Why is Color Washed Out after making DVD from FCP

I took a 3 minute corporate video from FCP (shot SD, NTSC DV) and compressed from the timeline in Compressor (3.01) to DVD best 90 minutes. When I burned the DVD in DVDSP (4.2) and played it in a stand alone DVD player with a JVC production monitor it looked washed out. It looks nothing like it does in FCP or DVDSP.
Any idea what is going on?

Yes to the monitor. I shot the video with a Panasonic HVX200 to P2 cards, downloaded and color corrected on Color. Viewed on two production monitors: A JVC CRT and a new Panasonic 26" LCD (LH2600W) production monitor which is fed from a Kona Card via SDI. My Apple 30" monitor, which I edit on is color calibrated with a Spyder calibrator.
I have played the DVD on the 30" and it looks washed out, even after comparing it to a QT movie from the timeline and played on the 30". Something seems to be happening when the DVD is burnt. The mpeg2 file when played in the inspector in Compression looks good too.
This is weird, since I have never had this problem before, but this is the first use of the new Compression.

  • Colors washed out after restart

I recently had a system wide spinning beach ball, couldn't launch Terminal or Activity Monitor so I was forced to restart the machine.
When I logged into my main user, all the colors were washed out and hazy. The highlight colors look different, some light colored web images are nearly invisible. Everything just sort of glows.
If I log in as a different user, everything looks normal. When I switch back, the washed out colors return. I thought I found the answer online, and ran DMProxy, but this has no effect.
I tried calibrating the display in Display Calibrator, but all that has done so far is create different looking washed-out displays. Switching to the default "Cinema HD Display" profile (which my other two user accounts are also using) just reverts back to the original washed-out display.
Does anyone have any ideas? This is really frustrating and I hope I don't have to reinstall OS X over this.
    Thanks!

Amazing! I looked at the Universal Access panel and saw that the contrast was dialed way up.
Now I think I know what happened - when my Finder was hanging before the restart, I went through a comprehensive PLOKTA (Press Lots of Keys To Abort) sequence hitting about every key combination I could think of - I must have hit the contrast up hotkey - Ctrl-Opt-Cmd-period.
Man... I never would have figured that out.
    Thank you!!!

  • MBP and LED Cinema Display Color Washed Out After Screen Saver

When coming out of screen saver, often the color profile on either my LED Cinema Display or the MBP LCD is messed up. The color looks washed out. Simply going to the Color tab in the Displays preference pane fixes this.
How do I get this to stop?
    Thanks,
    Bobby

My 13" MBP has now started to do the same thing as described. The thing is, it has never done this since I bought it in late July 2009. I have iWork installed, Firefox, Skype, and Pixelmator. I may have a clue, however, for the Apple people: my MBP never did this until last night and this morning. The only thing I changed yesterday was removing the 2 gig of memory and installing 4 gig. I also tried the translation widget for the first time.

  • Colors washed out after simple edit in ver 9 demo

I am trying to find a video editor that can competently cut the beginning and ending off a long video and then save it with minimal changes to the source data.  If it can do it without re-encoding, that would be ideal.
I installed Premiere Elements 9 as a demo, and tried exactly that.  Exported in the same resolution and encoding as the source.  The output has noticeably duller colors and a lighter black level compared to the source.  Is this problem specific to the demo version?  Is there some default that comes set incorrectly?  Why would the software change the brightness and contrast and color intensity if I didn't ask it to?
Can Premiere Elements cut a segment out of a video without reducing its quality or otherwise altering its appearance?

Have you tried the DSLR project presets for a project?
If your video is compatible with this preset, there will NOT be a red line above your clips when you add them to your project's timeline.
Also, I would recommend that, if you plan to edit in Premiere Elements, you don't use the camera's software to get the video into the computer. You should connect the camcorder to your computer via USB and put it on Play and then use Premiere Elements' Get Media/From Flip, AVCHD and Camera tool to download the video from the camera to the computer. This will ensure that the video comes into the program in its native state rather than being converted in some way by the software.
This method will enable you to test to see if the program and your camera's video are compatible. As I said, the program is designed to interface with Canon's upper end DSLRs. I can't guarantee that it will work with video produced by their pocket cameras. It may also be MP4s -- but it may not be of the same flavor of MP4s as the Canon D series produce.
Please let us know if your experiments are successful as it will help us answer future similar questions.

