Why is Aperture working so slow with Lion?

Working with Aperture is so frustration. It was working OK before I installed Lion. What can I do???

Looks like Aperture 3.2 just came out. Maybe try downloading that. Also, updates to OS.

To add on to Corky02 answer:
The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing  the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or  ill-designedAperture databases.
Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also  repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.
To see, if you will want the advanced image processing in Aperture or the easy to use, more basic options in iPhoro will be sufficient to you have a look at the Aperture User manual, or the tutorial on the support page: Aperture Support
But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.

I want to get a new iPhone to replace this defective phone. I am gonna be crazzzzzzzyyyyyyyy with anger,!!!,!,,,!  I takes2 hours to go to Regent street apple stores for three times!!!!!. It is a lot of transport fees !
PLz tell me why! How to deal with it !

Unless it's confirmed officially that your phone is defective, then you can ask for a replacement. Or you have to live with you. However you can trade it for a new one if you don't care the price drop.

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless prints slow with lion. One page every 1.5 to 2 min.  Apple support and HP no help.  Any suggestions?

Although printer is wireless capable I have it connected directly to iMac via USB to help with speed.  I just completed resetting printer and reinstalling to no avail, still approx 2 min to print one page.

  • IMac works slower with Lion

    Hi,
since I upgraded my iMac (bought it about 2 years ago) to Lion, the iMac Works much slower then with Snow Leopard.
    Greetz,
    Benjamin

It is slower, but the difference should not be significan 10% maybe. Some sites like Hardmac have processed with performance tests. Older Macs are slower, but newer Macs get faster with Lion.

  • Why is Aperture 3 sooooo slow?

Let me first say I just started using Aperture 3 after using Photoshop/Lightroom for years and so far over all I LOVE it.
However I'm finding it to be extremely slow at processing images.
I made a default preset in adjustments that I would like to use on all of my images in a folder. So I lift the settings off one picture and then stamp them to the rest of the photos. (I suppose I could just highlight them all and apply the preset also?) A folder of pictures I'm working on now has 432 pictures and it will take over an HOUR.
This same process in Lightroom using synchronize would take a minute or so at the most. Often times in lightroom I would like to make a change to a picture and apply it to more pictures, which takes seconds. How can I possibly get anything done when I have to wait forever for it to process settings in Aperture?
I've tried disabling certain things like faces, installed the newest update, but its not making a difference.
This is an amazing program, but this is just ridiculously slow.
Any help would be appreciated, but I have a feeling not much can be done. I figured I'd ask anyway
    Thanks

I tried everything suggested, still no luck. Slow as ever.
A simple -.5 contrast adjustment to 400 pics takes an hour, in Lightroom it would be seconds. I just don't get it.
Not sure what to make of that. It should not take an hour (perhaps a couple of minutes).
My understanding of how Aperture works is this:
1 - Import images > Thumbnails and Previews created for each image > completed Preview for the first Version is ready to work on once loaded in viewer.
2 - The process of creating the first Version and it's attendant Preview was achieved by reading the Master > applying the Apple recommended 'RAW Fine Tuning' settings (or using the JPEG information if JPEG Masters) > rendering the settings into the first Version (at this point you have the edit list file - 'XMP'? - in the database for this Version).
3 - When you make an adjustment, you are writing to the edit list file, which Aperture then uses to re-render the Version image.
Although this takes obvious processor power, I am not sure why the big difference between programs for you. I believe Adobe uses the processing pipeline a bit differently (although I am not sure whether they write to the edit list file in the database, or use a cache based system like Bridge).
In Aperture, since you are writing to the edit list, you are saving in real-time. When you export, you flatten the file for final use.
Sorry I could not help more. Good luck.

