Why is Apple mouse so limited?

Coming from a PC, I find the Apple mouse really really annoying and limited. How the **** do I scroll up and down without a scroll wheel? Come on guys, this is 2014. Are you intentionally ******* people off? Do I have to go out and buy a 3rd party mouse that can do what a Windows mouse does?
There is a gray scroll bar that is supposed to appear when you hover close to the right edge of a panel. You grab it with the pointer and slide it up and down. On this brand new iMac, it appears sometimes and sometimes not at all. What is up with that? Sometimes I have to hurry to get the pointer over there only to have the scroll bar disappear. Then I have to use the up/down keys to scroll. That's pretty stupid stuff there.
I love the look of this Mac, and I'm sure Mac people are used to it and don't complain. But for a PC person it's freakin maddening trying to simple things. Help me out here. Maybe you should have a tutorial on the support page on how to use the Apple mouse if you came from a PC.

If you have a Magic Mouse go into the System/Mouse preference pane and set the scrolling and swiping settings there.  If you click on an item there will be a demo of that feature in the window at the right.

  • Why cant Apple make a better keyboard/mouse

I went to Costco today and brought home the Microsoft Wireless Desktop 6000 and plugged it into my iMac. What a difference compared to the Apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It is so much nicer to type on, and the functionality of the MS mouse beats the Apple one button by far. I know about the mighty mouse, but it still feels cheap compared to the MS mouse.
Why is Apple so cheap about its keyboards? They make the best computer for the money, but ship it with a sub-standard keyboard and mouse. So now if I want to type comfortably and use a good mouse, I have to put up with RF instead of bluetooth, and the fact that they MS desktop set doesn't really match the iMac aesthetically. I dont want to have to trade off. I think Apple should provide form and function for $1299.

Those old "Battleship Potempkin" keyboards were awesome back in the day.
I bought out a school that was redoing their labs and had literally dozens of those in my garage along with some of the newer, smaller Keyboad IIs. I sold them off of eBay after I tested them and gave them a good cleaning. They went surprisingly fast.
There is a company that makes a modern keyboard with the same premium keyswitches of the AEKII, the Matias Tactile Pro Keyboard. I have read rave reviews of it, and for the price, it had better be good.

  • Can anyone explain why my Apple Wireless mouse annoyingly disconnects every 4 or 5 minutes or so? It then remains disconnected for about 20 seconds before reconnecting again? Batteries are good but at a loss ... worked fine for year!

Can anyone please explain why my Apple wireless mouse keeps disconnecting from my imac? The batteries are good and the mouse in good clean order. Never had an issue previoulsy but now every 4 or 5 minutes the mouse diconnects and takes 20 seconds or so to connect again. Anyone else experienced this one?
    Thanks
    Jon.

Some folk have reported a similar issue apparently caused by the batteries being a bit loose in their box. The suggested fix for that is to insert a thin piece of cardboard between the battery cover and the batteries.

  • Why does the Apple mouse drain so quickly?

I'm not sure if this question is in the right place. I bought a iMac back in January and I've been changing the batteries like every few weeks. My question is why does the mouse drain so quickly?
The batteries in the keyboard have been in there since I got the computer. I think I should buy a wired mouse and just plug it into the back of the iMac. I'm getting sick and tired of having to change the batteries so often.

    Hello:
Battery drain is a function of how much the device is used (no surprise to you).  I find that my mouse batteries last less - probably because I type so slowly, I use the mouse for anything I can.
Let me give you a suggestion based on my own experience.
I use rechargeable batteries and a 15 minute battery charger.  I currently have a drawer full of Energizer 2450 mAh rechargeable batteries and an Energizer 15 minute charger (works for AA and AAA batteries).  Rechargeables last less time than Lithium batteries - I think the reason is different voltages (1.2 vs 1.5).  I obtained all of the batteries and the charger - new - on eBay at a very reasonable price.
By using rechargeables, you are never without a fresh battery more than 15 minutes, and you are environmentally friendly to boot!

  • Apple Mouse: Reverse Wheel Button (why did they change it?)

