Why is apple abandoning EPEAT?

Today I read that Apple is abandoning the registration of its products with EPEAT.

Apparently the construction of the new MacBook Pro with retina display is not easy to recycle because everything is fused or glued together. Personally, that would be reason enough for me not to buy it. But why are they abandoning environmental registration for all their products? I think Mr. Jobs is turning over in his grave. This is going to be a problem for educators, schools, and others who use this as a bench mark of enviromental impact.
As a long time Apple user this is sad day.
I hope Tim gets Apple's act together and solves this problem.

iPhones and iPads never had ePeat certification. And Apple has made it clear that the Retina MacBook Pro is a sign of things to come. Apple is finally achieving the original intended goal of the original Mac. This is to make a closed box that has no customization and forces consumers to continually buy the next product in the series. Bonding and glueing and sodering and custom connectors ensure that end users do not modify the system.
This does not mean that Apple no longer cares about the environment. This just means that the way Apple is producing its products no longer comply with a standards organization's description of environmentally friendly product design.
Apple continues to use materials that have less of an impact on the environment. Apple continues to reduce packaging materials. Apple continues to reduce the weight of devices.
But I agree that Apple is missing the boat on this one. We support a number of corporations who have adopted green initiatives that include purchasing devices that meet epeat standards unless a viable alternative does not exist.

I hope that I have a defective system, because if I dont then apple has abandoned one of the few things that has remained constant since 1984!
I have always done all of my documents using the chicago font, but since we wiped everything on our emac and installed Tiger, chicago is nowhere to be found. this is the font that first made me attracted to the Mac, and its freindly but strong feel has been with me for my entire life! Why can I not find it on my computer, where can I find it???

If you've placed the Chicago font into one of OS X's Fonts folders, then it should be working. If not, then something else is amiss. All previous Mac TrueType fonts work in OS X.
As Kappy and Tom have pointed out, you can reinstall OS 9 to retrieve all of the fonts from the OS 9 installation and use them. If you have any retail copy of OS X, those disks don't include Classic (OS 9), so you'll have to use an older set of OS 9 disks. Matthias' eMac install disks should have a copy of OS 9 on them. They don't exactly stick out as the installation package for it is called something like "Additional Software".
Once you have them installed you can move, or copy all of the fonts from the /System Folder/Fonts/ folder to one of OS X's Fonts folders. It's preferable NOT to use the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder. Use either the Fonts folder in your user account, or the globally accessible (all user accounts) /Library/Fonts/ folder.

Why is Apple abandon the 4" screen?, many of us don´t want the bigger IP5 screen.

The original screen size of the Iphone was subject of many considerations and analysis, after many considerations it finally was the 4" screen present in more than 400 million units in the world.
Now Apple is presenting only the bigger IP5 screen and:
1. Bigger is not better.
2. Is heavier
3. Don´t fit in the shirt front pocket (an important consideration at the begining in 2007)
4. It´s the "original" the way Steve Jobs decided.
So is any reason why Apple decided only for the bigger size?

Is FCP X the end of FCP for pros? Has Apple abandoned us? No longer can open my older files?

It looks like FCP X is a useless app for any pro application. With no capture from or to tape (Which is still widely used in the pro industry) and we will no longer be able to open a version of our edit from any previous FCP project. The exports and imports have been severly limited. What is Apple doing? Why make FCP more like imovie? Obviously the changes were designed by guys in suits and designers who have no experience in the industry. I guess it's time to switch back to Avid or even Adobe Premiere. I know my company is selling 40 of their Mac work stations and switching to PC and Premiere. Something I don't want to do but if I want to contine working in the industry it may not be a choice.

Why wont apple let me get an apple ID without a "no credit card" suggestion in the payment method?
I dont buy my apps and I dont understand why my sister (and other people) were able to make an apple ID without putting a credit card.
Though I can enter my apple ID account when it comes to the game center, when I try to download an app that problem always appears. So now I'm using my sister's ID, but I really want to have my own.

Follow it through to the payment methods and choose None if it is available.

I travel all over the world, and so that is why I need one like that. It is unfair to the consumer, and frankly turning away customers like myself willing to pay high dollar to Apple for their product, who can I speak with to complain about this, because I know their are factory unlocked iPhone 4S' sitting in a warehouse somewhere just waiting to be shipped, and I want one. I know why, cause Apple signed contracts with each carrier so the carrier could increase their sales making customers sign 2 year contracts, I get it, I own my own business, but the delay of releasing factory unlocked ones is just not right and I should be able to buy one without having to buy it over in the UK where it is unlocked when it comes out right away, I should be able to buy it in my own country! These business practices we practice in the US need to stop, their is a demand that needs to be met with consumers like myself who don't need subsidized iPhone's with 2 year contracts with carriers and don't mine paying full price for an unlocked one, it is unethical in a sense, forcing the customer to buy it with a carrier contract and NOT giving the customer the option to buy it full price and own it themselves, OR, making the consumer wait a month for that option to be available. THEY SHOULD BE RELEASED AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!! THAT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO!!!!!!
Apple can contact me and I will proudly pay for one. But making me wait a month for an unlocked one, puts AT&T, Sprint & Verizon's interests before mine, and that is not right, for it is MY money that keeps you guys in business, so my best interests should come first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand your frustration, but when any form of rationing is required you have to prioritise. The number of unlocked vs packaged phones will be quite small and the number of unlocked buyers wishing to upgrade immediately will be smaller still. Against this you have the corporations sharing $billions between them.
It would, you're correct, have been fairer to release all at the same time, but fairer doesn't come into it: it's business.

