Why is audio sync such a problem??

A year after learning from this forum about 16 bit audio my biggest problem has been, and still is, AUDIO SYNC !
Here is the latest oddity and any comments would be appreciated:
2 months ago I did a one hour wedding tape in 16 bit. With 90 gig free I brought it into iMovie for a very minor rough edit and then shared it back to tape. The resulting tape was out of audio sync but after black recording the first minute of tape and repeating the process it was back in sync??? Think it was a fluke? Guess again. I purchased 2 cams at the same time and gave one to my son. His 80 min video of the same wedding was on 2 tapes the first of which gave me the same result with the same successful redo. So on the 20 min tape I did the 1 min of black first and it was in sync on the first try. I suspect something to do with the amount of time for cam to get ready and the amount of black selected in front??? How does one determine the best delay time and black time when setting up a 'Share to Camcorder' and has this happened to others?

Hi Arthur:
Has it happened to others? You betcha...including yours truly.
#1-
I just answered one of your posts regarding extracting audio. I presume you ask because you know that if you extract the audio from the video prior to sharing back to tape, it will help sync the Audio and video together.
In the mean time (tho you have probably already read these..)
http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/audio/1001.shtml
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42974
#2-You have a Sony D8 TRV350...before you 'Share' from iMovie to the Camera, Do the following:
*Highlight one audio clip by clcking on it
*Go to Edit > Select All
*Then go to Advanced > Lock Audio at Playhead
(This will make all of you audio 'Lock' the beginning of each audio clip to each video clip)
*Then-while everything is still highlighted-take your mouse and hold it down while you click on the first video clip and gently slide it to the right about one little spacer on the timeline. This will move all of your video and locked audio together and leave a little 'slug' at the beginning of your movie.
That's just another way to be sure, once your are finished and wanting to share to tape or VHS, that your camera or recorder will has sufficient time to get ready to record.
And there is always the "Add __ second to beinning of video" or at __seconds of Black"..options when you share.
I really hope this was understandable!

  • So frustrating that nobody knows why. Audio Sync issue.

I have an imovie project of old family footage that was ported over from VHS through a sony dcr pc120e mini dv cam straight through to intel imac via firewire. The imovie project is flawless and the sound is perfectly in sync. ive exported to idvd and when finished the audio is out of sync on the final disk. Now i have been reading about this issue and see that people blame idvd8 but it happens when i make a dvd with my imovie project using toast titanium 9 too. Surely if it plays perfectly as an imovie project there must be a way of transferring to dvd without audio sync issues. If anyone knows a solution or piece of software that will remedy this please please let me know as i have wasted about 12 dvds in various experiments.

camcorder on 16bit, i am using a vhs player attacthed to camera then firewire to imac, ... the imovie project is perfect in everyway. Everything is pal. Yes i did export to QT within IM and this was also out of sync.
thanks for answering some of my Qs ...
there's one thing, I do suspect, which was a 'source' for sync-weirdness for years.. which is the AUDIO connected to some video.
you told us, video is 25fps, and audio is included 16bit (which is good...)
I assume, adding some NON-conform audio could cause trouble... (as a 12bit audio would cause outofsynciness) .. we do know very little about, how iM08 handles audio+video internally, we 'Silverbacks' had long discussions about really weird side effects as a 'zooming' of dvfiles on export etc. I wouldn't be surprised, if adding some non-iTS, non-48kHz-aiff, non-whatever... causes such an effect.
so, please answer my audio Q from above: source, format, bitrate...?
and just for curiosity: how long is your project in total? hh:min:sec?
    ==edit==
pops into mind: in iM vers3, there was some 'bug', concerning PAL wrong audio and NTSC good audio ... wow < scratching bald head > .. try to contact some wiseguy with better memory..

