Why is Apple Discussions so extremely unreliable lately?

For several weeks now Apple Discussions is down for several hours every single day. Furthermore it is very slow at times. Why is that the case? It used to be very stable before that.

I've also noticed many problems with logging in and speed over the last month or 2. Maybe just coincidence, but it seems to have started about the time of the announcement about Mod numbers being reduced. Maybe they reduced the Techs too?
And each time I can't log in a terrible thought crosses my mind, 'This is it! This is the end of Apple Discussions'.
Maybe I'm just paranoid. But this my primary source of info when I come accross a new problem. And I would hate to lose it. After the cull, I'd feel a whole lot better if there were some expression of support form Apple about the future of these forums. Maybe I've missed it but I have seen nothing.
Anyhow, back from opining. The Apple.com > Support > Discussions page used to have an area called 'Status' or Notices' or something, on the right-hand side somewhere near 'Top Rated members'. Mods would used to regularly post helpful info about outages there but now that seems to have disappeared. It would be useful & informative to have it back. Or, even better, some kind of 'System Status (last 30 days)' indicator like at the bottom left of http://www.mac.com
Cheers,

  • Unable to Log out in Apple discussions

When I try to log out in Apple Discussions, I get an error message saying cannot find page. I have to shut down Safari to logout. I haven't had any problems before. I did have to change my Apple ID to be able to use my new iPod Touch recently so would that have made a difference, or is it something Apple Discussions has been experiencing lately?

I have also had some intermittent flakey behavior the past few days but have attributed it to using a Windows Vista machine a few times instead of the Apple equipment
Seriously, the problems I have seen have been more along the lines of not being able to just back up from the second page in a forum to the first page. Have to manually hit page 1 to get back. A few times, backing up has taken me to the login page...hit the back arrow again and revert to the master list. Just a little flakey lately and inconsistent.
Nothing disasterous, though, so I have just been living with it...may be due to very high usage, when the MBA was announced the system seemed to come to its knees...just way too many people logged in is my guess.

  • Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

    Hi,
Apple in this case has to rely on what software is out there that can handle the amount of Traffic that these boards get.
This is from the Brows Option the selecting People in the box
    Note the Number
At the Launch of the new software this was at just over 2,250,000 and has now topped 2,300,000
That is well over 50,000 people joining in just 2 weeks.
Jive are the only real players in this market.
To some extent the software is a one size fits all, much like the previous software was.
We got used to the look and the Folder type layout of the Previous software.
We ignored the foibles of where things were placed.
Things are somewhat double edged in my view.
    I post mostly about iChat.
I don't like that the Leopard and Snow Leopard forums that were are now "Refine the List"/Tag led searching to read specific threads. (not to mention that returning to "Dicussions" loses the "refinement").
On the other hand those same threads and anwsers are now a lot more viewable in the OS forums than the subforums of before.
As a regular poster I use a couple of Boiler plate things for a welcome message and my Signature.
Some were made with TextExpander and included the HTML code to sttyle things slightly.
These no longer work without going to the HTML editor.
Posting link used to use the BBCodeXtra add-on to Firefox but this action is now included in the Regular and Advanced Editor.
That means I equipped myself and used things to get around shortcomings of the old software which is some cases I either don't need or need to learn the new way.
I am sure the Style will morph as we go along.
Of course some of this relies on what exactly you mean by:-

  • No search window in apple discussions anymore? Why?

For some reason there is no search window in apple discussions anymore. No matter which browser I open the only search window is up to the right of the "support" on the menu bar. I can no longer search apple discussions. Has something changed here?

If you do a search on these forums, you will find many threads that confirm that Apple has temporarily disabled the search function and they will try to put it back soon.
Trying to make a little joke there.

  • Time Capsule extremely unreliable

I'm using a 1GIG Time Capsule as my router, for wireless access, and as a hard drive. It is wired to both my MacBook Pro and my PS3. I'm using it as a PPPoE device connected to a modem on my phone line. The problem is that the Time Capsule seems to be extremely unreliable. It will work for 10 minutes or 24 hours, but then it will stop communicating with the internet. I'll have to unplug it, quit my bittorrent client, plug it back in, and then it will work again, for a while. Also, when I mount it to use it as my iTunes library, I can't count on the hard drive to stay mounted. It will just drop with no explanation, and again I'll have to unplug it and plug it back in. Then it will work fine for a while. Unfortunately, a lot of the time these problems happen at night when I can't monitor them. Does anybody have any suggestions what could be causing this? Unfortunately, my knowledge of networks etc. is minimal. But I don't understand why it will work for hours or days, and then suddenly stop. Also, my net monitor tells me I'm downloading as much as 24GIG of data in the course of a day, which is absolutely ridiculous. Could this be related?

