Why is Apple's Address Book widget looking outdated?

I've the latest updates on my new iMac, but I noticed that the standard Address Book widget that comes with Dashboard looks outdated. You have to type in a name to get it working, no arrows. On the Mac at work this widget is dynamic and easy to flip through. Even on apple.com it shows the cool looking one. Strangely enough the boring looking one is version 1.1 and the cool looking one at work is an older version 1.0.2. Is this a design update mistake? Has anyone else noticed this? How do I fix this?
I'll appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
-Mike

Dutchy, it looks like that is the way it is supposed to look now. If you would like it the other way in a future release, you can go to the Mac OS X tab above and then Feedback to make your suggestion to Apple. Otherwise you might look for a widget that does what you like, or better yet, create your own.

  • Importing Netscape's address book into Apple's Address Book application

I want to import my email Netscape email address book into Apple's Address Book application. So I open the Address Book application and select import from the pull down menu. That brings up three choices, vCards, LDIF and Text. I previously had saved my Netscape address book as a pdf file. So I selected, Text. A window appeared from which I was to select where I wanted to get the file from. I made selections until I got to where my pdf file was and selected it. But I got the following error message.
The file you selected does not appear to be a valid comma separated values (csv) file nor a valid tab delimited file, please choose another file.
So I tried again and this time I selected LDIF, but when the file in my Netscape Users Profile that would appear to be my address book came up, it was “greyed out” and I could not select it. The file had the name “abook.mab”. It is not an LDIF file. There are no LDIF files in my profile.
So I tried selecting vCards, but I got the exact same results as above. The file that looks like it is my address book, is grayed out and cannot be selected.
So I went into Netscape to see if I could export my address book into Apple’s Address Book. I chose export from the Netscape menu and a window opened asking me to select where I wanted to export the file to. But when I got to Apple’s Address Book application, it was greyed out and could not be selected. The same thing happened when I tried to select Apple’s Mail program.
I have about three hundred email addresses in my Netscape address book. If these addresses have to be manually entered into Apple's Address Book, I will not make the switch to Apple's Mail program.

Netscape's Address Book window does not have that option. The Export option is under the Tools menu, but does not give you any options in the Tools menu. Once you select Export, the Export Address Book window opens. This window does have a format option where you can select either LDIF, Comma Separated or Tab Delimited. But it doesn't matter which of those I select, Apple's Address Book and Mail applications are not available for selection.

  • No link to the Address Book application from Address Book Widget?

Before I could click the little red button, but with the new (10.4.4) widget, is there a way to launch the Address Book application?
    1.5 GHz PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I don't think there is a way to launch the Address Book app with the new 10.4.4 widget like we could before. I noticed that right away and went to the Mac OS X Feedback page to report it. If it bugs you as much as it bugs me you should report it too.
Here's the link just to make it easy:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
I like the new design ("front end") of the 10.4.4 Address Book widget, but I immediately missed the handy red button. I hope we see that feature reintroduced in the next update.

  • Address book widget

After the new updates I really miss that little red button that would take me to the actual address book. Anyone know if I can reinstall / use the older address book widget? Or get the button back?

I totally agree. If you have a version of 10.4.3 handy, you can copy the widget from there, which is what I did. (/Library/Widgets)
MacOSXHints also describes a method for the calendar that should work with Address Book too. Here's a link:

The second comment talks about retrieving the widget from a Tiger install DVD.
I've been trying to get a "Red Button" into the new Address Book, but Apple went and made it difficult.
If any of the widget developers read these forums, could someone please put the 'displayedUID()' function back into the AddressBookPlugin? It seems nearly identical to the old plugin, minus that function and plus additional search functions.
Or if anyone knows how to unpackage the AddressBookPlugin that would help too.

  • URL hyperlinks won't work from Address Book widget.

Whenever I click on a web address in my Address Book widget, Dashboard disappears but nothing opens in my browser. When I click on an email address, it works just fine. It's just the web URLs that don't work. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions re: how to get this working?

