Why is audition recording the stereo tracks unequally?

I just upgrade to 3.0 from 1.5 and I must say I have been racking my brain for hours trying to figure out all my problems. I found most by scrolling old posts but this one I cant find. After installing the program I opened a beat in the first track of multiview. I tried recording and I was having latency issues so I took the advice that popped up in a message prompting me to switch to ASIO drivers. I opened the audio hardware tab and selected my mic (02s) (samsung C01U). Now, when I record in stereo the volumes dont record evenly. The left ear records just a little bit louder then the right ear. On the bottom where the mic level are the top bar stays a precise amount away from the lower bar (about 2 inches). So when I record, the top level (left ear) records normal and the bottom level (right ear) in considerable lower. Doesn't sound good. I know I could equalize it using effects but I want it to record evenly. Anyone know how to fix this. I have VIA High Def Sound Card (I think...thats what it says under device manager) and windows 7. I was messing with the settings in my ASIO4ALL control panel trying to fix the latency issues so maybe I screwed something up there. What default setting should I put in the boxes in the ASIO4ALL control panel?

Yes.
Do people record into mono mics often or do most people use stereo mics? Also why would stereo record equally in 1.5 but not in 3.0?
All microphones are essentially mono. If you have two of them closely adjacent but pointing in different directions in one casing (aka a 'stereo' mic), you will get some sort of stereo from them - depending on how good they are. The vast majority of people use mono mics for single voices though - there is no benefit from using a stereo one for this at all. And there is absolutely zero benefit in recording a mono mic in stereo - it just wastes file space, because both channels will contain absolutely identical information. In fact using a stereo mic pair for recording a single voice is counter-productive - you end up using the variable part of the mic's polar pattern on both mics (not so good), and the slightest physical movement of the vocalist shifts the sound in the mix considerably. This is way easier to control with a single mono mic - the only determinant of where it sounds in the mix is the pan control.
The reason you are experiencing a difference has nothing to do with Audition at all, but everything to do with using a different driver. The present driver for your mic only outputs signal on one channel in stereo mode - which is pretty ridiculous; it shouldn't even have a stereo mode!  What you should do is select a mono input - which will say something like [01m] on it in Audition, and use that to record, using the pan control to position the sound in the mix.
In a properly set up stereo monitoring system, a mono source wil appear in a single (vurtual) location between the speakers, depending on where the pan control is set. If this doesn't happen on your setup, then you need to fix the acoustic conditions around the speakers so that it does, otherwise you won't have the faintest clue about what your mixes really sound like.
I'm sorry that this all sounds a bit harsh, but I'm afraid that this is the way it is...

  • Can I record two stereo tracks at once in Logic 9.1.1?

I've read many people's arguments as to why one may or may not want to do this, but I do - to replicate a specific effect. My only question (really) is: if it can be done, how?
In PT, I just press record enable on the two tracks, and I am recording as I'd like - in Logic 9.1.1 I have yet to discover if, or how.....
I've tried a number of arbitrary key commands when clicking on the second track's "record enable" button, but to no avail.
    Many thanks for your replies

Why? Copying afterwards would yield the +exact same result.+
However, you can record two files at once: Create two audio tracks, the first takes the actual input and has its output set to say *Bus 29,* the second track has Bus 29 as an input, now you can record both tracks.
You can also use bus 13, 17 or 23. Or any other not yet in use.

  • How to play back one channel of the stereo track in both headphone cans?

I recorded two microphones in one stereo track. Is there some way I could listen to the left channel and then to the right channel in both cans in my headphones, like a mono track? Panning moves all sound to the left can or the right one in my headphones. But I'd like to listed Left channel as mono channel in both headphone cans, and then press some button and listen to the right channel in both cans. How can I do it?

