  • My music is backed up on external drive when i disconnect the external drive itunes cannot locate the files on the PC harddrive and none of the music can be accessed how do i fix this?

My harddrive was wiped clean.  I upgraded operating system to fr vista to win 7.  All music was saved on an external hard drive and i have copied this to itunes on new operating system but itunes can not access any of the music without the external drive being connected.  error msg says original files cannot be located.  What to do?

It all depends a bit on how & what you backed up, and how you restored it. Select an affected track. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Click Cancel when asked to locate the file. Look at the location given on the summary tab. Now look through your computer for file in question. What are the two paths? iTunes could be using the wrong layout (pre or post iTunes 9) in error. Or your library could have been split on the previous system, and not restored to preciesly the same path. Posting back the two paths should make things clearer.

  • Why won't photos from external drive stay on my computer (iPhoto) once I disconnect the external drive?

I'm trying to move photos from my external drive to my new computer.  When I connect the external drive, I'm able to view all the photos in iPhoto, and I'm able to drag photos to a desktop folder and/or directly into iPhoto.  But, when I disconnect the external drive, I no longer have access to the photos on my computer.  I'm sure there's a step I may be overlooking but I'm using the same process I've used in the past and cannot determine next steps.

    Thanks so far.
    I'm currently working on a 2012 MacBook Air 13", running OSX 10.8.
Upon opening my external drive, I've dragged the iPhoto Library to my computer's desktop.  When I've opened iPhoto and tried to import the library (from external drive and/or from the desktop), I'm unable to do so, i.e., the library is not highlighted (it won't allow me to click on it).
I can open and view the library from my external drive in iPhoto when the external drive is connected to the computer.  But, once the external drive is disconnected from the computer, I'm unable to view the library
I've tried all of the aforementioned when the "Copy Imported Item(s) to the iPhoto Library" is checked.

The "Copy on Import" button is greyed out. How can I enable it so I can disconnect the external drive?.

"Copy" is normally used when connecting a camera or card reader.
Simply copy or move folders from your external drive to your computer hard drive, then from the Organizer menu click:
File >> Get Photos & Videos >> From Files & Folders
Then navigate to the new location on your internal hard drive.

  • Oops, I disconnected an external drive and now I can't backup.

I am backing up to an external firewire disk. I accidentally disconnected the external drive. I re-connected it and only two of my three partitions are visible now. I ran disk utility and repaired the disk with no errors. When I go to the finder only two of the three partitions can be seen.
When I backed up with time machine it said that it needs 13.97 GB but only 4.43 GB are available. I cleaned up the external drive but I get the same error. I went to /Volumes/Time Machine (my backup partition) and the files I had deleted were no longer there.
Any body have an idea of what is going on here?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
How did you do that? Did you delete TM backup files via the Finder? That's likely to be a large problem. Unfortunately Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks not to do that, other than using special "deny everybody everything" permissions. Do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it again. That may not gain any space, but if DU can repair them successfully, you may be able to continue using them.
If Disk Utility sees it, but the Finder doesn't, it may just be that you need to reset your Finder preferences. From a Finder window's menubar, select Preferences then either General or Sidebar as appropriate, un-check the box for +External Disks,+ then check it again.
If you get the TM drive repaired, and still have the problem, post back. Include the size of the data on your internal HD, the capacity of your TM drive, and whether there's anything else on it besides TM backups. Also Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post them here.

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

I have lost my Safari app and all the bookmarks that go with it. I have tried to download my back-up on external drive but cannot access it. Tried a start with C key held down but still no access to the back up app.
Have used Superduper app. to back up and checked back-up occasionally to see if all files present  and appeared OK.
I had previously started machine using original CD #1 to try and replace Eudora which was acting up. Did not knowingly touch Safari.
    Running iMAC System 10.4.11
How can I successfully download from the Maxtor back-up?
    Ivan

    Further info.
I checked the content of my other back-up and found the bookmark Bookmarks.plist in the library under Safari
Dumped the existing copy in the computer and drag-dropped the back up. All bookmarks restored.
Solved the Stickies problem by using Spotlight  to find file "stickiesdatabase" and did a drag- drop to replace file. All data restored.
Re Ical data loss. Used Spotlight to find iCal document in  Library - Preferences where I found com.apple.iCal.plist in folder.
Got ready to make change but did not immediately remove file. When I returned to Preferences folder to grab above document,
the readable descriptors had been changed to code consisting of some upper case letters and/or single symbols!
So now I cannot tell which is the symbol  iCal.plist
Thanks for leading me so far, but how do I find that plist for my calendar?

Hi Niel.  Can you be move specific for those of us not tech savy?   1 - Can you provide steps to back up the library?  2 - How do you organize the library?  3 - When you move the entire iTunes folder, does it include iTunes paid for music along with downloaded music from CDs?  Thanks

I had my itunes library on an external drive, I now have a new Windows 7 computer. How can I access my library?

    Hello, robertfromboulder city.
Thank you for the question.  You can direct iTunes to read your media off your external drive.  To do this, follow the instructions below.  See the section in the first article labeled Discovering and changing the iTunes Media folder location.

