Why is Firefox 5 unresponsive and locking up my Mac ?

Firefox 4 was awful, but Firefox 5 isn't much better. I have had to force quit Firefox 5 several times. It is also very slow and at times unresponsive. It slows down my whole Mac Book Pro, and makes other Apps unresponsive at the same time.
I never had a problem with Firefox 3.6

I'm now using Firefox 6.0.2 and it is better, but please guys in the front office it ain't much better. I still have to force quit it often. It is soooo slow, and forget running another app with it. I just tried Firefox 3.6.20 again, and it is by far a smoother experience.
I can't believe that anyone at Mozilla uses this stuff. If they did they would fix it.

Why is Firefox intruding and sending updates when auto updates are turned off? This constant updating wreaks havoc with add-ons
Why is Firefox violating my computer?

I left "automatic updates" for Firefox UNCHECKED and left download when updates are found UNCHECKED. " Ask me wha I want to do" is CHECKED.
In English, that means don't automatically update and if updates are found ASK.
It does NOT mean ignore all the instructions and download!

  • Why is Firefox 4 and 5 slower than firefox 3 in Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

You told me Firefox 4 was fast, so I upgraded from the latest release of 3.xx. Immediately I started seeing a pinwheel mouse cursor when I had more than about 5 or 6 tabs showing (the pinwheel is the Mac OS X equivalent of the Windows hourglass, at least in Snow Leopard). I have the latest release of Firefox 5 and I'm still seeing pinwheels.
This happens several times a day, but not every time Firefox opens. It usually takes a few minutes for the pinwheel to show up. When it gets to where the pinwheel appears to be permanent, I Force Quit Firefox and restart it, and that helps for a while.

Did you want me to re-post this in that forum or can one of the mods from here move it?

  • Why are firefox updates (and history) lost every time I restart?

Every time I restart firefox, it indicates update is available which successfully installs. But when I restart, same message appears every time and history is lost as well.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

  • Why will Firefox 4 not run on my Mac G4, OS 10.4.11?

When prompted and encouraged by you yesterday I downloaded Firefox 4. However it was not possible to use it because it came up with the message that It "is not supported by this architecture" I then found that I could not run my earlier version of Firefox 3.6.16. So I had to delete all firefox versions, and redownload version 3.6.16 losing various previous settings in the process. I am now using the old version once more quite successfully but I am concerned that you will not be supporting it for very long

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • Safari crashes AND locks up the Mac too

Safari crashed while browsing for no apparent reason. Now will not launch, and also locks up the system when it crashes. Have to restart the computer. Tried deleting the cookies.plist file, and no change. I also tried re-installing the app, no help there either. Any suggestions?

  • Why does FireFox freeze and the only way to unfreeze it is to open the task manager and close the plugin-container.exe file??? It has been happening more and more often and it is getting VERY AGGRAVATING!!!!!

When Firefox does freeze (not responding appears in parentheses in the page tab) I am not able to access any of the webpages (the entire webpage is hidden behind a vaguely white transparent foreground) and more often than not any files I might be downloading are stopped before the entire file has been transferred - which means that I have to start those downloads from the beginning AGAIN. This has been happening for quite some time and I AM SICK AND TIRED OF IT HAPPENING!!
If it continues to happen for much longer I will swear off FireFox FOREVER!!!!! Either a program works or it does not work and lately Firefox has not worked worth a damn...........
The ONLY way to force Firefox to allow me to access it is for me to end the plugin-container.exe file process using Task Manager. Clearing there is a SERIOUS problem here that has not been resolved - why not???

The pluging container opens up unnecessary copies as the cookies/history are cleared, this is a known issue, it might be what you are seeing, and it is hoped to be fixed in some future release of firerox.
There are some hangs affecting some users, with symptoms being high cpu usage, occurring as bookmark changes or syncing is in progress, there is a work around for that.

  • Why does Firefox keep freezing/locking up?

This has been going on for at least a year. Every time I update Firefox I hope the issue will be resolved, but if anything it's worse.
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling. I reset. I turned off Hardware acceleration. I updated all of my plugins and Firefox. I tried Safe Mode. I turned off protected mode in Flash.
It has something to do with flash, I'm sure. I used flash blocker and it seemed to help, but not totally. I'll open a tab and it will freeze. Says (Not Responding). Little green processing circle will freeze as well. This happens with flash intensive sites, which these days is most sites. I tried using IE and the sites worked. It's gotten to the point that I actually have to stop using Firefox. What's the deal? Why is it STILL like this? The only resolution is to open task manager and close Firefox.

  • Why does Firefox keep freezing/locking up system (Windows 8)?

I just recently decided to switch to Firefox from chrome because I was sick of chrome's adblocker never working. Unfortunately, whenever I use Firefox, it will randomly freeze my entire system so I have to do a forced shutdown by holding the power button. When it freezes I can't even move my mouse let alone open task manager to end Firefox. Any help is greatly appreciated because I really like Firefox but it is annoying having to keep restarting my computer every 20 minutes or so. I notice that usually freezes when watching videos on YouTube, although not always. I am using Firefox 30.0 with Windows 8
    System specs:
    Dell Inspiron 15r Special Edition
    Intel Core i7 processor
    Windows 8 x64
    8GB RAM
    750GB Hard drive
    2GB AMD 7730M

Something similar happened to me at one point, and I found out that one of my RAM chips had gone bad. The way I found out was from scanning with Memtest86. Its an ISO file that you print onto a CD, then the computer will boot from it. After replacing the chip it has been running smoothly ever since.

  • Why does firefox freeze and then doesn't fully release from memory, but I have to End Process from Task Manager?

Frequently, Firefox for Windows (Vista) freezes up. I click on a link or try to go to another web page and nothing happens. The icon in the tab is just spinning, with Connecting. but it never connects. Then when I close it - if it lets me. I click to open it again and a window pops up saying that Firefox is already running, to please close it before launching it again. I have to go to Task Manager and End task from the Processes tab. It is also a resource hog including the Plug-In Container.

The pluging container opens up unnecessary copies as the cookies/history are cleared, this is a known issue, it might be what you are seeing, and it is hoped to be fixed in some future release of firerox.

  • Why is Firefox typing and cursor are slow upon a normal startup but everything works well when I restart in safe mode?

When I open FIrefox normally, the cursor movement is very jerky - seems to get stuck on every link. In addition typing in any box is delayed. When I restart with add-ons disabled and in safe mode, the cursor moves fine and typing is normal. I have disabled all my add-ons but that doesn't seem to help as each time I restart, the jerky cursor and delayed typing present again. What is wrong?

Thanks - that seems to have solved the problem

  • Why does Firefox 4 and 5 not ask anymore, it should safe all open tabs before quitting the program as it did in the 3.x versions?

Is there a way to make Firefox 5 ask when quitting the program weather it should safe all open tabs for the next time. In versions 3.x it always asked and reopened the same tabs on next program start.
I could not find the preference to get this very useful feature back or did the programmers take it out of the new versions?