  • Audio sync pro tools problem

Has anyone had any experience importing audio tracks into Logic 8 that were originally done in another studio on a P.C.(YUK!) IN Pro Tools.
I am currently struggling with this and I am having terrible problems getting things to stay in sync. The general tempo is also a bit slower which I find really weird.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

    YUK?
Hmmm... even a beginning PC DAW user would be smart enough to at least take an educated guess as to the problem.
I am currently struggling with this and I am having terrible problems getting things to stay in sync. The general tempo is also a bit slower which I find really weird.
And how about pitch, if the audio is playing back at a slower tempo is the pitch slightly lower as well?

  • Why is iCloud syncing such a disaster? How can I fix?

I have two Macs and an iPhone. I have a separate iCloud account (separate from my iTunes/App Store account) for iCloud syncing. Until now, I have never had this working properly in any way:
    - Keychain syncing doesn't work at all. Both macs have a different set of keywords in their iCloud Keychain, new passwords are (sometimes) added to both, existing passwords do not sync at all.
    - Contacts syncing does not work at all. I have a set of Contacts on my iPhone. Even resetting iCloud Contact syncing on the Mac does not get them. I finally got them because it turned out that when System Preferences thinks Contacts are synced, Contacts.app itself has no idea about that account. Add the account to Contacts.app and in your System Preferences Contacts syncing is turned off. etc.
What is needed is that Apple fixes this, also in the current OS versions. And what I need is some sort of manual to get this unstable mess in working order.
(I am clearly frustrated, I've been wrestling with this for ages and ages and ages and I have better things to do than wrestling with Apple's unstable implementation of a good idea).

My first instruction may well be exactly what you've done but I want to ensure that we're talking about the same thing.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • Why is iPhoto copy such a problem?

Trying to back up my 500 gig iPhoto library to an external drive.  I got an error saying "not all of your library was copied because it couldn't be read or written". Copied over 500 gig in 14 hours. Rebuilt library.  Tried again, but now takes 5 days?  It's going so slowly that I doubt it will ever happen.  Running Lion 10.7.5 with iLife '11.
    Thanks
    Steve

    How are you copying it?
How much free space on your main drive and on the external drive?
You may want to use clone software like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner
BTW - that is a big iPhoto library - I ahve 50,000 photos and mine is only about 265 GB

  • Video audio sync problems resolved

I've solved my audio syncing with video problems.  Maybe it will help you find your solution.
I recently installed Leap Motion but it said I needed to update my video driver.  I thought my driver was up to date so for both my computers that had different video cards I updated and the syncing issues were gone.
So as far as helping you get the right update I won't be of much help.  But at least this will give everyone a direction to look in and find their own solution.
I hope this helps and good luck!

    Hi there
In addition to what Leslie offered (which is good advice) I've seen others report success by staging the audio to begin slightly after the slide starts. Perhaps .3 .4 or .5 seconds into each slide.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Problems with Audio Sync and Rendering

In both problems what happens is NOT consistent. If were, would think was a setting or something I was doing wrong.
About the rendering problem. I capture either through FCP Log and Capture or through my analog to digital "box", Formac Studio TVR. In both cases record in DV setting. When I then Import these files about 3 out of 4 times they need full rendering. But doing all things the same, there is that 1 out of 4th time where no rendering is needed at all. Does not seem to matter whether I capture through FCP or Foremac. Results seem the same. Like I said to begin with, if was consistent would figure that is just how the program is. But due to the time it takes to do a render, sure would be nice if could be avoided some way.
Regarding the Audio Sync. At times, maybe 1 out 10 times, the audio is bad. It begins at the beginning of the film being out of sync maybe two or three frames. But then every 10 minutes of film it progressively get's worse, losing a good 6 to 10 frames as one goes. I can fix by doing a lot of cutting and then moving the film around till it is in sync again, but as you can imagine takes a LOT of extra work. Any ideas as to why this is happening and what could be done to prevent in future??
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I've used flip4mac for about a year and have had no problems with it. I mostly use it to export preview versions for windoze people. The quality is very good, though it takes significantly longer to export than a similar-quality quicktime movie.

