Why is CarPlay on by default?

Updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.1 last night and so far I really like it.
But while digging through settings to see what the update changed I discovered that CarPlay was turned on by default.  This seems odd since there are only a very few cars that have this feature and it sounds like you will not be able to update your current infotainment center's firmware to take advantage of this option but instead you will have to buy a new car that has it installed.
I turned it off because I am sure it is searching for a receiver to connect to

Where did you find Car Play in Settings?  I have an iPhone 5S on iOS 7.1 and I've looked but cannot find it.
UPDATE - I did find something for it in Settings > General > Restrictions > CarPlay.
So CarPlay can be restricted.  But that's the end of the story for now.
And in fact if that's the only occurrence of CarPlay in Settings, it would not be looking for a receiver.

  • Why do have a long default Subject when sending picture to Web Gallery?

Why does Apple populate a long default Subject when sending a picture to Web Gallery? This is extremely annoying as the long Subject has to be deleted for each picture (Subject becomes the Pictures' caption in the Gallery) before entering a desired Caption.
Why not just leave the default Subject blank so we can add what we want? I have submitted this as both an enhancement and bug request to online Apple support. Just wanted to call it to others attention in case their was a workaround or so others could also submit it to support.
Not very user friendly having to tap 20+ delete keys before entering a Caption for each picture....

Just keep the delete key pressed down. It's faster.

Why does my iTunes page default to Spanish?

This is often due to the fact that your account is not synced with the new iTunes Radio capabilities, and you have to sign-out and sign in to retreive the new capabilities.
Visit the Store menu and sign out... , and then sign in ... and try again.

Why is this not by default?
This .ds_Store files clutter my synology diskstation which is accessed by windows clients (and one mac).

.DS_Store is a file used by Finder to 'remember' your prefences for that folder or volume. Every folder on your Mac has one, and any connected HDs will also get one.
In OS X it's hidden, but on Windows it isn't recognised and shows up as a 'ghost' file.
You can use the free version of Tinker Tool to stop Finder from creating them on network shares.

  • Why do all of the default templates just open a blank page?

Using Visio 2013 Standard, when I go to create a new drawing it doesn't matter if I select a Blank Drawing or a Wirefram Diagram or a Network Diagram, they all open a blank page in Visio with no shapes/stencils on the left. Why do all of the default templates
open a blank drawing and how can I change that?

    Hi,
As far as I know, we can use the different templates among the different Visio 2013 versions. Based on my test, Visio 2013 Standard version lists the unavailable templates category. Unfortunately, we can't use the stencils which are available in
Visio 2013 Pro version. I'll collect the this information and submit it with internal ways.

  • Why is Firewall disabled by default?

I cannot understand why Apple would do such a thing. If your computer is hooked directly up to a cable modem. You have absolutely no security. This is a terrible thing to do. What's even worse is that if you had Firewall on in Leopard. Even if you do a upgrade to Snow Leopard it turns the Firewall off??!!!!

Quoting from elsewhere on the 'net...
    -=-=-=-
    Short story:
If you do a clean install to a blank or erased disk, Snow Leopard will set the firewall to OFF by default, just as Leopard did.
In the Security pane of System Preferences, click the Advanced button in the Snow Leopard Firewall tab to get to the rest of the options found in the Leopard Firewall tab.
    Long story:
When Leopard arrived, Apple changed the interface to the Mac OS X firewall and caught a fair amount of flak as a result for the confusing way the options were offered. (It also made things worse by deciding to turn the firewall off by default.) In Snow Leopard, it has retained the application-based part of firewall services but has tried to simplify the presentation. The tab now opens with a note of whether the firewall is on or off, a Start/Stop button, and at the bottom, an Advanced button
The Advanced button opens a sheet that present basically the same options as those found in Leopard. But Snow Leopard replaces Leopard's three confusing radio button options (Allow all incoming connections, Allow only essential services, and Set access for specific services and applications) with a single straightforward checkbox "Block all incoming connections." Below that is a scrolling list, carried over from Leopard, that shows which services have been made available (through the Sharing pane) and which specific applications have been either allowed or denied incoming access. As in Leopard, "essential services" (Bonjour, DHCP, and IPsec) are always allowed to accept incoming connections regardless of user settings, but you can now block access to File Sharing and other services.
Note: If you install Snow Leopard over an existing Leopard system, it will pick up your basic firewall settings (along with many other settings). However, if you do a clean install to a blank or erased disk, Snow Leopard will set the firewall to OFF by default, just as Leopard did
In all, the Snow Leopard firewall is not a big change from Leopard, but it's a step forward for clarity. If you're looking for something beefier and more flexible, you do have some third-party firewalls to choose from, such as Open Door Networks' DoorStop X Security Suite. (Open Door's notes on the Snow Leopard firewall are a brief but interesting read, as well.)

