 500gb HDD and 3.6 ghz processor, OSX Lion was snappier than this what a big mistake since this was installed.
Thanks god I did a disk image of the machine before I did it Ill go back and stay with OSX ML until Apple sorts problems I see many issues has risen and also Mail is playing up big time so who screwed that up?
whittyCheck your Activity Monitor to identify what might be slowing your system. Mavericks is as fast, if not faster, as Mountain Lion for me and I'm using a 2009 MacMini with 8 Gigs of RAM.

Why does Yosemite make my iMac run slower?
Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite, my iMac is running somewhat slower and trudging a bit. Is this anything to do with the new OS and if so, is there any "solution"?

1. get your backup(s) made first. Be sure the drives are properly formatted to receive Time Machine.

This second link above has something overlooked but is a good way to get at least your data secured
You can create a burn folder that contains all your important files. Whenever you want to back up the latest versions of those files to a CD or DVD, simply open that burn folder, then click Burn. For more information, see Create and use a burn folder.
2. once you back up you can concentrate on getting your iMac up and running according to Uncle or Aunt Apple standards by doing some things that Kappy suggested (see my first post).
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally.
Safe Mood boot is a good way to isolate some problems. It may be something quite simple such as a 3rd party app in your login items under Users & Groups in System Preferences. -
Mavericks-made my computer so slow I cant use it!!
Question, my mac is virtually useless since Apple did an update to Mavericks, their operating system. It takes me 5 minutes to type a sentence because i get the spinny wheel.I can't open programs only one at a time or it is super super slow. Even when i do open a program it takes forever to do anything. I keep getting the spinny whel. For instance, it has taken me 15 minutes to type this because the words to not come right away, the spinny wheel for about 30 seconds and then they all come at once. I brought itinto the mac store and they said you have 2 slots of memory each containing 2 gb a total of 4 which was fine until they updated their OS. They told my computer is fine but I need more memory now. I do not see how this is my issue and why I have to buy more memory. Shouldn't apple take care of this issue so many people are having a problem with!!!???!!! Anyways, I can barely use my computer or type anything because it takes to long. Apple does not sell or put in memory for you. They told me to go to crucial.com and buy two 4GB to put in the slots. That would be $92.00 for both. i dont think that is too bad but was wondering if anyone has found a solution. Why is my brand new iMac so slow?
Hi,
I bought my iMac about four months ago. Never had a Mac before and I'd been looking foreward to it
for a long time!
Specs: iMac 27" | OS X 10.6.8 | quad core | 2.7GHz | 4 gig ram | 1 TB disk | 1333 MHz | DDR3
Very early it striked me how slow this machine was! Starting and rebooting is insanely quick, but
that's about it! I work in Photoshop, and it is just horrible. It crashes all the time! I am used to work
with several layers, I can't do that here. Because it's sooo slow...
I also work in a 3D program called ArchiCad and this is even worse! I've had to teach myself a
slower workflow to prevent it from crashing. I hate it...
If both Photoshop and ArchiCad is open at the same time, the Mac crashes VERY fast. I have to force quit app's
and reboot the Mac often. Sometimes several times in one day.
I see this little circus wheel all the time and it's driving me nuts!
Sometimes the Mac just crashes without having lots of apps open. I might have a couple of browsers open,
a word document, finder and a priview. And it crashes!
And I have to do the eternal job of force quitting and trying to tell the Mac to reboot. This often takes a while.
The Mac is full of small problems also.
- I have to install the magic mouse all the time! It just gets lost and I have to use my track pad
to search for it. Even though the batteries are new. Sometimes this only happends once every
second week, sometimes it happens 15 times a' day.
- Sometimes I can flip between pages in web browsers by swiping with the mouse, sometimes I can't.
Sometimes I can do this when working with folders, sometimes I can't.
- I often have problems with Java.
- The web browser Opera crashes all the time. Can't use it.
- Sometimes, videos from f.eks youtube can't play.
- Just opening a photo in preview can take 10 seconds! Not allways, but sometimes.
- Using cover flow with images is useless. It uses so much time to preview the photos with good quality.
You might wonder, what have this dude done to his Mac?
I have installed Photoshop, ArchiCad, Chrome, Opera and a small app for browsing an old iPod touch.
That's it!
Since I'm a photographer I've also put a lot of photos here, but not more than perfaps 100GB. Max!
I am very, very carefull with what kind of websites I visit. I never visit a website I don't trust.
I don't download anything (movies, games etc). Everything I have is original. No pirate.
So I brought it wth me to my local apple store. They thought it was a problem with the disc.
After being without the Mac for a week they told me nothing was wrong with it. It was perfect they said!
My jaw dropped all the way to the floor.
All they could say was that I could format and reinstall the intire system and/or upgrade to 8BG ram.
Do you guys think this will help? Why should I reinstall? I can't understand how I could've screeved the system up!
And really? I should use MORE money and upgrade to 8gb Ram? My previous 2gb Ram PC was so much faster! Is this necessary?