  • Aperture 3 very slow on lion

running on my macbook pro 2.66 ghz core 2 duo with 4 MB of ram, aperture 3 was lightning-fast in snow leopard, now is mud-slow in lion. as in *unbelievably* slow. is a fix coming?
    f

I had taken the route, over time, of installing Lipn, ontop of SL, ontop of Leopard -- after the upgrade to Lion, Aperture became painfully sluggish. After scouring user forums and a lot of Google searching, I found the one suggestion where you delete cache from a couple directores and a .plist from Aperture. No real difference.
Finally, after, what I would assume to be frustration and morbid curiosity, I used Onyx's automation clean up tools (checked everything but reindex Spotlight), and went the route of trashing my preferences. Full contents.
Long story short, Aperture is in the process of importing and processing about 59k photos and remaining much much more responsive. Instead of taking 36 hrs to complete like before, it's on track to complete everything in about 6.
Lion, as a whole, also seems snappier.
We'll see what happens when Aperture completes processing, but I am a lot more optimistic. I suppose should THAT fail, i'll go the clean-install route.
But, yeah, installing OS ontop of OS ontop of OS is never a good idea, no matter what anyone says -- you wind up with some cross tangled schmutz...

  • CS3: Error "Licensing has stopped working" | Mac OS with Lion Upgrade

    Hi:
My trusty Adobe Photoshop CS3 has quit working with the upgrade to Lion on my Intel iMac.
Specifically, when I try and launch it now I get "Licensing for this product has stopped working. You cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem ..."
I went to this site for advice: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/error-licensing-stopped-mac-os.html
I followed Solution 1: Delete the FlexNet Publisher preferences folder
    It didn't work.
Now I'm trying Solution 2: Run the License Repair Tool
I get to step 5g and type:
    sudo python /Volumes/LicenseRecovery\ 11.6.1/LicenseRecovery/LicenseRecoveryLauncher.app
    I enter my PW.
Then I consistently get an error that reads:
      File "/Volumes/LicenseRecovery 11.6.1/LicenseRecovery/LicenseRecoveryLauncher.app", line 1
SyntaxError: Non-ASCII character '\xfe' in file /Volumes/LicenseRecovery 11.6.1/LicenseRecovery/LicenseRecoveryLauncher.app on line 1, but no encoding declared; see http://www.python.org/peps/pep-0263.html for details
Can anyone help? Thank you very much!

This worked for me (Mac OS) :
    1) you should have opened the LicenceRecovery111.dmg file and you should see in the LicenseRecovery directory a file named LicenseRecover.py
    2) clic on the right of the mouse, do a copy of the LicenseRecover.py and renamed it at the end .pyOld
    3) find in your Mac in the applications the Smultron.app editor (you may need to use a text editor that keeps encoding of the file when it read and save it, Smultron seems to do that), launch Smultron
    4) in Smultron do menu : file - open and find, in the LicenceRecovery directory, the file named LicenseRecover.py chose it to open it.
In the options, I did not have to chose, because the default encoding (Occidental Mac OS Roman) worked for me (with menus in english then), but I think you may chose in the option when you open the file the coding : UTF-8
    4) the first line in the LicenseRecover.py file was
    # encoding: utf-8
    . replace it by
    # --*-- coding: utf-8 --*--
    . save the file
    5) try to re-execute the process as mentionned (sudo python ...)

  • Why does the "Space Preview" suck with Lion

    Hey,
I loved it to view Pics and pdf`s and other files with the Preview when i hit Space. But with Lion, it won`t open the pdf`s and the pics take forever to load and won`t change when i want to flip through some pics.
That ***** big time and i am getting really stressed out about that.
I don`t want to open any program just to have a quick look at files. Thats what a preview is for, isn`t it???
I hope I´m not the only one who has this problem and I hope that Apple fixes it with the next update or maybe anyone else has an idea how to fix it.
    Thank you in advance.

I can tell why Cmd-F blows; because Apple has figured out a better way of doing the same search.
Cmd-F used to be the preferred way to search for system files, but the searches can be inconsistent. Don't waste your time. Instead, use the key combination Cmd-Space to bring up Spotlight; this will bring up all of the relevant files, as well as web searches, and will even group the searches for your convenience.
Cmd-F is still a great tool if, say, you're using a browser like Safari; this will search a page and highlight pieces of text.
If this information doesn't suck, or even if it does, post here so others can access this same info in the future!

  • Lion mountain newest update :I loos the internet connection, but the network shows connected. And IPhone, IPad stay connected and work. Only the MacBook Pro , which worked perfectly before with Lion unless I updated to Mountain. I have tried everything.

