Why is Airport Express range so CRAPPY

Hi, I'm a big fan of Apple products, except for Airport Express. The reason? The range is appalling. I cannot get it to function at a distance of more than six feet!! I have tried changing the channel settings, but to no avail. It can't be the house as I have a wireless indoor outdoor weather monitor($30) and that quite happily monitors 30-40 feet away. Any suggestions as my wireless music/internet is confined to 5 feet away, they might as well be plugged directly in to the computer!!
Any help would be great

If your computer has a removable wi-fi card (some are integrated) the
antenna cable may not be fully seated into the card's socket.
If the wireless question gets too intense, you may have to see what
a different wireless base station can do for you; should you have a
need to test both the computer's wireless airport capabilities as well
as those of the base station. To use another wireless capable Mac
or PC locally to see what response that gives you may be helpful in
troubleshooting more than just the AirPort Express.
I see Apple certified page has AEBS [extreme base with b.i. modem
and external antenna port] for only $10. more than the Express base.
With another wi-fi capable computer to check your AX output,
or take the AX unit to another location where it can be tested,
may be helpful in further testings. It may be on its way out.
Oh, did your wireless signal appear to act up after you did some
software update or another? Some user's computers did act up
a bit after some updates; mine both appear to work fine wireless.

  • Why my airport express has a yellow light

why my airport express has a yellow light (not blinking)

Before doing a reset try the Airport Utility via Finder > Applications > Utilities ... this might give you a reason for the flashing light.   It could be something simple like the software needs updating.

  • Can the airport express range be limited

I am getting ready to go off to college, and I know I'm going to get a power book. I want to get an airport express to use in my dorm because the school doesn't have wireless internet. However, wireless routers are not allowed on campus because of security issues. I know about mac filtering, and I'm definitely going to use it. What I really want to know is, can the signal strength of an airport express base station be turned down so the signal won't reach too far past my dorm room. I know most people are trying to extend the range, but I need exactly the opposite. thanks-james

You can lower the transmitter power of the AirPort Extreme and Express base stations, which effectively lowers the range. The following article tells you how:

  • Why does Airport Express slow down my wireless network??

Hello, guys! Here I am again, seeking for help...
Ok, so here's the situation: my internet service provides me with 10Mbps. My cable modem is hooked up to a 4-month old Airport Extreme in my home office, two walls away from the living room, where I'm typing from now. Internet's wireless speed in this living room has always been about 10Mbps, barely any loss when switching my signal from cable to wireless.
I then decided to buy an Airport Express in order to extend my wireless network, since I want to work in a room far from this living room and with Airport Extreme alone I got no internet signal there.
Ok, so I installed the Express right at the living room (I can say it's pretty much at the middle of the house) and now I got full internet sign at the far room, great!
HOWEVER, my wireles speed has been cut by half!! At this very same living room where the signal was 10Mbps before I installed the Aiport Express, it's now - at the very best!- 5Mbps!! Needless to say that it's even slower at the far room it was intendend to extend the signal to, but that was kind of expected.
*But why does it cut in half my internet speed at the living room if Airpot Extreme IS delivering 10Mbps at that point of the house??* Am I not setting it up properly, how can I solve this??
Thank you so much for any help you can give me!
    Cheers,
    Renata

  • Airport Express range

Last night I unplugged my Linksys 802.11g and plugged in my new shiny white Airport Express 802.11n. While I was expecting a much faster experience I ended up disappointed in the range of the Airport Express. I suppose I should have done more research but is this common while using the Express as the sole wireless router?
    Thanks for any feedback.

What band did you configure the Express to use? The 5 GHz band may have faster throughput, but at the expense of shorter range. Try configuring it to use the 2.4 GHz band and see if that gives you better range. Two other things you can try with the 5 GHz band are (a) using one of the higher channels (149-161). In some countries that allows much higher signal strength. (b) In AirPort Utility's AirPort panel Wireless tab, click the button for "Wireless Network Options" and check "Use wide channels".

  • What's the AirPort Express range/coverage?

I need a new router because my home's pretty big. I'm not sure if AirPort Express will give me enough coverage or whether I need to buy the AirPort Extreme.

There are a number of factors that need to be taken into account when discussing a router's Wi-Fi range. The most critical is Wi-Fi interference. This interference can come in many forms that include building material, distance between the router and the client, other Wi-Fis operating nearby, microwave ovens, etc. Another is antenna design for BOTH the router and the wireless client.
In practice I find that the 2nd generation 802.11n AirPort Express base station provides a useable range of approximately 150'. Best bandwidth performance is within 50'. The AirPort Extreme is slightly better than this.

