Why is Aperture Resetting my Color Saturation?

I recently bought a Canon T3i and have been getting into photography a little. Today I took some pictures with the color saturation moved up slightly on my camera just to see how the images would compare. I noticed that when I imported those images into Aperture, at first it would show them with the color saturation adjustment that I made on the camera, but then after about 5 seconds (and a loading... dialogue), the color saturation would disapear and the image is now like I never adjusted the saturation at all...
Does anyone know why this is happening? I am importing RAW+JPG files with RAW as the original. I'm sure there is some setting somewhere, but I'm a newbie at this and could use some guidance.
Thanks!

This trips up everyone new to RAW.
RAW describes a family of proprietary sensor data file formats.  Your in-camera settings (other than exposure) are applied after the sensor collects the data.  You camera creates a JPG file.  When you import RAW+JPEG w. RAW as the Original, Aperture will often use the in-camera JPG as a place-holder while it converts the RAW file to a displayable image format.  The RAW file contains no in-camera tweaks.  In your case, you are seeing the camera-created JPG, with extra saturation, and then it is being replaced by an image of the converted RAW file, which _by definition_ does not have the added saturation.
RAW is, imho, the only way to go for anything but snapshots.  It does require a new workflow.  To me, a camera is a data collector.  I use my computer (and Aperture) to make pictures from that data.
Read some of the many posts on this in the forum, or Google for "RAW", "RAW+JPEG", or "RAW workflow".
The User Manual is excellent.  At the very least, read the first seven chapters to familiarize yourself with Aperture's workspace.
I found this Adobe whitepaper very helpful as I tried to understand the difference between RAW and JPEG.

  • What is aperture's working color space

When I print from Aperture 2.1 or 2.1.1 to my Canon ipf5000 and use Aperture's print dialogue to set the colorsync profile to me printer/paper profile, prints are very dark and have a yellow cast. I don't experience this problem with Apple Preview or with Photoshop CS3, so I believe it to be an Aperture issue.
If I print without any color management, my prints look reasonable (not dark and yellow). I'd like to note that when I get the dark output I've been certain not to enable color management in the driver.
As a workaround, I am trying to set up color management in the printer driver. I leave aperture set to "System Managed" and then in Canon's ipf5000 driver interface (version 1.3) I set color matching to "ICC Correction." I then set the matching method to "Perceptual" and the output profile to the profile I'd like to use for my printer/paper, but I'm not sure what to enter in the 3rd field - "Input Profile."
I've called Canon Tech Support and confirmed that "input profile" expects the Application's working profile, and I've already tried "Wide Gamut RGB" "Adobe RGB" "sRGB" and "Generic RGB Profile" without finding a setting that matches the output I get from CS3's build in color management (and how it looks on screen). "Generic RGB Profile" is very close, but slightly more saturated.
Can anyone here tell me what Aperture's working space is, or give me ideas about why Aperture's Colorsync color management produces such dark/yellow prints?

Actually when you export JPGs (or other formats as well) you can set the export profile to any profile on your system. Aperture will convert the image to that profile and embed the profile in the image file so that other color managed applications display it properly. The JPG presets that come with aperture happen to convert to sRGB except for whatever reason the preview JPGs that Aperture generates are Adobe RGB and the downloadable JPGs that it sends to MobileMe web galleries are also AdobeRGB, unfortunately there is no way to pick/set a profile for these two operations at the moment.

  • Why aren't Calendar categories colored in month view

On the iPhone 5S under iOS 7.0.4 in the Calendar app, in the month view, existting daily events are indicated by gray dots.  Why aren't these dots colored according to the event category?  My recollection is that used to be the case prior to iOS 7.0.  In day or week view, the time or full day are showing the respective category color.  And on the iPad Air, under iOS 7.0.4, the calendar month view DOES show the category color in the dot! Did Apple forget about this functionality?  I can see there is an event, but not the categories I used (medical, travel, etc).

Comparing this functionality between a larger format such as the iPad and the smaller format on the iPhone is a little like apples and oranges. The iPad in Month view has enough space on each day to show discrete entries - and can consequently show them in their respective calendar colors. On the Phone, it only has space to indicate that one or more events exist (represented by a single dot). If you have more than one event, in different categories, which category color should it display?

  • How can I discover a color saturation in an image?

My name is Eduardo, from São Paulo/Brazil. I'd like know how can I discover a color saturation in an image? For example, I open an image in photoshop CS6 and I'd like to know what a color is more saturated for after to do a treatment with color balance. I tried to use a Color Sample Tool in Photoshop, tried to find some articles and techiques on Google, but without success.
    Somebody help me?

    Hi Eduardo,
Try looking at the Color window.  You can find this by going to Window -> Color.  In the Color window, you can use the eyedropper to select a color and see the color information displayed.  See the screenshot.
    Hope this helps!