  • Why are the weblogic.kernel.Default Execute Threads used by WLS Kernel

In my Admin Console, it's displaying 10 out of the 15 weblogic.kernel.Default Execute Threads are used by the WLS Kernel user. The total requests column for these threads are showing 0. The other 5 threads are showing 20K to 40K requests. Why is the WLS Kernel users hogging these threads and not allowing the applications to use them?

    Hi,
As work enters a WebLogic Server, it is placed in an execute queue. This work is then assigned to a thread within the queue that performs the work.
By default, a new server instance is configured with a default execute queue, weblogic.kernel.default, that contains 15 threads.

  • Why is the master page default for 2 pages?

New to ID; Why are the master pages paired? I made several Master pages that consist of one page and they worked fine, so I'm wondering what I'm missing; no doubt there is a reason that the default is for a pair of master pages. So, what;s the reason?
    vasi

Master pages are paired into spreads when you have "facing pages" checked off in your document setup dialog. This allows for having different information, like mirrored positioning for page numbers, or different running headers, on opposite sides of the spread.
If you only make single page documents or docs that are printed on only one side you might want to uncheck that box.

  • Why is Firefox button not default for Windows XP?

I know that the Firefox button can be shown on Windows XP too by hiding the Menu Bar. But why is it not default? If Windows XP users do not know that Firefox button can be shown by hiding Menu Bar, they will not only not be able to access the Firefox button but will also not be able to enjoy tabs-on-titlebar. Describe Mozilla why it is not default???

One thing to keep in mind about Chrome is that Google started with a clean sheet of paper in ''(what?)'' 2008 when creating a new browser. Firefox has roots from Netscape in 1995, so some of the Gecko base code is pretty old. Plus, Google has a helluva lot more money to spend on developer ''(some of whom have been hired away from Mozilla)'' salaries, where many Mozilla developers are from the "community" and are unpaid volunteers.
I am running the nightly Minefield 4.0b13pre development version on WinXP and don't see tabs in the titlebar as with the Vista and Win7 version screenshots I have seen. With a "stock" Profile, when I hide the Menu bar and select the menu item for Tabs on Top, the only thing in the Titlebar is the Firefox button on the left side of the Titlebar. There are no Tabs in the Titlebar. ''Maybe there is something that I don't understand about the tabs-in-titlebar feature in 4.0??''
As it is with WinXP that is very unappealing to me, so I have a few Profiles that I am playing with that have different modifications that make better use of the Titlebar area. In one Profile I have all my addon Toolbar buttons in the Titlebar - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/personal-titlebar/ - which places anything that is on the Menu bar into the Titlebar when the Menu bar is hidden.
Overall, I haven't used the Menu bar since like 2004 - to me it was always a waste of one toolbar worth of browser viewing area "real estate". I have been using the Compact Menu extension, and the various CM replacement extensions over the years since, to reduce the Menu bar items down to one button on the Nav bar that provides a drop-down menu, which can be activated with the '''Alt''', as the Firefox button / Menu bar now works. ''It could be said that I have been using the Firefox menu button for 7 years now - LOL.''
No browser that I have seen, except for Chrome, doesn't have an option to show a complete Menu bar - removing it completely would be a huge mistake, the option to hide is good enough. Firefox 4.0, Opera 10 & 11, along with IE8 did it a lot better than Google, IMO.
Between Google forcing that damn "updater" program on their users and not having a Menu bar at all, it's gone from my XP desktop and I haven't used it in any months on my Linux netbook.

  • Why is Reader's resolution default to "custom"?

I can't tell you how many hours I've spent with my third-party software trying to generate a clear PDF, only to discover the problem was Reader's default resolution setting of Custom resolution: 110 pixels/inch. As I see it, anyone viewing my documents are going to see them in 110 DPI instead of 96 DPI unless I instruct them to fix their Adobe settings.
I've found posts in this forum dating back to 2009 on this issue. Can anyone tell me why, in Adobe's opinion, this is a preferred setting? And is there any way for me to tell my readers "It's not me..."?

