Why is FCPX so fragile?

Here are my specs:
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Using Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1
Using a LaCie 3TB d2 USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series Hard Drive
I've been working on this doc on and off for the last seven years.  I've recently to the hardware listed above just recently.  My old specs were a filled out MacBook Pro with a Final Cut version that was at least seven years old.  The previous versions don't really matter because they worked with the project pretty well, although at times at a slow rate.
-Separated my 60 minute documentary into 20 minute sections.
-Trashed FCPX prefs.
-Logged into other user account
-Repaired permissions
FCPX will just quit when working with a picture, regardless of the size.  It seems to just get fed up and then quit unexpectedly, although I can expect it about 5 seconds before it happens.  Why could the old system work with the stills (by the way are TIFFs and JPEGs) and this system chokes on them.
It seems that Apple sacrificed durability in coding for what looks like a fast workflow but is fragile underneath.
Does anybody have any insight into this problem?
Thank you,
Steve

In my experience, X is far better working with stills than previous versions of FCP.
If the app is crashing when you try to edit, something is wrong with the installation. You were right to start with trashing preferemces. Try this app to do clear out those files. Empty the trash and then reboot your Mac. Then try editing the stills.
Do you have many plug-ins installed?

  • Why does fcpx crash every time i try to edit titles/text??

why does fcpx crash every time i try to edit titles/text?? I'm trying to wrap up a project for work and now fcpx thinks it needs to crash every time i click on a "title" to edit it. It's making the completion of this project nearly impossible.

nope, i'm just using the select tool "a" to move my titles .. if the inspector is open, the second i click on any title in any project the whole program crashes. but with the inspector closed i can move my titles at will without a crash. i'm not sure what's allowing me to manipulate titles since you've said Lion updates haven't fixed this function. and i'm not sure what's making fcpx crash to the ground every time i click a title with the inpector open. all i know is that this little loophole i've found is working for me and has allowed me to complete my project this morning which is awesome.

  • What can I do in Adobe that I can't in FCPX? + Why does FCPX have a bad reputation

Somewhere else, I was told that disgruntled Apple users where going to Adobe and leaving FCPX
    Why is this?
What can be done in the Adobe suite of programs that isn't handled well in FCPX?
Is FCPX an all in one solution?
Does it allow me to do everything that can be done in After Effects for example? (I ask without actually knowing what After Effects is for - I've just heard it mentioned looadds)
Why does FCPX have a bad reputation?
I've read that it's not backwards compatible with previous version
That *****! But... doesn't effect me as I'm coming in as a new user
    Thanks

Different editors have different needs, and while FCP X offers some really innovative features it lacks other things that some editors need in order to be competitive/get work in their environment. It is not just what you can actually edit (read: tell a story) with a piece of software but also about format support, workflows, collaboration to name just a few.
FCP X is an editor with a few effects built in, in addition to which you can get Compressor for output and Motion for VFX. Adobe actually offers a whole suite of products that range from editing to VFX, from color grading to Blu-Ray authoring.

FCP X is not an all-in-one solution. As I said above it is an editor with a few built-in effects and titles.
After Effects is for visual effects, green screen .... stuff like that. It is quite powerful but does not actually have anything to do with editing itself (that is Premiere)

Because when it was released many features that editors were relying on/accustomed to were missing (XML support to name only one at random) which caused many to switch to Adobe or Avid. That fact that some of these features were added back in subsequent updates didn't really seem to repair the damage.
Since you are a new user get the trial version and give it a go. You will need a fast machine with lots of RAM and fast external storage.

  • Why does fcpx suddenly stop reading audio files? ever since i upgraded to Yosemite. Than when I check it on my hard drive it doesn't work as well. Only this file. Am in a trouble of delivering now. Any help?

Could be systems logs or some other system file growing.
Use OmniDiskSweeper or DaisyDisk to map what's being used.

  • Why is FCPX only using 1GB of the 16GB of memory I have available?

    Any ideas?