I'm getting a similar problem with my Macbook Pro. itunes match was working fine until two days ago when i created another 'user id' for the laptop and then an itunes account for that user under their profile. Now i cant turn on itunes match on my itunes under my user account. Contacted Apple today who said to use the Express Lane and email the problem and they might be able to make an 'exception' on the account. Otherwise I'll have to wait 88 days to access a lot of my music on the macbook pro. itunes match is still working on the iphone 4S and ipad2.
Can anyone help? The only thought was too re-stream the laptop. Ive already tried deauthorising the other user but it made no difference.

In Address Book, why does Apple let you create custom fields in the Template cards but not have them available for importing?

I open Address Book, go into Preferences, select Template and under the Names field (friend, assistant, father, etc) I add a custom field called "Principal".
I also add two more custom fields in the Email area.
Quit Address Book then relaunch. Add a new contact and the new custom fields, Principal, etc. are there. All good so far.
I have a Now Contact file with about 200 contacts in it. I export all fields as a Text file, Tab delimited. No problems there. With Address Book launched, select Import, pick the text file, leave Text Encoding on Automatic and click Open.
The window that shows the fields for Address Book and fields for the text file side by side opens. This is where you match up the correct fields for importing. If I go to one of the fields from the text file that I created a custom field for, click under the Address Book heading on the Do not import, scroll thru the Apple choices of fields, none of the custom fields show up. Only the original Apple ones are there. Why does Apple let you create them in the Template area but not have them available for importing? Does anyone have suggestions on getting around this?

While most likely not of interest to you, Spotlight can also tell you where the files it finds are located
Hover the mouse pointer over the name, and press Command-Option and the path to the file will be displayed.
As for opening a terminal session in the directory where a file is located, there is Applescripts that do just that as well as specific features in Lion/Mountain Lion terminal:

This has nothing to do with Apple, as Apple does not make the apps.
This is the decision of the app maker.
Contact those app makers and ask them why they do this.

The kit is firmly inserted in thhe iPad's dock ? You could also try a reset and see if it's recognised after the iPad has restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
I haven't had problems using the kit with SD cards from Canon cameras . What capacity is the card, and it's an SD or SDHC card - if it's an SDXC card that's formatted as ExFAT then it won't be recognised

It was because the problem was major. If you do not know tech, you should know that a two day outage usually indicates some type of virus, hack, or a bad software load that they had to unravel. The common way to solve that is to rebuild servers and put back into service. That takes time.
Apple did not want to admit this problem. My guess at this stange was that they loaded new software that might be associated with the new IOS and it crashed. To reveal this would be to cast into doubt their future revenue.
Either way. Run do not walk away from Icloud products and services. Apple has demonstrated they can not be a business partner.

I cannot get my printer to work, and might just sell this stupid gadget, I am so annoyed at apple playing god with things, if you want it to work you have to jailbreak it, and the up pos Apple again, if you break it we will not repair it, that tells you exactly that they are playing god, wake up apple and smell the coffee.

I have a Kodak wifi printer and print using the app Print Magic. I do not need to have any of my home computers on to do this as they have nothing to do with wifi printing from my iOS devices (if you do not have a wifi printer and are sharing the printer off another computer, then of course, that computer needs to be on and connected to your wifi network).
You can post with all the hyperbole you want, but none of us have any inside information as to why Apple's devices and iOS do certain things a certain way, or why they do not do things in the particular specific way you wish them to. Airprint does not work with Kodak printers at this time. There are numerous apps that will allow you to print to just about any wifi printer.

Why did Apple make the new iPod unable to use Griffin iTalk or iTrip?

I was so disappointed when I upgraded to the new 5th gen. iPod and was unable to use the accessories I purchased for my previous iPod. Am I missing something? What am I supposed to do? In Lion, why did Apple remove the up/down arrows in the scroll bars? There is currently no way to move up and down in small increments. WHY????

Every mac operating system software until Lion had the ability to use up/down arrows in the scroll bar. This makes it easy to move up and down in small increments. In Lion, it is impossible to move up and down in small increments. Click on the scroll bar and it moves up or down an entire page. When you try to put the curser on the scrollbar and move it up just a little, it moves a whole bunch. With the up/down arrows, you can click on the arrow and it will scroll ulp or down one line a time. There is no way to do this in Lion. Why would apple remove the very useful feature of up and down arrows.