  • Audio sync problem after scrubbing

I'm trying to piece together some clips from a TV series called Legend of the Seeker. I'm using Premiere CS4 4.0.1, Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
Placing the hour-long video in the Source Editor allows me to play the video fine from beginning to end, but if I start scrubbing through the file, the audio unsyncs itself immediately.
Here's a screenshot of the video in GSpot:
    http://img14.imageshack.us/my.php?image=premieresync.jpg
Setting IN and OUT points and then dragging a very small clip into the timeline has the same result.
Any ideas would be very appreciated.

You are actually pretty lucky to just have Audio sync problems, though I do not know why scrubbing would make any difference. With both Xvid and DivX one more often gets no Audio, or no Video.
Agree 100% on the 3rd party conversion, prior to Import into PrPro.

  • Weird audio sync problems with Zoom H4n?

We are adding a voice-over track to a Keynote presentation - using the inboard mic in a MacBook Pro.
We are simultaneously recording the voice-over with an Audio Technika mic plugged into a Zoom H4n - recording at 48/24.
We export the Keynote to a ProRes LT Quicktime movie - outputting the sound as 48k/24 bit
I'm not sure what Keynote is recording the original voice at (and I'm thinking that may be my problem).
I bring the ProRes LT Quicktime movie into FCP Studio and try to sync up the Zoom Audio.  And it doesn't stay in sync.  Here is the odd thing.  When you look at the waveforms in the audio files, they are exactly in the same place ... but by the end of the 45 minutes the actual audio is WAY out, seconds out.  It doesn't make sense to me that the audio waveform is identical, and the sound is delayed on the Zoom track.
Technically, the ProRes and the Zoom audio tracks are 48/24.  The only unknown is what Keynote records at.  I'm suspecting it's probably 44/16.  Which could be my problem.  But doesn't explain why the audio waveforms are identical (and on one the audio is actually delayed).
    Any ideas?
    all ears, Ben

Thanks for the reply. I don't have time for this. is it time to switch to a different editor?

  • Audio sync problem downloading VHS-C

I've downloaded a straight VHS tape (with no audio sync problems) into final cut pro once I had changed the Camera setting to 32Khz and the capture and sequeence presets to 32khz as well (it was all aout of sync when the settings were 48Khz).
The problem now, which is driving me MAD, is I have 13 hours of VHS-C tapes, which I have put into a VHS cassette converter to download and the audio is out of sync. The capture presets are the same as above (i.e. 32KHZ) . Why is this? I downloaded them initially at 48Khz (settings on the camera 48Khz and FCP at 48Khz in capture and sequence settings), but this was also out of sync.
Why is it different from one VHS tape to a VHS-C tape?
I hope there is a God out there that can help with this one?
    Thanks!

    Eagleray:
    I capture through a ADVC-100.
I use to find the same problem playing VHS tapes with a standard VHS player from time to time and never solved it. The out of sync audio appears when capturing some specific tapes from specific sources:
    - All my home tapes recorded in my old VHS recorder shows a audio problem; not specifically out of sync, but some audio "cracks" from time to time, like an electronic noise. No way to find a capture setings that works.
    - Some customers VHS tapes that showed the out of sync (no noises) and again, no combination of digitalizer settings made it works. Had to resync the audio editing and stretching in an external audio editor or cutting shorts parts and syncing them with video. The our of sync appears in small captured portions, like 10 min or so.
    - Never found a sync or audio problem capturing from VHC-C (the small VHS tapes) playing them with the tape adapter in the player.
I google long hours about this problems and all that I learned is that some old VHS recorders had not a "synchro" signal in the tape.
As I told you, I don't use any pro VHS deck, just my consumer "state of the art" VHS home recorder.
I hope there is a God out there that can help with this one?
I don't think HE visit these forums.

