Why I am forced to use wifi instead of cellular connection?

I got very slow wifi connection tethered from another cellular connection to workaround this annoying feature that I cannot download os updates etc. Directly and fast with my ipad cellular connection. Why doesn't ios give that option?

Apple policy - probably for many reasons.
Cellular connection plans often have monthly bandwidth limits.
Hitting the limit might either result in hefty charges or the speed to be reduced to a trickle.
Anyhting over 50 Mb will not download over a cellular connection on iOS.
On iOS7 the cellular download threshold seems to be lifted to 100Mb over a cellular connection. (Over The Air - OTA)

  • How can I set up my iPhone 6 to use wifi instead of cell when available?

since getting my new iPhone 6, my cell data usage has increased while connected to a wifi network at home.  How can I get my iPhone to use wifi if available?

It will always use WiFi if available. If the phone goes to sleep it drops the WiFi connection unless you plug it in to power. Have you checked to see which app is using the cell data?

  • Why am I forced to use Itunes SA if I in anyway travel  between the UD

I unfortunately registered my Apple using my SA address and have since been forced to use the Itunes SA for my application downloads and I also cannot download anything from the Apple Store USA because of this restriction, I travel between countries all the time and spend virtually no time in SA.

I have tried using my USA bank account and have added a USA billing  address but as I have created a SA 'based" account before keeps going back on the SA Store etc. I don't know who's all aware of what is happening in SA regarding "Apple" and "Mackintosh" etc, but its a crying shame. You go into a store, what they have can be anything between two and five years old (on the shelves). The staff knows NOTHING. You go into a shop and you get all these blank stares. I bought a laptop from a "accredited" ha ha ha Apple Store in Menlyn Park, when it picked up a problem I found out  that the one shop assistant had tried to open it in the back of the store using a knife to see if he could fix it himself...only to find that the Laptop had components of LG and Samsung and other generic brands inside, not a Apple laptop at all.The shop assistant was not surprised, he said yes, he knows, the Apple devices bought in SA are from China, assembled there as cheaply as possible...Some Chinese mixup. It was then sent away for repairs, I waited for nearly four months. Was returned still not working so I got rid of it. You access the Itunes Page for SA you will see there's nothing available, very little and no movies nothing. Sad state of affairs. I own nine Apple Devices all bought from the Apple Store on 5 th NYC. I buy nowhere else. So then while being in the USA I can use the Itunes USA store, but immediately when I return I'm thrown back onto the SA sites. Oh my goodness. Ps thank you for your reply anyways..

  • Why does the Java API use int instead of short or byte?

Why does the Java API use int if short or even byte would be sufficient?
Example: The DAY_OF_WEEK field in Calendar uses int.

One of the point is, on the benchmark tests on Java performance, int does far better than short and byte data types.
Please follow the below blog talks about the same.

  • Why are MacBooks so slow using Wifi?

The irony is I've had to jump on my Windows PC to troubleshoot.  Not a single issue with any device in the house connecting to the Wifi and using internet.  Just the MacBook Air.  Why hasn't Apple addressed this?  I can see by the numerous posts and questions this is a very common issue that has been going on for years and the concerning thing is how many similar posts to mine don't seem to get resolved.
Feel duped by Apple and all the hype about their PCs versus Windows based PCs.  Paid double for my laptop and yes it looks pretty and is nice and small, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.  Isn't the point you don't have to be a computer geek to make these things run.
Too bad the laptops aren't as handy as the phones and IPads.
    Dissapointed,

If MacBooks are inherently slow when using Wi-Fi then there is something wrong with all of mine, because they run like blazes.

Your Mac obviously performed well when you bought it, or you would have either immediately returned it for a 100% refund or called AppleCare, who would have fixed it. If AppleCare is no longer an option for you then you have to provide specific details, ask others to help you, and then patiently wait for competent assistance. The only questions that remain unresolved are the ones that lack those requirements. There is an abundance of useful information on this site that will help, if you want to fix your problem and not just rant about it.
Specific guidance requires specific details - until you can provide them read the following:

Memory limitations: Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
Identifying resource hogs and other tips: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
To identify potential hardware problems: Apple Hardware Test
To resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance, use Disk Utility.
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
To repair a potentially corrupt hard disk, so that you may recover its data prior to replacing it, and subsequently reinstall Mac OS X: OS X Recovery (applies only to Lion and later versions of OS X)

  • E66 How do I email using WiFi instead of GPRS?

Hi, this is probably a really simple question.
How do I get my E66 to connect to my mail server using a WIFI network, and not the default GPRS network?
Thanks in advance (p.s. love this phone )

    Solved!