  • Why is it impossible to import pics into existing projects in Aperture 3.6 ? It forces me to create a new project on every import. Tried to change that in preferences but no luck.

Why is it impossible to import pics into existing projects in Aperture 3.6 ? It forces me to create a new project on every import.
Tried to change that in preferences but no luck.

It is working for me.  Two ways to import into an existing project:
Select a project and view it in the browser in split view. If you drag image files from a folder directly into the filmstrip, the dragged image files will be added to that project.
Or select a project in the library, before you open the Import panel. Then you can switch the destination project in the Import Settings  from "new Project" to the selected project.
Have you tried these methods? Where does it not work for you?

  • I hooked an external hard drive into the '09 macbook, but when it's in the usb, it has a pop up that says the disk cannot be read, then brings me to disk utility. I have no idea why it wont read the external drive, as it has worked properly before.

I have an external drive with old music files (about 127GB worth) and I was hoping to put them onto my laptop. I hook it into the USB port, and it pops up an error message saying the Disk cannot be read. This is strange, because the drive was hooked up before and worked perfectly fine. It sends me to Disk Utility and says that It must be repaired, but when I click repair, it wants me to back up anything I can (which I cannot at all, none of the files are on right now) and erase it and repair. I have no idead why it's doing this, any help?

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • HT1751 I cannot seem to get through this process.  I believe I have copied the library from my old to the external drive, and then to my newer MacBook Pro; but the result is the same number of songs that were originally transferred via the transfer proces

I've tried for a few days to figure out why I cannot be sure that my iTunes back-up to an external drive has "worked" or not.  I finally decided to try to transfer the content from the external drive to my newer MacBook Pro.  I already knew that the number of songs on the newer laptop were fewer than what are on my older one.  (I basically only use my older MacBook Pro now for iTunes.)  But today, still had not luck.  There is still a difference of over 100 songs appearing on the iTunes of the newer laptop than are on the older one.
I'm pretty sure that I just don't undertand the Apple article very well:  "ITunes: back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive."
This would not be so frustrating for me did I not have over 3000 songs, imported from CDs that I myself own, in my old laptop.  The thought of redoing this import is, well, tiring to say the least.

Go through the below forum with similar issue and follow the process mentioned by "Macjack" in the beginning.

  • Booting from an external drive 10.3.2 with new i7 mac mini

How to boot from an external drive with 10.3.2 using a new i7 mac mini. Seems to be a build problem?

Your Mac is incapable of running 10.3.2. The version of OS X 10.3 is PowerPC only and your Mac has an Intel processor.
Why do you want to do that?

  • Using the same external drive with Time Machine on new mac?

I recently got a new mac because my old one broke. Thankfully, I had a fresh backup on Time Machine ready to restore onto my new computer. But when I try to use Time Machine with my new computer, it keeps wanting to do a whole new backup. It won't recognize the latest backup to only add new or changed files.
Here's a breakdown of my events:
    new computer
restore Time Machine on new computer at install
want to continue using the external drive with Time Machine from where I left off (only adding new files since the last backup) on my new computer
Time Machine wants to do a whole new backup
Question: How can I continue to use my existing external hard drive with Time Machine on my new computer, picking up where I left off (not a new, complete backup)?
My old computer was Snow Lepoard, my new one is Lion.

    Bergers wrote:

That should have left a "trail" in your SystemMigration log, so Time Machine can figure out what happened and automatically "inherit" the old backups.  But sometimes, obviously, that doesn't work.
Since it didn't, there's a chance you can do it manually.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Library on External Drive - Setting up on a New Computer

This is the second time I've done this and the first time was a disaster, despite reading and reading on this topic.
I had a desktop. I kept all my music on an external hard drive, including the library. The path my iTunes was setup to use was E:\iTunes\iTunes Music. No problem.
Now I have a new laptop. I installed iTunes, plugged in the external drive, and changed the directory in my preferences to the same one as the previous computer.
What do I do next to get my library, which already exists in E:\iTunes, to be recognized by iTunes? I don't want to copy any music to the computer, I just want it to find the library on the external drive and use it as it is. It's very well organized, including playlists and smart playlists, and I don't want to lose it.
Anybody have a suggestion on the best way to make this work smoothly? Last time I tried this I ended up with a duplicate of each song in the library, and a bunch of half-full playlists. Took me forever to correct this.\
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Steve,
This should be relatively easy as long as you duplicate the paths from the old PC with the new PC.
If the music folders (Artist & Album) on ExHD were in the 'E:\iTunes\iTunes Music' path, then make sure that the new Laptop sees the ExHD as the
    i exact same
    path to the music. Just
    i 'E:\iTunes\Artist\Album'
will not work, it will need to be
    i 'E:\iTunes\iTunes Music\Artist\Album'
Once that is set up, with iTunes closed, make a copy of the old Laptop's 'iTunes Library.itl' file and replace the file of the same name in the new Laptop (usually in the '\My Music\iTunes' folder). This ITL file keeps all the absolute locations for your song files, as well as all the music meta-data.
Once you open the new Laptop's iTunes, you should see the exact same Library as before - no need to 'Add', 'Import' or perform any other process.
Post back if you have questions.