  • Prints washed out after OS upgrade

Prints from my Epson R1800 appear washed out after the most recent Leopard updates. I removed and reinstalled the drivers with no improvement. This is the same performance I had when Leopard was new. Any suggestions?

Open System Preferences > Print & Fax and delete the printer again. Now, control-click in the empty printers list. A menu showing 'Reset printing system' will appear. Click this window. Now add the printer again and see if the quality has improved.

  • Making a DVD from FCP X project

A few projects ago, I could render a movie for DVD from FCP X onto a DVD to burn.  Then, it would be working for hours and hours and never finish.. a day later, it wasn't finished.  Can't make one since.
What could be the problem? I s some part of the process too big for my hardware or software?  Can I change something to allow it to work again?
Any ideas?  Perhaps something is set wrong?

  • RGB color in inDesign changes (washed out) after exporting it to PDF

    Hi,
I am new to InDesign and i have a hard time figuring out how could I export my InDesign file to PDF without affecting the color.
    This is what I do.
    1. I created a new document with Transparency Blend Space set to Document RGB
    2. I created a box using the rectangle tool and filled it up with RGB color, R=126 G=12 B=110
    3. The color in Indesign is just how i wanted it, however, the problem arises when i export the file now to PDF
    4. Instead of the color i wanted, the color was changed to a lighter color, or washed out.
    5. THis happens even in text have the same RGB setting.
How could I export it to PDF with the same color, without being washed out?
I really appreciate your help on this. Thanks.

That sounds like the Color Picker, which works a bit differently in ID than in Illustrator or Photoshop. If the cursor is not in one of the RGB fields when you say OK you won't get RGB color. You can see this by noting the text in the Add ... Swatch button. My guess is you added the color as the CMYK conversion which is a bit lighter.
You might want to use the panel menu in the Swatches panel instead, or the new swatch button at the bottom of the panel while holding down the Alt key to open the new swatch definition dialog. You want to create a Process color and change the type to RGB, then enter the values in the RGB fields. Or if what you want is really Pantone 249U you can define a Spot swatch and choose Pantone Solid Uncoated and then specify the 249. I'll warn you though, that CS6 uses Lab values for displaying spot colors and 249U is considerably lighter than either the RGB you specified or the 249C. In earlier versions the book value conversions were used. Even when using Lab display values through Ink Manager in CS5, the coated and uncoated swatches incorrectly look the same in ID, and in Illustrator CS5 you would need to turn on overprint preview to see a difference.
Here are a couple of screen captures from PDFs exported from ID CS5 and CS6 using High Quality Print. The colored boxes with the lables were pasted from Illustrator CS5 to be sure I was using the same color definitions and that theywere behaving as native objects. Below are the same boxes placed:
and here is how the screen looked in CS6 in ID (notice the difference in the placed .ai file -- the screen preview is NOT using the Lab values, although it exports with them):
I don't know what the content is and how you present it, but it doesn't sound like a web page. That said, if you choose Web for intent in Document Setup you can still use print size paper sizes for the document and change the rulers after the doc is created to read inches or millimeters or other units of your choice instead of pixels and the file will use default RGB swatches and default to RGB when making new colors.