    Hi All,
My Macbook just rebooted from Snow Leopard -> Lion upgrade. I also took the three updates after the upgrade.
Annoying as it sounds, my Apple mouse now scrolls in reverse. Scrolling the button away from the chair moves the screen to the bottom rather than the top, and vice-versa.
Any ideas on how to get the mouse to behave normally?
    Jeff

    Hey everyone,
The reason that apple calls this "Natural" scolling is because it is natural.  Take a sheet of paper and put it on you desk (yes, a real sheet of paper, not a virtual one and a real desk!).  Now try to move the paper and up and down against that surface.  You'll find that you have to move your fingers up to move the sheet up so that you can read futher down the sheet.  This is Natural and this is the thinking behind the iOS and the new "Natural Scrolling" that Apple has enabled.
It drove me nuts but once I realized what Apple was doing, it quite frankly does make more sense.  It took me about a month and now I wont' go back. I use the regularl scrolling at work on PC's and now I can transition without even thinking about it.
Basically think about it like you are moving the paper that the text is on and NOT the text itself (Or Web page). Then this type of scrolling will seem natural to you.
Conversly with traiditional scrolling you are moving the text up and now and not the paper behind it.

  • Why do I have to ask my MacBook pro 13" i7 to sync with my Apple Mouse at Start Up?

I've had my 13" MacBook Pro i7 for two days and have noticed that I have to go to the Preferences Panel to and ask the for the Bluetooth Apple mouse to be synced every time I start the laptop. I've never experienced this before with a Mac. I see nothing in preferences that addresses automatic syncing at startup.
    What am I missing?

Got it. Had to make it a favorite in the Bluetooth preferences. Clicked on the gear symbol in the bottom left corner and made it a favorite.

  • In Address Book, why does Apple let you create custom fields in the Template cards but not have them available for importing?

I open Address Book, go into Preferences, select Template and under the Names field (friend, assistant, father, etc) I add a custom field called "Principal".
I also add two more custom fields in the Email area.
Quit Address Book then relaunch. Add a new contact and the new custom fields, Principal, etc. are there. All good so far.
I have a Now Contact file with about 200 contacts in it. I export all fields as a Text file, Tab delimited. No problems there. With Address Book launched, select Import, pick the text file, leave Text Encoding on Automatic and click Open.
The window that shows the fields for Address Book and fields for the text file side by side opens. This is where you match up the correct fields for importing. If I go to one of the fields from the text file that I created a custom field for, click under the Address Book heading on the Do not import, scroll thru the Apple choices of fields, none of the custom fields show up. Only the original Apple ones are there. Why does Apple let you create them in the Template area but not have them available for importing? Does anyone have suggestions on getting around this?

While most likely not of interest to you, Spotlight can also tell you where the files it finds are located
Hover the mouse pointer over the name, and press Command-Option and the path to the file will be displayed.
As for opening a terminal session in the directory where a file is located, there is Applescripts that do just that as well as specific features in Lion/Mountain Lion terminal:

  • Apple Mouse Magic with Windows Vista

    Hello!
My computer is Windows Vista 32 bits.
I have bluetooth mouse "Apple Mouse Magic", I got to work on Windows Vista I installed the drivers, but every time I reboot or re-enter Windows does not recognize me, and I have to link each time the mouse with a program Bluetooth BlueSoleil.
Does anyone know how I can leave it linked to Windows Vista without using an intermediary the "BlueSoleil"?
I tried adding it through the bluetooth device but there's no framework for when the box "Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer" whenever I get the same error:
"Error while Windows save the settings. It is possible that the Bluetooth device is disconnected.
Do not keep the following configuration:
    -Configuration Discovery
    "Connection Settings"
    Can anyone help me?
    Thank you

In reality... probably. Why would you want it anyway? There are many many better mice out there.

  • ITunes Store: South Africa: Why is the store so limited?

Why is the store so limited with available Apps? Facebook Apps like Zynga games is unavailable. Angry birds is available from Blackberry for crying out loud but not iTunes South Africa.

This has been covered in many other threads. As reported by another SA user, Apple and the SA government are negotiating over how to apply Apple's iTunes Store age ratings to the SA regulations so as to allow more apps to be sold in the SA iTunes Store. Where those negoiations stand I don't know.