No problem. By the way, there is a wrinkle in Logic that you may not be aware of.
When dealing with a stereo track, the knob in the channel strip that you may think of as a Pan knob is not. It's a Balance knob. What is does is to change the level of what's in either left or right channel but does NOT move the left signal to the right or vice versa.
    To prove this:
    * Create a project with two mono audio tracks
    * Put different files on each track
    * Pan one hard left, the other hard right
    * Bounce the result
    * Create a new project with a stereo audio track
    * Import the audio that you exported above
    * Use the Balance Knob to bring either up or down
    * Note you cannot move one signal from its original position
If you want to pan a stereo signal, you have to use the insert: Imaging > Direction Mixer. Only then can you position a stereo signal in your stereo field. This is documented in the user manual in the section called: "Setting the Pan, Balance, or Surround Position".
    Have fun!

  • Is there a way in iTunes to separate the stereo tracks and play just one side?

Files that I have can be played so that you hear one of the two stereo tracks of a song. So far I have not been able to figure out a way to do this in iTunes. Does anyone know how to do this? Is this a lost cause?

    It's a lost cause.
I sould add that Quicktime has a left/ right control.

  • Why did apple remove the combine tracks option in importing settings

itunes for windows 7. APPLE took away the combine tracks option in import settings, why?

I can't see all of the screen - are the tracks ordered by track number?  If so, then the "Join Tracks" option should be available to you.  If you follow this sequence of operations (with apologies if this seems tediously obvious ...):
    insert CD
wait for track info to appear
click on the heading of the column containing track numbers (normally this will be ordered sequentially, first to last, and the column will have a "^" symbol in the heading:
The track order should now be reverse (highest to lowest), with a down arrow symbol in the heading
Click on the column heading a second time - this will ensure that tracks really are in correct sequential order
Now hold down SHIFT and select the first of the tracks you want to join followed by the last of the tracks you wish to join.  One set of tracks should now be highlighted.
    Click on Options
If you're still not seeing the "Join Tracks" option then there may be an underlying issue that'll require further investigation.

  • How do I keep a record of the last track played in an album?

I have a lot of albums which have many completely individual pieces of music. For example Chopin ballades. I may only listen to a single track and not return to that album for several months. Is there a way to record the last track played in an album that show up next time the album is open? I'm thinking of something like the little blue arrow that shows which track is now playing.

For the Last Played column to make any sense, you need to click on the Last Played title itself, so that an arrow appears in the title, pointing down. If it points up, simply click on it a second time and it will point down. This puts everything in "last played" order, with the most recent played at the top of the list.
You cannot see the Last Played information on your iPhone, but a Smart Playlist may help. In this respect, an iPhone is just like an iPod Touch, and almost the same as an iPod Classic.
To create your style of Smart Playlist in iTunes (which is then Synced to your iPhone), make a note of the following:
         A.  Album name (copy it, ready to paste into step 4, below.)
         B.  The number of "plays" times you're going to set. For example, if most tracks have been played twice, and some only once, and you want to begin by playing only the tracks that have been played once, then choose "2". (It will make sense, in steps 7 & 8.)
    Now perform the following steps:
Click on File/New Smart Playlist (on the top menu bar)
In the dialogue box that appears, change "Artist" to Album (from the drop-down menu)
Change "contains" to is (from the drop-down menu)
In the empty box, type (or paste) in the name of the album (it must be exactly the same, no errors. That's why I suggested copy-and-paste.)
Click on the + symbol at the end of the current line (this creates a new line)
Change "Artist" to Plays (from the drop-down menu)
Change "is" to is less than (from the drop-down menu)
In the third field, which probably has a 0 in it, replace the zero with 2 (the number you decided in the preparation step B, above)
Leave all the other boxes and fields as they are. (You may notice that the very first one at the top, has changed. This is normal, it now reads "match all the following rules".)
    Click on OK.
The Smart Playlist should be automatically given the name of the "album name" field from line 1. You can change it if you wish, to whatever you prefer. It will contain only the tracks from your chosen album that have been played less than twice.
If the Playlist is not in track order, simply add the Track No. column to this Playlist and click on the title bar (as before) to make "track no." the decider. Then Sync your iPhone to iTunes.
Here's a list I prepapred. Notice only the eight songs that have been played less than four times, are shown. The other eight songs have all been played at least four times:
Notice too, that my track order is correct, and that the priority column is the "number" column on the left.
Finally; when the list empties out because all tracks have been played three times, simply edit the Smart Playlist to is less than "3".

