Why has Safari suddenly started to freeze my whole system, about once a week?

The whole thing just jams and the only way out of it is a hard shutdown and then a restart.
This didn't happen before and I haven't added any new add-ons to Safari since I don't know when - a year ago, maybe more.

Note the date and time the problem occurred, then go to Applications/Utilities/Console and copy the log starting at the time of the crash. Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. Be selective about what you post and don’t  post huge amounts. Why has Safari suddenly disappeared from my iPhone?

It is not possible to delete Safari, it may have moved to a different screen.  Do a search for the app or you can click on your settings>general>reset then select reset home screen layout.

  • Why has mail suddenly started saying that my outgoing mail server is offline?

Why has mail suddenly started saying that my outgoing mail server is offline?
I can receive mail from my ISP using Apple Mail but as of this morning I can't send via my ISP.
When I check Mail preferences, they say that my ISP's outgoing mail server is "offline".
I haven't changed any settings, so  what's gone wrong? I need a fix. At the moment I'm having to use Gmail.

If your email is hosted by Google then there are several known issues with Apple Mail under Mavericks accessing Gmail.  Using a web browser is a good backup.  In Apple Mail you can goto the menubar, choose Mailbox and choose take all accounts offline.  Then bring them back online.  Worst case you may need to delete and readd the account (usually if something was setup wrong) Menu bar - Mail > Accounts.
If you have turned on 2 step Google Authentication then you'll need to issue a specific email password for Apple Mail to use to bypass authentication.  Google the steps.
Best of luck in getting your mail server online.  Hopefully you can specify multiple servers in settings.

  • Why did Safari suddenly start "never" accepting cookies?!?

Two days ago, Safari suddenly by default is set to "never" accept cookies whenever I load safari. I always have it set to the cookies setting "Only from sites I visit". Every time I use Safari now, I have to manually change it back from "never" to "Only from sites I visit".
I've deleted the plist file and cache. What else can I do to fix this?

I've deleted the plist file and cache.
If you are referring to the com.apple.Safari.plist file try this instead...
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left then open the LIbrary folder then the Cookies folder.
Move the Cookies.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. Launch Safari. Go to the Preferences / Security pane. Make sure Only from sites I visit is selected.
    See if it will stay.
if not, check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. Could be an Extension over riding your Cookies preferences. If you have any Extensions installed, turn that off, see if it makes a difference.

  • Why has Aperture suddenly started "beachballing"?

It appears that ever since I have started "Vaulting" (Verbatim portable HD); Aperture has become slow and started beachballing every time I launch application. The trainer at the store installed iStat(?) but it hasn't helped me with anything. I am editing and printing my pictures OK, but the slowness of the "Preview" and "Thumbnails" and this beachballing are driving me crazy. Anyone got any ideas? Many thanks.

Drives slow as they fill beyond about half full. Your drive is less than half full, so when no external drive is attached the drive(s) are unlikely to be part of the slowdown. Images fill drives quickly, however, so later on (after this current issue is resolved) personally I would "Reference" Master images by moving new originals to an external drive prior to importing into Aperture because trying to keep originals on a laptop drive usually sooner or later overfills the internal drive.
You did not state your RAM, but whatever it is you should max it out like Steven suggests; very important. Laptops and iMacs are by definition limiting to heavy graphics apps, so we want to max out hardware as best we can and keep setups as clean as possible.
A good idea is to restart your Mac before each session with Aperture, and do not have any other unnecessary apps open, especially browsers. Keep the OS, Aperture and other apps up to date at their most current levels, and like Steven suggests turn off Preview building while you are working. If you run Photoshop concurrently be aware that it too can be a RAM hog; if you are not yet on PSCS3, upgrade now because PSCS3 is fastest and Rosetta emulation will absolutely kill performance.
Also, be aware that all kinds of things affect overall operational speed with heavy graphics apps. Although repairing Permissions is not a fix for poor performance, many of us on the PS forums, for instance, find that religiously repairing Permissions immediately before and immediately after every installation of any kind helps keep a graphics box running more smoothly. Similarly, avoiding letting games or crapware (e.g. any free non-Apple app) get anywhere near the box also helps.
Under System Preferences/Energy Saver set to "Optimize Performance," and when possible run attached to a/c power when using Aperture.
Good luck! Please let us know how it all resolves.

P.S. I recommend the US$35 tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2 (Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008), Amazon.com. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.
P.P.S. Steve Weller, builder of the excellent <http://www.bagelturf.com/index.html> Aperture website, discusses speed improvements here:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1273934&tstart=75>
To really maximize performance after hardware is optimized, work to dial in each of the performance tweaks he discusses.