  • Extending airport express range

I want to extend the range of my new airport express base station. Can someone tell me how to do this? Do I need to buy an additional unit and if so how do I then install/use it?
I can't work it out from the info on the online store and I have searched the discussions without success.
    Thanks

  • Airport Express & Range Extension

Currently, I have one airport express connected to a window xp server via lan port. The ADSL is connected to the PC. all working fine with my PB 4.
I wish to extend the range of the wireless by using another airport express hardware ( which i have bought).
Two choices are available ,i suppose:
    1. install the second Aiportexpress ( as range extender )on the PC . ( is that correct assumption?)( how many extenders one can have? )
    2. Purchase a wireless router with ( or without built in ADSL) and use the 2 airport express as range extenders. If this configuration is feasable, which hardware would be compatble with my 2 airport express .? Belkin? D-Link? netGear? please advise on Model too
    thanks

The Linksys WRT54G (in addition to Apple's AEBS and AX) provides most users good compatibility.

  • Why does airport express force me 2go wired with my laptop-to-netgear setup

This is what I had and wanted to do: My laptop was connected wirelessly to my netgear router. i wanted to have airport express join my wireless network. after many many hours of trial and error, I've succeeded getting airport express to work with netgear. But, BUT, only if I plug an ethernet cable into my laptop to my netgear router. After getting Airport Express to wirelessly connect to my router, my windows wireless connection says windows can't connect because it failed to receive a signal or response from the router. when i force connect, it's signal strength is so low it doesn't work.
so what gives? i'm seeking a solution that will allow my to go wireless again between my laptop and my netgear router.
is it perhaps something to do with wireless channels? is the airport hogging all the space?
apple should be castigated for making it so difficult to get the Airport Express to work with third-party routers. don't sell something aimed at consumers if it takes conceivably an engineer's brain and hours of fiddling to make it work.
thanks in advance for your swift responses.

As to your first question: You should re-read my post, as I already said: the AX is connected wirelessly to the netgear router. But I'll be clearer:
This is what I had and wanted to do: My laptop was connected wirelessly to my netgear router. i wanted to have airport express join my wireless network. after many many hours of trial and error, I've succeeded getting airport express to wirelessly connect to netgear. As to your second request: I'm loath to publish my settings on this or any forum. Plus, I don't even know what you mean by "wireless pane" and "internet pane" settings. If you can explain the terms, plus convince me posting this data won't represent a security risk to me, maybe.
Finally: I don't want to set up a new wireless network, particularly because, according to Apple, with Airport Express, I don't have to. What's the point of advertising that this thing can "join an existing wireless network," particularly when it seems to have kicked off my laptop from said network?

  • Why is Airport Express blocking a website?

capitalone.co.uk used to work for me. Now it doesn't. Stopped sometime late November. Can't access on any computer - iMac, G5 tower or laptop - all are served across an Airport Express connected to the internet via a cable modem.
If I plug the cable modem direct to my laptop, turning off the Airport Express i can access the capitalone.co.uk web site.
If I turn back on my Airport Express and acccess the internet wirelessly that way i cannot see the site. You try it and see if it happens for you. You get a URL and a request for a jsp page, but nothing appears, the screen remains blank.
Clearly they changed something late in 2005 and it upsets Airport Express NAT so it doesn't transmit the page code to my computers wirelessly.
Perhaps academic now, as I am changing my bank as a result of not getting access and being spooked by the likely failure of capitalone.co.uk to write proper code or doing something not allowed which Airport Express refuses to let through.
But really I'd like to see if anyone else has this prob, and any ideas what capitalone.co.uk are doing that it fails to load. Or has the Airport Express NAT rules been rewritten and something denies this particular web site as a result?
Look forward to any feedback anyone can give.
    G5 Dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Mark,
It may be a security issue with Capital One.
I was as gobsmacked as you when I read your post first time. Then I noticed you use a cable modem. This causes your Mac to be allocated the IP address assigned to your cable modem by your ISP.
When you plug in an Airport Express unit, it allocates IP addresses to the Macs connected to it. Any network traffic out to the web contains the 192.168.1.x (LAN address) and the WAN address (assigned by the ISP) so it knows where to send it on the way back. Without the Airport Express unit, the network traffic only has the one IP address in it.
Capital One may be detecting the presence of more than one address and not trusting it, especially if you're attaching to a secure web page (https).
I remember that they were caught in a large scam about a year ago, involving thousands of missing cards and web fraud. I remember reading (BBC News website) that the Capital One credit card was the most commonly used card in credit card fraud. Hence all the ads with the crab claiming it's extremely secure, and presumably changes to the website.

  • Airport express range problems

First of all hello to everybody, i'm an italian mac user (so excuse my english). In my house i have a dsl connection with a us robotics g wifi old router. I continue to use this router because after a lot of trying i realized that this is the only one that can reach most of the rooms. A couple of days ago i decided to buy an airport extreme sure that it could cover in the same way the house but unfortunately the signal lack a lot so i had to leave the wifi signal of the router on. The thing is that i wanted to buy an airport express too to stream the music, now the question are: how can i boost the signal? have i to try to change the channels? It is better to use the extreme as bridge?

Just an add.....the question about the bridge mode is because on the extreme i have a "double nat" problem.