    Hi,
I have an E61, so I can only guess, going from what works on my phone:
    - You have to set up Access_Points somewhere, right? You can then assign a default Access Point or you can set the phone to always prompt you which one to use. Setting your Wifi as default AP will work fine if you always connect to the same one if you do - it will still prompt you to choose one when that isn´t available.
    - There is a built-in WIFI tool. Assuming you have set it up to always prompt you for the AP to use, you can choose "Search for WIFI".
    - There are third-party apps you can install. I´m currently testing wefi, it´s working quite well. A few annoying things like it prompts you to set if you want it to start automatically when your phone (re-)starts and it somehow won´t take No for an answer, but you can then set an AP to "Automatic wefi" and it will connect to whatever open spot it can find.
IT will paint our future - either green or black

  • Why am I forced to use nokia messaging?

I wanted to use email on my nokia 5800 again but when I went to create a new mailbox in messaging I was forced to install nokia messaging and use that when I preferred the built in phone method. My main problem is that when I get a new email with nokia messaging it makes a noise but it doesn't put a notification on the top right of the main screen like the built in version of email does and a lot of the time I don't have the phone near me so this is very handy for quickly checking if I have new mail.
Is there any way to revert back to the old method of receiving email?
    Solved!

I don't know whether others have had success with it, i use the default e-mail client and i did this to work on my 5800. First uninstall NM and create a new mailbox phone will try to install NM hit "cancel" the installation stops and next screen would be of the of the default e-mail clent's one. Try more than once if it fails for the first time.

  • Why is it when I use WiFi I get better Youtube video quality than on 3G?

Topic. And does WiFi use up more juice than 3G then?

If you are connected to WiFi, no data will be transmitted over the 3G antenna. Leaving it on will consume a very small amount of additional power relative to turning it off (where it will default to the EDGE network). But, it's minimal additional drain. If you do get a call, 3G can be better (voice and data are carried on the same network), since 3G performs better at low signal strength because it uses signals from multiple towers simultaneously.
Personally, I leave 3G on all the time, and have no issues with battery life (I do recharge nightly).

  • Canada iPhone 3G, accessing data using WIFI

I am with Rogers (Canadian wireless provider). I was in the US this past week. I left the DATA ROAMING switch to OFF so I would not incur data roaming charges. Instead I wanted to access data using WIFI instead. I found free WIFI hotspots, was able to connect, however whenever I tried to access data it did not work. I went to an Apple Store in the States and they said the Data Roaming overrides all data access regardless if you trying to access data using WIFI or Cell towers. Can someone confirm this is true?

this same problem keeps happening to me.. im with telcel in mexico and everytime I go to the US I cannot access free wifi hotspots, it says something about enabling international data roaming. could it be a bug on the iphone set-up? how come not everyone has this problem?
im going to Europe soon and I would like to be able to check my emails at free hotspots, how can I fix this? my only thought is that with data roaming off the phone automatically doesnt let you join the wifi network or doesnt let u use it.
    any thoughts?

  • Is using wifi the same as verizon internet?

If i use wifi instead of internet provided by verizon will the billing still be the same?

What phone do you have?  If it is a smartphone and requires a data plan to be activated, then your billing will be $30 a month for the minimum 2 GB data plan, whether you sue wi-fi or not.  If you have wi-fi available, you can reduce the amount of data you are using, and depending on the phone you have, it will help keep your usage within your allowance.
My daughter has an iPhone, and uses it constantly here at home, on our wi-fi.  I know she uses it a lot when she's NOT at home as well, and her usage average 1 GB a month - it would likely be higher (and even over the 2 GB allowance) were it not for our home wi-fi.
On the other hand, I have a BlackBerry, and even without the wi-fi I use way less than 1 GB a month, less than 100 MB a month.  So it all depends on what you do and what type of phone you have. Using wi-fi will cut down the data used from Verizon's network, but it will not eliminate the need to have the required minimum data plan to activate the phone.

  • TS1398 After upgrade to iOS 6 i am not able to use wifi.

Connected, but no wifi traffic (at home).
After upgrade to iOS 6 i am not able to use wifi. I am connected to my home wifi but no trafic is coming through (safari, skype, twitter, app store). I have even tried recovery of my iPhone 4S using iTunes as well as using iPhone. But without effect.
Can not connect at all (at work).
    Thank you for helpfull advice.
    Vladimir
Please do not give me advice like:
    switch proxy to auto
turn the flight mode on and off
turn the iphone on and off
    release the ip
    recovery the network settings
    recovery firmware
I have tried all these, but did not work.
    PS to apple:
I really did not expect this kind of trouble. If I would want to waste my time "repairing my device", I would buy an android phone!!!!!!

This helped me solve the problem:
I have changed the security from TKIP to AES and now my wifi works fine /sofar/.

  • Why my ipad 4th gen doesnt update apps using wifi connection instead works on 3G?

MY ipad 4th gen is updating apps only using 3g connection whereas my wifi is working fine with chrome and other softwares, but it doesnt update softwares using wifi connection whic. Is unlimited data for me.

The WiFi only iPad does not have a GPS chip and does location through WiFi routers. Tethering to your iPhone will allow you to use the GPS chip on it and utilize Apple and Google Maps.
