Why has the free upgrade 'expired'?

Why was there an expiration date on the upgrade? It seems unfair, as it should only matter when you bought the computer.
I'm pretty angry as I bought my macbook (without leopard) on the 1st of October through the education store. I had to buy it then as my old PC died and I urgently needed a computer.
I've been OK with Tiger but I really need the time machine feature of Leopard. I was under the impression I would get a free upgrade but couldn't find any information on it until now (there was nothing with the computer). I've been pretty busy with work, so after a bit of browsing on the apple site I just assumed I'd be able to upgrade for free/low cost when I had the time. So now, after extensively searching the forums, I find that I could have got Leopard for free, but this wasn't widely advertised, so I've missed the expiration date.
Do I have to just bite the bullet and spend yet more money on software? (I've switched from PC, and the macbook was good value, but all the software I've had to buy has proved expensive). The education discount doesn't seem enough when I can get a copy of Windows on an academic site license for free.
It wouldn't have hurt apple to stick a leaflet in the computers sold in October explaining how you could get a free upgrade. Or even an e-mail with a link.

What upgrade are you talking about?
If you are referring to the "just in time" update, I can only ask where you have been. That expired a very long time ago. If you buy a new computer, it already has Leopard on it. If you bought a computer 6 months ago, what do you expect? Everyone knew about the conditions of the "up to date" policy last year. If you bought yours in October, I don't think you were qualified anyway. But I may be wrong. You simply waited too long before acting.
If you really need Leopard, just buy it. As a student, it's heavily discounted, right?
This board is for technical questions, not complaints about things we have no control over.
What Apple should have done is fantasy. This is 2008. It was your responsibility, not Apple's. You have to take personal responsibility for these things and not blame the "other guy."
Again, this is the wrong place to rant and your post and mine may well be deleted as the border on violating Apple's posting rules.
You are a day late and a dollar short, as they say.

  • OK, guys, why does the free upgrade to Mavericks fail?

I'm pretty sure this has been asked & answered several times.  I waited until now to accept the free upgrade because of the problems mentioned in reviews and here in discussions. It worked on the upgrade download for two and a half hours, then told me it failed. No error message with numbers or anything, just told me to go to app store purchases? I think that's what it said. Any ideas, I didn't have anything running, left the computer on and read a magazine while watching my old TV. Sitting right here at my desk. Are there problems with the anti virus or security things now? It hasn't fussed about anything like that on previous downloads.

    Linda --
Go to the App Store, click on purchases, and see if you can re-download your Mavericks.  I think you should be able to finish or restart the download there.  Turn off any AV/Security stuff.  You don't have FileVault on there, do you?
In your System Preferences > Firewall, make sure it is off. Turn it back on after your download.
Make sure you're not using wireless, and don't pause it at all.

It's possible something has become corrupted in your AppStore cache folder. I had the same problem that occurred after I did a partial download, paused it, and attempted to restart it again later. Here's how I fixed my problem:
    Enable AppStore Debug menu:
    1. Quit AppStore completely.
    2. Run Terminal and enter the following on the command line: defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
    3. Restart the AppStore. You should see a new menu called "Debug".
    Clear the download cache:
    4. In AppStore, select Debug menu / Show Download Folder
    5. Quit AppStore completely, but leave download folder open
    6. In the download folder, select all files/folders, then delete them.
    7. Restart AppStore. You may need to sign in to your Apple account again.
You may need to restart your computer to be able to delete the files from the trash.
You can then try the download again.

That was the first thing I check, my X no longer exist, the app still works fine and does everything it did in the past, the the x (delete) option is no longer there.  I have deleted and redownloaded the app and did a complete reset, X still not there as an option.  Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

  • Just finished update. While in the Tips, why did it tell me I have an old version? Hey there! Looks like you're using an old version of Firefox. Don't miss out on the latest technology & security features. Get the free upgrade in less than a minute.

The top of the screen has an owl like icon & then the following message:

Dear Colbabomb; thankyou for your links.
So far, I looked at your first solution, Revo Uninstaller and it gives you a 30 free trial. Ergo, it will eventually cost money so I'm leery of using those kinds of programs in general, meaning most "free trials" have unwanted strings attached and often are big probs to get rid of later. Perhaps you can assure me that it is easy and very user friendly, before I proceed. And I already ran malwarebytes and it found nothing tho the program still can't be uninstalled. I downloaded Adw Cleaner and during the install, my Norton's security popped up and warned that there were (low risk) threats with two of their "other offers" and i hadn't even actually clicked to agree either of them. Nonetheless, Norton warned me against the "lyrics finder" and "deal ply." In fact, there was a box already with an x in it, saying that you are accepting deal ply if you x on "next." Well, except I unchecked that box before clicking on next, yet when it went to fully install, it still showed that it was adding itself; so, just before the install was 100% completed, I had to abort the whole thing. I really do hope your other suggestions are programs that you personally know that they don't try and trick you. But right now, I would not suggest Adw Cleaner to anyone. I even read the fine print about what they will try and install and how to decline and it still tried sticking stuff on that i believed I had declined. Anyways, i have to leave now, shall pick up later this evening, if my pc is still functioning.