  • Recording a class of 30 kids singing to a guitar track I laid down on Garage Band. Severe distortion because they have to hear the guitar track through a set of speakers..

I had a big setback today on a project I've been working on.  I recently made my first recording of my own playing and singing, a guitar track and a vocal track of a children's song.  When I recorded the guitar track, it took me a whole day to get it right.  I used the metronome through earbuds.  Then I listened to the guitar track and sang into a Snowball mike to get the vocal track down.  Played separately or together, they came out crisp, clear, no dostortion.  I made a CD of the song by sending the song to iTuines, with and without my voice so the children could practice to it.  I taught the song to 30 fifth graders so I could add a vocal track of them singing.  My plan is to use it as the music for a slideshow I'm making for their elementary graduation.  I'm a mom, not their teacher.  The teachers of the two classrooms have been generous in letting me teach the kids the song, and setting up 45 minutes for me to record it.  Did the recording of the kids today at the school.  Two tracks of all 30 kids doing their very best to cooperate.  They sang well.  I opened the garage Band file at home and it is such poor quality audio that it is UNUSABLE.  There's a lot of fuzz and distortion.  I can probably get their teachers to let me have them again to give it another try, but I better get it right. When I recorded my own voice to the guitar track, I monitored using earbuds.  I can't hook 30 kids up to my Macbook with earbuds. I played the guitar track from speakers and held the microphone out toward them, so the mike was between the speakers and the kids. The speakers and mike both faced the kids.  They sang really well, so it was pretty disappointing to find the recording sounded so bad.  My guitar teacher tried to help me figure out what to do, but he thinks it is going to be very tricky to get it right since the kids have to hear the guitar track to sing it.  I'm considering playing the CD I made of the guitar track from a boom box behind the kids and just recording the kids on a separate project file and losing the ability to edit, and probably losing most of the guitar quality and volume.  But I won't know if it works until I have 30 kids and 2 teachers and all my gear set up to actually try it.  Whatever I do, it has to work on my next try.  There's very little time left and no budget.  I thought my Macbook Pro and the Snowball, purchased at the Apple Store, would be enough.
    Please advise.  Thanks.

Very difficult recording situation. I would probably just record the kids with you playing live guitar.
You could do the boombox with the kids and set it up so the kids hear the guitar but try to get as little as possible of the prerecord guitar on the the track. Then either mix the kids recording with the original guitar track or add a guitar track to the kids track later.
When you do the recording of the kids bring headphones to monitor levels. Also make sure you're happy with the track before you leave the school.

  • When Recording a new track, previous track is copied to the new track as well

I have an Audigy 4 Pro. I am experiencing a problem when I try to record a multi-track project. I have a microphone plugged into the "Line-In 1/Mic In" input. I can record the first track fine, but when I record the second track, the audio from track one is copied onto track two along with the new audio. This occurs in both Cubase LE and Magix Music Studio 11. I am following the software instructions very closely, so I don't think the problem is there. It seems to me that the Audigy is probably mixing the playback signal with the input signal before sending it to the recording software, but I don't know how to correct this. I am wearing headphones, so the track one audio is not being picked up by the microphone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're propably using non native ASIO drivers w/ .rec source set to "What U Hear" or native ASIO drivers w/ rec source set to "Mix L".
Use native Craetive ASIO drivers (you should have there Creative ASIO, SB Audigy 4 ASIO and SB Audigy 4 24/96 ASIO to select from) and set input to "Mic n" for microphone, "Analog Mix L" for line source.
There are some explanation on ASIO drivers (it's made for Audigy 2 Plat eX but, I suppose it's about the same w/ A4 too.) behind link -->
    http://forums.creative.com/creativel...essage.id=1726
You can also use below settings for microphone when using CT ASIO:
Also, on Cubase LE, remember switch the Input Monitoring (speaker button on every track header) "ON" when recording and switch it OFF when playback/mixing.

  • When I record a second track, garageband will record the first one again, even if I'm with headphones on. How can I stop it?