I feel lost. This is by far the worst purchase I've ever done. I hate my Mac...Well,
To start Dan, you are using quite a few CPU, GPU, RAM and HD intensive apps.
4 GBs of RAM isn,t going to cut it. 8 GBs isn't going to cut it! Not at all! 4 GBs Of RAM is the base (read minimal ) RAM the iMac model you bought comes with. It doesn't mean it's enough to run lots of Applications. Epecially processor intense applications you're trying to run!
Every re-iteration of OS X uses more and more CPU, GPU, RAM and HD resources.
OS X, BY ITSELF, needs between 2-4 GBs of RAM just to do its things smoothly.
Using Photoshop alone needs oodles of CPU, GPU, RAM and HD space for scratch disks.
If you are a seasoned Photoshop/Adobe user, you should already know this fact!
ArchiCad is another, CPU, GPU and RAM heavy app.
You have various browsers, email, word documents open simultaneously? Really?
More than one web browser open? Web Browsers also eat up lots CPU and GPU cycles and RAM!
The thing that eats up CPU, GPU and RAM cycles with web browsers is Adobe Flash and to some extent Java.
You're trying to run all these thing on very little to no RAM horsepower!!!
You're asking your iMac to run all these heavy processing apps with no additonal RAM available to do so.
As you've discovered, this is not working.
You're probably getting a lot of page in/outs and virtual memory swapping between real RAM and the hard drive.
You need to install, AT THE VERY LEAST, 12 GBs of RAM! I would just install 16 GBs of RAM and be done.
Your iMac can take up to 32 GBs of RAM, but this, I think maybe overkill. Try your system with 16 GBs first.
I have a 2009 27 inch iMac with 16 GBs of RAM running CAD and Adobe CS 3 and Blender 3D and other processor intensive apps with very little issues.
Buy reliable RAM from online sellers Crucial memory or OWC.
As wise advice from me, if you want to experience a smooth and productive Mac experience, do not upgrade your iMac to 10.7 or 10.8.
10.6.8 Snow Leopard is the last "real" version of the previous Mac OS X versions that many of us still love and use. Newer versions of the OS, basically, still have many issues and turn your iMac into a giant iPod, iPHone or iPad., Instead of being a fully customizable and reliable OS.
The magic mouse is really a crppy mouse to use with drawing and painting applications like we both use.
Ditch it and purchase either the old RF style Mac compatible wireless laser mice or purchase a wired mouse.
These mice are more accurate pointing and tracking devices.
Look at Mac compatible mice models from Microsoft, Logitech, Kensington or Apple
The battery life of the magic mouse is just poor, also. Its tracking is poor for fine mouse movements, too!
Does your wireless trackpad work any better? Is it better on baterries? Do you get fine control using it?
If the trackpad is better, than just ditch the magic mouse all together.
If the trackpad give you trouble, too, ditch it for a more accurate mouse, trackball or trackpad from another manufacturer other than Apple. Again, Mac compatible trackpads from Microsoft, Logitech and Kensington. -

I always have this message "preparing for video playback" and it also cannot handle 3 transitions stack together on top of each other (it gets stuck with a message asking me to cancel RT Unlimited but my 24" iMac was always on "RT Unlimited" & I don't have this problem before.
The only difference is that in the old 24" iMac I was using a 500GB Lacie FW800 ext HDD but with the 27" iMac I paired it with a cheaper 1TB Western Digital FW800 ext HDD.
Is this the cause of the problem ?

May be you can do the test, using your internal disk drive to see if the problem remove. And in this case you can blame your external disk. -
Why has my macbook pro suddenly got slower?
My macbook pro has been working perfectly fine until this morning. When i turned it on it was much slower than usual, so i force quit all applications and restarted it. It had no effect so i tried it again but it is still very slow! Can anyone give any tips as to why this might happen/how to resolve the issue?
Thanks.First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
Why has my wireless internet suddenly become slow?
Over the past few weeks or so my wireless internet has become really slow, and i don't know why. I have a Linksys WRT54G. Im pretty sure its the router because i connect my laptop to my modem and the internet works better. Do i need an upgrade or something?
YES... try the upgrading the rtr first..or check your isp..they might be getting slow themselves..

