Why is Encore CS6 Menu quality so poor/bad?

Hello All,
My client and I are frustrated on the image quality of the menu in Encore when creating a Standard Definition DVD.
The menu source is a .psd. Tried various resolutions and once the dvd is ceated the image is very pixellated and hard to read the text in the logos (see attachment). Also tried making a motion menu with that image by creating a timeline with it in P Pro. Same results.
I understand that this is SD and that the customer is playing back the 720 x 480 image on a high resolution monitor which doesn't help.
The videos portions of the DVD are OK (mpg2) and the graphics hold up a lot better in the video portions.
Would appreciate any advice on this issue as my client and I are very frustrated.
I will try and test this on another system today.
What do you think about a hardware/software (something other than Encore) solution to create a decent looking DVD?
Thanks in advance,
John
This is a full frame screen shot from the DVD.

When you bring a higher than DVD resolution image into Encore, Encore downrezzes it to the project setting when you render the menu and/or build the project.
You can only avoid that if you make the background image the correct size. You can only avoid Encore rendering if you don't add any other elements other than highlights (the layers in photoshop with =1, =2 etc.).
If any of the images are part of a highlight layer, you get big problems; I don't think that is an issue for you.
Logos have often been scaled in various ways; I wonder if that could be having an effect.
But, I did not think the image looked that bad once it had it set to the DVD pixel size and was viewing it at the size.
You certainly do not get an accurate test viewing as your client was on a large computer monitor.
Create a test disk and view on an HD TV with an upscaling player. For me that is the modern, practical test.
The other test you might do is to take the logos out of the equation by making a menu with several fonts/sizes to simulate the text issue in the menu. DVD and small text are just not a winning combination. The logos may be scaled too small for so many on one screen.

  • Help Me with Encore CS6 Menu and buttons

Hi I need help with Encore CS6 Menu's.  I have a Premiere CSs 6 video which is 3 hours long and 21 chapters.  It looks like I can get 18 of the buttons to work.  I also want to set up a exit button.  Is there a 18 button limit to a menu?  Should I be looking at using menu index's or play lists?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Ed

I assume you have a single video on one timeline, and you have chapter markers for your chapters.
A button (e.g. "play movie") links to the timeline (default is chapter one, which is what you want). The end action of the timeline is "last menu."
Commonly, a second button on the main menu goes to a chapters menu. Each chapter menu has links back to the main menu and to the next and previous chapter menus.
For EACH chapter, you create a chapter playlist with that one chapter in it. The end action of the chapter play list is "return to last menu."
There are no end actions on chapters and no overrides anywhere in the project using this method.

  • Encore CS6 Menu

Why is it that my menus for blu-ray are being encoded with mpeg 2 and not h.264, and my settings are in h.264. I thought Adobe fixed this.

  • Encore CS5.1 menu library cleared when Encore CS6 menu library installed

When I installed the Encore functional content (menu libs...) from the CS6 disk the menu libs were installed in Encore CS6 -and- the menu libraries were removed from Encore CS5.1. The menu libraries are not a separate load on Encore CS5.1. If this is expected how do I recover the lost menus?
    Ed B

The solution to this issue would be - copy the cs6 library from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Encore CS6\Library and place it at another loacation and rename it.
Now uninstall the CS6 Content and reinstall the 5.1 FC using the disc or the downloded FC you have. In this way you will recover back your 5.1 FC and can also use the 6.0 FC by pointing Encore to its location. I tried it and this works
And this problem will no longer be faced once the downloadble version of CS6 FC will be available.

  • Encore CS6 Menu Templates (From Cloud)

The predesigned menu sets and assets in Encore are not visible. The only set showing in the dropdown is "General" but there are no assets associated with it.

I had DL & installed the trial version (before CC was available) and when CC became available, then Encore went to subscription status and the "continue trial" splash screen went away (as one would expect). During the install, there were no options to include/not include the content library. I have checked the Prefs and under "Media" in points to C:\Program Files\Adobe|Adobe Encore CS6\Library. When I looked at that location, the "Library" folder is missing. I also checked the Encore forum and saw that someone else has asked the question over there and got this reply from an Adobe employee...

  • Why does Encore CS6 quit during startup and how can I get it to stop?

I am using Encore CS6 on Mac OSX 10.9.1. After spending all afternoon purchasing, researching and downloading the newest Encore (because CS5 would no longer burn anything on the new operating system), every time I open Encore, it unexpectedly quits. There is no error message, it loads Encore to the point where you can see all the Encore windows, and before asking whether you are opening an existing project or starting a new project, the program quits. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  • Why is Encore CS6 transcoding my DTS-MA HD files

I thought Encore CS6 wasn't supposed to transcode Lossless DTS files in a Blu Ray project?
But on build it is transcoding them and obviously i don't want this to happen
The music files are placed in the audio timeline.
Is there a setting to prevent the audio to transcode?

Is your specific settings in this list?

  • Why does iDVD '11 image quality suck so bad with a slideshow?

