Why has udev gotten so slow?

All of the sudden, the udev daemon is taking about 7 seconds to start... I'm pretty sure that version 0.78 took all of 1 second. What's happening here? Is udev also loading modules on startup now, or something?

If you're not using Testing, it's because you don't have the relevent version of udev.
What I meant about it going on too long was that "Starting UDev Daemon" stays on the screen for a over 5 seconds, but the udev daemon has started up and loaded all the modules after a little over one second.
Your use of ReiserFS brings up something interesting though... ReiserFS (~3.5 seconds) is very good at dealing with lots of small files, JFS (~5.5 seconds) is almost as good at that, and ext3 (12 seconds, according to my watch) is pretty bad at dealing with lots of tiny files. Something of a pattern there... Maybe the read speed for the little files in /proc and /sys is involved? But that shouldn't matter, /proc and /sys are virtual filesystems!
(Re reiserfsck running twice, I don't know. It probably does that for the same reason that other things in bootcharts do... Unless you've got your ReiserFS partitions specified for fscking in /etc/fstab, which isn't necessary, as ReiserFS filesystems are (stupidly IMHO) fscked on mount.)

Apple Mail and iPhoto have their own separate Trash to empty.
Have you emptied these?

If doing these things only marginally helps, next is to upgrade your RAM memory.
Newer Intel versions of OS X use a lot more CPU, GPU, hard drive and RAM resources.
The 4 GBs of RAM in your iMac is really the working minimum of RAM needed just to run OS X, alone, by itself.
Start running additonal applications and your iMac is going to slow down.
Your iMac can take a max. amount of 32 GBs of RAM.
Install, at least, another 4 GBs of RAM. Install more if you can afford it.

Why has iTunes gone really slow

Ok for some reason after updating from one of the software updates for mountain lion, iTunes has now become really slow! It's extremely annoying because every time I open it up the whole mac becomes slow and lags loads! I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing anything like this or is it just me? Also if you know what's wrong, please help me as I can't do anything whilst iTunes is syncing my iPhone and iPad. Thanks.

Why has my Macbook become slow and unresponsive

Can anyone please help? I have an old Macbook Pro which has become slow and unresponsive. Why does my cursor keep moving to a different part of the page or worse still the entire copy will disappear. Please can someone give me some advice as to what I should do?

Why has new update totally slowed my computer down?

the new update has slowed my computer down drastically. Sites load very slowly, and sometimes not at all. Then, it continually reverts to "Firefox Updated" page

the password is an old one that I have not used in some time.
Quit Safari.
Open Keychain Access /Applications/Utilities
Select Passwords on the left.
Delete all the keychains for the sites you have trouble logging into.
Relaunch Safari then go to Safari / Preferences, seleect the Autofill tab. Make sure: User names and passwords is selected.
Now select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all cookies or just the ones for the sites you mentioned.
Navigate to a site. After entering your user name and password, you should be prompted to save that data, click Yes. That will create a new keychain for you.
if you still have problems, open Keychain Access again. From the menu bar click Keychain Acces / Keychain FirstAid. Enter your admin password then click Verify. If necessary, click Repair.

Why has my Ipad become slow when loading Keynote presentations?

I use Keynote on Ipad as a presentation tool. Recently, the Ipad has been slow to load a presentation (up to 3 seconds after selecting a particular presentation). It also randomly updates presentations that haven't been used recently. Any thoughts?

Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

Why has Firefox become so slow? I hate Google but I've had to switch to Chrome. I'm on a top of the range Mac Mavericks with latest Firefox browser.

Never mind the volunteers! Why the hell can't the creators of Firefox sort this out? But if they don't want to bother then I'll just forget Firefox and carry on with Chrome.
I've tried all the cute little so-called fixes, cleared the cache, even got some silly thing called Speedy Fox but none of it ever works. Please Firefox, just sort it out.

Why has firefox become so slow and it use to be so fast, why do pages take so long to load now.

Firefox use to be very fast. Now it takes a long time for pages to load. There is no malware or spyware. Hardware is working right. Have started using Safari to get the speed I use to get before, but I miss Firefox. I disabled all my addons and plugins and still at times it reminds me of dial up. I have a cable connection of +15 mps. I also constantly clean my cache so it isn't that. IE is much, much faster as well. I have totally uninstalled it and reinstalled it as well, but it doesn't help.

Maybe it is a problematic add-on? At the top of the Firefox window, select Help<Restart With Add-ons Disabled. This will start Firefox in safe mode. If you notice anything is faster, than chances are the problem you were having was an extension. Disable all of them, then begin enabling them one by one. Restart each time you disable an add-on. If you notice Firefox is slow after enabling a certain add-on, then, problem solved (hopefully).

Resize Find Font window - Is this possible? Why has it gotten smaller?

In a very odd move, the 2014 release of illustrator has made the Find Font window even smaller. This is incredibly frustrating. Many fonts have names that are cut off so the names are indistinguishable. ESPECIALLY extended fonts. Is it possible to re-size this window?
If not, the window should be substantially larger or re-sizable.

I've recently experienced a connection slowdown for both Entourage and Safari. This reminds me of the old dial-up days. My Netgear statistics are - Download: speed 7616kbps, attenuation 22dB, noise 4dB; Upload: 448 / 6.5 / 23. I think these look quite healthy.
Recent changes have been auto Mac OS updates, installation of iMovie HD 6 and updates to 6.03, install iPhoto 6, updated to 6.06 and update to iTunes 7.
The only other changes have been the update of the Netgear (DG834G v2) firmware v3-01-08, and the installation of a network printer, Samsung ML-3051N.
I've had BT check the line for me, but nothing was found.
I've also tried repairing disk permissions, but this made no difference.
Can anyone please help me restore the speed I used to get, or are there any know issues with any of the above software updates?

Since you installed system updates and software updates, run "Repair Disk Permissions" in Disk Utility, if you have not done so recently (after the installations).
In terms of the System Preferences Network pane, select Show *Network Port Configurations*. On the list of network services, make sure +Built-in Ethernet+ is at the top of the list. You can also uncheck services you are not using for networking, just in case there is a bug causing conflict.

Why does my system freeze after ever update from Firefox...and has gotten very slow

My computer freezes during or after every update that come in automatically recently. It has also gotten extremely slow at the same time.

Your setup looks like it should really fly.
Often when people have serious slowdowns like you mention, it comes down to one of two things:
a) Some problem with the user's account. One way to test if this is the case is to create a new admin user and try running FCP X from this new account. If the same projects that were slow behave well in this account you'll know that some setting, or cache, or login item, or whatnot in your own account is responsible.
b) Some problem with a plugin. If there is a plugin that you use all the time, and maybe was not updated for the current version, and can cause slowdowns, then maybe you think it is the machine. See what plugins you are using, and run a test project without them. Does it run as fast as it should?
