Why is Firefox is running at 200,000+ KB on Windows 7/Windows XP?

My last machine was a Dell with 2 GB of ram, Pentium M processor, and Windows XP SP3. After working with an Intel dual-core, 4 GB ram, 250 GB hard drive, 2010 MSI notebook laptop with Windows 7 professional and limited programs running on it, my machine seemed quite slow while using Firefox. I've discovered that (thru Task Manager) Firefox constantly runs at 200,000+ kilobytes at all times. My performance jumps up and forces my machine to freeze. Then, Firefox freezes... then crashes. Most of the time, I only have 3 tabs open. It takes at least 60 seconds to open up Google.com using Firefox 4, 3.5, etc. (this is while connected via Ethernet through a cable line). For this, I cannot run Firefox anymore on my computer. It slows my machine down miserably, as it slows down my work computer, and my boyfriends super dual-quad core machine also shows it running at the same 200 MB. Will this ever be fixed? I love Firefox, as I am a website designer. Working with Google Chrome seems to be my only option at this point.

  • Why does FireFox remain running and eating up full system resources everytime it crashes and 90% of the time when I close it manually?

I've been having a problem with FireFox on any machine/OS I use it on ever since v3.3. When it crashes, it will remain running in the task manager eating full resources which is often in excess of 1gb memory consumed. When I close the browser manually, it will remain running in the task manager, also eating full resources, about 90% of the time. This happens on at least 4 different computers I use on a weekly basis and it's extremely frustrating. I'm no computer expert, but what in the world could it be doing in the background when I have closed it that required over a gig of memory? Is this a normal problem? Is FireFox using people's computers/bandwidth for some sort of Grid computing project without the users being made aware of it? I love FireFox, but I'm no longer recommending it to anyone until this issue is resolved. I've spoken to several other people who've noticed the same thing, so this is not an isolated problem.

  • Why is Firefox 4 "running", not start up; but, running so agonizingly slow?

Firefox 4 is running, not start up; but running agonizingly slow! It is absolutely infuriating-the previous version was much faster than this one-what is going on?

I have the same problem. It isn't only that it is running slow but when I am typing it is as if it pauses and then the words catch up. Also going from tab to tab there is a pause. I have high speed and it is almost as bad as being on dialup again. How do we fix this? At least before the update it ran better.

  • Why does Firefox use up so much memory? My Windows Task Manager shows it using 109 Meg just now asking this question. Thanks

Pretty simple: I want to know how I can keep Firefox from using so much memory when in use. 100-200 meg is common. Thank you

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.

You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

  • Why does firefox not open the address in the browser window via dvd@ccess?

I am building a dvd with dvd studio 4 latest version on a brand new MB Pro / Snow Leapard. dvd@ccess is enabled in dvd studio pro 4 as well as on my computer. The function opens a browser window, but firefox does NOT automatically type in the required address. Therefore the browser does not look it up. This is not likely related to dvd studio pro, since dvd@ccess links to mailto: with no problem, and entourage correctly opens a new mail with the proper address. Please help. Fast – I am supposed to deliver a project! Thanks ;-)

Ok, well I found it quickly without really finding the source of the problem. I created my account here in order to post this problem, and when I received the account confirmation email to activate my account, clicking the hotlink opened a browser window WITHOUT the address! So I restarted firefox and lo and behold, I could confirm my account via the hotlink and dvd@ccess now works, even in the dvd studio pro simulator. Why this bug appeared remains to be answered. Thanks and good luck.

  • Why won't QT7 run some .mov files on a windows xp machine?

I have a 1 gig .mov file created for me by a video editor on final cut pro. It runs fine on an apple machine but my windows machines gives 2 errors: sometimes it says file corrupted; sometimes it says "error 108-an unknown error occurred".
Can't find any useful advice on the Apple website. Can anybody help or suggest anything?
    Thanks.

Not all FCP video codecs are supported on the Windows version of QuickTime.
Ask the FCP creator to pick a more Windows friendly format. For example, DV will work where DVCPRO50 may fail.
If all you want is to view the file in high quality the Animation or PHOTO-JPEG video codecs are good choices. If the file is HD then MPEG-4 settings should be used.

  • Why can't I open a window from the dock when Firefox is running?