  • Why has Firefox suddenly started trying to close everything when I try to close a preview pane of a single, seperate webpage??

Since the last update, everytime I try to close a firefox window from the preview, firefox wants to close ALL of my windows and tabs. I just want to close a pop up, I don't think it's unreasonable to be able to do that without actually switching to it. I haven't had any problem with this in the past.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • Why has LR4 suddenly started to refuse to download RAW CR2 files?

Today I went to LR4 and tried to import RAW CR2 files into the program using the usual import process which is pretty automatic. I also asked that copies be saved as DNG files. No matter what I tried, I got an error message saying that the files could not be imported. I use a Canon 5D Mark III. The only difference in today's shoot was that I used and HDSC card instead of a CF card. No other obvious changes. Clearly, this is a serious concern. What amI missing?

    Hi,
I too have been having trouble importing CR2s consistently using Lightroom 4.3. I use a Canon 5D Mark III with Macbook OS X 10.7.
Spoke with Canon this morning and apparently they are getting a few calls about this problem. For me, it is not a permissions issue.
I swapped cards, cords, reinstalled Lightroom and updated everything. I bought a card reader and that is the only thing that works.
Seems to be some kind of communication problem between Lightroom (4.3) and my Canon 5D M3.

  • My mac has started sending yahoo emails out as if they were being sent from an old gmail account I haven't used in years. Why has this just started happening?

My mac has started sending yahoo emails out as if they were being sent from an old gmail account I haven't used in years. Why has this just started happening?

It is important to understand that Mail uses TWO servers, a Receiving Server and a Sending Server.
When you create a new mail message, or reply to a message, the Sender server is shown in the message composition window like this:
That drop-down window allows you to select which of the Sending Servers you previously set up should be used.
In general, once you choose a Sending server, its choice will "stick" for all future replies to messages from that Receiving mailbox.

  • HT4060 Suddenly my iPad won't charge. A box appears saying 'this accessory is not supported'. What does this mean. Why has it suddenly appeared?

Suddenly my I pad won't charge. A box appears saying 'this accessory is not supported'. What accessory? What does this mean? Why has it suddenly happened? What do I do?

    Hi Eileen,
With iOS 7, the devices have become more sensitive to the type of cable that is being used to charge the device. I have found that with my iPhone 4, once I upgraded to iOS 7, it became a little more sensitive to even my iPad charger. It doesn't always recognize it if I just plug it in, but if I slide it in slowly until I hear the charging tone, then I can push it the rest of the way in, and everything works as it should.
Any chance the cable is bent or frayed? How long have you had the device and cable? If it is under a year old, take it into the Apple Store (device and cable) so you can show them what is happening. They should replace your cable.
    Cheers,

  • Why has my mail started storing under Load More Messages. I'm now unable to access my mail messages.

Why has my mail started storing under Load More Messages. I'm now unable to access my mail messages.

This is my basic, first start, recommended "fix" when these types of weird, unexplained things occur on the iPad. Give it a try. After you reboot, go back to the mail app and see if the messages will load.
Quit the mail app completely and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Why has my iMac started to be slow logging on

Why has my iMac started to be slow when first logging on, is it anything to do with me upgrading to Mavericks from 10.7, and is there any way it can be rectified?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Freezes on startup about once a week...

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 quad 2.66 that freezes on the gray screen with the apple logo about once a week or so. When it crashes the progress wheel appears and starts rotating under the apple logo. After that the the progress wheel will just stop and the machine will just sit there. Sometimes it attempts to restart itself but the same thing will happen. Otherwise, the machine operates perfectly with no other anomalies. Most start-ups are successful. Any thoughts?

This issue can be caused by the presence of leftover files in the Firefox program folder (defaults\pref) like a file firefox.js that overrides the update URL with a wrong link.
Do a clean reinstall and be sure to remove the Firefox program folder to remove the file(s) that cause the problem.

Every once in a while, letters stop working on my keyboard. I have to restart to get them to work again. Happens about once a week. Why and how do I keep this from Happening? An example is: I try to type Super Excited and the U, E and P won't work. But once I restart, all the letters work.

It could be an accumulation of all sorts of bits of info and depending on the last time you cleared the system cache either manually or via a factory reset on that phone you might find a difference there after doing so with many other system caches.
Clearing the application cache removes temporary files and frees up memory - your personal settings or information remain intact.
Be sure you clear only the application cache and not the application data.
From the home screen, tap Apps.
    Scroll to and tap Settings.
    Tap More.
    Tap Application manager.
Swipe left to view the All tab.
Scroll to and tap an application.
    Tap Clear cache.
You've now cleared the application cache.