Yosemite made my iMac so slow. I Need help;-)
I have a iMac 2.5 chez , 314 GB free memory, 20 GB ram and the poor thing is failing me :-( It is a lot worse since i have installed Yosemite to the stage where it takes ages to load an application, it freezes and i get the spinning wheel. I have to walk away and come back sometimes hours later and it is still spinning. I am not a Tec with Mac, i can use them but all the stuff which goes on inside i need spelling out for me. Please someone help me !
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Why has my Mac mini become so slow?
I realise this sounds like the oldest newbie question in the book, and could be down to any of a hundred things, but I'll try and explain as clearly as possible. (I've been using Windows for 15+ years, Macs for the last 2+, and I always associated Windows with this kind of gradually increasing lethargy.)
In a word, it comes down to lag. Every operation which used to be instant when the Mac was new, now has a delay of anything from half a second to over 10 seconds. It feels like walking in mud. And it's always the first time I do something I haven't done for a few minutes -- if I repeat the same operation immediately afterwards, it's instant. Long delays are often (but not always) accompanied by the beachball -- which I see *a lot*.
What sort of operations? Well, dropping down a menu, for example. Or changing volume. (Using the keyboard or Apple remote.) Or switching between open apps. It's not unusual for me to wait over 10 seconds for the computer to respond, for something as simple as a volume change. If I repeat it, it's instant. But if I wait a few minutes, or switch to a different app, the lag's there again.
The mini is 2 years old. It's a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB RAM, with wireless keyboard and mouse. About 2 months ago, I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, using the Archive & Erase method. It's permanently connected to an external 1TB firewire drive. I have MenuMeters installed, which rarely shows over 10% usage per CPU, including during the slowdowns. (If I'm ripping a DVD with Handbrake, it goes to 100%, so I'm not surprised if it's slightly unresponsive then.) In trying to speed things up, I've set MenuMeters to only display CPU, updating every 3 seconds, but it hasn't made a difference. I don't have a lot else installed on the mini -- it's mainly a media player. During a typical day it runs Firefox, Quicktime with Perian, DVD Player, Front Row, and iTunes. (iTunes is so sluggish I avoid using it when I can.) The only memory resident apps are Vine Server and Audioscrobbler.
Does this sound familiar? Any suggestions? I'll supply a System Profile file if that'll help.
francoisUnlike most Windows PCs, Macs have always seemed to be a little fussy about RAM, so in the broadest sense, the answer to your question whether you can use any brand of RAM (compatible specs of course), is that no, you can't. Nor is it always possible to say what brands are suitable and which are not. Better, really, to buy RAM for Macs from suppliers who have a history of Mac support (thus are aware of compatibility issues) and who offer a lifetime, no quibble, warranty, such that if the RAM doesn't work, or fails in service later, it can be swapped out without any hassle or additional cost. Crucial.com (the link I provided previously) is one such.
As far as fitting it, it is always better to have an approved service provider do it in that if there are any problems, they can be held accountable, and if there is any warranty cover, they will not risk voiding it. Each will charge a different amount for this kind of work however, so it's worth shopping around for prices for upgrading RAM - including the cost of the service provider also providing the RAM, since some can source compatible modules at wholesale. -

Why has Mavericks' speed lagged into uselessness?

I've reinstalled Mavericks via recovery mode.
I've bought and run DiskWarrior on all counts.
I've run Hardware Test, both short and long versions.
Run Disk Utility.
All tests done from a separate boot drive or Recovery Mode.
Upgraded memory from 2G to 6G.
Log in to user account takes more than 5 minutes.
Apps take 3-5 min to launch
Switching from one window to another takes 15+ seconds.
Some apps repeatedly crash such as Mail and iTunes. When Mail says I need to rebuild mailboxes and I say go ahead, it will not
Use some third party apps but not many utilities-no clean up utilities

I'm on the verge of erasing iMac and reinstalling Lion. I'd appreciate any advice. I've searched and searched this topic here. Many suggestions don't apply since I don't use the 3rd party apps mentioned in a lot of the problems. Tried all the other solutions like zapping PRAM and stuff. A lot of folks seem to be having this problem, but no one seems to be getting satisfaction despite the generous and varied solutions offered. Didn't have this problem before I upgraded. Thanks for your ideas. The First of your tasks I did seemed actually to make it worse. After rebooting normally, any window 'built' itself in layers, sort of what you see in Safe Mode or a kernal panic. When I tried to open Safari to get to this forum the whole computer 'hung' for about 2 minutes then shut off and restarted itself. Never done that before. The second time Safari took over three minutes to launch.
So now, finally I was able to run EtreCheck, as you see: FYI, I keep iTunes library on external hard drive- have done for a long time, never had a problem before Mavericks. Also, Time Machine is housed on a separate external hard drive from iTunes ( I have 4 external hard drives for separate uses, another of which is a Boot Drive.

Why is Maverick's startup time so SLOW!!!
Start up time went from 10 seconds to 32 seconds...
I quit Drop Box, wifi & got rid of all programs out of the tray, leaving only the finder & it did not improve the time...
How does one improve the start up time????The new Maverich update for GMail and iBook obviously fixed other issues...
The original Maverick caused my startup time to go from 10 seconds to 32 seconds...
This revised Maverick startup time is now 18 seconds...
I greatly appreciate the improvement...