Well, I just figured out that URLs that begin with "http://" actually work. Unfortunately, I have a few thousand contacts without that in the URL. Anyone know of a script or anything that will go through Address Book and add it to the URLs?

In Mail.app, try pulling down the File menu and select the "import mailboxes" item.

  • Address book widget stuck

Quite often after doing a search using address book widget the next search won't work - I cannot type anything in the search field and I get the keyboard bleep as if I am doing something wrong. Anyone know what's going on?
    Cheers!
    Phil

    Hi Phil,
Did you ever solve your stuck address book widget? I just got Tiger and am experiencing the same problem. I've discovered I can remove & reinstall the widget, but that is terribly boring.

  • Importing AOL Address Book into Apple's Address Book

    Hi everyone,
Does anyone know the best way to export AOL's address book and import it into Apple's Address Book?

  • Is there a way to use Apple Mail/Address Book/Calendar with a Microsoft Exchange Server that requires a client certificate ?

I have an Exchange server configured to require a client certificate. Is there a way to configure a certificate for Apple Mail/Address Book/Calendar ? There seems to be no option in the account settings to do that (in contrast to for example the IMAP settings).
    Any help highly appreciated !

I don't know. Try downloading the certificate and installing it in your keychain. See what happens.

  • Why cant I connect address book to more than one email account.

Why cant I connect address book to more than one email account I have 3 but can only do this for my icloud account ??  I am using the correct pass word but still no joy ????

I bought an iPhone 3G this morning (wahoo!), and can confirm that I have setup both an IMAP (for my home server) and an exchange server (for work).
Exchange is set to push email (so will get email as it arrives) and IMAP is currently set to manual, and is working like a charm.. With multiple accounts you get to set one as the preferred which it will default to when composing (but you can change the accounts on the compose screen)
Only minor annoyance is signature is shared between both accounts, other than that am loving it!

  • Outlook Sync Apple Mail/Address Book/Calendar

Anyone knows if Syncing outlook's mail, calendar and address book with Apple Mail, Address Book and iCal is a possible task? I have tried it but one of the machines will ask if i want to erase all data and sync with current system (using iPhone).
What i want to achieve is to sync my work PC and my home MAC so i can constantly work from both locations without having to bring my laptop home. I like to get my work done at night and get everything ready for next day. So when i get to office, i can simply sync my calendar, tasks, and appointments and get to work without having to re-enter the data.

I don't know. Try downloading the certificate and installing it in your keychain. See what happens.

  • My iCloud account is syncing mobile me address book versus apple id address book...how can I change this?

My icloud account is syncing my mobile me address book vs. my apple id address book.  How do I change this?

You have to delete the old account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Is HP Device Manager Supporting Apple Contacts (Address Book) in OS X Yosemite when computer faxing?

    Hi,
I am trying to select best possible printer for our small office which will let us use os x's power and integritiy to do a lot with less effort. Hp Office Jet Pro X576 and 8630 look very promising to me.
As a power user, recent mac switcher I was digging hp support forums to make clear if Apple Contacts (Yosemite 10.10, former Address Book) supported in Hp Device Device Manager when Faxing. I have found some shared screenshots but no Apple Contacts icon available near fax options dialogue boxes.
Imagine that I have 4000 contacts on my mac those nearly all have fax numbers along with emails. Based on legal and business purposes faxing is essential to us. Finally, I wouldn't like to enter fax number manually every time faxing.
    Thanks

  • I just got my first mac and can anyone tell me how to change my address book to look like an actual book?

Just got my first Mac and cant find how to change the appearance of my address book.  Can anyone help?

Check out the built-in Address Book Help guide on your Mac (in Address Book, choose Address Book Help from the Help menu.  I dont think you can change the way the address book looks in terms of changing its appearance to look more book like, but I could be wrong.  I checked out a few google searches and did not find anything that stated how to do what you are asking.  If you find you cant change it to your desired specifications, you can always make the suggestion to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
