Why is computer name now followed by (3) in finder?

why is computer name now followed by (3) in finder? Now my MacBook Pro is called Matts MacBook Pro (3)?

Mculmore,
I believe and if I'm right the thing what has changed is your computers network name. The reason this happen is quite technical and even I'm not 100% sure why, but it has something to do with when your computer requests that name on your network and your network says it is already taken. Your computer then appends its name to make up for it by adding a ( # ) number to it. Your network for some reason probably didn't release the name back in time. Mine has done this before as well. If you would like to change your computers name back to you can go to.
System Preferences -> Sharing -> Then change ( Computer Name ) back to what it was.
Hope that helps,
Weston

Do you still have all toolbars visible (View > Toolbars)?
Did you use an extension or the standard zoom buttons that you can find in the toolbar palette in the View > Toolbars > Customize window ?
Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.

  • Oracle XE on Windows 7 laptop. Changed computer name, now cannot connect

I run Oracle XE on my laptop with Windows 7. I just changed my computer name and rebooted. Now I cannot connect to the Oracle XE database at all. I found references to the old computer name in the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files under C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN.
Is there any other file I need to update in order for the change to work?
    Thanks!
    François

Is the database running? (check near the bottom of alert_xe.log, was the last startup OK ... )
Other than the updated host = <hostname> in listener.ora and TNS alias that should be all the updates that are needed, as long as your <hostname> resolves to the right TCP address, and a reverse lookup on the TCP address shows the new hostname, as a double check it try these in a command box (dunno about win7 if the nslookup is in the winnetworking or maybe something different? hosts?) ...
    $ ipconfig /all
    Host Name .. : <hostname>
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    ... IP[v4?] Address: <your TCP/IP address>
    $ nslookup <hostname>
    ... <your TCP/IP address>
    $ nslookup <your TCP/IP address>
    ... <hostname>

  • Changed my computer name now my phone wont sync with itunes

I was trying to connect to a remote desktop software and i changed my computer name.
whenever i try to sync my phone it shows me a message saying an iphone can be synced with only one itunes library at a time

I think it means you need to update your iTunes, the newsest version is 11.0

  • Why is contact name now appearing with New Text Message notification?

How do I get the contact name to not appear when I'm notified I have a new text? It used to just say something like "New Text Message." This is happening when my phone is locked.

This was part of the new 2.2 update. There is no setting to turn this off.

  • How do I get my computer name to show correctly in the finder?

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and following that upgraded to an SSD drive. Life is good and I am happy with everything except that since the upgrades I am seeing a silly variety of names for my computer.
I renamed it to The Shire and now it shows up as The Shire (2) or The Shire (3). No matter how many times I change it back in Preferences > Sharing, it keeps adding all those extra numbers. There are times when I see four or five different iterations of my system - see attached image.
To add insult to injury, the old name of my system, the generic MacBook Pro (5) also shows in the list.
From what I have read this may have something to do with Bonjour, but I have not see any solutions out there for restoring order and correct names to list.
I would appreciate some assistance resolving this.

As of now this is simply a workaround for a bug that will hopefully be fixed in a future version of Yosemite. The only impact it may have on you is if you rely on using bonjour connections for any of your peripherals such as a bonjour-enabled printer. Otherwise, you will not notice a problem at all.

  • Computer Name Changed

    Hello.
Recently I noticed that the computer name of my macbook pro changed from Erugalatha's Computer to Erugalatha's Computer (2).
I didn't update/install/change anything lately so why would this happen?
I've also noticed that the Applications folder is becoming really slow to access ... when I click on it in Finder it takes about 3-4 minutes to render all (149) items in it.
If I click off onto another folder and back to Applications it renders them all again - another 3-4 minutes.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

No ... it's not part of a network. I connect to the internet using a 3G Card (huawei) but am rarely connected on wireless routers - not lately anyways.
I'm not running windows in bootcamp - if that's what you mean? I run windows in Parallels but none of those virtual machines are named "Erugalatha's Computer".
I'm stumped but it's not a big deal - just wondering why it would happen without notification or why the computer name would be even allowed to change without somebody going in and manually changing it. Nobody uses the machine but me.
Is there a way to change it back and keep it like that?

  • Odd computer name folders in c:\users?

One of my clients has an odd issue I've found no references yet in any of my searching on the internet.
SBS 2011 with current patches and hotfixes and SP level.
A couple months ago, rather than just the couple of system account and admin account profiles showing up under c:\users I now have most of the PC names in there with a dollar sign after them.
So for example, folders include administrator, my admin account, spfarm, etc, the "normal" things I'd expect to see on any SBS server.  However, this one has the computer names now showing up suddenly, such as NS3336$, rditt-hp-076$, etc,
pretty much every computer name with a $ at the end.  They're not shared, and don't have most of the folders you'd expect a used profile to have such as desktop, etc.  These ONLY contain the NTUSER.DAT files, an appdata folder, and the normal shortcut
folders for backwards compatibility issues like "local settings" and "nethood" and such.
I've not seen this on any of the SBS installs we have anywhere else, or even any standard DC.  And as I said, I've not come across any posts yet in my googling...
Anyone else ever come across this?  Most were created within on the same day within a few minutes time frame.
    Thanks
    John
    John