Try creating a new project and importing all the slides from

  • FCE and QT PRO Analog Capture Audio sync problems

I have had major problems importing analog content into a DV quicktime movie and having the audio match.
First example: using a sony digital 8 camera with old hi-8 tapes (the camera does the analog to digital conversion) I open final cut express HD capture now or new movie recording in QT pro, and go for the whole tape or tv show. beginning is usually ok, but if i stop and start the camera, fast forward through commercials while capturing, or let the source end before i stop the capture It seems the audio becomes un-synced. usually lags by 1 sec or so, but sometimes the audio comes early by a few frames. sometimes progressivly getting worse later in the capture, sometimes the whole thing is off by the same amount. If i capture between camera starts and stops i have no problems.
Second example: using a pyro AV firewire analog converter, I get the same behavior when trying to capture in Final cut Express HD and QT pro.
My guess is that since there is no timecode on the analog source that somehow messes things up, but why do these programs shift the audio on me?

Most likely cause is your photographer changed the audio rate from 44.1k or 48k to something else.
Aside from that, no, it's highly unlikely it is the software. It's easy to blame FCP for this stuff, and we love to do it, but the capture from DV over FW is a complete clone of a digital file, nothing is being changed by FCP or QT during the process, unless your settings have been tweaked and that's a user decision.
If simply sliding the audio back into sync is not an option, dub the tapes to another DV deck via FW (producing a clone, not a generational loss) and capture form the dubs. You can experiment with a short take or two.
If the audio sync issue persists, it's the original footage, not FCP.

  • Audio sync problem with videos imported from iPod Touch

I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation that I used to shoot video at a family birthday party. When I imported the footage into iMovie '11, the audio is not in sync with the video (video is about two seconds behind audio) and there is only the left channel of audio. I verified that the video on the iPod plays just fine--no audio sync problem, both left and right channels work. I just upgraded to iOS 5 on the iPod Touch. The iMac is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
As a workaround, I can import the video into iPhoto instead. When I play the video in iPhoto, there are no audio sync problems and both channels of audio can be heard. I have imported other iPod Touch videos successfully into iMovie '11 in the past few months, but this has been the first time these problems have occurred. Any help would be appreciated.

Premiere cannot handle clips with variable framerate.
Your converted clips need to have constant framerate.
Otherwise use a converter like Handbrake.

  • Major "BUG" in Imovie 9 - Audio Sync Problem on Export  !

Well I'm a hard-core Apple user from day one, but unfortunately today I'm not to proud about the latest version of Imovie 9.
It seems there has been a "MAJOR audio sync problem on export" in Imovie 9, since July 2009. Apple knows about this bug for a long time now, but didn't release any bugfix yet!
    Here's what it's all about:
It seems if you use the (custom /manual) speed-adjustments and not the preset slider speeds, you will experience (after exporting your movie) annoying bursts of audio from clips that had been set to mude. The strange thing is that you will only experience this audio-bug after exporting, you will NOT experience it in the project playback mode!
    Here's what you can do:
Find ALL the clips in your Project that are Speed Adjusted.
Instead of using a "Custom Speed" percentage, use any of the "Preset Speeds"
    Preset Speeds on the Slider = 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%
Then, export your project as usual.
    No more sync issues.
Really hope That Apple will come up with a real BUGFIX soon.
It's a shame that a major bug in a otherwise GREAT PRODUCT, hasen't been fixed yet!
What's wrong with Apple?...this is not one of their finest hours.
Still A BIG fan from Imovie HD,...I'll chance to Imovie 9 when the bugs are finaly fixed!

This is TERRIBLE! I have spent so much time working on this project, and I really don't want to adjust the speed settings to the preset levels, BECAUSE I need to motion of the video to match certain musical points. I can't re-film my video, and I needed this project done TODAY. I made a music video with some kids at summer camp, and today is the last day- the day we were supposed to all watch it together, and now, I've got NOTHING!!!! (Because I can't export it without all those glitches!)
I am MAJORLY DISAPPOINTED on this one. I've made movies in windows movie maker before, and purposely used imovie, because you know, everything on macs is supposed to be better. Well, I guess I was wrong.