When I start Firefox, all is well. However, when I close the first window, the Menu Bar items (FILE, EDIT etc. disappear. The word Firefox is still visible as are all the other Mac icons on the right end of the bar.
Clicking on the Firefox icon on the dock while Firefox is running does not open a new window whether in Firefox or in Finder, but clicking on a HTML icon on the desktop will open a new window and go to the site.
The Menu items may or may not appear, but the drop down menus are still active.
I just looks like the Menu headings (FILE EDIT etc) are invisible. I reiterate that Firefox is open and still active (the name is at the left end of the Menu Bar).
I have reinstalled the most recent version of Firefox. Running 10.7.5 Firefox 26.
It is irritating to have to Quit and re-open Firefox every time a want a new window after closing the previous.

  • Why is Firefox 12 using 2 000 000 KB memory?

    Hey guys!
I have no clue as to why this is, but since I installed Firefox 12 it has been hogging memory like crazy! I admit that I am one of those people who like to have over a lot of tabs open at once. More often than not I have about 110 tabs open. This is because I like to do several things at the same time and I do a lot of researching on the web.
Only recently I had 125 tabs open. Now I have grouped these into smaller groups using Tab Group or the "Panorama". This helped a little, at first. I have also closed several of these tabs and narrowed this number to about 60 tabs.
At its peak it was using 2 000 000 KB of memory. Now it's more like 1 200 000 KB at most. I just restarted Firefox about 5 minutes ago and now this number is currently at 665 000 KB. It started off with about 400 000 KB and it is still raising as time goes by without me even doing anything with it. It just sits there and steals memory. :)
The memory usage raises to a point where Firefox becomes almost completely unresponsive. From time to time I have to wait a few seconds before I can even click in this very text field and continue typing.
I am using Windows Vista SP2, 64-bit, and 4093 MB of total physical memory according to the Performance tab in Windows Task Manager. So Firefox is using half of that memory.
    What's going on here?
Also, this all makes the use of Tab Group feature almost impossible. It's very slow to open up the Tab Group or the "panorama". It is very slow and lagging.
I have an XFX Radeon HD5850 graphics card, so I wouldn't say it's due to a slow graphics card. This one is also factory overclocked. Other specs are 2.2 GHz Intel dual core CPU, X38 Intel chipset Gigabyte board, all SATA2 disk drives from Seagate and WD, 7200 RPM, top range. The memory modules are from Corsair, 667 MHz I believe, XMS with DHX.
Overall I think it's a good, solid performance desktop, and I have not had any major issues with resource hungry software except this time.
Firefox has been up and running now for some additional 10 minutes and the memory usage has increased to 695 000 KB. And counting... oh no, help, it's gonna blow up my computer! ;) It's gonna launch me into space...
Just a side note; I do use the hibernation mode a lot or the "sleep" button. But I have made sure it's not related to it by restarting Firefox several times and also rebooting to make sure to flush the RAM but it didn't help.
I do have a brand new 4 GB kit of the same brand and model that I never used up. I felt like 4 GB was plenty enough and decided to keep that second kit as a spare. So I could technically plug in that one to get 8 GB at most out of the computer. But I think it would be only counter productive... wouldn't you agree? I think the problem needs to be tackled at its core, not worked around of or swept under the carpet.
I must stop typing now... it's up at 731 000 KB now. I'm starting to feel the effects of it. Not even the memory hungry Photoshop Lightroom is using this much memory on this computer.

hello fractalogic, thank you for providing such detailed information. you have the firebug addon installed - although it is a quite powerful tool it is also known to cause some memory leaks at the moment (changes in the upcoming firefox version 15 will hopefully mitigate that). please try disabling it & only activate if you're want to use it and see if this is making a difference.
some plugins (firefox > addons > plugins) like java are also reportedly eating large amounts of memory on some machines.

    > So now my question is, how can i fix this problem?
Use the Toshiba recovery disk or the Toshiba HDD recovery option.
If you dont have the Toshiba Recovery disk try the HDD recovery:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
This works only if the recovery image files from Toshiba are still on the HDD:
If you installed the system using another disk as Toshiba recovery disk, this recovery option will not work.

Can be Add-ons. Start up Fx in Safe Mode to test by holding down the Option key. This will run without any Add-ons. If it's OK like that, disable them all and then add them back one at a time to see which one is responsible.
