Why has my MacBook Pro stopped saving state to disk when battery runs out?

In the past, when my battery was running low, I could carry on working safe in the knowledge that the system state would be saved just before the power completely failed. When power was restored, the saved state was restored and I could carry on.
Now it seems to just die and then I'm left to the mercy of any app-based autosave.
What's changed?!!

Doubt your cpu needs any thermal grease... Upgraded my MBP (early 2010) to ML when it first came out, prior to this everything was working flawlessly and I mean one couldn't ask for anything more... After the upgrade it was total garbage with big time overheating, program crashes and a problem where it refused to come out of a deep sleep without a forced shutdown. One thing I never really looked into was how it affected the battery life but one can only assume it took a toll on it as well.
Needles to say I downgraded back to the originally installed OS X ASAP, thankfully we regained our original stability and sanity to boot with no ill affects on the battery. Have read countless posts about these problems and as of yet have not found a resolve to my issues, too gun shy after the experience to even think of giving it another whirl... Lost confident's in Apples ability to get it right as this was downright deplorable in my opinion.
Sorry if this wasn't much help but from reading your post you say "after upgrading" which sounds to me like all was fine prior to switching to ML, no point in tearing apart anything if that is not need.

  • Why has my MacBook Pro stopped outputting audio on external speakers?

Since buying a MacBook Pro in April 2007, I had no problem playing recorded music and Internet radio on external analog speaker systems in two different houses. Suddenly this summer, the audio no longer plays through the external speakers --though it still works fine with the internal speakers. There were no major changes or accidents. The only technical issue I had was the recent malfunctioning of my laptop battery, which Apple acknowledged was defective and replaced yesterday. (I hoped that the problem might be resolved by the new battery. But it hasn't been.) Most of the discussions I've read about audio troubles with the MacBook Pro don't apply to this situation. (The most-discussed problem had to do with the internal speakers no longer working, often because the MBP's audio out port had inadvertently gone into digital audio mode.) My MacBook Pro is a 2.33 MHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.4.11, The mute button is not on. The speaker sound is up to max. And when I check the Sound status in System Preferences, the info line correctly identifies the speakers. The default ID readout is internal speakers. And the ID reads external speakers when I plug the external speakers into the headset/audio out port, But the sound plays only on the internal speakers, not on the external speakers. I miss listening to my music library and favorite NPR stations on a good sound system, where ever I go. I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks

If your computer was hot it wasn't asleep - it either didn't go to sleep or it work up after you put it to sleep. I've seen both things happen. First, read this article and follow the instructions.
    1) For the next few days/weeks pay attention to the blinking light on the front of your computer when you close the lid. Don't put the computer into your backpack/case until it begins to blink. Wait a minute or so after it starts to blink to make sure it doesn't stop blinking - the signal it woke back up.
    2) having followed the above instructions, if you take the computer out and it is hot again or if you take it out and discover it has powered down (you'll know this because when it starts up the battery will be drained and you'll see a progress bar over a ghostly display that will eventually become normal) immediately start the Console program and perform a search on 'sleep' and then 'wake'. This should bring up all the recent log files about sleep state changes (going to sleep and waking up). You should see one for when you put the computer to sleep and put it away and the next one should be just after you got it out. You'll find at least one though that shouldn't be there. That will tell you when the computer work up (when it shouldn't have) and might give a clue as to why.
One of the whys could be a magnet that is making the computer think the lid has been opened.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro with newest OS completely FREEZE when it comes out of sleep mode?  Need to hard start with power button.  Hating Apple right now.

Sleep mode.  Open lid.  Nothing.  beach ball forever.  Need to hold power button and hard start EVERY DAY.  This is stupid because I heard of this problem a year or so ago.  Fix???

  • Why does my macbook pro stop loading the webpage every time i try to access netflix or youtube?

Why does my macbook pro stop loading the webpage (in safari) every time I try to access netflix or youtube?

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Why has my new ipad stopped saving photos from Facebook?  Problem could have started when I downloaded the new OS.

Why has my new IPad stopped saving pictures from Facebook.  Worked originally and problem may have started when I downloaded OS 6.