My first inclination is to say revert to your previously working excellently OS. Since the issue is clearly Mavericks and not the TC.
For most people upgrades are one way because you have no disk image to revert and TM doesn't actually work that well.
    Fix it by
    1. Factory reset of the TC.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. In the new setup use all SMB names.. Mavericks now uses SMB network protocol by default.
SMB names are short.. 2-20 characters is plenty.. less than 10 is great.
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric. No apostrophe.
The only security worthy of the name is WPA2 Personal. Use either nothing.. or that.
Password should be 10-20 characters pure alphanumeric.
    3. Ensure the wireless and ethernet on the computer are set to link-local for ipv6.
    4. use ethernet for speed testing. NOT WIRELESS.
If the ethernet speed is as expected you are ready to begin wireless testing.
Wireless has one zillion things which can go wrong.
Check the wireless diagnostics in the computer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5606
The issue with wireless may have nothing to do with the TC and is pure Mavericks driver issues.
    Good luck.

  • Issue with setting up an account for Apple Discussions

Off and on for 4 or 5 years I have posted questions or responded to them the in PowerBook G4 15" Titanium section. Then a couple of weeks ago I tried to log in and was informed that my Apple ID had been disabled for security reasons. I then created a new Apple ID and password and had no difficulty logging in with that. However, to post in the Apple Discussions I was prompted to create a new account for that purpose. When I filled in the fields, checked the box agreeing to the conditions, and clicked the Submit button, I got no error message, but the "Create New Account" screen reloaded and I still couldn't post. Clicking login just brought up the same screen again. After trying and failing to create a new posting account off and on over a period of a week I finally went to the Seattle Apple Store to see if they could help me. The first employee kindly went through the steps with me three times with the same baffling result. Finally a second employee helped me and was successful on his third try (I thanked him profusely!). However, even he could not identify the problem because no error message ever appeared. Was I trying to use an alias that didn't work for some reason? Does the Other Computer Information field need to be filled in even though it looks optional because it doesn't have an asterisk? Is the secret to get help at an Apple Store? All just FYI.

Thanks, jpfresno. The Apple Store guy also suggested that the alias I wanted might already be in use, but evidently that wasn't the case.
At this point I should clarify that my account issues have been fully resolved. The point of my post is a larger issue--usability of the Create New Account screen. The fact that neither I nor two Apple Store employees could figure out why attempting to create a new account for Apple Discussions repeatedly failed was due to lack of feedback after clicking the Submit button. I would normally expect to see a message like "This alias already in use" or "This field must be filled in" but there were no messages of any sort.

  • Why did Apple raise its prices overnight by $200 on the iMac, including refurbished models.

Other than greed and trying to narrow the spread between the price of the old iMacs and the just-announced new iMac, why did Apple raise its prices overnight by $200 on the iMac, including refurbished models? Their existing product component costs didn't increase overnight.

I was "literal" because I quoted the ToU. Did you read the ToU you agreed to when you established an account? Available here:

  • Why did Apple remove the Hold-Menu/Backlight function?

I just updated to ipod software version 1.1.1 and wondering why the "Hold Menu to switch Backlight on/off" function was replaced with "Hold Menu to return to Main Menu" function???
Ive been a huge fan of the Menu-Backlight switch since my 4G ipod, as I prefer to always keep the Backlight off and use it only when I absolutely cannot read the screen. I find it saves significant battery life compared to even the 2 second Backlight Timer. In the dark, this function is very practical especially since performing a simple operation such as adjusting volume or skipping tracks doesnt require any backlight. Also, I take a dark ghetto commuter bus and try hard to not draw attention to my 5G ipod with a bright glow from within my jacket pocket.
Why cant Apple offer an option in Settings menu or an alternative version with different Hold-Menu functionality?

Well the beauty of the old Hold-Menu>Backlight function was that it was basically a quick on/off switch...light turns on...light turns off...whereas the new "Quick Return to Main Menu" function didnt really solve a problem. If you need to get return to the main menu, you can blindly press Menu repeatly until you reach the main menu, how hard is that? Also, you only need to press Menu a maximum 4 times to reach the Main Menu from any submenu (unless youve created multiple subfolder hiearchies within the Notes folder.
My point is, as a result of elimination of the Backlight "switch" is increased precise navigation, which equals a loss in usability and practicality. So what happens when you suddenly need to use backlight? You either prepare in advance, lets say everyday before you head home from the office, you need to remember to set the Backlight Timer on. Or you face the scenario where it gets kinda dark by the time you leave the office, but you forgot to turn on the Backlight Timer...now what? Well look for some well lit place to change the settings, or if you can blindly navigate to the main menu and scroll carefully and precisely to the Backlight option. Ok a little extreme but I hope some of you reading this GET it.
So far the only way to retain this practical function is reverting to or continue using ipod software version 1.0. The most annoying thing about continuing to run v1.0 is everytime you connect the ipod to the computer, theres a popup begging you to update the ipod software. By refusing to update, you will miss out on some bug fixes (esp for Videora converted videos) and the volume limiter function.
Show your support for the lost Menu-Backlight function and maybe Apple will hear us out.

  • Copy and Paste to Apple Discussions.

