Why I can't open iPhoto at all?

I don't know why but suddenly the iPhoto icon disappeared and trying to open the software a box says: You can't open the application "iPhoto.app" cause it may be damaged or incomplete (or something like this, I've just translated from the italian message I got in the box).
Any help please? I hope I haven't lost any picture

hey dude, thank you for the help here.
I have the same situation already a week and is making me crazy. I already deleted and reinstall the iPhoto. Then nothing changed. Then reinstalled the Yosemite...nothing changed.
That is the message I RECEIVED WHEN I FORCED TO QUIT THE IPHOTO:

  • I can not open iPhoto, are all my pictures lost?

I used iPhoto just yesturday, but today when I went to open it it would not open and instead showed a question mark where the application is in my dock. I am very worried that if I can not open iPhoto all of my pictures will be lost. My main concern is not necesarliy getting iPhoto to work but retreaving my pictures. They are very importnt to me.
Thanks to who ever can help

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • I can't update iPhoto, GarageBand nor iMovie, and I can't open iPhoto at all.

I can't update iPhoto, GarageBand nor iMovie, and iPhoto is the only one I can't open at all. I bought my Macbook half a year ago and when I try to update the Apps it says it's being modified and then that there was an error with Apple Store ):

There is an issue with update servers today, so you'll have to wait anyway.

  • Since the last update I can't open iPhoto at all.

Ever since I downloaded the new software update available I haven't been able to open my iPhoto at all. It looks like it's opening but then it says it's updating and will sit there for hours doing nothing at all. I'm a photographer and can't take the chance of losing what I have in there. Please help!

1 - the solution to not losing your photos is agood backup routine
2 - teh most likely solution to your current problem is to quite iPhoto (force quit if necessary) and Back up your iPhoto library, Depress the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • IPhoto updated but now I can't open iPhoto at all

iPhoto was installed on my MacBook Pro when I purchased it in Sept.(Along with iMovie, iTunes, etc.) I was having problems with editing some of the photos (it wouldn't open up in the edit screen) so I decided to update it. I downloaded the update and installed the "updater". Said the install was complete. However, now when I try to open iPhoto, it says "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." However, I can't find how to open the newer version. It installed it to the HD but it's not an executable file. It's just the update installer.
I am running the current version of OS. I am wondering how to get back to the original version of iPhoto that I had. Is this possible?

When you updated iPhoto what you downloaded was a bug fix patch for iPhoto 08. You cannot upgrade to a newer version (i.e. Iphoto 09) without purchasing the relevant iLife disk.
This is how you reconstruct a Library:
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • TS2383 What if doing all of this it still does not correct the problem?  Still tries to download again and stops at the same spot.  Can not open iPhotos at all now.

I have been trying to download the new Iphoto update but on step 5 0f 9 it hangs up at 97% and will go no further.  Can not see my picutres in IPhoto of even close this without going to Force Quit.  will not let me download any of my new photos from my camera.  I have tried all the instructions in TS2383 but does not work

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and start again.

  • Installed iLife 11 and can't open iPhoto

When I try to open iPhoto after installing iLife 11, I get the error that it cannot be opened because it is "damaged or is incomplete". What the???? I can't open iPhoto at all!

    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name. On 10.6 those receipts may be found in the Finder using the Go menu and selecting Go To Folder
    In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    3. Re-install.
I dont know where everything is on the mac. also if i do this to resolve the iphoto problem will it remove all my pictures i had in there before?

  • I can not open iphoto and itune anymore

anyone knows why i can not open iphoto and itune anymore/

I have rerun the applications install dvd, but it has not corrected the fault. When I try to open iphoto's I have an error message that says You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
    Peter,
the version you installed from the DVD is probably older than the version you used last with your library, so you need to update to the last version you used.
I have tried to update to the latest iphoto 11 but it wont download. Any answers please.
Where are you trying to download from? When you upgrade a version that is installed from the DVD, you need to update from the Software Update menu entry in the Apple-menu.
Also, iPhoto has to be called simply "iPhoto", not iPhoto '11 or something similar and to be installed in the Applications folder. Otherwise it will not be recognised by the updater.

I've just installed Maverick and now can't open iphoto. I have 9.2.1 currently installed. Please help - am terrified I've lost my photos as they weren't all backed up.

    Pogs78,
first things first — buy an external drive to use as a Time Machine backup destination and make a back up. That way, you won’t lose anything which is currently on your MacBook Pro.

-1.The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.

  • I can not open iphoto on my imac..  somebody knows why?

I have iphoto on my imac, but i cna`t use it anymore.. i can not open iphoto and i don`t know what happened?? Somebody  know something about this problem?

With the lack of information this is only a guess: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Downgraded OS from Mavericks and now can't open iPhoto library.

Updated to Mavericks which made my machine unusable. Consequently reinstalled 10.8.5, and now I can't open iPhoto Library without updating to Mavericks again and installing latest version of iPhoto. Any ideas how to make my iPhoto library compatible with iPhoto 7.1.5?

If it were me, I would be addressing why Mavericks did not seem to work.
Your machine easliy meets the minimum system requirements to run Mavericks and simply buying more RAM is not a valid fix for your reported issue.
If you are really determined to stay on Mountain Lion but now have an incompatible iPhoto library you could try a workaround -
    - Right click on the iPhoto Library, choose Show package contents, look for a "Masters" folder. All your original pics are located within this folder.
    - Hold down the alt key, whilst doing this, click the iPhoto icon on your dock and choose to create new to create a new "empty" iPhoto library
    - Go back to your Masters Folder and Drag individual folders accross into the already open iPhoto to import them. Each folder you drag in will be treated as an "event"
Having said all this, I would really be trying to upgrade to Mavericks again first before trying a "messy" workaround.
Why not let us know what happened after you upgraded before trying this?

  • I don't know what has happened but I can't open iPhoto. When I try to open it I receive a caution "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." How do I solve this??!!

I don't know what has happened but I now can't open iphoto. I get a caution when I try which says the iphoto library is locked! It was working perfectly fine this afternoon until I tried to upload some photos from my camera and my computer started to run very slow and wasn't recognising my camera. I tried to quit iphoto and then when I came back in to it, this was the message I received. As far as I am aware I didn't alter any settings or put on any locks. Please help!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
