Why iMac goes into coma booted in Ext HD Tiger hot plugging USB cable?

Folks:
Had this question posted as "iMac goes into deep coma w/hot plugging USB cable??" on the "using your iMac G4" forum, got 63 views but have not received any replies there. Since I was booted up in Tiger 4.11 on my FW Ext HD, thought I'd try to post over here to see if I get some sage advice from this forum.
Was trying to experiment with ways to get my scanner to work if I finally decide to upgrade my iMac to 10.4.11 by booting up Tiger using External HD by firewire and then plugging in the scanner after that. As soon as the USB plug touched the port the computer "went black"--total crash. Took about 5 mins before I was able to resuscitate the machine with the power button. I repeated my experiment in the same manner and down she went again, down and out . . . . Tried to start it for a few minutes, nothing, went to dinner, came back, nothing. Finally, unplugged it for a minute and then she came back to the land of the living . . . .
When I restarted from the 10.1.5 internal HD I plugged the scanner in and opened the scanner app in Classic and all was fine. I like being able to use Classic apps and if it wasn't for the fact that my Camino browser is starting to crash when browsing the newer websites I'd have no reason to upgrade. Even if I get a new Intel computer I won't be able to boot back into the Power PC operating systems, right?
Anyway, would like to know if it is "well known" that you can't hot plug peripherals when booted up in external HD or if this is a "special problem" that only I am experiencing?
Thanks,
e.e.p.

Since the issue could be in the peripherals or the computer involved, this could
be a hardware failure of some kind. If you have replaced the USB cable, and all
other variables have been double or triple-checked, even a problem with the
computer's power supply could be at fault. Or there may be a partial short in one
of the electrical circuits involved with this USB cable and whatever it supports.
Please re-explain these other operating systems and their locations, since the
10.1.5 and other stuff seems irrelevant. Unless there is a hardware failure.
And that is a possibility.
If you got an old early model Intel mac with 10.4.11 running in it, that would not
support Classic OS9 based apps directly. However, there are several sources
for replacement parts and also complete repaired and guaranteed PPC Macs.
There are limits in some, in what OS X versions and practical uses they may
allow now, with less online support & dwindling apps to run on the older OS X.
You may be able to look into the system logs and crash reports, via Console
Utility, to see what kinds of errors reports & crash logs the computer created.
Also, in System Profiler, there should be a Software> Logs section and it may
have some recent activity logs there. You can compare log creation times with
the intervals of these failures and see if a report matches your experience in
a real-time error log or other.
Is this USB port where the failure occurs, located in the external drive enclosure
or in the computer attached to it? What kinds of external FireWire devices and
USB devices are involved? Have you ran just the bare-bones computer & seen if
there are problems in just that, by itself? Troubleshooting invites checking it alone.
If there is an overload of some kind regarding a power supply failure under
only some circumstances, you could try a powered USB hub when using
several items attached to the computer; so it would carry that load.
Anyway, it sounds like a magical mystery tour is in store, in there.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • My iMac goes into sleep mode, won't come out until I unplug and replug the computer then hit the power button. Just hitting the power button alone won't restart the iMac.

My Imac goes into sleep mode but won't come out.  The keyboard/mouse won't rouse it and the power button won't do it either.  I have to unplug the computer, re-plug it in and then hit the power button.  Help?

I looked around the internet and found an old post that seems to have solved the problem.  I had a relatively new USB port (powered) that I unplugged and, ta da, the problem disappeared.  I'm not sure why this happens (I'm not a tech person) but it seems like this should have been worked out in testing somewhere.

  • My iMac goes into a deep sleep and can not be woken up; it needs to be shut down and restarted.

My Intel iMac goes into a deep sleep and can not be awakened; I need to hold the start button in to force it to shut down and then restart it.
    What might be wrong?

Try a very quick momentary press of the power button.