  • HT5429 Why has the maps app gone so sour in IOS6 can I revert to IOS5?

Why has the maps app gone so sour in IOS6.The images at any reasonable magnification are colourless and so fuzzy as to be useless.I loved my old Google based system which even allowed me to look into my house window from the street view function.I wish I had never accepted the invitation to upgrade to IOS6 I would like to go back tithe old system

Google and Apple have apparently parted ways in the 'bundled apps' area.
If you don't like the bundled map app, then your option is to look for a replacement in the app store.

  • I did the free upgrade of os x yosemite and was wondering if any of possibly deleting or uninstall it from my computer

i currently did the free upgrade that was on the apple store for os x yosemite, and it has yet to stop with the issues. Why do you need to re-install? Try to fix the problem.
I would assume a 10.2 full install would be fairly cheap on ebay.

  • Full version pshop CS (8), upgraded to CS4. Recieved the free upgrade to CS5... will this work?

    Hi,
Appologies if this seems like a stupid enquiry. I'll keep it quick and simple.
I had been running a full version of photoshop CS (aka photoshop version 8). I just bought the upgrade to CS4 and also (to answer other questions on this forum) I just received the free upgrade to CS5 from Adobe. Not having an intel Mac yet I plan to sit on my CS5 upgrade till I have the machine to run it. My question to anyone who knows/has done this, can I install my CS5 upgrade given that my original full copy of photoshop was version CS (ie. more than 3 versions back)...?
    I have seen this discussion:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2734196#2734196
but it still leaves me unsure (would Tai Lao be able to install CS5 if he wanted too I wonder...???).
Before anyone asks I have asked Adobe via the customer support portal and they said that I 'could install CS5 upgrade from CS4 upgrade' (which still doesn't answer the question, does my having CS stop me upgrading to CS5 due to the "3 version back upgrade policy"...?
    Thanks for the help!
    Matt

    Matt,
    Focus for a second please:
All Adobe upgrades are FULL INSTALLERS.  If the upgrade does not find a previous version installed, it will simply ask you for the old serial number as well.  That's all.
You now have a valid CS4 serial number.  When you install CS5, the installer will look for a previously installed version.  If you have installed CS4, it will proceed automatically to install CS5.  If you did not install CS4, just use its serial number when prompted. (NOTE:  This is based on the assumption that CS was indeed a qualifying version to upgrade to CS4.  I don't remember what the requirements were back then.)
I have Photoshop 7.0.1, 8 (CS), 9.0.2 (CS2), 10.1 (CS3) and 11.0.1 (CS4) installed on my machine.  All those are upgrades from my original full version 4 of Photoshop from many, many years ago.  I can run all of them on my machine, even simultaneously If I wanted to, by launching the older version(s) first.  In practice, I have run two versions simultaneously without any problems.
Just have your CS4 serial number handy.
Now, be advised that an awful lot of users are having nightmarish difficulties with the CS5 installer.  If you run into trouble, don't blame it on the serial number, just blame the extraordinarily incompetent members of the pathetic installer team.  That's a team outside of the Photoshop engineering team that has proven a disgraceful embarrassment to Adobe engineers and executives.  A senior program manager has even admitted in private correspondence that he can't write in public what he would like to do to the members of the installer team.

Of course I could, if I wanted to and had an Intel machine.  However, I have rejected Leopard and Snow Leopard, and I will stay with CS4 and Tiger 10.0.4.11 for the foreseeable future, which means for the remainder of my life expectancy, as I can't afford a new machine.

Matt, the "3 version back upgrade policy" simply means that you have to have a valid serial number for one of the three versions, and you do have a valid number for CS4, which in turn was based on your valid number for CS.
    Stop tormenting yourself.

I bought my Macbook Pro on 23rd July 2011 and was told that I was able to get the free upgrade to OS X Lion, and that it would automatically update when I register my Mac. I registered it when I first turned it all on, I then waited thinking that it might be in a system update package. This, however, never happened. Am I eligable for the free update, if so, how do I get it? I am currently running on the latest version of Snow Lepeord.

Yes, it's in your Applications folder and is called "Install OS X". Make sure to empty your trash afterwards to clear the space.
