Why is 3D acceleration with nouveau so much discouraged?

From nouveau wiki:
Any 3-D functionality that might exist is still unsupported. Do not ask for instructions to try it.
From archwiki:
If you want to try 3D acceleration or you have problems with it, you are on your own, unless you are looking to contribute patches.
Ok I get that nvidia has a very good proprietary driver for linux, while others like ati dont, so an open-source 3d accel driver for ati is very much important. But shouldnt nvidia cards also have a opensourced driver so that distros can include them in the default install without violating several legal issues? Other than the warnings that I quoted, even bug reporting for the nouveau gallium3d drivers is prohibited. In Fedora 13 just a single 2mb package(something like mesa-dri-experimental) enables gallium3d, and I have had no issues with that, but in arch a lot of packages(some are huge) have to downloaded/compiled to get gallium3d to work. Also no howtos/wiki page to install gallium3d for nvidia.
Without people actually using and testing them how do we get them to be perfect(or even near perfect)?

Soumyadeep wrote:Without people actually using and testing them how do we get them to be perfect(or even near perfect)?
This question would only make sense if the devs thought that their code works.  They don't, although it's getting better.
In fact, I'm glad they discourage use, because my latest experience (2 weeks ago) with nouveau 3D is that running 2 glxgears windows at the same time hangs the entire kernel and nothing but a hard reset will fix it (no magic SysRq, ssh, etc.).  If people started using nouveau 3D, they'd probably be annoyed at losing everything they're working on every few hours.
Apparently though, stability and functionality vary a lot between chipsets, so you may as well try it if you want.  But if it doesn't work, don't bother telling the devs -- they already know.

  • Why do I have to guess how much data I might use in a month when I select a plan?

    When I sign up for water service, I don't guess that I might use 1,000 gallons a month, and then pay three times the going rate for water if I take a few extra showers. I get charged for how much water I use that month.
    When I sign up for electricity service, I don't guess that I might use some set number of kilowatt hours, and then pay three times the going rate if we have a heat wave and I run my air conditioner for a few extra hours.
    Why do I have to guess how much data I might use, and then spend three times the going rate if I stay up watching youtube videos for a few extra nights?
    It is stressful to have to constantly monitor usage, and figure out ratios of how much I've used compared to how much time is left in the billing cycle to see if I need to curb my usage. It is not a good customer experience. I would prefer that data be charged a flat rate based on actual usage, perhaps with an option to throttle speeds at certain levels to prevent cases where a minor lapse in judgment could ruin my monthly budget, like forgetting to check data usage religiously on a device meant to simplify my life.
    Thank you for your consideration.

    Simple answer is Verizon is offering a block of data for usage.
    Where I live the water bill states my wife and I are being charged for 30,000 gallons per quarter/half and the price is say $60 however we never use any where near that amount. I send the meter reading in and it shows the amount we use. But the hamlet we are in has a set amount of gallons. Not fair but we live with it.
    For your data outside of the unlimited which is not available any more to new customers you may be a light user and never go over the 2GB for $30 dollars a month. If you do you will pay through the nose for data. If you pay for more data say 4GB and I don't have the price for it so lets say its $70 then you don't have to watch as much for overage fees. But you are paying for the data in advance so as not go over and get hit with whopping fees.
    It is just the way it is.

  • Problems with nouveau and KMS

    Hi guys,
    tl;dr: Want to have a GUI, tried to get it on my own, got stuck at
    (EE) [drm] KMS not enabled
    (though it should be enabled) and no GUI
    It would be nice if someone little bit more expirienced could help (and perhaps explain) a little bit...
    So here's the long version (In case I messed things up without noticing):
    I installed arch on an old machine. After first reboot screen hung at
    root: clean, 53232/1310720 files, 906718/5242880 blocks
    Got past that installing proprietary nvidia drivers (nvidia-304xx for the GeForce 7500 LE).
    Testing X failed. Got X working with nouveau driver.
    Rebooted and again hung at
    root: clean, 53232/1310720 files, 906718/5242880 blocks
    (So proprietary: terminal, but no X - nouveau: No terminal, but X)
    Tried autologin and start X at login: Same result.
    According to the wiki, KMS
    is required by the Nouveau driver
    and according to http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/KernelModeSetting/
    KMS is on by default
    But according to
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    (EE) [drm] KMS not enabled
    Did some more reading (especially http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/TroubleShooting/ was helpful) but found no useful information (eg. on how to enable KMS), so I decided to ask for help...
    Here's the full Xorg.0.log (What else would be useful?):

    First thanks for answering
    Checked dmesg but it does not mention KMS (dmesg | grep KMS returns nothing)
    and I was not able to find a virtualisation option in my BIOS.
    Also I didn't find something similar looking over dmesg...

  • Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?

    I was under the impression that original raw files were the biggest possible. I appear to be very wrong. Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?
    I'm beginning to think that saving them as psd is a bad idea.
    Yes, though I've heard all the arguments of keepng the original raw files (For ex. Did you throw away the negatives when you were using film) I se eno purpose in keeping them. Once I've made the initial adjustments--cropping, color correction etc. I don't feel a need to ever go back and never do. Most of my work is done in Photoshop and I like it that way--but suddenly finding myself with such huge files doesn't appeal to me at all--and other formats like tif...well never mind for now.