  • Mountain Lion going into safe boot

Hi, I downloaded mountain lion and it started intstalling. When it restarted to install the upgrade, it starts in safe mode..i tried shutting down and restarting few times but every time it starts installing the updates and then goes into safe boot mode..
Note: yesterday I got a problem with my key board, there was a spill into my mbp keyboard and most of the keys are not working. Right now i am using my Bluetooth keyboard now.
Pls let me know how to fix this safe boot issue with the installation.

A problem with a keyboard will cause your Mac to startup in Safe Mode.
If you can, use a USB keyboard instead of Bluetooth.

  • 24" imac goes into sleep mode and lights on circuit flicker

    Hi -
I have a 24" imac and have found that when the display goes into sleep mode the lights on the circuit flicker.
I have searched the web and other users have complained of the same issue with no resolution.
Here is a similiar post - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2606099?start=0&tstart=0.      The resolution is probably you need to get the iMac serviced,  what i'm wondering is what is the problem in the imac that is causing the issue.    Is this a defect?
Before anyone questions the circuitry in my house here is what I have verified.
An electrician has come and verified the electric panel is good and all circuit breakers are good.   All circuits in my house are copper, no aluminum.
I can plug the iMac into any circuit and the problem starts right when the Imac's display goes to sleep.     I have owned the iMac for approximately 5 months now (bought it used) and the problem started about a month ago.
Assuming this has to be serviced I dread to wonder the price .
      Thanks for anyones help.

The sleep timeout has nothing to do with disk activity. It's based on user input, although some background processes can pre-empt it. If you don't want the machine to sleep automatically, disable automatic sleep in the Energy Saver preference pane.

  • IMac goes into sleep, can't turn back on...

A new problem has risen...iMac will randomly go into an unwakeable display sleep and the only way to turn it back on is by pressing the power button and either shutting it down or putting the computer (not the display) into sleep. A non-threatening problem, but it proves itself to be quite annoying.
I have looked in System Preferences and made sure to check that the computer will 'never' go to sleep, both the display and computer sleep, and that bluetooth devices will wake the computer (just in case it goes into sleep), but it still continues to carry on it's uncalled sleeping. Any suggestions? All comments are welcome, and many thanks.

    HI,
Install the 10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
It's ok to do that even if you are already running 10.5.8. If that doesn't help ...
    Try resetting the SMC.

  • Macbook goes into coma after battery drained

After going to sleep and closing my MBP lid last night which had very little power left I was expecting it to have completely drained when I opened it this morning. However, when I opened the lid (and connected the power) and tried to press the power button on nothing happend, tried different keyboard combinations with no luck aswell. The machine had completely died and there was no power to it. Taking the battery out etc didn't help either. I thought the macbook had just become an expensive paperweight. But... 20mins or so later is mysteriously powered back on restoring the session. I have repeated this again by draining the power and it does it each time, sometimes restoring the session a bit fast from 5mins to 25mins. Any ideas what is going on here?

This often happens. After a complete discharge of a battery you need to let the battery get some charge before the system will let you boot.
The reason is simple, the MBP on maximum load actually tops its power requirements from the battery. While it is very small and momentary it does happen. If it's fully discharges your MBP can't do this. And, one of the times your MBP is under heavily load is at boot time which is why it won't boot without a battery.

  • When are imacs going to come with usb3

I am waiting to purchase a new iMac but would like it to have usb3 on board. Is this in the works, and if so, when will it happen?

As all we know, Apple depends on Intel to implementing this new technology on its chipsets. The new Ivy Bridge will include USB3, but until then i think they'll stick with the regular USB2 becouse otherwise they will need to add a third party controller. So taking in account that Aplle/Intel are a partnership i really doubt they are adding a new conroller to their motherboard designs.

  • HT201240 Macbook goes into "Safe Boot" mode when I start it but it will not accept my password to complete the boot.