    Hi John,
Would you please let me confirm one question? Did you mean that those folders which suffix with dollar signs
    were not share folders?
Meanwhile, was there any symptom that you can find after this issue occurred? For an example, some specific
functions can’t be used or any other. In addition, please run
SBS 2011 BPA and check if can find some relevant issues.
By the way, would you please provide a screenshot of this issue? I t may help us to understand clearly. (Please
hide the private and protected information.)
If any update, please feel free to let us know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes, and Itunes can't find my Ipad. [email protected]

Ok, if reinstalling iTunes as suggested above does not resolve the issue of iTunes recognising the iPad then try this -
Firstly, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, make sure your lead /connections are no faulty.
Fourthly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
And failing all that put the device into Recovery mode. See here and note the paragraph 'If you restore from a different computer.... ' down near the bottom of the page -
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
As for making your new laptop your 'home computer' follow these instructions -
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (it will not start automatically because of the action at 1(C) above).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.
Also see here as to moving your music to your new computer -

  • Why the computer network name change?

Every now and this this happens: I unhook my MBPro from my office connection (ethernet) and take it into the living room and plug in there (ethernet). Wireless is off. Usually fine, but other times I get the message that a computer with this same name is already in use, so adds a number to my computer name (for local access). So I assume that Time Capsule thinks my computer still in the office as well.
Why does this happen? Is there something I should do before moving the computer to prevent this?
    Thanks,
    — Richard

Try giving your Mac a DHCP Client ID
    System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP -> DHCP Client ID
This should tell your router that you are the same Mac and not assign you a new IP address when you move.
Also after you give your Mac a DHCP Client ID, you can configure your Time Capsule to give your Mac the same IP address when ever it connects
Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule -> Edit -> Network -> DHCP Reservations -> [+] -> Reserve Address by: DHCP Client ID, then enter the DHCP Client ID you gave your Mac.  Click [Update]

Time Capsule error 22 - My time capsule was working fine and didn't notice anything wrong with it until it stopped backing up about two weeks ago. I never changed anything like computer names or the Airport settings. All I get is the following:
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Linda's Computer 1.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22).
I tried resetting the Time Capsule and connecting with an ethernet cable, although the Ariport Utility says everything is working fine through WiFi.

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

  • Why does the local network and computer name keep changing?

After upgrading to Yosemit the local network name and computername on my iMAC keep changes link:
    Mycomputer-1
    Mycomputer-2
    Mycomputer-3
    Why?
I have tried to change it back in sharing and network locations.
Is this also the reason the my iPhone cannot find my iPhone often cannot find my iMac when I will sync it? Then I have to restart the iPhone and iTunes on the computer. This happens very very often.
Maybe it also linked to these errors which the log is full of - many every minute:
19/10/14 12.11.09,522 discoveryd[53]: Basic DNSResolver  dropping message because it doesn't match the one sent Port:0 MsgID:256

I think the is some bug/clash between bonjour and other network protocols. That is only a guess.

After resetting the computer name and local host name to the correct name without the number I also shotdown my iMac, my AppleTV, my iPhone, my iPad and then rebooted my Airport/Time capsule it seemed to work at least for several days. But yesterday I discovered that my Apple TV now also has changed name to Apple TV (2).
I logged into iCloud.com to see my devices and here it was really wired. My Apple TV was called Apple TV (2) and my iMac also had (2) after the name. Then I checked it on the iMac but here it was correct! Why can it have one name on the iCloud and another on the computer.
I restarted both the iMac, Apple TV and Airport Time capsule then everything was correct also on iCloud.com.
But today the iMac was called the name (2) again on the iMac. And now the local host name also had -2 after the name. It has not always been both names that has changed. That is really wired. And today Wifi was not working on the iMac after wake from sleep. I changed the name back and rebooted again also the Airport Time capsule. Now it is working again.
The log is still full of this messages:

The name is not the only problem. Often itunes will not find my iPhone and iPad. Then i need to close iTunes and restart the iPhone and iPad then it works for some time.
And the iPhone and AppleTV will not always wake the iMac from sleep. I am wondering if the is linked to the changing of name.
I have seen by googling that it can be related to a sleep proxy problem so it seems like that here is two devices on the net with the same name that is why name is changing, but to know this do not help me to solve the problem. I have also seen all the suggestion to turn almost every services off on the computer, but again I it is not a solution and I have the iMac and devises to use the functionality not to shot everything down. So I do not really understand people saying turn off itunes, turn off blueboth, and turn off this and that.
Apple must soon come with a real solution. We are really many people have these problem since we upgraded to Yosemite and iOS 8.
I have also listed some of the iTunes errors from the log below:

  • Why can't I get firefoc 6, I had it on my old computer and now I can not find it to download

I updated to firefox 6 and have since gotten a new computer and now can only download 4.0. Why can't I get at least 5.6 update?

You likely had FF 3.6 instead of 6. At the moment, FF 4 is the latest version. If you wish to rollback to an earlier version, you can download your preferred version for your OS here:
    http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/
FF 4 is the latest and greatest. If you are not experiencing specific problems that force you to roll back to an earlier version, you will probably want to stick with FF 4.
If you do roll back, you may want to back up your profile for safekeeping:
