Why is DVI displayed at startup?

For a few seconds at startup or when starting from sleep mode, the computer displays "DVI" in a small retangular square.  After looking at this a few hundred times and waiting all those seconds, it does not look normal and has become annoying.  Any ideas why this is happening?

I concur with Kappy, it is the monitor putting up that brief message and not the Mac.
While my older LG monitor does not put up the connection message, my newer Samsung monitor does.

  • Mac Mini does not detect DVI display on startup

Okay, I have a Pre 2009 Mac Mini 2Ghz Core 2 Duo. My monitor is a Westinghouse Digital LCM-22w3. The display is hooked up through DVI. When I start or restart the mac, it seems that it does not detect the display is plugged in. I have to wait for OS X to finish booting to either put the mac to sleep and bring it out of sleep or unplug the DVI cable and plug it back in to get the display on. If I hook the display via VGA using the VGA to DVI converter there is no problem. I have tried resetting the NVRAM but that does not fix the problem. I would like to get this fixed so I don't have to switch cables to be able to boot my boot camp windows install. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Following some investigations the problem appears to be with the power saving features of the monitor.
The MAC mini knows that the monitor is connected but the monitor puts itself to sleep.
The problem appears only when you use a single link DVI-D cable.
These are the ones with two blocks of nine pins with one large blade.
If you use a Dual link DVI-D cable (twenty four pins and one blade) the problem resolves itself and the display is active from power on.
It looks like the mini or the monitor is using one of the pins from the middle block of six for some reason.
Anyway, good look with this, I had a couple of spare DVI cables from when I was trying to get my original G4 mini working with my TV.
    Regards
    Gavin

  • How to use thunderbolt port with disks and DVI-display

    Hello,
today I use a 15" MacBookPro and have attached 1TB LaCie with FW800  (for time machine) and DVI-Display using Mini-port.
Need to add more external disk space and look for Lacie 2 TB with thunderbolt connection (for storing mass of pictures in Raid1 version)
Is it possible to connect the new disk, the other disk with an Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter and the DVI-Display to one thunderbolt port?
What are the options I have, to get all three to work at the same time?

No, or at least not without additional hardware. You have too many end-points for one Thunderbolt chain.
You also have the problem that the Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter is not yet for sale.
If the new disk you get has two Thunderbolt ports (which not all do), you could daisy-chain the Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter behind it, but that adapter has to be at the end of the chain. The Mini-port->DVI adapter likewise needs to be at the end of a chain.
So, you can probably get all three connected at one time by connecting the "1TB LaCie with FW800  (for time machine)" to your FW800 port, while connecting the Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter (when available) to the second port of the new disk. I say "probably" because nobody has the TB-FW adapter yet to try it.
As for doing it on one Thunderbolt port with additional hardware, you might look into third-party docking stations being released in the next few months. The announced prices are in the low-to-middle hundreds. I won't mention brand names, as this is an Apple forum, but they aren't too hard to find by web search.
The highest-priced solution would be the Apple Thunderbolt Display, which gives you a FW800 port for your 1TB drive, a pass-thru Thunderbolt port for your new disk, and of course a 2560x1440 display (plus ethernet and usb2 ports you may not need). It's available now, in the uppermost hundreds. There are some refurbs in the online Apple Store at the moment at 15% off.

  • 2 External DVI Displays on MacBook Pro Retina Display

    Hello,
I have seen all the 3 external display setups for the RMBP and all that stuff going around the internet showing how thunderbolt displays and HDMI can be used together.
I have also read about how daisychaining works for 2 apple thunderbolt displays.
But i was wondering if i can use two external displays on my retina MBP buy using a mini DP to DVI converter. Then attaching a DVI splitter to this converter and connecting the two ends of the DVI splitter to 2 DVI displays.
This is setup we use at my work. The splitter is nothing fancy. It connects to the dvi output on our PC computers and we connect it to our two monitors. to get dual displays.
Or will this not work and I will have to use both my thunderbolt ports to run 2 mini DP to DVI converters? (slash will that work?)
Advice will be very much appreciated!