  • Color saturation problem in Acrobat Reader 7.0.9 under Linux

    Hi,
I'm working with a guy who is producing PDFs of my work with Indesign.
Using acrobat reader under Linux (version 7.0.1 and also 7.0.9), the colours in these PDFs always appear very saturated. This is a big problem for me because I cannot see with the reference viewer the results of PDFs to be sent to print.
I tried the same pdf file under OS X & Windows, it appears OK with Acrobat reader. Other free pdf readers under Linux also show the right colours (but not always the transparency ;-).
Does anybody has an idea to help me?
@Adobe people: in case you want to test, I drop a copy of my PDF file at: http://cardot.net/files/pdfcolours.pdf (2.24 MB)
    Thanks in advance
    Jean-Christophe Cardot

We are able to reproduce color saturation problem at our end. We have noted down and will work on this.
    Thanks.

  • My film looses color saturation when I export it to Quicktime Movie from FC

My film looses color saturation and punc when I export it from Final Cut Pro. I have tried Compressor, but I think Compressor is quite difficult to use.......
I did add color in FCPRO with Color Corrector and the saturation slider......
Probably not the best way. But I think using Final Cut Pro is a challenge and using the other applications like COLOR etcetera is a quite heavy task to overcome.....

No - it has no effect whatsoever on either the original captured footage or what is in your project.
    It can do no harm.

  • DSR-500 I cannot change the color saturation

Hi, I have a Sony DSR-500 and I wish to change the color saturation. I read the manual very carefully and it says you must go to the MENU at the page 12. The problem is there is no page 12 !. Pages are from 1 to 9.Do you have a solution to my problem? Thank you so much! Guy

I am using the custom title, I would assume that everything about this particular title is editable. All I'm trying to do is set up the text so that it changes color over a period of time.

why can't I change colors of objects?

Thanks KT.  I did mean the Fill color, but my real issue is that changing the fill color in the inspector doesn't change the color of the selected object.  In tis case, I was trying to chnage the fill color from pale blue to the more ingense blue:

  • I am on a MAC OSX 10.9.5, and using LR 5.7.  I have lost the "Develop" Basic Panel (white balance & color saturation).  How do I get it back?  Every thing else seems to be in place.

I am on a MAC OSX 10.9.5, and using LR 5.7.  I have lost the "Develop" Basic Panel (white balance & color saturation).  Every thing else seems to be in place.  How do I get it back?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions in this forum. See this.

  • In Module, the Basic panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

In Develop Module, the Basic Panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

When you say the Basic panel has disappeared, do you mean the whole right side panel or individual tools such as the White Balance tool is gone? If it is the whole right side panel that is missing, you may have hidden it. Using the Tab key, you can cycle between hiding and showing the side panels. You can also move your mouse over to the far right side of your screen to get the panel restored but it will disappear when you move your mouse off the panel. There is also a small triangle on the left edge of the right panel that you can right click on in order to determine the show/hide behavior (I personally use the manual mode).
Regarding the individual windows contained in the left/right panels, they can be opened and closed by clicking of the triangle that is displayed next to name of the tool in its header bar. While you can elect what modules will be shown on the LR Top panel, I am not aware of any mechanism to completely hide individual tools in the left/right panels. If all else failes, you can hit the Shift/Tab key combo a few times to restore all of your windows the the default behavior.

Re DVD Studio Pro 4:  having trouble with the color saturation on the text of menu buttons.  been using the same method for years, checked opacity of colors.  All of a sudden, the text color is splotchy and looks unprofessional. Clients are complaining and I do not blame them.  Any help?

This issue isn't external drives, it's the mini, and installing the program.

Something is very wrong with your system, you need to try repairing the hard drive if possible.  See:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
If that doesn't work, you'll probably need to reinstall the system.

When using iCloud Calendar, I am unable to change the color of my work calendar. I have successfully followed the instructions to reset the colors of other calendars as desired. However, this one calendar always defaults to purple.  Help!

File>New Calendar to create a new calendar (Groups are for grouping calendars and I should ignore them). When you've created the calendar, control-click on it in the sidebar and choose 'Get Info' There you can select a colour. You can have as many calendars as you like. When you create a new event you can select the calendar it belongs to, and hence the colour it has.

  • Can you turn down color saturation?

As questioned in the subject: can you turn down color saturation in osx?
I have bought an external monitor for my Macbook, which i run trough the mini-dvi out. The screen is a nice 24" inch, but does not have an option to turn down color saturation. The colors are a bit to harsh, and i really want to turn the colors down a few notches, especially the reds. But in the built in osx calibration tool, there is not option to "turn down", the colors. I know there is a "grayscale" option in the universal access menu, but there is no slider to make a custom adjustement.
So do any of you have any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

Ok. I am not able to send back my display, so now im stuck with a wide gamut screen. I do not want to just throw it out. There must be some way, a third-party program maybe, that can tweak the way osx shows color. I just want to desaturate the image a little, i shoud not be very difficult, but after hours of searching on google i cant find anything.
Is there a program with extended calibration features, compared to the ones system preferences?
    Thanks in advance!
