Why is Firefox 4 "running", not start up; but, running so agonizingly slow?

Firefox 4 is running, not start up; but running agonizingly slow! It is absolutely infuriating-the previous version was much faster than this one-what is going on?

I have the same problem. It isn't only that it is running slow but when I am typing it is as if it pauses and then the words catch up. Also going from tab to tab there is a pause. I have high speed and it is almost as bad as being on dialup again. How do we fix this? At least before the update it ran better.

Can't get Firefox started. Instead advice given that it's already running and to close it down. BUT, Windows 7 Task manager advises that neither Firefox nor anything else is running. Firefox will not start normally, but will in safemode. How can I fix this?

Everytime I go to start firefox, it never starts, and tells me it's crashed. It gives me the option to reset firefox or restart it in safe mode. Resetting firefox does nothing, but presents me with the crash again, instantly, the split second firefox tries to run.
I've reinstalled firefox, restarted my computer etc etc. I don't and never have used any addons / extensions. I've never used anything but the default theme. I do have ~12 things on my favorites list, but that's the extent of it.
This is frustrating, as I don't like to use IE. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Firefox does not start

i am using Duke 64 bit. 50% of the times firefox just does not start. i had the same problem in 2.0.0.3 and now it is 2.0.0.4 but problem is not solved. when i use command "firefox" in X Terminal, cursor just goes to the next line without doing anything and when i do "ps -x" i can see firefox was *already* running but i do not see any windows of firefox. STRANGE.......this is from my terminal:

see, firefox is already running but i do not see any firefox window in my Windowmaker. i have also tried "wmii" and "larswm".

i have to use "kill -9 PID" to kill all those 3 firefox-processes. this happens with me everyday when i try to access firefox. any solution ?

Make sure firefox is actually stopped (check "ps axww" output for it). Kill it if it's still running somewhere.
Check your firefox profile area for files named "lock" and ".parentlock". Delete them if you find any.

Firefox does not start in Windows Vista. It can be seen in the task manager that the process is running. But nothing happens. After deleting the process it still does not work.

Are there any issues with Firefox 10 and Vista? IE works.

Did you try to wait a bit longer before restarting Firefox to give Firefox more time to close down completely?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.

Do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Firefox will not start after I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04.

I was using Firefox without issue on Ubuntu 8.04. I then upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Firefox would not start after upgrade. Message said it was already running!
I checked the System Monitor and saw it was "sleeping". I ended process. Firefox then would start, however..... I always have to go into System Monitor before I start Firefox to stop it from running (sleeping) even if I already just quit the program or after a fresh reboot.
I do not use a firewall or virus program.
My router has some sort of firewall hardware, and it is the same router I used with 8.04 with no problem.
What is going on? Why is the program sleeping when I try to start it. Why do I always get the message that it is already running (and I have to shut it down) before I can start it.
It is either a Ubuntu problem or a Firefox problem.

The workaround for the crash is linked [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=563484 HERE], under "Attachments" in the bug report. When you click that link it will show the contents of the .reg file (you can save the page as "ff7fix.reg" on your computer, and then merge it into the Windows registry, f you are comfortable doing that).

Firefox will not start, after reboot.

For a few months now Firefox will not start after I reboot my computer. In order to get it to start I click the exe then must go into task manager kill it, click the exe again, kill it again then, from there it will typically start, but sometimes it may take one or two more trys. When clicking the exe firefox will appear in the task manager under processes but will will start with ~7% CPU usage, then quickly drop to zero every time until it does actually open and start. I have ran a full system recovery and started anew after reinstalling mozilla several times failed to fix the problem. I run virus and spyware checks often and come up clean, and also run Chrome as a default browser.

You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. Running on Windows XP SP3. No problem whatsoever before upgrading to 27. Sending this from Chrome as I cannot open Firefox at all.

Thanks jschaer2000: after starting it once in safe mode, I closed Mozilla and tried several restarts in normal mode. So far, all worked:-)

Still the automatic update process bothers me: it took me several days to discover the reason to the malfunction, since when I removed the problematic version from Add and Remove Programs, I didn't pay attention at first that it was another version, not v26 which I installed from my folder.
In addition, I like to save the installation files before I run new programs and if I didn't have v26 exe file, I couldn't have operated Mozilla at all. Not that it was fun to remove and install again each time v27 didn't react, but it was better than nothing, I still prefer Mozilla over its competition.

It sounds like you may have a problem caused by an extension (maybe that avery toolbar)

Thanks for your help. I had tried starting Firefox in safe-mode before I posted this request, but it did not work. I tried to restore the system to an earlier version, but that made everything worse. Two accounts were unusable and one sort of worked, so I reloaded the operating system and now firefox works, for how long, I don't know. But thanks again for your suggestion.
