Why is 20 megapixel photo over 2x longer than 12mp one when viewed at 100% in Preview?

I  shot 2  "identical"  photos with my Compact (12mp) and SLR (20mp) cameras. (They show virtually the same image)
I then opened them in Preview and hit the "Display at Actual Size (100%)" button expecting the 20mp  shot to be around 65% larger in width and height.
To my surprise, it was more than double the length and width.
Can anyone explain why,  as even  a doubling of the megapixels should only result in a roughly 50% increase in length and width?
The camera sensors are different of course, the compact camera's being tiny compared to the APS-C of the SLR but I would have thought that didn't matter as the pixel sizes of the 2 images are 4,000 x 3,000  and  5,456 x 3,632  .  .  .  .  a linear increase of well under 50%

Yet another of a long line of cockups on my part.
I have just discovered that when I was testing the cameras yesterday, I must have inadvertently altered the image size in the menu of the compact camera.
As a result I was shooting at 5 megapixels and not the 12 megapixels that I always shoot.
This explains the size discrepancy perfectly.

  • Why won't some photos or videos sync to my iPad when they work fine with iPhoto and iTunes?

Why won't some photos or videos sync to my iPad when they work fine with iPhoto and iTunes? Other photos taken with same camera sync fine from iPhoto while certain events are inexplicably incompatible. I've recently foundvthecsame occurrence with certain mp3s and videos from iTunes.

For photos try deleting the photo cache from your computer and then re-try the photo sync and see if they then copy over - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314
Not all video formats that work in iTunes are compatible with the iPad - the supported formats are (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) :
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Have you tried Advanced > Create iPad Version and then sync those versions to the iPad
The iPad's supported audio formats are :
HE-AAC (V1 and V2), AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

I went to back up my iPhone4 and it said there was an update.  So I clicked  on 'update and backup' (or something close to that.)  It took FOREVER...way longer than usual. When it was done, it showed the power cord w/an arrow to iTunes.  ***???  I restarted my computer and tried the whole process again and still...the power cord with an arrow to iTunes.  And I know this means I have to go to Apple and get another phone and will lose anything that wasn't backed up. Anyone else have this happen or have a solution so I don't have to do a restore???

    Reboot your computer.
    Disable your antivirus and firewall.
Connect the phone to a USB port directly on your computer, not to a hub. If your computer is not a laptop and has ports on both front and back use a port on the back.
If iTunes does not recognize the phone when you connect it see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If it STILL doesn't work open a command window and type:
       netsh winsock reset
Then try again. (It seems that a recent Microsoft Windows update may have corrupted network settings; this restores them to the factory default).
BTW, was there an error number associated with the failed update?

  • Why is my shared photo album no longer there?

I created a shared photo stream with some friends and added about 14 pictures to it. That was yesterday and now I go to the shared tab on my photos and all my other created shared photo streams are there but not one particular one. Has this happened to anyone else? How can I get it back?

Ooooookay, now it is there. Basically it disappeared for a while and then reappeared. Why did it do that?

  • Find pictures at Photo Stream, for longer than 30 days ago?

The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days.
Do you have iCloud & Photo Stream set up on your computer?
    Otherwise, no.

  • Photos in 9.2 do not appear when viewed through screen sharing

I recently upgraded my Mac Mini, which stores my master iPhoto library, to iPhoto 9.2.  Because this Mac Mini is also used as a media server for an AppleTV, I almost always operate the computer through screen sharing using a MacBook Pro, rather than connecting it to a television. Both computers are running OS 10.6.8.
Since upgrading this setup to iPhoto 9.2, I can no longer view photos in my iPhoto library through screen sharing. Previously, I had noticed that I could not view certain other things through screen sharing (such as watching DVD's).  For example, I couldn't view individual photos in detail in iPhoto, but I could view them in grid view. Now I cannot even view them in grid view anymore.
Is there a graphics library that is not compatible with screen sharing that is now being completely used by iPhoto?  Is there a setting that I can check?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Michael.
I will give it a try.

First you should update to the latest version of Acrobat 8, since you say
you are running Acrobat 8, you should update to 8.2.5. Update your
FrameMaker to 7.2p158. Those two steps might do the trick. If that fails
try using a different settings file. Perhaps High Quality or Press
Quality. I would never use Standard for anything where fidelity is

  • Why does deleting a photo take so long?

Every time I delete a photo, Aperture stops, the pointer turns into a beach ball and about 5-10 seconds later, the single picture is deleted. Why is this happening? It's really tedious when you are trying to delete a number of pictures.

