Why has my iMac Internet Connect disappeared?

After several years of regular internet and e-mail activity, a recent attempt to connect resulted in a dialog box saying: 'Internet Connect - The selected communication device does not exist. Please verify your settings and try again'. I never touch my settings!
My situation is not helped by being a long way from the telephone exchange - consequently I can only receive a very slow bps and frequent disconnects. Could it be that my lack of up-to-date iMac Firmware is causing this problem?
I have taken my work laptop, an iBook G4, home, and plugged it in to the network - it connects OK, so the problem resides with the iMac. As it takes so long to download updates, is it possible to download them at work and transfer them to my home iMac via a memory stick?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Richard

I just reread your original post. It's possible your internal modem has died. 'Yikes! 'Hope it hasn't. Does it dial and try to connect? Have you tried reselecting it in the network CP? Have you run "Repair Permissions" in the Disk Utility application?
Your firmware version should be 4.1.9f1.
Yes, transfering update downloads on a thumb-drive would work fine.
Yea, all computers are great when they work, and a pain when they don't!

Why has my ipad lost connectivity to the AT&T cellular data network after upgrading to iOS 8.1.2?  My iPad is model #MD367LL/A, 32 GB WIFI + Cellular, about 2-1/2 years old. It;s been working perfectly up until now.  I have no problem on my home WIFI, or through personal hotspot working through my iPhone 5.
I have worked with AT&T, replaced the SIM card with a new one, and done a backup/restore to factory settings, all with the same result that when I turn Cellular
Data on, with or without Enable LTE, it goes into "searching" mode, or reports "no service".  My iPhone 5 works perfectly on iOS 8.1.2, on Cellular.  I've browsed the blogs and have tried Apple's suggested fix, all to no result.
Oddly enough, every once in a while I do get connected to the network for a short ime (minutes), but it always returns to "searching".
I've filed a report with Apple, along with a request that they contact me, but no results yet.
    Help? (and thank you).

Hello razmee209.  Thank you for your response.  I spent the better part of yesterday working with Apple Support.  They tried their best, to include backing up photos to my HP laptop, backing up the iPad to iCloud, then resetting the iPad in total.  Same problem.  I restored from the cloud to recover my apps, same problem.
AT&T installed a new sim card - same problem.  I spent time with AT&T Support yesterday, too.  In both cases, (Apple and AT&T) the support techs who worked with me were extremely polite, courteous and helpful to the best of their abilities, but I think the problem lies deeper, and nobody at Apple is admitting they have a problem with iOS 8, that I'm aware of.
I didn't have this issue before I upgraded to iOS 8.1.2.
Everything else with the iPad works fine:  WIFI, Personal Hotspot, email, all my apps, etc.
In browsing the web for this issue I see that many other folks have the same problem.  I filed a report with Apple this morning, requesting that they contact me, but no word yet.  I was going to go to iPhone 6, and had been considering the iPad Air 2, but I see reports of this problem with those units as well.
At this point I don't think I'll be spending any more money with Apple, at least not till this issue is resolved.
Thanks again for your response and suggestions.

When our iPad is in use on the internet, my iMac internet connection goes off. I can't get the two devices to work at the same time with the AirPort Express. Is there a setting somewhere I may have missed?

When two or more devices conflict it typically means that the DHCP service is either misconfigured or is not running at all. DHCP provides IP addresses to local network clients.
Is your AirPort Express base station the only router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly to an Internet modem and not to another router upstream of it?

Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see double lines it's a Video card/VRAM problem, if the lines do not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.
If your screenshot isn't showing the stripes here, it will most likely mean the screen, LCD panel, is the problem.

  • Why does my iPhone not show up in iTunes on a mac that has a shared internet connection from another mac?

I have what I would consider a difficult question. I called Apple Care and after she spoke to a senior advisor, the representative ended up saying it wasn't possible.
Having said that, I'm sure this is not a difficult question for people with networking expertise.
    Setup
So...I have a MacBook receiving a WiFi signal via AirPort.
In System Preferences, I have turned on Internet sharing (share airport over Ethernet).
I connected the Ethernet port on my MacBook to the Ethernet port on my MDD PowerMac G4.
At this point, I can successfully browse the web, perform software updates, and view other computers and iTunes libraries on my network from my G4.
    Goal
However, in iTunes on my G4 I would like to use iTunes DJ.
    Tried
    So...I click on iTunes DJ.
I set the settings (button in bottom right) to allow guest remotes, etc.
I turned on iTunes Home Sharing (logged into the same account as by iPhone).
    Problem
However, from the Remote app on my iPhone, I am unable to see the library on my G4.
Also, if I want to pair my iPhone Remote app with iTunes on my G4, I click add Library in the Remote app, but iTunes on the G4 never displays my iPhone in the left column (although I am able to see all other iTunes libraries being shared on the network).
Thus, I cannot connect to iTunes as a guest Remote, nor can I connect as paired remote.
I have successfully done both of these things with computers connected directly to my modem, as well as with computers connected via WiFi.
The problem is connecting devices to computers that get their internet connection though another computer via internet sharing.
    Question
So my question is about Internet sharing itself. Is it not a fully featured ad-hoc network? Does it only provide browsing capabilities and the ability to browse networked computers, but NOT devices such as an iPhone? I don't see the difference; my iPhone is on the same network as the computers, so why is there no communication between it and computers that gain their Internet connection through another computer?
I really hope someone out there who is an expert in networking can help me out with this. Or if it truly is impossible, if someone could explain to me why that is the case, I would also appreciate it.
ps. I usually have my MacBook sharing its Internet connection through an old router that I am using as a switch because I share the connection with three other computers. And if it isn't obvious, the modem is downstairs, and the MacBook, old router being used as a switch, and other computers are upstairs where there is no Ethernet wired.
Thank you in advance for any help.