    Good point made c.pfaffenbichler however, my thinking is this--there is time spent on the raw file and then there is much more time spent on (usually a psd) the file once in Photoshop. For me to then go back to the orignal raw file, after having worked on it on PS would mean getting rid of all the work (larger amount of work, time wise and artistic wise) done on PS which seems pointless. Although the psd file does show your layers and stuff it only shows the end results of that layer. It does not show from where to where you pointed your brush, from what point to what point you changed the color or part of an image etc. etc.Anyhow I understand why most people keep their raw files, but this is the main reason why I do not. It would mean hours of work on an image you already worked on (and usually were satisfied with) to perhaps make some minor alteration. Also please note that though I was noce a pro photog, no I do it mostly for fun. Getting the exact red in my Coca Cola can has never been of importance. On the other hand, if there were a way of working on a raw file within Photoshop and keep it (save it as) a raw file equivalent, then I would absolutely do so.

  • I have Adobe Creative Cloud, I thought FormsCentral was supposed to be apart of that.  Why do I need to pay so much more?

    I have Adobe Creative Cloud, I thought FormsCentral was supposed to be apart of that.  Why do I need to pay so much more to add FormsCentral.  Is there something in the Creative Cloud that will work the same way?

    Hi maybeamy,
    Please see Is FormsCentral part of the Creative Cloud?
    You can create unlimited offline forms with the desktop application that's included with Acrobat XI as part of Creative Cloud. If you want to track responses, or create more than one web form, you'd need a FormsCentral subscription.
    Please let us know if you have additional questions.

  • Why can't classes with private constructors be subclassed?

    Why can't classes with private constructors be subclassed?
    I know specifying a private nullary constructor means you dont want the class to be instantiated or the class is a factory or a singleton pattern. I know the workaround is to just wrap all the methods of the intended superclass, but that just seems less wizardly.
    Example:
    I really, really want to be able to subclass java.util.Arrays, like so:
    package com.tassajara.util;
    import java.util.LinkedList;
    import java.util.List;
    public class Arrays extends java.util.Arrays {
        public static List asList(boolean[] array) {
            List result = new LinkedList();
            for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
                result.add(new Boolean(array));
    return result;
    public static List asList( char[] array) {
    List result = new LinkedList();
    for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
    result.add(new Character(array[i]));
    return result;
    public static List asList( byte[] array) {
    List result = new LinkedList();
    for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
    result.add(new Byte(array[i]));
    return result;
    public static List asList( short[] array) {
    List result = new LinkedList();
    for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
    result.add(new Short(array[i]));
    return result;
    public static List asList( int[] array) {
    List result = new LinkedList();
    for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
    result.add(new Integer(array[i]));
    return result;
    public static List asList( long[] array) {
    List result = new LinkedList();
    for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
    result.add(new Long(array[i]));
    return result;
    public static List asList( float[] array) {
    List result = new LinkedList();
    for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
    result.add(new Float(array[i]));
    return result;
    public static List asList( double[] array) {
    List result = new LinkedList();
    for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
    result.add(new Double(array[i]));
    return result;
    // Now that we extend java.util.Arrays this method is not needed.
    // /**JCF already does this so just wrap their implementation
    // public static List asList(Object[] array) {
    // return java.util.Arrays.asList(array);
    public static List asList(Object object) {
    List result;
    Class type = object.getClass().getComponentType();
    if (type != null && type.isPrimitive()) {
    if (type == Boolean.TYPE)
    result = asList((boolean[])object);
    else if (type == Character.TYPE)
    result = asList(( char[])object);
    else if (type == Byte.TYPE)
    result = asList(( byte[])object);
    else if (type == Short.TYPE)
    result = asList(( short[])object);
    else if (type == Integer.TYPE)
    result = asList(( int[])object);
    else if (type == Long.TYPE)
    result = asList(( long[])object);
    else if (type == Float.TYPE)
    result = asList(( float[])object);
    else if (type == Double.TYPE)
    result = asList(( double[])object);
    } else {
    result = java.util.Arrays.asList((Object[])object);
    return result;
    I do not intend to instantiate com.tassajara.util.Arrays as all my methods are static just like java.util.Arrays. You can see where I started to wrap asList(Object[] o). I could continue and wrap all of java.util.Arrays methods, but thats annoying and much less elegant.