    Hello,
Could someone tell me why when I copy then paste this text it results in the first characters of every line disappearing? At least that is what appears to be happening here. I say appears because I have already copied and pasted the below AppleScript and on every line there are characters missing from the beginning. My uncertainty arises after that though because when I type text after the pasted material it also seems to be missing the first characters. I have a screenshot here of the entered text (after the pasting) highlighted while being entered due to spelling and as you see the highlighted portion seems to start before the text enter box. Note: This has made me wonder if the text will show after posting.
I should also let you know that I tried to paste the material to TextEdit and had no problem there. Furthermore I tried to copy the text from TextEdit and paste here in Apple Discussions but received the same result of missing characters. At the very end I copied and pasted something from Notes. It worked fine - no missing characters.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Why does apple not remove the malware Genieo

Why does apple not remove the malware Genieo - it takes over the Safari browser even with extensions turned off - firefox works fine but the malware is still alive and kicking on my mac.  Should I just uninstall safari and hope the malware is not doing more damage in the background?

    Hi Sickof --
Apple has never had anything to do with Genio.  It is sneakily installed with other apps you think would be helpful. It is very sickening, IMHO.
Here's a thread here -- It's long, I know, but it's got great information for you.

  • HT3209 Why does apple not allow me to download an hd movie to my pc? Why doesnt apple get it that I simply want to download a hd movie to my computer so that I can repeatedly watch the hd movie via apple tv to my pc as opposed to using isp bandwidth?

    See title.

This does not answer you question as to "why does apple", because for some reason Apple will treat us like children and try to do everything for you. An unrelated example would be trying to change the IP address of an Airport Extreme Base Station. You cannot. It will always grab the first IP in your subnet whether you like it or not. OK I digress. What I can say is that iTunes, in it's infinite wisdom, will look at your display and decide whether it will playback a HD movie (minimum 1280x800). If not, based upon display settings, it will refuse you the HD download. The "why" I cannot answer other than if you buy the HD movie on any other device like your iPhone 4 or iPad, you cannot share it from your library. So, maybe they get to sell more copies of the movie? That's my best guess. I've been an Apple guy since I first bought my Apple IIe. But honestly, I fume at them for being entirely non-responsive to their customers. Another example is the loss of the scroll arrows starting in OS Lion. Despite thousands and maybe millions of customer complaints, they refuse to listen. (Wow, I feel so much better...)

  • Help, please with navigating Apple Discussions

Having installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5c, iPad 3 and iPad 4, it's bad enough that the text size and color on this support site has become so small (tiny, really) and so faint (would  like to get my hands on whoever thought light grey was a good idea), now I'm constantly frustrated when attempting to search for a subject, return to a subject category after reading a thread, etc.  For instance, I want to look at problems with Safari. So I choose ipad>using iPad>Safari (chose Safari from the subject headings that one can scroll through at the top of the list of topics)>read a post. But when I try to return to the list of Safari-related threads by choosing the Back button, instead it goes back to the combined subject list and have to scroll across to the Safari subject category again, which again starts from the beginning of the list of topics, not to where I left off gong down the list. I tried the other possibilities (return to Using IPad, etc.), no joy. Am I missing something here? I just want to search for a subject, read applicable threads, and when done with a thread return to the previous page at the spot on that page where I left off.
I have been using these discussions long enough to remember when the postings were organized logically and after reading a thread, hitting the Back button returned to the exact spot I'd been linking from to get there. It seems like each "upgrade" to the site has made it less and less logical functionally. Simultaneous to those changes has been the inability of Safari to return to ANY previously accessed webpage at the spot where I left off reading, instead going back to the top of said webpage instead.
IF someone can show me the error in my thought process here I would be only too happy to be proven wrong.

Demo, All the clearing and resetting isn't fixing the problem. Out of curiosity, after reading your post, I checked out the issue on my MacBook Pro, and Safari has the same problem of not returning to the previous page under the selected catagory Safari, for instance, from which I had clicked the link to read the particular thread. I see another poster is having the same problem. Can't imagine why it's working for you.
I just now also tested the problem with the Mercury browser, and had the same problem! So it appears it may not be a Safari problem but rather an Apple web design problem. Looks like it's time for an email to Apple Feedback, though  frankly, I don't hold out much hope for help from that avenue as Apple of late seems intent on marching to the beat of their own drums rather than listening to their customers.
As to how the site as a whole is designed, bottom line, it's Apple's responsibility to test and give their stamp of approval before anything is implemented, so while they may have subbed out their website design, the buck stops on Apple's desk for any problems.
I spent my early-adult years (many years ago) as an executive secretary, and I can say that if you can set up and use efficiently a filing system for piles of paperwork you develop an inherent understanding of how data bases and Search functions should work. There's just no logic to this website any more! I can only guess that the designers never had  to do any "real" hands-on filing.
Re keeping multiple tabs open, I find that leaving more than three or four running at a time slows Safari way down, so I tend to limit open tabs.  But it's an interesting idea for following Apple discussions if you spend a lot of time here. I'm not using this site as much as I used to as it's become just so annoying to use on so many levels.