  • Using mates Imac internet connection?

    HI
Going to my mates tomorrow, he has an imac 20 etherneted into a router and no wireless set up as yet.
Question, if i take my MBPro round there to do some holiday research, can my MBP connect to his Imac somehow, and use the internet through his Imac?
If so, HOW do I do it?
    Many thanks in advance

Your mate will have to create the Network on his imac because it is plugged into a network.
+You can create a wireless network between two or more AirPort-enabled computers without using an AirPort Base Station. Using what is known as a “computer-to-computer” network, you can share files or play your favorite multiplayer network game over the airwaves.+
+Computer-to-computer networks are sometimes referred to as ad-hoc networks.+
    +To create a computer-to-computer network:+
+Choose Create Network from the AirPort status icon in the menu bar.+
+If the icon isn’t in the menu bar, choose Apple > System Preferences, and then click Network. Click AirPort and select the “Show AirPort status in menu bar” checkbox.+
+Give the network a name and select a channel from the pop-up menu. The default channel is 11, but you can choose channel 1 or channel 2.+
+Select the Require Password checkbox to protect your network with a password. Type the password users will need to enter in order to join your network. Do the following:+

+Type a password of exactly 5 ASCII characters or 10 hexadecimal digits if you chose “40-bit WEP (more compatible)” from the Security pop-up menu.+

+Type a password of exactly 13 ASCII characters or 26 hexadecimal digits if you chose “128-bit WEP” from the Security pop-up menu.+
OR Just bring your MBP to his house and turn on your Airport in the System Preferences>Network. It will automatically search for networks and display them. When you see his displayed ask him for his password and enter it. That should be it. Sorry if this is confusing.

  • Imac;internet connection drops but other devices still work fine

    Hey Guys,
I have an Imac 2.5 Ghz running Lion 10.7.5. My internet connection keeps dropping about every 30 minutes or so while my other devices (Mac book and iPhone 5) are working absolutley fine. This is resolved when I turn my wifi off and on, but only for about 30 minutes. Using browsers is fine this way but say online gaming is a disaster. I've tried several approaches, I renewed my DHCP license, which seemed to work for a while but after a few weeks the problem resurfaced and renewing didn't work anymore. I tried different DNS adresses but that does about the same as turning the wifi of and on. I tried rebooting the router too, didn't work and i tried deleting my network and forcing the computer tos tart all over again. I also tried chaning the MTU size, also with no avail.
Any suggestions would be very welcome!
    Cheers,

There is a utility called iPhone Configuration Utility that you can download from apple.com - iPhone Configuration Utility 3.5 for Mac OS X (there is a windows version as well).
You can connect the iPhone via USB to a Mac and try to connect to WiFi, the Summary tab produces a console log of the connection messages.
If the unprotected access works, but protected does not, the hardware has very little knowledge of higher level protocols. It is unlikely to be a HW issues.
Can you connect to other protected networks other than your home?
Was an Diagnostics run conducted another of your devices?
If you have more than one Access points, it may be worth looking at your configuration at home.

  • As with many, Yosemite has killed my internet connection.

So, I tried upgrading to Yosemite the day of, and like many others here, my internet connection (wifi and ethernet) has yet to work.  I've tried a few different "tricks" but I haven't had any success.  I've even tried downgrading back to Mavericks, but most of the installed programs are non-existent.  Any suggestions?
    2010 iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core I3
    ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB

I have the same issue. As many I tried doing this:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
Which will fix the internet connection till your next reboot or till you logoff. As soon as you login again or restart your Mac you will encounter the same problem again though. The underlying cause seems to not be with the internet or wifi connection though but with the way Mac OS X Yosemite resolves DNS. If you browse the web by using just IP addresses it'll work just fine.
Before Yosemite DNS was handled by mDSNResponder which eventually got replaced with discoveryd.
When I went to check my /System/Library/LaunchDaemons folder though I found that discoveryd.plist, discovery_helper.plist were sitting right next to mDSNResponder.plist and mDNSResponder_helper.plist.
My log files also showed a lot of entries saying: connect() failed path:/var/run/mDNSResponder
Maybe the actual mDNSResponder was correctly removed during the update process but the plist files in the LaunchDaemons folder remained causing our current problems ... I'm not sure.
What I did was I removed mDNSResponder.plist and mDNSResponder_helper.plist from my /System/Library/LaunchDemons folder and so far my internet connection seems to be working fine even after I restart my Mac or logoff and login again.

  • Unable to update devices, receiving error 3014 on iTunes, and device via wifi is stating "Not connected to the internet", when it has an active internet connection

    Hi,
I have been encountering this issue and I have run out of ideas as to what would be causing this error. On numerous apple devices for our business I will receive an error 3014 when updating a device via iTunes, and this is after the software update downloads. When attempting to update the device over wifi it states that the device is not connected to the internet, when I ensured that the device has active internet connectivity.
Our business uses a Juniper firewall, which I thought might have been the initial cause of the issue, however I have ensured that ports 80 and 443 have full traffic flow and nothing blocking it, and I've also exempted all *.apple.com websites that I could find listed online.
I have also tried deleting the host files on the computer I am using to circumvent the issue.
If anyone could shed some light on what I can do to resolve this, that would be appreciated.

    Hi evanVIT,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that issues like the one you are experiencing can be very frustrating. For this situation however, for update errors in the range of 3000-3020, I would recommend the troubleshooting steps located in the attached article. Please use the steps and information as a reference.