    Hi
    latest version Yosemite
    latest version FCPX
    300gb of 500gb used
just replaced optical drive with Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD which I'm now using as the main drive (also containing media).
    Media varies. 720p or 1080p.
Its been awful for a while now.

  • Why does FCPX keep crashing when running on MacBook Pro10.7.5, 2.66GHz Intel Core i7, 8gb 1067 Mhz DDR3

I am running Final Cut 10.0.7 on a MacBook Pro  10.7.5, wiht 2.66GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3.  It locks up and crashes a couple of times a day. My system exceeds what Apple says I have to have to run this program.  Why is it crashing?  What do you need to run it so it DOESN'T crash.  I've heard you actually need 16GB of ram.  Is that true?

Your MBP specs are higher than mine. I'm running FCPX 10.0.8 (ran 10.0.7 for a long while), 2.4 GHz i7 with 8 GB RAM and don't have the crashes you're describing. There've been reports here of problems with some 3rd party plugins. Could that be what's causing your issues?

  • Why does FCPX crash every time I use plug-in effects?

I don't understand why FCPX crashes every time I use a plug-in effect. I install the plug-in effects in the Effects folder - User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects - and I apply the plug-in effect to the clip in the timeline, but as soon as the clip is in the viewer and I open the inspector FCPX crashes. Why does this happen??
I have tried different plug-in effects, but it crashes every time I try to use the them.
    I use a FCPX trial (10.0.1) and I don't have motion 5 installed.

Ok, I need to 'fess up. The issue turns out was not the plug-in. It was my NAS. My Ethernet config was changed then changed back again so although the NAS seemed fine and accessible after the changes, clearly not everything was perfect. The FCP Events and the Project itself I am working on live on the NAS and I work directly from it. A reboot cleared up the whole problem. Dah, I'm such an idiot.
Sorry Noise Industries! Everything is good!

  • Why does FCPX not save my titles

Any ideas why titles do not save when you close down FCPX
    anyone else have this problem

It's been posted here many times.
Known bug, send feedback to Apple.

  • Why is FCPX freezing repeatedly while moving title clips?

    Hello to all.
I am facing an exasperating situation. I am at the tag end of a project and I find that FCPX is freezing whenever I try to relocate a title. Have been forcrd to repeatedly force quit! Have trashed the preferences repeatedly, have restarted and even shut down the computer, have deleted thumbnail data, but, FCPX refuses to work.
Have read other posts in which one gentleman facing a similar problem was able to shift his titles with the inspector window closed. In my case, his method of surmounting the problem has not worked.
Right now I am minded to do this:
open FCPX once again, delete the existing titles, accurately place new titles and renter the text. Shall let you know the progress.
Until then, if there is some useful input in this totally frustrating matter, I would be too happy to lap it up!
    Thanks in advance.

    An update.
I have done this: copy the 'problematic' section of the project into a new project and have tried to edit the title clips in the new project...but this too was not of help.
I noticed that the FCPX would freeze only when a playback is attempted with the clip selected. But it would not whimper were I to move the clips, extend or shorten them.
Upon this realisation, making a 'crude' assessment based upon the audio waveforms, I did my 'rough' editing of the titles...and, the finished work appeared 'decent' enough. The flaws would be certainly noticed by seasoned viewers.
While pondering over this matter, I have this hunch that this erratic behavior of FCPX could have been triggered by my doing this: I had need of placing many titles in the project, and all of the text had to be given [almost] the same size fonts, tracking, face color, outline color and width. I had in an earlier thread asked whether there was any shortcut by which one could get all these parameters into the text without having need to edit each title individually. In that thread I learnt that one needed to do such a 'custom title' in Motion, which I do not have. In a moment of 'carelessness', acting against my better judgment, I did this 'easy' way of gettting things done: copy one title which had been editied and paste it at the required spot on the timeline; this done, I would delete the earlier text and replace it with the new one.
I guess that resorting to this 'easy shortcut' had forced me  to take the 'hard long route'!
Whether this 'logic' of mine regarding the origin of the problem is correct or not, I sincerely hope that Apple would give its fans the happiness of easily adding preset parameters such as font size, face color, outline color and width etc. to one's text from within FCPX itself.
I would also like to hear from other forum members regarding this seriuos matter. From other posts I understand that I am not unique in facing this problem but others too have faced it. For those to whom videomaking is a hobby [I am not one of them], having to face or pass through this kind of problem may not affect their careers adversely, but for those who are professionals [I am not one of them!], whose livelihoods and reputations are at stake, facing this problem would be the equivalent of smelling one's goose being cooked!
I would also like the reader viewing this post to view this short video which has given me so much trouble:

  • Why is FCPX so slow?