I have a MacBook Pro, Early 2011, 2 GHz Intel Core i7 which I udated some days ago with Lion Mountain 10.8.2. Before it worked just perfect. Now, since the update,  I loos the internet connection after a wile, (at the beginning every 20 sec, now up to 4 hours) even that the sign of the WiFi network connection shows to be perfectly connected.
My other divices like IPhone, IPad stay connected and work. The rooter is new and cannot be the problem. I tried nearly everything I found on the bloggs, but nothing helped actually. It must be a softwear problem on Lion Mountain, what can I do?
    Thanks for any help

    I FINALLY SOLVED THIS ISSUE!!!!
New routers have "mixed" modes for your network; this means that it will automatically choose the best option between wireless-B, wireless-G and wireless-N network modes. I used to experience this issue using the 2.4 GHz. mixed mode wireless network.
Thankfully, my router can create 2 networks: a 2.4 GHz. network and a 5 GHz. network.
When I randomly changed this value to "use only wireless-B and wireless-G" trying to fix an issue with a wi-fi expander, the iMac wi-fi  issue dissapeared! I tried it with wireless-N only, but it didn't work.
So, finally, I have a 2.4 GHz network with only wireless-B and wireless-G modes which works PERFECT with the iMac, and a 5 GHz. network with a mixed* wireless mode for everything else mode.
*PD: by "mixed" mode it means that the router will automatically choose between B, G and N network modes as it fits better.

  • Mathematica7 slower with Lion?

Anyone had problems running Mathematica7 under Lion OS? It is much much  more slower on version 10.7.2  than on version 10.6.8!
Lion takes ~ 3min just to open or open a file! Do you know how to improve it?

It is slower, but the difference should not be significan 10% maybe. Some sites like Hardmac have processed with performance tests. Older Macs are slower, but newer Macs get faster with Lion.

  • MacBook boots much slower with Lion

I have a late '09 MacBook, and installed Lion on release day.  I noticed that every operation was slower - switching between apps, loading messages in Mail, refreshing web pages in Safari, start up, shut down - the gamut.
I installed additional RAM, going from 2GB to 4GB.  Switching between apps, and app response is much better, but the boot up process is still super slow.  With OS X 10.6 my boot time was around 30 seconds from hitting the start button to having a functional desktop.  With Lion and 4GB of RAM that time has at least tripled.
Is it just me?  Any ideas on how to resolve?
    TIA.

Whenever you install a new version of OS X, there's something called "Indexing" that takes place after the installation is complete. This uses a large amount of processing power but it only happens once, and can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on your system. Once this process is completed your system will return to normal. It has nothing to do with Lion itself.
Indexing, btw, allows you to find things in your Mac using Spotlight and Smart Windows
There's nothing you can do, but there's also no need to worry about your computer

  • Why does print function in Preview with Lion OS not work?

Since upgrading to Lion, the print functionality on Preview does not work.  When you select Print, the rainbow wheel of misfortune appears and I have to force quit Preview after a while. The print window does not even appear to select a printer (I have multiple print drivers and drivers installed).
All other aplications print nornally as before the upgade.

    Hi,
After upgrading the EPSON drivers to version 2.8 under Lion, I now have an issue when printing PDF's with preview. Some text will not be printed, which is very odd. I have an Epson ALC2800 connected via ethernet, and I can successfully print the same documents from my windows 7 PC, or even from Acrobat reader on my MBP.
So, it seems that the issue is present in Preview, or at the least in the way, it prints. I hope someone can help me with this, because I use preview all the time (and I quite like the functions which are not present in Acrobat Reader)
    thanks in advance,
    David

  • Why does my computer run slower with Aperture installed

I installed Aperture on my MacBook Pro and now it runs slow when the program is open.

    Nikon,
Aperture does lots of background processing after you first install it.  It is likely that Aperture is performing some of this processing as soon as you open it now.  You can get a good feeling for what it is doing if you show the Activity with {Command}-{Shift}-0.
You may have to let Aperture crunch away for hours or even overnight before it is done.