Why is this a problem for YOU? You cannot control what settings people will have, nor demand they change their settings; they may also view in one of the many non-Adobe PDF viewers such as Chrome, FireFox, Microsoft Reader, Apple Preview, or the viewers in Android or iOS. Perhaps you are just trying to dictate too much - authors often try to control more than they need. Yes, screen shots only work at one exact resolution/zoom, but that is the position for everyone.

  • WHY ARE ALL MY TITLES DEFAULTING!?

This is beyond ******* me off.  I have a project with speech bubbles, and for some reason FCP keeps defaulting what I make.  For example, it might say "!!!" in a thought bubble, and I work on more of the project, but when I come back to that title it read, "Title" and is no longer the size, or spot within the bubble that I set it.  This is VERY frustrating.  Please tell me why FCP is being a tw@t.  I'd appreciate it if it'd stop.

Those are good questions.  I'm not sure I know how to use any of those other apps.  Regardless though, shouldn't FCP be self-sufficient, able to stand alone just fine without having to create a workaround through another app? Seems simple to me that if they offer options within their professional program, that these options should work flawlessly.  Especially after shelling out whatever I had to pay to get the professional program initially.  So, if possible, I'd like to avoid using a workaround.  I really like to be able to use my program by itself as optimally and efficiently as any other professional program.  If that sounds silly to demand from a single program, then maybe I am misunderstanding the level that I should expect from a professional program.
So, having gotten that out, does anyone know how to solve the issue I am having with my text bubble reverting to default and saying "Title"?  If I drop a bubble in the timeline, edit the text to say "Boo", copy it, paste it again later in the timeline, reset the parameters for the new paste, edit new text to say "Gotcha!", and close the program -- Why, when it opens again, do the bubbles say "Title"?  This seems like a VERY silly problem.  And it's more than aggrivating to go through an entire project over and over again to fix these mistakes the program seems to be making.
Please, someone suggest something that I can do within FCP alone to make this issue cease to be.
    Thanks.

  • Why does an iPhone/iPad default calendar change?

    Hi,
I'm working with several hundred iPhones and iPads, and I'm having difficulty understanding what causes someone's default calendar to change.
I push an ActiveSync profile through an MDM solution, and on a brand new phone that becomes the default calendar.
Sometimes when I deal with a device later, I see that the default calendar has been changed to either the iPhone calendar, or an iCloud calendar.
What I want to know is *WHY* a calendar changes? Does it change when someone:
    adds an iCloud account
    adds the gmail/yahoo/outlook app
    adds another native mail account
    whenever there's an activesync issue
connects to a computer with iTunes
    accepts a meeting invite
Really any information or experience anyone can provide is helpful. I want to find out what circumstances or changes would require someone to verify their default calendar.
    thanks!

That's actually become our resolution is to have them change it back. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Unfortunately I can't tell what changes it in the first place. I've several devices of my own, and immediately after enrolling in the MDM, one of the devices has the calendar set as the activesync one, and another is the on-device calendar.
There has to be something that triggers this, but I haven't been able to effectively reproduce the problem, but I would expect that the ActiveSync calendar should become the default calendar, but perhaps my expectations are misplaced.

  • Why does Apple Mail window default to wrong monitor?

I have two 30" Apple monitors with a MacPro 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon running Mavericks. In previous systems I would have my Apple Mail open on the second monitor. Since Mavericks nothing I do will let Mail open anywhere but in its default position, which is upper left corner of main monitor. Very frustrating. I must manually move it every time I launch Mail. Any solutions out there?
fyi - iTunes window opens to the same position where I had closed it, which is on my second monitor where I want it.

I have this with Firefox once in a while. To get it back where I want it, I open FF and drag it to the display I want it on & maximize it. Then, I open iTunes on the display I DON'T want FF in, and maximize it. Open a few tabs and close the window. When I reopen it iTunes prevents FF from opening on the other display and it goes back to the secondary.
That may or may not work with Mail

FaceTime was is not an app - Settings > FaceTime > Toggle On
YouTube was removed with iOS 6. That was part of the Restore

Are you using WI-Fi sync when you get this message? You Restored with iTunes so I assume you have access to the device settings in iTunes. Try to sync with iTunes