The whole computer churns to almost a halt. Using the most up to date 17i Mac Book Pro with 8GB memory. Just done exactly the same project in a trial Adobe Premier and it sped through! I cant edit with a client on FCPX as its embarasing! I want to use FCPX but cant!

Hmm what codec are you using? Are you optimizing and making proxy media when you import media? You really have to import using proxy and optimization with projects longer than 10 minutes. Also you should have 16GB of RAM minimum. Another thing that helps is to put the media on a drive seperate from the boot/system drive and you want the media drive to be fast as can be. I'm currently edting a feature in FCP X with 4 drives in a RAID 0 configuration on a 2009 mac pro.
The experience is pretty snapy when you edit without any audio waveforms displaying and playback in Proxy mode.
Seems that apple was not really upfront about what kinda of setup one needs, but we can find out on these forums what an editor really needs.

  • Why is fcpx not detecting ex hd in the right place?

I've had this problem before but how come my external hard drive is being picked up as a camera. Its highly annoying when I try to import from a real camera and get dead slow when it starts loading video from my ex hd. and also I dont have the option of exporting projects and events to the ex hd. only to the internal hd.
    any ideas?
so I'm having issues importing / exporting to an from external hard drive

The root level is the only level that causes a problem. Open the hard drive and look at the folders at that very first level. If you have a folder titled "no_name" or "contents" or Private, or anything that FCPx thinks is an SD Card or other external hard drive, it will get confused and the drive won't show up. Put any such folders inside another folder and all is good (if that is indeed the cause of the problem).

  • Why is fcpx rendering even with prores proxy?

I am using proxy with a multicam, but both angles are proxy. how come it still has to render?

  • Importing interlaced vs. progressive MTS for FCPX

I've been doing to jewelry product video with my new Handycam HDR CX-160, and have run into a hurdle with FCPX. For some reason, FCPX won't allow me to import progressive scan MTS files from the camcorder. Why?
FCPX has no trouble at all recognizing my Handycam when I make a USB connection, and 60i formatted HD files import just fine, but the better quality 60p files won't show up in the import window.
I am stumped on how to make this work. I have figured out a moderate workaround via a suggestion to use Handbrake to convert from MTS to MP4, but there is a bit of quality loss in the process.
Could anyone please make some suggestions, or share their experiences? Thanks!
    - Jamie

I'm connecting my Handycam HDR CX-160 to the computer via USB. FCPX recognizes the camera, and also recognizes all files that are 60i formatted or of lesser quality, but FCPX does not recognize the 60p files. I have recorded both types of files onto the same memory card, and while both files are vieable on the camera for playback, FCPX only sees the 60i files.
My workaround now is to just view the camera via Finder and copy over the MTS files.
It would be nice if I didn't have to do this, so I hope we'll see some upgrades to FCPX soon so we can import higher quality files directly.

  • FCPX does not find disk

I have put a LaCie ssd disk to my MacBook and try to move a FCPX project to it. De disk is connected thorugh either a ThunderBolt or the USB3 connection but in both case FCPX fails to see the disk. The disk however is neatly shown on the desktop. Why does FCPX refuses to see this disk. I would rather expect it a nice way to separate the FCPX data from the startup disk. That is frustrated by FCPX. Is it a bug?

It turns out to be the second of the supposed causes. I had used the drive as a clone with CarbonCopyCloner and added the Final Cut Events+Projects folders at the disklevel. Disposing of the clone by repartitioning the drive as one volume makes it visible in FCPX and eligible for copying.