First of all, I have spent the last few days trolling forum after forum trying to understand the problem. It seems that for years and years people have been complaining about this issue and nobody ever gives a satisfactory answer.
Ok, I understand the difference between an HD 720p movie and a lower resolution DVD movie at 720/702x480 resolution. I get that. It means that the DVD version has to recalculate the lines using some interpolation algorithm. I can think of good and bad ways to do that myself - I am a software developer and an electrical engineer. I realize that a TV monitor is much bigger than a computer monitor and the lower resolution on a larger monitor won't look as good. What I am seeing goes well beyond that. I am seeing splotchy blacks, awful pixelation, moire effects in water and around just about any two parallel lines, and the occasional odd red-then-green-then-freeze frame.
Here is what I don't get: When I watch a commercial DVD on my TV, it does not look like crap. Sure, a Blu-Ray looks better, but a DVD is quite acceptable. When I watch the slideshow that I made in Aperture, assembled in iMovie, and wrote out as 720p, it looks terrific on my monitor. If I do it as 720 (Large) it also looks terrific. When I downgrade to 480p (the same resolution as a DVD), it looks fine as a .mov file. However, when I take any of these .mov files and go through iDVD to produce a DVD file, I get horrible results - it looks like I used old VHS footage that I had accidentally left in my microwave. Even changes in resolution of the input file seem to make no difference. Why is this?
I have tried using "Best Performance", "High Quality", and "Professional Quality". I would rather label them as "Lousy", "Lousy", and "Lousy". To my eye, they all look equally poor.
Is there file file format that I should be using rather than the default .mov format? .dv or .m4p? Is there some other setting I should be setting? Does the DVD media itself make a difference? I am using Kodak DVD+R media. I read somewhere that Verbatim DVD-R was the way to go. Is this true?
Finally, is there perhaps another route I should be exploring? I looked at DVD Studio Pro, but that is not affordable. I considered writing a Blu-Ray instead, but buying a burner and software is not worth it at this point. What about another app? Even on the PC, I am flexible.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie 6 as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 8 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • OSStatus Error = -35 while trying to 'Edit menu in Photoshop' using Encore CS6

While trying to edit my Encore CS6 menu in Photoshop I keep getting 'OSStatus Error = -35'. I contacted Adobe Support via chat and it was suggested that I add Photoshop CS6 to my computer since I use Photoshop CC.  I added CS6 to my computer and I am still getting the same message. I don't see an option to tell Encore to use Photoshop CS6 instead of CC.
I am using Mac Pro (Late 2013) running Yosemite 10.10.2. I have a full Adobe Cloud membership. Not sure what other information might be pertinent here. I would greatly appreciate any help/support I can get in regards to this issue.
I've tried to use iDVD to create my menus, purely out of frustration and found that there are issues with it as well. I see that these authoring programs are not being supported or updated any longer by Adobe or Apple. I have purchased Wondershare Video Creator Ultimate to burn my dvd's but the menu options are limited at best.  My goal is to create a simple custom DVD menu that looks professional using my own graphics.

This is a Mac operating system error, and not one that we see often. It is probably a reflection of permissions issues, not what version of PS you do or do not have.
Yosemite is not supported for Encore, but neither was Mavericks. Many of the issues in Mavericks appeared to be permissions. Most Adobe apps need read/write access, and those were not the defaults for the OS.
Some Mavericks users reported the following fixes their problems - I eventually assumed that somewhere in the process, it was fixing permissions. But perhaps it does more:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/6109315#6109315
And comments for these operating systems for Premiere Pro, Adobe Media Encoder, and After Effects may be helpful. (Encore does not have a support team that is active, so nothing official for it.) But there are specific bug fixes for these OSs in CC versions, so....

  • Encore CS6 not possible to avoid transcoding

Why does encore CS6 transcode some H.264 streams and some not? They are different sequences exported from the same project with the same settings out of premiere CS6. The parameters of all streams equal the settings in encore. But for some it is not possible to change the setting in encore to not transcode.

Yes, I used H.264 Bluray 1440x1080 anamorph. I guess Encore ignored the anamorph flag for some files and transcoded them a second time to 1440x1080 - the result is a visible frame with a distorted 4:3 aspect ratio. I have found a resolution. I replaced the transcoded files in the encore transcode folder with copies of the original files and renamed them like the transcoded files: "original filename"_sessionFiles_Asf_session_1_video.m4v
Perhaps its possible to avoid transcoding by simply placing renamed copies (in that name system above) of the original files in the transcode folder. I will try it in the future.

  • Why Poor DVD quality Encore CS6 with Sony FS100 MTS files from PPro CS6

I am using PPro CS6 on a MAC Pro Quad zenon with Boot Camp. On PC side I was using PPro CS6 & Encore CS6 with MTS files from  Sony NX 5U with NO Problems.
I just started using a Sony FS100 recording 1080i (60) format MTS files. When I Dynamic Link to Encore, the quality of the image is very soft compare to image from previous
projects with MTS files from Sony NX 5U.When I open a previous NX5U project, it still displays and creates an excellant dvd.Need help in solving problem.

Thanks for the advice. I tryed your method with same results.
I then tried changing project quality settings with somewhat better results
    but not good enough results.
I looked at some of my previous dvds that used mts files from my Sony NX5U
and the quality was much better
that any results I am having using the Sony FS100 mts files. Even still
pictures do not look good now in Encore.
I then tried using Roxio Creator 10 Pro to make a dvd.
The results were excellant! Video files and stills are great.
I noticed that Encore CS6 is using the "Main Concept" codec to transcode.
Has something changed in the basic
settings with my Encore and can I reset my Encore to original defaults???
Any advice would be welcomed...Thanks again.
