Why is downloading slow from iTunes

I Am away on holiday and I am downloading rentals from iTunes but they are slow. Is there anyway this can be made quicker?

Many users seem to be experiencing this issue around the world (see thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/16981332#16981332) - my iTunes dowload last night showed 7 hours ETA for a 45 minute tv show. this morning I rebooted it and tried again, it is now taking 2 hours. An improvement in theory but still terrible. I don't know if it is internet connection but everything else I do on the internet seems to be running at normal pace.....

When I try to watch downloaded TV and Movies from iTunes they will pause for a minuite or 2 and then continue. I have an iPod Touch 4G and an iPad 2. Im having the same problem with my g4 iPod touch and it is driving me nuts. The freezes happen with downloaded movies ON my ipod, not my computer so these suggestions won't work. I read that the same problem is happening with rentals. I would love to know why this is happening. I would like some answers... and a way to fix it.

Purchased movie from itunes, downloading started, showed as processing but it's been like that all day. Tried to cancel download and everything froze. It has happened before.

I sounds like you have the first generation (1G) iPod Touch with an iOS earlier than 2.0, Yu can identify your ipod here:
Identifying iPod models
You can identify your iOS version by going to Settings>General>About and look by Version. Yu can update ti iOS 3.1.3 (the lated for the 1G) by this link. It is a paid update. You may have to try another browser to get he sublink to work correctly.

Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
If so have you done anything like update iTunes on the computer since it last successfully synced?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Are any fo the unsyning songs DRM protected?
What is the detail format of the non-syncing songs?
Does any media now sync to the iPod?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?

Just send the following steps to your friend:
1) Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on your computer. The latest version is available free of charge from the Apple website:

2) Click the following link to launch iTunes and display the Redeem page:

Rentals are one-time only downloads, they will not show on other devices/computers for redownloading.
If you rent a film on your iPad or Apple TV then you can only watch it on that device. If you rent it on your Mac then you can move it from there to your iPhone or your Apple TV (if it's a first gen Apple TV) : FAQs about renting movies from the iTunes Store :
If you rented the movie on your computer, you can move it to an iOS device or Apple TV (1st generation). To do this, connect the devices and sync using USB. When you move a rented movie from your computer, it will disappear from your computer’s iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as much as you want, but you can only have it on one device at a time.

OK thanks I will try that. I just don't understand why I still can't download new videos as I've deleted the software I installed and I've changed my camera settings back to what they were before when I could download into iPhoto. I perhaps should have mentioned it's iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5. Is there any way of putting iPhoto back as the "default download and view" programme?
It could be as simple as longer (larger) videos - iPhoto does not always handle larger video files well

iPhoto is not a download and view program - it is a photo management database program that imports photos - Image Capture is a download program - Preview is a view program
The default program to download your photos is set in the preference panel of either iPhoto or image capture