You can, but you need additional hardware to do so:

  • Extending my desktop across 2 (DVI) displays from 15" MacBook Pro Retina

Hi. I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro Retina a few days ago and am trying to connect 2 Dell displays with a view to extending my desktop across them both. At the Apple shop I was told I simply needed to buy 2 Thunderbolt to DVI converters (my 2 displays both have DVI out) and hook them up... Not true. If I try this my desktop only extended across 1 display. The other display isn't even picked up by my MacBook Pro.
So does anyone out there know how I connect 2 DVI displays to my MacBook Pro without buying a Matrox Dual Link? If I bought an HDMI to DVI converter cable and connected one display via the HDMI port, and the other display via the thunderbolt port, would this work?

May not be an upgrade issue ..
You have a fast processor. and 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient.  (The processor cannot be replaced)
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the system down.
If your Mac seems to running slower, try the suggestions here > Mac troubleshooting: What to do when your computer is too slow | Macworld
If you have not done so, especially with school files stored on the hard drive, make sure to back up your important data on a timely basis.  Help here >  Mac Basics: Time Machine
Not a good idea to post the serial number of your Mac on the net. I have asked the moderators to edit that information for you. It has nothing to do with upgrading.

  • Garbled display at startup when connecting to External Monitor - MBP Early 2011.

    Hi,
When i connect my Early 2011 MBP to an external display i get a garbled display at startup.
I then have to disconnect the hdmi cable to the external monitor, after which the display clears up (on the laptop) and then when i reconnect the external monitor, it works fine. The problem with this process is that i have to do it each time i start/boot my laptop with the external display connected. The display mode is currently set to mirror displays if that helps.
Would appreciate any advice users with this kind of set up can provide. Thank you in advance.

    Welcome!!
It could be that you are using the external in "mirrored mode" with the res set above the max res for the MBP screen. On my Late 2007 MBP, the F7 key toggles between mirrored mode and "spanning" (or "extended desktop") mode and System preferences will let you set the two displays independently. I use an external monitor in spanning mode and have not experienced a problem as I have the internal display prefs set to a comfortable res for its hardware.

  • HT204407 why is the display on my icloud page so freaking big. It's magnified about a hundred times and why can't I scroll up and down. The thing is frozen. It's very irritating.

Why is the display on my icloud page so freaking large. It's magnified about a hundred times. It's like I can see only one letter at a time. I'm using a PC, but I recently bought an Iphone, so I was going with their technology. But this Icloud display thing is just a pain in the ***. I can't even use the scroll up and down feature. It's just a frozen solid block.

My display for iCloud on my desktop is the same. Magnified and can't find a way to fix it. It is the same for all the accounts in my family. It is magnified on my sign in page.

  • HT5918 how to connect 6 DVI Displays to MacPro

Apple states can connect up to 6 DVI displays to a MacPro explanation is not clear. Mixes Mini-Display and USB terminology. What does it mean?

The article you linked to includes:
Mac Pro supports a total of two single-link DVI displays. If you connect a third DVI display using a passive adapter or a display via HDMI, it will cause one of the three displays to become inactive.
Can I connect more than 2 DVI or HDMI displays?
Mac Pro supports a total of two DVI or HDMI displays when connected via the built-in HDMI port or using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. To connect additional DVI displays, use an active DVI adapter such as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter. You can connect up to six active adapter DVI displays. This requires a powered USB hub since Mac Pro offers four USB ports and you will need six to connect them all.
If your display are 1080p pr less they you can use 2 standard/passive mini displayport to DVI adapters and 4 active mini displayport to DVI adapters. If 1080p or less you do not need the dual-link adapter which are active. Yo can get less expensive active adopters.
If any of your display are greater than 1080p you need the dual-link adapter. Those included a connection to USB for power. These cost about $100 each for the Apple branded ones

  • DVI display port/ADC display port bottleneck!

My G5 dual came with ONE DVI display port and ONE ADC display port. I wish to add another monitor for editing purposes. My current monitor is an NEC multi-sync, which uses up the DVI port...leaving the ADC port empty and useless.
    1. Am I forced to purchase an Apple Cinema Display?
    2. Would it be more frugal to purchase another video card?
    3. Can I make this work even though I have bought every 'adaptor' under the sun and the ADC port is still useless?
    4. It there a 3d party adaptor that can use the ADC port to use an NTSC (television) device as 2nd monitor?