You are correct that the behavior started when you installed iOS 6 - but as Chetan6518 explained - you now have to configure it in the settings.
Along with the suggestion above, there is also a Photos setting in Privacy and that gives access to approved apps for photos as well.
Last of all, make sure that you haven't set a photos restriction in Settings>General>Restrictions>Privacy>Photos

  • Why did my MacBook Pro stopped working

    Hey,
Yesterday my MacBook Pro stopped working (got stuck on the opening screen with the spinning wheel)
I fixed it..but my question is what made it do this?
    Thanks,

Oh - your profile shows 10.8 - which is Mountain Lion.
There's no telling what could cause a one-time event like that - could be any number of things - but if it happens again, call back.

  • Macbook Air (11 inch) does NOT go in hibernation mode when battery runs out

    Hi,
I have a problem with my new Macbook Air. When the battery runs out to 0% it does NOT go into hibernation mode, it just turns itself off and all my data is lost. It never happened to my old 2008 Macbook Air!
I have all updates, the 1.4Ghz Macbook with 4GB RAM upgrade in case that matters. Hope anyone can help? Is there perhaps a setting where I can set at which Percentage (%) the Macbook should go into hibernation? Thanks in advance!

Noone knows a solution? I also still have problems with my Macbook not waking up properly (like everyone else). The main problem is, however, that it SHUTS down when the battery is empty and does not hibernate!
And I can't install the MacBook Air Late 2010 Software Update 2.0 - I always get this message: "MacBook Air (Late 2010) Software Update can’t be installed on this disc. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
    - The update also does not show up in Software Update, I had to download it manually!
And I believe its NOT because I have 10.6.6 because I have talked to others who have the same problem under 10.6.5!

  • Why has my macbook pro suddenly got slower?

My macbook pro has been working perfectly fine until this morning. When i turned it on it was much slower than usual, so i force quit all applications and restarted it. It had no effect so i tried it again but it is still very slow! Can anyone give any tips as to why this might happen/how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Why has my macbook pro serial number changed after getting it repaired?

I just noticed that the serial number in the 'about this mac' information has a different serial number to what is on the back of the macbook pro, which is the same serial number on my apple care/phone . I had a lot of issues with my macbook pro it was sent to repair in july 2013 then in august 2013. Why has the serial number changed? I tried using my original serial number to use the online apple care service however it did not recgonice my serial number when I tried the new serial number it regconised it but said I did not have apple care but I do. I don't know what the apple team have done to my macbook as it requires to go in for repair again.

Was it repaired at Apple or an authorized service provider?
You need to contact the repair place/store and/or call Apple and make them aware of the problem - sooner rather than later. Make sure you give them the repair/case number so they can find the paperwork for it.
I had a logic board replaced and the tech also did not do anything - I called Apple and the tech came back to my house to take care of it. It's important because you want to make sure that your Applecare is being associated with the right serial number.

    kva,
which model MacBook Pro do you have? Is it running Mac OS X 10.5.5? If not, which version of OS X is currently installed on it?
Are you running on battery when it shuts down, or are you running on AC when it shuts down, or does it happen in either case? Which app are you working in when it shuts down? Does it happen only in that app, or does it happen no matter which app you’re working in?

Can you tell us how much RAM  (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the  in your title  bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.
We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.
If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.
If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:
We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

  • Macbook Pro 3.1 looses power completely when battery at 6..9%

I recently got a new battery for my 2007 Macbook Pro 3.1. Whenever I'm running on battery, the Macbook gives me a warning at 10% remaining battery life and loosed power all of a sudden when reaching 6..9%. All work is lost, when I reconnect the charger cable the Macbook restarts completely and doesn't just wake up from sleep.
    Questions:
    - How can I calibrate the battery correctly if a complete shut down happens before reaching 0% (as I understand the calibration procedure I need to discharge the battery from 100% to 0% in one go)
    - Can a faulty PRAM battery cause this problem?
    - Can I check the status of the PRAM battery?
    Thanks for any help
    John

Shown below is the discharge curve of my A1275 battery (it contains 3 individual cells) vs. time. After 2h6min the hard shutdown occurs each time - at a 'remaining' capacity of ~300mAh.
The battery itself doesn't get calibrated to a lower value, it remains at some 5044-5090mAh when doing a calibration.
The true capacity seems to be only ~4600-4700mAh, but since the calibration procedure doesn't work successfully with this battery, the problem will persist.
Maybe there is a way to lower the battery capacity on purpose to a lower value. There might be a possibility with IO_reg.... (?)
