No. No. And No.
You can 'ping' your phone and have it play a sound (even if it's muted) from the watch, but it must be in range... That's intended to help you locate it if it's nearby but you forgot where you put it, or it slipped behind a couch cushion or something.

Using Find My iPhone with Snow Leopard and iPhone 4S

I just upgraded my family's three iPhones from 3GS to 4S. I have a family MobileMe account and would like to continue to use Find My iPhone. I cannot upgrade my OSX on my Macbook Pro past Snow Leopard without rendering a professional app that I use for my business unusable. Is there a way to make this work with the new phones without upgrading to Lion / enabling iCloud? That is unfortunately not an option for me until the pro software app is made Lion compatible. I suppose you could set up a dual-boot environment and keep Snow Leopard in a small partition to run your business software. Clone your Snow Leopard partition into a second partition (with SuperDuper or similar) and upgrade this partion to Lion. Then remove unnecessary applications from the Snow Leopard partition and resize it to save space.

I have an iPhone and iPad. I use find my iPhone for both. If I use the same icloud account for both, how do I separate them on the map, or if I lose one and want to remote wipe the lost one but not the one in my possession?

If the "Find My iPhone" was enabled in your iCloud Settings on your phone - it does not matter if you had the "App" on there or not. It will report, if it has not been deleted / restored / etc.
Have you tried logging into http://www.icloud.com and see if your device is listed? If it is, then place your phone into "Lost Mode" and put a phone number where you can be reached.

so, I have an iPhone 4S with ios 7. Very nice. I also have find my Iphone installed, and iCloud enabled. All well. So I lost my iPhone 4S, thought to track it down with find my iPhone as I could still call my iPhone. My girl friend uses my old iPhone 3GS, so I thought just get "find my iPhone" on here phone, and track my 4S. Well, nice try, but doesn't work. It requires iOs 7!!! So I couldnt track my iPhone. Than I tried to use a friends iPhone 4, but he didnt have iOs 7 installed as well. I tried using icloud.com on Safari, it tells me to install the app............
Why can't I install an app, which used to work on a 3GS anymore? I would guess that most people keep their old iPhones, and use it when the new iPhone was lost or stolen. Big surprise that it doesnt work.

I do understand the backwards compatibility argument only partly. If I had an iPhone 3GS with Find my Iphone installed ages ago, I would be able to track my iPhone even with an old iPhone. I do understand that new Versions of an App can not support als iOS, but they could keep old Versions for old iOS devices. It is bad enough that the 3GS is not supported anymore with iOS, now all the apps start to not work anymore.
There are other apps with offer that, a warning messages comes up that the latest for the iOS supported Version will be installed, but it is not the latest overall Version. I am happy with that, but apple doesnt seem to do it for their own, very usefull apps, which a very unusefull for me now.

Why should I NOT use Finder to remove old TM backups?

I have a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks, and my old Macbook was backed up to an external hard drive using Time Machine.
I want to create some space on the external drive, but I don't want to delete all of my prior backups, in case I find out later that something I migrated to the new machine is corrupted or broken. I understand you can delete old backups using either TM or Finder (or Terminal, but I don't feel comfortable with that), but many posts I've read warn against deleting old backups using Finder; is this a bad idea, and if so, why?
Also, I know that TM creates hard links to files that are in previous backups, rather than actually making multiple copies of the same folder. Are the actual files stored in the backups.backupdb folder, or in a different location?

Time machine is an incremental backup - if you back up everything you can restore your hard drive to a point in the past - hourly - last 24 hours - end of day - last month - end of week until Time machine starts consolidating for room.
Time machine does an initial full backup - all other backups are files that changed only. You will get large backups if you rebuild IPHOTO library as that entire library will be backed up rather than only that which changed.
Cleanup is the point where daily is merged into weekly (most recent in the time frame is kept) and hourly is merged into a daily so you may see GB used on your time machine drive decrease or fluctuate around a point for a period of time.
Also means you can restore folder, items, and at least in snow leopard - if you want one IPHOTO picture - simple open IPHOTO - then go into time machine and you can get it.
In Yosemite - time machine if active will keep missed backups on your hard drive until you connect the TM drive (that is new for lap tops I guess)
Desktop I keep time machine connected and the hourly backups and cleanups don't cause any problems.
If a file does not change there may be only one backup on the TM drive.
If you want to keep a backup of something you downloaded - but want to delete it off your hard drive - back it up to a separate device - as time machine will eventually remove it from TM.
If you want to delete something on time machine that you no longer want user enter time machine - does prompt you if you want to remove all instances of the item. Doing it that way will keep the chain clean.