  • Apple Mouse (Bluetooth) Problem

I'm having problems with the tracking on my Bluetooth Apple Mouse and I was wondering if Apple has a manual on this mouse. There is at least one switch on there that I have no idea what it's about.
I've fiddled with it and gotten the tracking to work again. Other times it doesn't work. I have no idea what that switch is about.
Also, I've taken one of the batteries out and then back in again. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn't.
However, with a haphazard working of both of these things, and repeating them several times over again -- at some point I'll get it to working and tracking once again. I can't see any pattern to what is causing it to start working again -- other than just doing these things over and over again -- until it does.
Perhaps someone has the answers to the manual and/or how to get this tracking problem fixed.
    Best regards...
    iBook G4 1.42 GHz & iMac G4 Flat Panel 800 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Unfortunately, this could be any number of things.
One likely suspect is the batteries. If you're using
rechargeables, try good new regular ones for a while.
The rechargeables are 1.2 volts, regular AAs are
1.5. Sometimes that makes a difference.
I've thought of using those, but I don't. What I do -- though -- is take out one battery when I'm not using it. I don't use the mouse but every few days (or so), and maybe for up to a week or so. So, that way I figure I keep the battery in good shape.
Even brand new ones sometimes don't work, or don't
work right. Try cleaning the contacts in the mouse,
and the top and bottom of the batteries with alcohol,
acetone (carefully), or the like. Try other new
batteries. I've had brand-new ones test fine with a
volt meter, but just not work. Never did figure out
why. Others in the same pack were fine.
Well, I do carry a set of brand new ones, so that I'll be ready to replace them. And I've tried the new ones before, to see if that was the problem. I still encounter this kind of "tracking" problem. Now, mind you the "clicking" always works okay. So, I'm getting a Bluetooth connection always. However, it's only the tracking (and not the "clicking") that is not working. It's always that way without any variation (if there is any kind of problem at all).
Interference is another common problem. Airport,
cordless phones, etc., can interfere. Try turning
off everything you can find for a while. If you see
improvement, turn one at a time back on.
Now, I'll be (usually) in public places when I do use the mouse (like Starbucks or McDonalds), so that might be difficult to isolate any others that are using Bluetooth. However, I do use another Bluetooth device (but not at the same time). It's a Bluetooth GPS receiver. It always works (although it's the only bluetooth connected at the time).
If all else fails, I recommend a double Scotch.
Won't help, but you may not care!
Well..., it's irritating, but I can usually get it to working in about three to five minutes by taking the battery in and out and/or flipping that switch back and forth. It's never been any longer than about five minutes for me to get it to fully working again. But, since I've seen several others here mentioning this problem, it seems to me that it's some kind of hardware or software problem -- especially since the Bluetooth connection is made and is functioning with the mouse clicks (always without fail).
    Good luck.
Thanks -- but say..., do you know what that "switch" is -- underneath the battery cover?
    Best Regards...

  • Why did Apple remove the Hold-Menu/Backlight function?

I just updated to ipod software version 1.1.1 and wondering why the "Hold Menu to switch Backlight on/off" function was replaced with "Hold Menu to return to Main Menu" function???
Ive been a huge fan of the Menu-Backlight switch since my 4G ipod, as I prefer to always keep the Backlight off and use it only when I absolutely cannot read the screen. I find it saves significant battery life compared to even the 2 second Backlight Timer. In the dark, this function is very practical especially since performing a simple operation such as adjusting volume or skipping tracks doesnt require any backlight. Also, I take a dark ghetto commuter bus and try hard to not draw attention to my 5G ipod with a bright glow from within my jacket pocket.
Why cant Apple offer an option in Settings menu or an alternative version with different Hold-Menu functionality?

Well the beauty of the old Hold-Menu>Backlight function was that it was basically a quick on/off switch...light turns on...light turns off...whereas the new "Quick Return to Main Menu" function didnt really solve a problem. If you need to get return to the main menu, you can blindly press Menu repeatly until you reach the main menu, how hard is that? Also, you only need to press Menu a maximum 4 times to reach the Main Menu from any submenu (unless youve created multiple subfolder hiearchies within the Notes folder.
My point is, as a result of elimination of the Backlight "switch" is increased precise navigation, which equals a loss in usability and practicality. So what happens when you suddenly need to use backlight? You either prepare in advance, lets say everyday before you head home from the office, you need to remember to set the Backlight Timer on. Or you face the scenario where it gets kinda dark by the time you leave the office, but you forgot to turn on the Backlight Timer...now what? Well look for some well lit place to change the settings, or if you can blindly navigate to the main menu and scroll carefully and precisely to the Backlight option. Ok a little extreme but I hope some of you reading this GET it.
So far the only way to retain this practical function is reverting to or continue using ipod software version 1.0. The most annoying thing about continuing to run v1.0 is everytime you connect the ipod to the computer, theres a popup begging you to update the ipod software. By refusing to update, you will miss out on some bug fixes (esp for Videora converted videos) and the volume limiter function.
Show your support for the lost Menu-Backlight function and maybe Apple will hear us out.

  • Why does my mouse move slowly?

Why does my mouse move slow?

Check the setting for tracking speed. You'll find that in System Preferences > Mouse.
Note that tracking speed has variable accelleration associated with it; it responds to the speed of the mouse movement as well as the distance. When the tracking speed is set to fast, a slow movement of the mouse will yield an approximate one-to-one response from the cursor; but if you flick the mouse quickly, the cursor will fly across thre screen.
If you're using a non-Apple mouse, and it came with its own software, check in that control pane for a similar setting.