    Why can't classes with private constructors be
    subclassed?Because the subclass can't access the superclass constructor.
    I really, really want to be able to subclass
    java.util.Arrays, like so:Why? It only contains static methods, so why don't you just create a separate class?
    I do not intend to instantiate
    com.tassajara.util.Arrays as all my methods are static
    just like java.util.Arrays. You can see where I
    started to wrap asList(Object[] o). I could continue
    and wrap all of java.util.Arrays methods, but thats
    annoying and much less elegant.There's no need to duplicate all the methods - just call them when you want to use them.
    It really does sound like you're barking up the wrong tree here. I can see no good reason to want to subclass java.util.Arrays. Could you could explain why you want to do that? - perhaps you are misunderstanding static methods.
    Precisely as you said, if they didn't want me to
    subclass it they would have declared it final.Classes with no non-private constructors are implicitly final.
    But they didn't. There has to be a way for an API
    developer to indicate that a class is merely not to be
    instantiated, and not both uninstantiable and
    unextendable.There is - declare it abstract. Since that isn't what was done here, I would assume the writers don't want you to be able to subclass java.util.Arrays

    Why am is my 4s loosing so much storage when I sync to itunes about 1GB in the last month

    *Update*
    I thought I had found the offending 'app' namely "Songpop."
    I regularly use "Songpop" on my phone late at night via my wifi connection.
    All enteries on my phonebill are at midnight (even though I have a data allowance it was excluded from allowance). I switched 3G off on Friday, played "Songpop" at midnight and at the exact time I got a "Server Error" message.
    I posted a message on the "Songpop" support forum.At first they said this was a problem relating to my ISP.
    I have spoken to my ISP and asked if there are connection drops at the time I have been billed (ie to establish if my wifi dropped and 3G kicked in without my knowledge) and have been advised that there aren't any connection drops at that time.
    "Songpop" have now responded that "This is an issue to take up with Apple Support"  see: http://support.songpop.fm/songpop/topics/playing_songpop_on_phone_via_wifi_but_i ncurring_download_data_charges_for_3g_useage?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=e mail&utm_source=reply_notification
    Hopefully someone at Apple can respond ....

    Will LR5 benefit of graphic cards acceleration with the new MacPro ?

    Well, although LR5 is a great improvement of speed, the dev. team should try to work on MF files such as from the Pentax 645D… any speed improvement would be much appreciated, especially with dust removal and masking tools.
    My actual configuration is not so bad, but I can't see how to get more speed from it :

  • Why in italy this iphone cost so much?

    why in italy this iphone cost so much?

    You only get that price if you sign a 2 year contract with a US carrier. Figure an average of $90 per months for 2 years of service... that comes out to $2160.00 on top of the $299 for the phone. Or you can pay an early termination fee which will end up costing you more than the price of an unlocked phone.
    The price for an unlocked 32GB iPhone 5S in the US is $749. NOT $299. $299 is the price with a 2 year contract.

    I have follow trouble shooting , they recommend to go system preference -> display , thus can find out the mirroring icon if no mean it doesnt support. But according to the web, Early 2011 MBP should be able to use, dunno why.

    Just realise I havent updated my OS to mountain lion and this is the reason why I cannot use mirroring before ^^

  • Why the 3G connection with Wind don't work on iPhone 4S (iOS 5.0)??

    Why the 3G connection with Wind don't work on iPhone 4S (iOS 5.0)??

    Because Wind is not an officially supported iPhone carrier and Apple warns that using an iPhone on a non-supported carrier's network may mean that some features may not be available or work at all.

  • Why is the iPhone 5 using so much data I have read a lot of complaints and I have went over on my plan and never have?

    Why is the iPhone 5 using so much data I have read a lot of complaints and I have went over on my plan and never have?
    I have even turned off LTE. Cut off my cellular data off of apps. Still uses data I switched back to my iPhone 4 cause I had used my
    Data in 2 weeks!

    I have the same problem on my 4S 64G: I updated to 7.1.1 and burned through my cellular data allowance without running anything that ought to be using it. I incurred an overage charge on Thursday, my new billing cycle started on Friday, and I immediately had used 3/4 of my allowance for the new cycle. I typically do not use my allowance in an entire month so burning through it in a day or two twice in one week is very much not right.
    Possibly unrelated or not: last night I was out, did NOT use any apps that should use cellular data, and came home and my phone refused to connect to my home wifi despite turning this and that on and off. I burned cellular allowance while wifi was available.
    It seems like someting on my phone, whether an app or the iOS itself, is using cellular data even while my phone is not in use. All I could do is turn off Cellular Data in Settings but that very much diminishes the usefulness of a phone that has served me well -- without data overages! -- for several years.
    Please fix this, Apple!

    I received an ITunes and Quicktime update notice on my Windows 7 PC, from Apple this morning. During the update installation, RealPlayer installed. What gives? Why is Realplayer installing with the Apple software.

    Thanks for the reply. I went back to check if there was a history in windows (Event Viewer) but could not locate it in Win7. The only updates that were in the Apple Updater window were the Quicktime and ITunes. Had I let the Realplayer continue on its own, it would have installed the Google Chrome and other apps. I let it finish installing and then removed the entire program. I do not remember checking or seeing anything saying that realplayer was being downloaded until after a reboot was requested from the ITunes Update Installer.
    I just thought it was strange since I do not use Realplayer and have not downloaded any software for it.
    I am on a corporate PC with a pretty thick firewall, but something may have slipped through.
    Thanks again for the assistance.