That's really annoying, because I can't put an effect in the second track, once that the part of the first track that's together will be changed too. And it happens with a third track, and so on, the other tracks will be together with the track i just have recorded.
If anybody could help me, I'd be really grateful.
P.S.: it only happens with the audio recorder, and it didn't happen before.

I'm using GB 1.4 for Ipad 4, my IOS is 6.1.3, and the only mic is the one of the Ipad.
That's exactly the point: I'm recording the second track and the audio of the first one is appearing in the background, but the music is only being played through the headphones, and there is no way for the audio recorder be listening to it.
The first track i just sing with the guitar, then I tried to put a solo and backing vocals and this started to happen...
    Thank you for the attention!

  • (True) "Real" Stereo tracks converted to Mono after 5.1 update

    Hello:
I have true stereo (as opposed to dual/centered mono) vocal and guitar tracks included in my most recent project. When I played everything back yesterday I noticed that all the "real" instruments had been converted to mono. I checked the source AIFF files and discovered they are still stereo. I typically record multiple vocal tracks and the export the resultant combined vocals (mono) and clean things up in Amadeus Pro. I often split the track, offset one channel, merge the channels and save the now-stereo file which gets imported back into GarageBand. This saves me from having literally hundreds of iso vocal tracks to deal with and it also opens up the vocals by spreading them across the stereo image.
The unwanted stereo to mono conversion has happened once or twice the past and I've never really figured out a remedy other than reimporting the AIFF files.
I was simply curious if anyone had experienced this phenomenon before and discovered a fix before I began the task of reimporting the stereo tracks. Btw, earlier versions of the project were unaffected by the update (if indeed it was the 5.1 update that cause the problem)—so it appears that only the current working project was altered.
    Thanks!
    ~Huck

I discovered I had only one option (mono) until I unplugged my Mbox and selected System Setting as input source in GarageBand. At that point, stereo became available as a option and I went track by track enabling stereo playback. Thank you very much for your assistance! While I'm not entirely certain why having my Mbox selected as the input source changed all my "real" tracks to mono, at least I don't need to go through the hassle of re-importing the source material. I need to use the Mbox for guitar and bass tracks, so hopefully this was a one-time oddity.
Again, thank you for your help!
    ~Tom

  • Best way to apply mono effect to stereo track?

I have a bit of guitar gear that generates a stereo signal that I want to use. I can record it into a stereo track no problem. But I would also like to use effects like Channel EQ on it.
Is there any straightforward way to apply a Channel EQ or other mono effect to both sides of the one stereo track? I seems like that would be a common enough thing to do for Logic to have a mechanism for it...
I know that I could just record the stereo signal onto two mono channels, but then that becomes a hassle grouping them and keeping other settings synchronized, etc.

Never mind. I just figured out that since I had selected one of the built-in electric guitar channel strips (as a starting point) that the effects in the menu were all mono. I reset the channel strip settings and then Channel EQ (and others) are now showing as stereo in the menu. Great!

  • Problem with STEREO track

    hi everyone.
this is a really dumn question since i used to do this all the time is Sonar.
i recorded some vocals and it only recorded in one channel. i could always hit the infinity button to make it mono so i can hear it on both speakers. however, isn't there some effect i can add to get sound on both channels and keep it the stereo track? i'm using the tascam us-122 as an interface and for some reason it only allows you to record on either the L or R. not both of them at the same time. any ideas?

Next time record the mic on two seperate tracks and set the track delay to taste on one of the tracks. Or -quick fix, copy the region to another audio track and set the track delay as above. Use pitch changer to drop or raise the pitch one cent or two (keep it subtle or it will ruin the vocal track). Next ime, you could also use two mics, one a condenser for direct (or ribbon or tube) and a dynamic pointed slightly off center (just becareful to watch for phase issues) small dead rooms work best because they minimize reflections and capture the "dry sound" More track delay can always be added to spread the stereo effect. I find that the spreader plug-ins are good for instruments but deadly to vocals. Your lead vocals have to be kept pure unless you are distorting on purpose. Megabucks are spent on mics and vocal processors by the larger studios for just this purpose. Two or three mics are always better than artificial effects. Try using your best mic in the usual place and set two ambient mics panned hard L/R - watch the phase and enjoy