    Rick Lang wrote:
I do believe Apple strongly recommends your Aperture Library be on an internal drive. Physically it will run on an external drive but it is not recommended. You may have some other large files that could be relocated to an external drive so you can put Aperture on the internal drive.
Aperture 3 is adept at handling multiple Aperture Libraries so you might consider breaking up your large library into a few smaller libraries. Perhaps one library per calendar year?
Within the running Aperture 3 program you can easily switch between multiple libraries but the libraries you are using most (such as your "Aperture 2010 Library" for example) should be on an internal drive. I suspect Aperture 3 is doing more behind-the-scenes work than iPhoto and that will make a difference in performance especially if the libraries are external.
    Your thoughts?
Thanks for your comments. Seems to me that I should be able to store the library externally, but I called Apple to ask. They said you can, but that USB is not recommended, so I am going to try using my firewire drive instead and see if that helps. Also think I may try splitting my library into two parts. I understand that it's easy to switch to the other and that can help performance, but Apple felt strongly that the firewire was a much better option. Didn't think it mattered for pictures, but I guess it does.
Using the internal is really not that easy. Don't know where all the space goes, but my documents and pictures only account for about 16gb. Apps take 15gb. Music 30gb. That's 61gb out of 320gb, but I only have 87gb available. Where does it go???
    I will report back...

  • Why is my exported file 2 seconds longer than the project in my timeline

I am using a Mac, latest OSX. I need my project to run at exactly 30minutes. In the timeline my project is marked at exactly 30 minutes from the in/out points. When I export the media with Premier Pro I end up with a final product which is 30 minutes and 2 seconds long. Where are these two extra seconds coming from? I had my source range set for Sequence in/out points and this read as 30 miutes exactly, and the predicted output time for the final export read as 30 minutes exactly as well. This still added two extra seconds so I then set the source range to custom and typed in 30minutes exactly and it is STILL giving me 2 extra seconds. What is going on here?
Export settings summary reads as follows
    1920x1080 (1.0)
    23.976 fps
    Progressive
    00:30:00:00
    VBR
    1 pass
    Target 0.19 Mbps
    Max 0.19 Mbps
    AAC
    320 kbps
    48 kHz
    Stereo

Because within Premiere Pro, your are reading the total running time based on Non-drop frame timecode.
Depending on which version of Quicktime you are using you can click on the counter and change the value of the numbers displayed:
where Standard is real time. If you switch it Non Drop, you'll see it will display the length (incorrectly) as 30 minutes.
If you are using Quicktime 10 I believe you can only display real time.
This is all because your video is running at 23.976 frames per second. That means it is running slightly slower than real time, which would be true 24fps. Over the period of 30 minutes, this slow frame playback is making the show run longer by two seconds.
This why in NTSC 29.97 and 59.94 video there is drop and non-drop timecode. Drop frame timecode drops timecode numbers over time to compensate for the difference that the video rate is slightly slower than real time.
In drop frame, when you have a duration of 30 minutes, it coresponds to real time 30 minutes.
In non-drop timecode, when you have a duration indicating  30 minutes  it will actually take slightly longer to playout.
There is not a standard for 24fps drop frame timecode, it is always non-drop. You can't switch to drop frame timecode if your sequence frame rate is 23.976 or 24fps.
    The math:
If you had 30 minutes of footage running at 24 fps - 24fps X 60 = 1440 frames in a minute, 1440 x 30 = 43200 frames in the show. (So non-drop TC, which counts the frames without regard to the true playback rate, displays a duration of 30 minutes)
But since the video, is, in fact, running slightly slower, at 23.976, those 43200 frames take longer to play out by .024 frame per second of real time.  So 43200  (your total show amount of frames) divided by 23.976 (the playout per second frame rate) = 1801.801802 seconds, which is 30 minutes, 1.8 seconds.
Avid used to ( and maybe still does) come with a calculator to make this conversion and to help make the frame count = the desired running time.
It should be noted that within commercial production, with durations of 30 or 60 seconds, this whole mess is less apparent. It only shows up when you work with program length material. This is why they invented drop frame timecode.
A solution is to tighten up the edit by 1.8 seconds over 30 minutes

  • Why do my old photos come up rotated and severely pixilated when I click on them?

My photos from albums in years gone by look fine in the thumbnails. But when I click on them, they appear large on the screen, become instantly more fuzzy, and rotate 90 degrees to the right. When I click to rotate them back, the other distortions remain, and in some cases, serve to crop the photo! This is really, really bad. I've already seemingly ruined cherished pictures from 2009 and 2010 when my kids were younger. Please help! Thank you.

