Why is deleting preferences neccessary to prevent crashes?

Granted, I am relatively new to using Lightroom. I participated in the LR2 beta, provided suggestions in the adobe labs forum and am currently using the trail version of LR2. While reading a message in this forum, several comments were made regarding the deletion of preferences while trying to figure out why the persons machine kept freezing up on him. Could someone please explain why deleting preferences is necessary, and provide what steps to take to do so.
So far, LR2 is working great and I look forward to using it. I would just like to know if I need to delete preferences before I run into trouble.

The presences trashing is a troubleshooting step if you are having severe stability issues. Lightroom should _NOT_ be crashing on a regular basis, but if it DOES crash, the odds are pretty good the preferences can become corrupted by the crash (or that the crash might be caused by corrupted preferences). So, this is a very specific step to take if you have or are crashing. Not something you need to do on a regular basis.
As for how to troubleshoot crashes and hangs,, it depends on you OS. Check the FAQS, in particular
Troubleshoot system errors or freezes in Photoshop Lightroom. It deals with Lightroom 1.x but the locations of the preferences are the samejust substitute Lightroom 2 for the original Lightroom name of the prefs.

Why does display preferences crash everytime I access it and how do I restore it?

On my late 2011 Macbook Pro, after upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1, I can no longer access System Preferences->Display as it crashes everytime I try to access it. Here is the related crash log that generates.

Crashes when printing, deleted preferences file. Didn´t help. Lightroom version 5.6

Reinstalled Lightroom with latest update
Printing from Epson Easy photo print works fine
The problem must be a Lightroom issue. Searched forum for alternatives. And came up with deleting preferences file option
Tried this now, but didn't solve the issue for me.
Using OS X, 10.9.5, Lightroom 5.6
Any suggestions to the problem other than "exporting files and use Epson Photo print"

i use firefox for 6 years and i never seen this problem before.
My firefox used to keep the places history for a long time (longer than 6 months) and it was good.
But last month, firefox deleted all my history.
Fortunately i have backed the "mozilla" folder up. so i overwrited the old mozilla folder to .../appdata/roaming/mozilla . And i solved the problem.
But after a few days it happened again. So i wrote a batch file to back up my mozilla folder when windows starts.
Now firefox deletes my history about ones in a month. and i restore it and again and again...
have can i stop this? Why firefox deletes my history?

How to prevent crashes - ITextModelCmds

In our plugin we substitute text defined by xml marker positions. The following code is working fine for the majority of our test cases, but for a specific combination of substitutions it fails with an access violation when calling RecomposeThruLastFrame.
I really hope somebody can give me a hint on modifying the following code to prevent crashes?

Just a wild guess: there could be interfering TextPreProcess or TextPostProcess services (in short "PP").
When you delete a range that holds a protected character e.g. the start tag without the matching end tag, the responsible PP will reduce the range in question to exclude the protected character and process or schedule a delete for the remainder. The whole mechanism is very instable as soon as multiple PP's are involved, because the execution order of the PPs is not really predictable while you can be sure that text offsets shift around like hell.
Even though I would not use them in production code, for your diagnostics you could add an ICommandInterceptor and trace what's going on under the hood.
Some ideas: try to wait until the dust has settled down - e.g. process all scheduled commands, or schedule your insertion, or - even better - use a TypeTextCmd that does both delete and insert in one step ...

How to delete preferences?

Could someone please tell me how to go about deleting preferences for ITunes? I knew how to do it in OS9 but I have not yet figured out how to do it in Tiger. A friend of mine was listening to ITunes yesterday and writing a final paper when her G4 IBook crashed, told her the hard drive was Zeroed out and would not restart. I zapped the PRAM and it started fine so I am thinking that maybe if I trashed her ITunes preferences it might help her problem. I told her to get it backed up and try working without ITunes on and she had no problem the rest of the day.

Try looking for and/or deleting incomplete downloads from the the iTunes Media folder. Then try downloading again, so its not resuming or overwriting a previous download.

How can I re-enable the RSS reader?

All RSS Readers that I tested from MacAppStore are much worst than Mail's in Lion.
Hate them all. I'm using blogtrottr.com to compile all RSS and send me via email. But it's flooding my mailbox. There're a bunch of them that require a Google Reader account, and I won't do that. It doesn't matter to Google which RSS I'm following.
I wish Apple put RSS reading back to Mail. Stupid idea taking it off.

I am having the same problem, but I think I might know what's causing it. I just updated my girlfriend's iPhone 4S (same phone as mine) to iOS 6 and was surprised to find that her app store is working just fine. When I opened hers, however, I did notice that the "Categories" and "Top 25" buttons are totally different; and those happen to be the two buttons that are not working for me. Mine shows the same that yours does, while hers has the "Genius" and "Charts" buttons in the place of the two that are not functioning for me. I believe these old buttons are no longer active and therefor are bombing out when attempting to access them.
Now I said I think I may understand the problem, but unfortunately I have no idea what the solution may be. Hopefully this tread doesn't fade away and our problem gets addressed.

After I had updated to Itunes 11 (also on Windows 7), I had the same experience, but I suspect that it was because I accepted a proposal to set up an external media library in order to simplify security backups. An associated result was that I had lost all of my playlists!
What I did was to restore the entire library off my Ipod, using a very good program called PodToPC (a free download is available) selecting an option to replace all of the stuff in the Itunes library. I use the Ipod Classic simply because it has a large capacity to hold my collection of CD and Vinyls. No way was I going to modify duplicates of 10000 tracks in 750 playslists by hand! I did have a few residual problems with some of the playlist specs but, after a few hours of work all was restored.

I haven't encountered this problem on my iPad Air but this is what I usually do when Mail misbehaves.
Quit the Mail app like I describe then reset the iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.

HT3275 I've 1.85TB empty space on my time Machine, but it only backs up to the beginning of the previous month. it should have weekly back-ups for every month before that. Any ideas why it deletes stuff older than a month?

If you are using Ethernet to connect your Mac to the Time Capsule, are you allowing at least 2-3 minutes for Time Machine to fully load when you open the application to see your backups?
If you are using wireless to connect, you may need to allow 8-10 minutes or longer for everything to fully load, depending on the speed of your wireless connection.
If you see only white time "bars" on the timeline at the right of the screen, you are seeing temporary backups. Permanent backups are displayed with purple "bars".

Why is deleting preferences neccessary to prevent crashes?
