Why is a Folder of Bookmarks Deleted at Random?

This has happened a number of times, and I have yet to find a solution. At random, a whole folder of my bookmarks (over 50+) will go missing. I check everywhere and can't locate it, so I have to go back into time until I have the folder again. I won't noticed until I try to type in a website within the folder and it doesn't automatically show the bookmark
Why does this happen? Are there common ways that folders of bookmarks are inadvertently deleted? How can it be fixed?

Possibly you inadvertently move folders. If you have a lot of nested folders it is not easy to search for one as Firefox does not have any search for bookmarks folders option.
Once you find a bookmark from a folder you may open that bookmark and find out where the parent folder is. If you have folders where you will not be able to make a good guess at a bookmarks it contains why not create a bookmark as a label and make the name the same as the folder.
*It does not even have to be a genuine bookmark <br />''foo.bar'' will work as a location.
Or bookmark this thread and rename the bookmark, to remind you what you are doing. Maybe tag the bookmark, or search by name

If you suspect bookmarks are disappearing make regular backups
*[[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer#w_manual-backup]]'''_manual-backup'''
It is worth trying this well respected addon
* https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
It may repair possible damage to the bookmarks database.
It is also able to produce a short .txt report log.
*That may help you decide whether or not 50+ bookmarks are going AWOL.
*It will also report on the status of the database. (So you may wish to run the report logger before and after any repair attempt.)
If bookmarks really are disappearing the above may help. The other option is to try recreating the database, but that may lose information.
Are you using sync ?? <br /> There are often reports of sync apparently misbehaving.

Because you set both of them up using the same Apple ID for the iCloud account. Don't do that. You should each have your own iCloud account, even if you want to share an Apple ID for apps and music. Odds are, you are both receiving iMessages intended for the other as well.

There are hundreds of emails and some other documents. I tried to delete a few of them when I first got the MS office but it did not like that, it said it have to rebuild oulook. Why cant i delete these files? is this Apple version of Window outlook PST files?
These file extenssions are listed as
olk14_message or even or ccontact. I wish I could send a screen print but I dont see that on the key board. Maybe I should have stuck with windows..
Oh the ...olk14_message's.  Do not delete them behind Outlooks back, i.e., from the finder.  Those are the various messages that you sent, received, or deleted in Outlook.  They are indexed by Outlook so if you delete behind Outlook's back Outlook will get confused trying to access those messages.
You can delete them however using Outlook itself.  In outlook select a mailbox (Drafts, Sent Items, Deleted Items, etc.) by clicking on the mailbox on the left.  It will show you the messages in that mailbox.  You can now select all or selected items in that mailbox.  The click the Edit menu and select Delete.  You will get a dialog asking if you really want to delete the selections.  Answer "Delete" and the messages will get deleted.
The olk14_message's you are seeing are the actual messages shown the Outlook mail boxes.  When you actually delete them the way I just described the corresponding olk14_message files will also be deleted.
Note Outlook's Deleted Items mailbox is where all deleted messages go when you click the Delete tool in the Outlook toolbar.   Thus using the Delete tool from the toolbar does not permanently delete the messages.  So if you been using that for months or years you are going to have a very large Deleted Items mailbox.  And every one of those items in there is going to have a corresponding olk14_message file for that message.
So if those olk14_message files you are seeing are from the Deleted Items mailbox you can get rid of all those corresponding olk14_message files by selecting all the messages in Deleted Items and using the Edit menu's Delete.
Alternative ways to the Edit/Delete to do the permanent delete is select (all) the messages to delete and control (right) click to bring up the Outlook contextual menu and select Delete from it.
Finally if you use the Delete tool in the toolbar for messages selected in the Deleted Items mailbox you will be able to permanently delete those too.  It's an exception since using the tool on the Deleted Items means there's no place to put those messages except to "oblivion".
So, in summary, using the Delete tool in the toolbar on messages in every mailbox except the Deleted Items mailbox just moves messages to the Deleted Items mailbox.  But using the Delete tool on items in them Deleted Items mailbox permanently deletes the selected items in there.  And only permanently deleting items removes the corresponding actual ...olk14_message files.

  • Mark folder read causes contents of folder to be deleted. Why?

I've noticed recently that when I mark a folder as "read", the contents of the folder disappear - not "deleted" into the "Trash" folder - but they completely vanish. This is sub-optimal, to say the least.

Why did I lose my Bookmarks?

    Clarification:
I believe now you potentially lose all extensions, plug-ins when you use the new reset function, but you will let me know.
If that is the case, your find corrupt file method maybe better. However, I reviewed the two help articles and there appear to be more files than just the delete search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder. I am confused. Then I have to find the folders. I think help articles mentioned how to find the profile containing the files, but not sure.

  • Finder resets itself to default local folder when I delete a folder from a server. How can I stop this?

    Hello there,
At work I use a Mac Pro (like this one: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-quad-core-2.8-2008-s pecs.html)... and I have a very weird problem that is really annoying.
I don't have the information (but I can get it tomorrow) on the operating system or any information of the server I am having the issues with. But I was hoping maybe some one else with the same issue might have the answer without all of that information.
We use the server to access, open, edit, save, delete, move, etc... all of the files we are currently working on.  No files are ever transfered to our local computer's hardrive and then copied back to the server (don't ask me why, and don't tell me to do that, this is how it's done in the office, and this is what I have to do)...
The issue is this.  When I have to delete a folder from the server, which is usually a folder within a folder, and maybe within another folder, and another, and another (meaning it takes me time to look for this), the Finder deltes the folder (and asks if I am sure I  want to delete it, because it will be deleted forever since I am deleting it from the server)... and when I say yes, the Finder window that I am currently on (the folder which contains the folder that I am deleting) reverts back to the initial "device-folder" for my local mac pro... meaning the folder which is the main folder of that mac pro, where I can see the mac pro's hard drive, any external hardrives, any usb pen drives, any cds, etc...
So EVERY TIME I delete a folder on the server, which is more than 30 times a day, I get "kicked out" of the foler which contains the folder to be deleted, and gows back to tha "main" folder of my computer, so I have to go back to the server, back to the folder, and sometimes it is a folder, within a folder, within a folder, etc, etc, etc, ... and don't tell me the solution is to create a shortcut on my sidebar for that folder, because the folders are the jobs that I may be working on that day, so I could work on as many as 30 different folders per day, and I do have those in my sidebar, but it is still pretty annoying to have to go back to that folder.
One thing I noticed... SOMETIMES, not all the times... IF I delete two folders instead of one, it won't do it... or IF I drag the folder to the trash, instead of clicking on my "delete" icon on my finder's toolbar, it won't do it... but this is only SOMETIMES. So these are not the solutions either.
I can try to get a screen cap tomorrow of the issue, but if anyone has this same issue and knows how to fix it, plese let me know.
I will also try to get more info on my computers OS and the server.
    Thank you,
    MW

Hi PCM1, if i understand well the problem you have is when you click on a URL in a pdf file, the link opens in IE ? Have you checked in the default programs panel to see if all was well set ?

  • How do I create a new folder in bookmarks?

I followed the suggestions from post a year ago, but the answer I was directed to no longer works. This used to be easy until they changed the bookmark section on Firefox. Wondering why there does not seem to be a choice simply marked "New Folder" or if there is, where is it?

To create a new folder in Bookmarks: Click on "Bookmarks". Then click on "Bookmark this page". A small pop-up screen will have fields for "name" (of the page), "folder", and "tags". To the far right of the "folder" field are two downward arrows. Click on the one farthest to the right. This will show you '''all''' the existing folders, and an option to make a "NEW FOLDER".
Before you click on this, you may want to select an existing folder to put the NEW folder into. If so, click on the folder of choice, then click on the "NEW FOLDER" option. The new folder will appear at the bottom of the menu. You can name it now, or later. When all fields have been filled to your satisfaction, click on "DONE". I'm not sure how you'd do it without starting with a page you want to save, but you'll find a way, right?

  • Forum FAQ:Why Application Data folder is not accessible

Why Application Data folder is not accessible
    Question
When I access the Application Data folder with administrative privilege on my computer, I get an error message "Access is denied".
    Answer
    Note:
This FAQ is based on discussions from a previous forum thread (
Accessing "Application Data" in Windows 7 ). Thanks to Ronnie Vernon and other participants' information sharing.
In Windows Vista or later Operating Systems, the default location of user data has changed. The
Application Data folder is not an actual folder. It is a
Junction Point for backward compatibility. A Junction Point is a physical location on a local hard disk that points to another location on that disk or another storage device. It is essentially a shortcut.
You might have noticed when clicking on a folder in
Windows Explorer with a shortcut icon shown on it (a Junction Point ), you get an
Access Denied error message. This is to be expected. By default, the Read permission for Junction Points is set to
Everyone – Deny . You are not supposed to access these folders, and there really is no reason to access these folders.
If you want to know where are those Junction Points pointing to. You can track down the real location of the files by running the command
dir /aL to display all the Junction Points and the locations that the
    Junction Points refers to.
    For example:
If you want to track down all Junction Points on C: drive, please locate C: drive and enter the following command:
    C:\>dir /aL /s

This article is nonsense. Applications store data in this folder that needs "backed up." As one example only, bookmarks for Google Chrome.