When I start my Macbook it tries to start in Safe Boot mode and it will not accept my password.  I have tried to reset the password by inserting the "Mac OS X Install" disk and restarting while pressing C but that process has no effect.  The same Safe Boot screen appears and again it will not accept my password.
I am not sure what version of MacOS X I have as the disk is now in the machine and it will not eject.
    Any suggestions?

You can eject the disc by depressing the track pad/mouse at startup.
Are you depressing the Shift key at startup to make the Mac boot in Safe Mode?
Here's the instructions if you have the discs.

  • IMac goes into sleep mode although hard disk is active

    Hello,
my Mac has a large task to do - it should rebuild a corrupted iPhoto library which takes a long time.
So I though I leave my iMac running in the night and after it's finished it will activate sleep mode (which is set to 1 hour of inactivity).
However when I leave my Mac it activates sleep mode (after that 1 hour) while the task is still running.
I thought when there's write activity on the hard disk, the sleep mode won't be activated...
What am I thinking wrong or is there a wrong setting?
I'm using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the iPhoto database which has no option to sleep after the task is done so here won't be a chance to do that.
    Thanks!
    Markus

The sleep timeout has nothing to do with disk activity. It's based on user input, although some background processes can pre-empt it. If you don't want the machine to sleep automatically, disable automatic sleep in the Energy Saver preference pane.

  • IMac goes into iPhoto Slide Show and won't exit unless shut down.

When I am in iPhoto it will sometimes (no patter) slip into slide show mode with music without my having done anything.  It will play the slide show over and over and not let me exit unless I shut down.  I made a slide show with music when I first got my computer and the slide show always plays this music (R.E.M. "Everybody Hurts"-no jokes please!), but the images can be of any photos I have on the computer. Last time it happened with my Last Import.  Please help as the folks at Apples could only shrug their shoulders and tell me "Wow, never heard that before."

Take a look at these slide show control keys did you try these, also click on the settings icon in the lower right corner of the slide show and make sure the repeat slide show check box is unchecked. (This applies to iPhoto 11)
    Slideshows
    Stop a slideshow
Press the Escape (esc) key, or move the mouse to show the slideshow controls, and then click the close button (X)
    Pause slideshow or resume playing
    Space bar
    Move through a slideshow manually
Press the Right Arrow or Left Arrow key

  • I phone 4s goes into continual boot after 8.1 update

I am wondering if I am the only one having this problem. I have a 4s that I would like to keep running at least till my 6+ shows up. Ever sense  I update to 8.0 I lost the panorama feature, and now that I have upgraded to 8.1 my phone continue to reset over and over again. I was able to remote wipe the phone as I have find my I phone and restore from back up. Things went well till my apps auto updated right as the restore was finishing. Now after 20 min of the loop it just now popped back to normal. This is not an old phone I replaced it through apple in May. Out of warranty replacement. This is crazy and I don't think it is just my phone I had to restore my wife's 4s after the 8.1 update also. She chose to leave all the apps off just to make sure she had a phone, and to set up her 6+ off of my now questionable back up.

    Hi!!!
I believe I didn't understand your issue. Have your iphone been stuck in bootloop. If so, have you managed to restore it??
I'm asking this because my iphone 4s is having the same problem. I had the IOS 8.0.1 installed and for no apparent reason it entered in a bootloop state. I'm trying to restore it to the newest iOS but iTunes always returns error 9.
After reading other iPhone users and Apple experts, I believe that this is concerned with hardware malfuncion and not what they say about this particular error. Moreover, most of the cases seems to be with iPhone 4S using some ioS 8 version. Strange...

  • Why my ipod will switch on automatically when connected to pc through usb cable?

can anyone tell what i can do to stop my ipod from switching on automatically whenever it is connected to my pc through usb cable? .. thanks

What do you mean it swithes on. Thats because its charging.
Now if your talking about it opening itunes, thats fixable. Just let it open up itunes & go to ur device & scroll down on summary until you see a box to select saying "automatically open itunes when this device is connect" make sure the little box isnt checked.
