Why have all the songs been deleted when upgraded software

Hi my daughters both have an ipod touch which they got for Christmas. They've both tried to update the software this week and both despite backing up their songs have lost both songs and apps. Why is this and what can we do?

Music, inported videos and some other items are not part of the backup. The get synced from your iTunes library at the conclusion of an update. My guess is that the music were not in their iTunes libraries. For want a backup contains see:

You might still be able to recover them using one of the methods discussed in this older thread, but many of them require a full functional, noncorrupted iPod filesystem in order to work properly.

HT1386 I cannot sync my iPod with the Playlists that I want. For example, I have all the songs in my classical Playlist checked but it doesn't appear in my iPod after syncing. Also I don't get an opportunity to review sync options.

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with syncing music to your iPod. For issues like this, I recommend resyncing the music to your iPod.
If you are syncing automatically, resync content to the iPod by unchecking "Sync Music" and clicking "Apply," then checking "Sync Music" and clicking "Apply" again.

iTunes only syncs to Apple devices.
Assuming the media is not DRM protected, any of the media can be dragged and dropped from iTunes onto other drives (external, flash, etc) as the user chooses.

It's only third generation, not 4th
And 'safe' is relative. since it seemed to be a few out there with battery issues or yellowish screens, are they all gone? There's no way to know. Largely because there's no way for anyone but Apple to have any idea just how many devices could have been affected. And they won't tell.
The best you can do is go and get one and know what to be on the lookout for. You might be fine, you might not be, but none of us can know.

I don't relate your last with the fact that you marked your question answered. iTunes content shouldn't be different whatever support you are using to access (iOS, Mac, PC). Only the store homepages is different depending if you access from an iPad, PC or iPhone.
But doing a search should gives you the same result. Could you name the album you don't find on your iOS device with the country you are in?

On plugging my iPod to the iMac, all the songs got deleted on the iPod. Now it doesn't sync to iTunes and it shows that 'mac os can't repair the device'. How can I get my iPod to start functioning normally again? Please help!

Hey! I plugged my 80 gb ipod classic to my imac, but had to switch it off when itunes hung. The ipod wasn't switching on , and when it did, all the data, including all my songs were deleted. Now, when I try syncing it to the mac, it doesn't connect to the itunes and I keep getting an alert saying ' Mac osx can't repair the device'. Now, althought all the data is gone, the ipod still shows 30 gb free. What will happen if I partiton my ipod? How do I get it to start functioning again? Please help!

Try a low level reformat of the iPod's hard drive to possibly try and repair some of its damage. Use the instructions in this article to walk you through the process.

When I updated my Mom's Ipod Nano 6th generation it deleted all the songs in one playlist and then deleted them off my main computer. How can I restore these songs without having to repurchase them?

My Hard disk crashed and I didn't have all the songs backed up

I had to replace my hard disk and only had 3,000 or so songs backed up - I have a total of about 5,000 songs on my 30 Gig Video iPod. Many of the songs I didn't have backed up were purchased songs from iTunes. Is there a way to move those songs from my iPod to my new hard disk?

This is what you will want to do, you will want to go into the tools menu in your windows explorer. Select folder options, click on the view tab. Once you are on the view tab, click on the folder that says hidden files and folders. On the hidden files and folders click show hidden files and folders. Then click ok on the folder options window. When you open the ipod now you will see the ipod control folder. In that folder there will be a music folder. Open that. There will be a number of folders that will begin with F00 you will want to go into the folder and you will see a bunch of song files with coded names. You will want to drag them to where it says library in itunes. The songs will automatically rename themselves to the correct name. Go through each one of the folders like this and your library will be restored.
The only thing that I would tell you is that this will duplicate all the songs in your library. So I would clear your entire library before you start this process

How do i transfer my itunes library onto my new computer, when on the old computer I have all the songs saved onto an external hard drive, which I still wish to use?

At the moment on my old latop I have an external hard drive with all my songs on. I need to attach the hard drive before the songs will play. Any new songs are downloaded onto the external hard drive.

When I have held the shift key down & clicked on the iTunes library that was shown on the external hard drive, it has loaded most of the older albums, however there are several albums which have not appeared on iTunes on the new laptop, but if you go into explorer and look at the folders/files on the hard drive, they do appear on the external hard drive.
I have also noticed my play lists and genres have not shown as they were on the old laptop.
Is there any way of getting a complete copy of all songs, play lists, etc. so that is does not require to hold files in two difference places, I would prefer if all the files were on the external hard drive, so I do not fill the internal hard drive with songs?

You will need to plug it into your computer and re-sync them from iTunes. The iPhone is meant to be synced/backed up to iTunes on your computer on a regular basis. It is NOT a primary or backup storage device.

My ipod all ready had songs on from somewhere (i can not get them back) but i syced my ipod to a different computer and all the songs were deleted ! how do i get them back ? its urgent !

The iPod is not a storage device, all songs should reside on a computer and you can only sync to one machine. However, if these songs were purchased from iTunes you can reload them (see link). If not, and you have no backup, then they are gone.

Excuse me I'm french so it can seem a bit hard to understand but i'll try my best.
I have 4000 songs and I don't know why they all got "ticked off" (the little box on the left of a title is not ticked so they don't play one after the other unless i dont tick them all)

Why did all the songs on my iPod Touch disappear?

I was having some trouble adding an album to my iPod Touch, when all of a sudden, most of the songs on my iPod disappeared. The only ones left are the songs I purchased from iTunes. No, I did not click "autofill" or sync to a new iTunes library. My iTunes iPod library says all my songs are on my iPod, but my iPod only says some of my songs are on it. HOW CAN I GET MY SONGS TO REAPPEAR ON MY IPOD!?!?!
P.S. When I click on a song in iTunes under my iPod that doesn't show up in my iPod, a "!" appears.