  • Colors in LR 5 washed out after transfer to new laptop

I just transferred my Lightroom 5 software to my new laptop, which runs Windows 8.1. I have calibrated the monitor using the software that comes preloaded with that version. The color display looks great on everything except when I open Lightroom. The colors are very gray and washed out in the program. I am wondering if there is a setting within Lightroom that may need to be changed. It is at factory settings as I have just loaded it a couple of days ago. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

It sounds like LR is trying to use your display profile and cannot for some reason.   If your calibration is based on a manufacturer-supplied profile for your display, that could be the problem because many manufacturer-supplied profiles are not compatible LR.
What I’d suggest is set your display profile to sRGB-whatever in the Color Management applet in Control Panel, then reboot, then run through the Windows display calibration procedure, again.   This will make a display profile based on the standard sRGB profile instead of whatever you were using, before.
Here is a document that describes how to switch your display profile to sRGB in Windows 7, which would be similar to Windows 8:

  • Why is text washed-out when I'm using a color-filled text box?

I have created some text boxes in InDesign. I've colored them a lighht green, and I am trying to type into them but my text is washed out, even though I am picking a much darker text than the box fill. How do I fix this? I am working on a tight deadline! Please help.

Thanks. Here's a screenshot. I'm referring to the light green boxes on the side. The text I'm using is the same color as the text above that says "appalachian ohio" but it isn't showing up.

  • Web Colors: Washed out.  Color Profile?

When using lightroom, I find that photos that are exported as Web images appear washed out and lighter than when I'm in the "Library" section. I find myself compensating by darkening the images in the Library to get the just right in "Web".
I guess I attribute that to a mismatched color profile. But I can't find any settings saying "the Library color profile is AdobeRGB and the Web profile is sRGB" or something like that.
Where is that setting? Am I crazy? Again? :-)
    gm.

After so many people here and in every other photography forum asking why their images look 'wrong' in a browser, and the answer being, over and over, that they are using the wrong color space for output, it should be obvious that the reason that they notice and catch the problem is because they are using a non-managed browser. The ONLY reason they caught the problem is because they are using a non-managed browser. If they are using a managed browser, they won't catch the problem.
I would much rather use a browser that represents an average view and have confidence that people are seeing something reasonable, than assume that everything went right and post stuff indiscriminately and in a sense blindly. After all, if there is going to be so much variation between monitors, why stress out with color management in the first place. Just calibrate your monitor so you have a decent baseline and move on. But have SOME way to know that the workflow went as expected... use a managed browser and that final check is inexistent.
Suppose you print at a place like Lulu.com. Would you upload and order
50 copies of a book before you buy one copy of a book and make sure that everything is correct? That would be just plain stupid. Well, putting up a website without checking it on a non-color managed browser is just about as silly.
To each his own... some advice is practical, some is theoretical... understand the theory, but live in a practical world. And take simple steps to catch stupid mistakes, like making sure that you use a non-managed browser to make sure that you output the right colors.

  • Colors washed out

    Hello,
after working a couple of months with Adobe PS CS4 and Apple FCE 4 on my new iMac I finally want to burn the results onto a DVD. But what ever I do concerning settings and tools the results regarding the colors are always the same (and disappointing): Compared to the FCE canvas the colors look washed out!!! Either in the DVD player windows besides the canvas(!) or on my standalone TV set in the living room.
My old DVDs created under Mac OS X 1.4 didn't show this behavior. I already browsed some gamma related articles, I already tried to export a DIVX (instead of a MOV), which looks beautiful and matches exactly the canvas coloring, but when it came to iDVD the burned result is as described above. I noticed exactly the same issues using DVD Studio Pro instead! There must be a kind of generic process responsible for the final rendering and using a wrong setting...
I really would appreciate if there's somebody how could give me a valuable hint.
    Thanks a lot,
    Erich

iDVD doesn't change the actual pixel values it is given very much, However, as I understand it, it ignores any color profiles you may be using (think no color management).

  • IDVD Color Washed Out

I created a movie in iMovie 9 and a dvd in iDVD 7.0.4.  When I play the dvd on a TV the colors are very washed out.  It looked fine in preview in both iMovie and idvd. Help!  BTW, I am just a simple user and know nothing about video editing, that's why I bought a Mac!

It depends on how you imported your video and how you exported your video.  If you outline the steps you took to get your video into iMovie, I might be able to offer a bit of help.  I don't recommend iMovie as it is not a professional grade video editor and therefore, it can cause you problems.