The thumbnails are fine. The problems start when I click on the thumbnails to view the photos. See my long comment above. Thank you.
I meant the mismatch between thumbnails and photos, sorry. In addition to broken rotation tags, that Winston Churchill pointed out, the database entries with the applied adjustments may have become corrupted. Repairing the database will at least ensure, that the database entries are correct.
Are you shooting RAW?  Then consider tor reprocess your RAW files. The Help recommends that, if your photos have been edited in another app, for example iPhoto.
    Reprocess imported RAW files
If you import RAW files that were already processed by another app, such as Aperture, the RAW processing of the photos might be out of date. If you’re happy with how a RAW photo looks, you can leave it as is, or you can choose to reprocess the RAW file with the most recent version of Apple’s RAW processing software. Note that your photos may look different after reprocessing, and you cannot undo this change.
Double-click a photo to open it, click Edit in the toolbar, then choose Image > Reprocess RAW.

  • Why can't I burn a movie longer than 60 min

Don't know how to be concise on all this but I'll try. I have a 5.50 hour sd video thought mac and imovie would be great, but so far I've spent 35 hours and only have 1 hour of video on a dvd.
One thing I don't understand is the entire movie is 7.8 gbyt (5.50 hours long) I CANNOT BURN THIS IDVD will not allow me to burn the 5.50 hours. I've called Apple support and been told only burn 1 hour "comeon Micosoft got you guys beat. I already edited and burned this entire video on a p.c. with the help of a third party software burning program called xdvd. I used IMovie and the xdvd for the burn. Another problem is space, the movie (after it becomes an event without any editing ) take up 103 gbyt WHY???? The raw movie is only 7.8 gbypt. My entire h.d. is only 320 so this becomes a problem UNLESS YOU CAN BURN THE SUCKERS.
Imovie is very complicated and is not straight forward, I don't know if it would help to use the "compression" I've tried to find this in a manual and don't know what its for?
Does anyone know good manual to buy for either imovie and idvd?? I WISH I HAD NEVER BOUGHT THIS MAC I bought strickly for editing my videos.

    This is a user forum.
I can see your frustrated, but yelling at other users won't help.
This forum is for mobile iMovie (iPhones, iPad e.t.c).
you may need the iMovie Mac forum:

iDVD can burn up to 120 minutes as a DVD.
There are more DVD encoding apps that can make longer videos.
But 5.5 hours on one DVD will be very low quality.
I recommend you break it up into 2 hour parts and burn if you can.

  • Why is my Air application taking so long to show the first view on iOS devices?

I built an Air application that runs on Android devices and iOS devices. The application uses Air 3.4 and Flex SDK 4.6. On my Android device, the application starts in 5 seconds. On my iPad device, the application starts in 90 seconds.
My application has a splash screen, which is launched via the ViewNavigatorApplication property, splashScreenImage.
The application was built in release mode and the SWF file is 1.384M. After I create the ad-hoc build, which includes the Air Captive Runtime, I see the following file sizes and startup times.
    iPad 2 - ipa size, 8.6M
12 seconds of black screen. Then my splash screen appears. 80+ seconds of splash screen. Then my first view appears.
    Android Nexus 7 - apk size, 4.0M
2.5 seconds of black screen. Then my splash screen appears. 2.5 seconds of splash screen. Then my first view appears.
Here are more details about my app.
It's a video conferencing app. So I have to set renderMode to "cpu". The app has 5 views and several popups. The popups use the SkinnablePopupContainer. The app uses dependency injection as provided by the Parsley framework to share two small data objects between the views. The app uses web service calls to manage the conference state.
The problem occurs at startup. I haven't rendered a view with video logic, and the first view is a welcome page with a scrollable text area for terms and conditions, one button with an icon, one toggle button, and one hyperlink button.
The app has about 400k of embedded images which are rendered using the MultiDPIBitmapSource.
The app has 43.3K of icons for the various sizes as specified in the application xml file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I figured out how to resolve the issue. I had to change the renderMode from "cpu" to "direct". That solved the problem, and the application performs perfectly. Even the video displays work ok. It's interesting that Adobe advises against using "gpu" or "direct" renderMode when displaying video. I need to figure out why and make sure the application is acceptable as is.
I have more testing to conduct, but I'm very encouraged.

I goofed. The types of two of the bind variables got reversed:
    Wrong type
    VARIABLE V_PRIM_CUST_CNTL_LOCN VARCHAR2(10)
    VARIABLE V_PRIM_CUST_NBR NUMBER
    Right type
    VARIABLE V_PRIM_CUST_CNTL_LOCN NUMBER
    VARIABLE V_PRIM_CUST_NBR VARCHAR2(10)
Once I fixed this the query reads hardly any blocks at all just as I would expect. I guess the first three fetches got lucky and hit some blocks with matching data. The last fetch must have read through a bunch of index blocks needlessly because it wasn't using all the values in the where clause.
Here are the predicates with the right plan and wrong:

The column PRIM_CUST_NBR had to be converted to a number to compare it with the mistyped bind variable and so none of the columns after that one in the index could be used in the range scan.