  • Missing One Folder of Bookmarks

Suddenly, an entire folder of bookmarks is gone. All my other folders are there, just one is missing. I looked in Recycle Bin, and in other folders, in case I had accidentally dragged it....nothing. I haven't upgraded Firefox recently or done any kind of importing like they talked about in the FAQs. When I go to Organize Bookmarks and search, I can find the individual bookmarks from that folder, but it doesn't say where they are. I am using 3.6.6 with Win7. Thank you.

(Oh, haha, just found a much better way. See my other reply.)
So this does require editing the HTML File, but this tool makes it a breeze. It ensures all the syntax nesting, etc is properly setup, which is the hard part. If you have any trouble, give me a shout out and I'll make a screencast.
    1. Export the bookmarks as an HTML File.
(google importing exporting bookmarks as html for instructions. This method will work for chrome and Firefox, haven't tested on Safari)
    <br /><br />
    2. Open in Notepad and Save as new file Ex. MyBookmarkFolder.html (we'll need the original in a minute) <br />
    3. Go back to your bookmarks in the browser. Copy the name of the folder you want to start at. Make sure it's exactly the same. <br />
    <br />
    4. Find that text in the file you have open in your text editor (Ctrl + F = Find)<br /><br />
    5. Delete Everything before that. <br /><br />
    6. Copy the file/folder you want to stop at (It doesn't have to be nested equally deep) <br /><br />
    7. Find and Delete Everything after. <br /><br />
    8. The Beautiful part. Go to this page, and paste everything in the top box and hit "run"<br />
    http://ejohn.org/apps/htmlparser/ <br />
That will make sure all the syntax is properly setup so your browser can import it properly. <br /><br />
    9. One last step before import. The original file you exported at the very top it'll have stuff life <br />
    <doctype />
    < meta >< /meta >
    < title >< / title >
    Etc
    <br />
Copy everything down to the very first < DL >(about 5-10 lines?) and paste that into your newly formatted file (make sure you don't have to < DL >'s in a row) <br />
At the very end of the file, make sure it ends with a </DL>
<strong> Then you can import the file! </strong> <br />
Of just the bookmarks you selected

  • Why can't I see my deleted photos in Trash?

I have several photos in Trash that I cannot see.  I have cleared all my filters to show all pictures and I still cannot see them.  I repaired my library and there is nothing wrong.  Does anyone know why I can't see my deleted photos in Trash?

    Terrific, Frank!
I just knew, if somebody here can solve a tricky Trash problem, it would be you.
I am trying to explore your solution a bit for future similar cases:
Finding the Trash in the "Albums" section is disconcerting, since it is behaving more like a project - at least, it is  supposed  to be containing images like a project and not referencing them like an album.
So, where is the actual Trash container?
Experimenting with quitting Aperture and then removing the " trashAlbum.apalbum", I found that Aperture does recreate it, when running a "Repair database". Rebuild does not seem to be necessary, if there is not an issue with the library. But without rebuilding or repairing, even adding items to the Trash or emptying the Trash did not recreate this album. Probably Aperture did still hold a cached version. I could not restart the system  before launching Aperture again, because I had a backup running.
Inside this folder are two folders Albums and Folders
Just for the sake of completeness - my "Database" folder is showing a lot more folders inside:
Albums, apdb, Faces, Folders, History, Places, Vaults, Versions, VersionGroups, Volumes
    plus propertylists:  ActiveWebPublishingAccounts.plist, BigBlobs.apdb,
    DataModelVersion.plist, Faces.dbHistory.apdb, ImageProxies.apdb, KeywordSets.plist,
    Keywords.plist, Library.apdb,  Properties.apdb, tmSync.plist, ZoomLevelCache.plist

    Hi k:
That file is in your home folder ~(symbol for home)>library>preferences.
A preference file may (rare, but it happens) become corrupted. OS X rebuilds them as needed. You will need to enter any personal preferences that differ from the default settings.

  • Why is Music Folder So Large?

At the bottom of my iTunes window, it shows my library has 23,346 songs, which accounts for 80GB on my iMac. However, when I check the iTunes Music folder, it says it has 25,649 files, and takes up 120GB. Why is this so much larger???
I do not have much album artwork included. The album artwork folder is only 65MB.
Since I have used 75% of my 500GB hard drive, I am looking for places to save space. Any ideas why the Music Folder is so big?

Your Library view shows how much music iTunes knows about. It doesn't include video for example, you would have to look in your Video window for that. Podcasts etc, are separate too.
Also, if you ever deleted tracks from iTunes without 'Moving to Trash', they will still be in your Music folder.
As there is a less than 10% difference in total files, but a 33% discrepancy in size the likeliest cause could be video - do you have video?
