Why is Firefox (Mac) launching on startup?

I am running MacOS 10.7.5. It seems like around the time I upgraded to Firefox 18, it started to launch upon Startup. I have verified that my Preferences Login items does not include Firefox. My general System preferences are set not to restore windows on Startup.

* Control-click on the Firefox Dock icon and uncheck 'Open at Login'
* Click Accounts (in the System row of the System Preferences window)
** Click the Login Items tab
** Click on Firefox in the list
** Click the Minus (-) button

  • Why does Firefox not launch after safe boot?

    Folks:
I've been using ML for several months, no particular issues, yesterday as part of the monthly maintenance I did a safe boot, and after that firefox will not launch.  Other 3rd party apps will launch, and of course Safari will . . . but, any thoughts as to why FF would go "limp"?  When I click on it in the dock the icon bounces but then returns to the dock . . . I tried to launch it from the application folder and from the "previous application" launcher . . . .  I tried it in a "guest" account that is never used . . . no difference.  I did try to do something in the Terminal, but since I'm thinking that very soon I'm switching up to Mav, I haven't bothered to figure out how to add my regular user account to the sudoers list.  But, I did try to launch FF in my admin account by the regular methods yesterday, no luck.  Any ideas why this is happening . . . to me?  Solutions are better, but, conspiracy theories also accepted . . . . =8 - 0
    e.e.p.

Ran "Repair Permissions" several times . . . seems to be fixed.

  • Why does Firefox run auto on startup?

I want a browser which can be screend only when I choose to use it. When it runs on startup, it is almost full screen, and gets in the road of email work etc.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

You can use the MSConfig program or the Autoruns utility to see which software and services are getting started (be cautious with disabling services).

It is possible that a program tries to open the default browser, so you can try to set another browser as the default browser to see if that has effect.
Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

  • Why does my mac show in Startup Disk section of System Preferences that I have OS X Lion Server?

I have bought my Macbook pro half a year ago and I have recently installed Windows 7 on it in addition to OS X Lion. The problem is that Startup Disk in System Preferences shows that I have a Server version, while I don't. How can it be possible? And is it possible to fix it?

You should post that on the Boot Camp  forum, that is where all the Boot Camp and Windows guys hang out.
    Good luck.

  • Why do I get errors on startup related to nsBlockListService.js (and related VERY slow startup of Firefox)?

Every time I open Firefox, I get several javascript errors that a "script has become slow or unresponsive" referencing line 641 of file nsBlockListService.js. I took a look at the file and it looks like this javascript is trying to do some kind of online lookup at startup. I've tried disabling the blocklist in about:config as well as renaming "blocklist.xml" (suggestion from an online search) but nothing has worked. In my opinion, it is extremely bad design to make an online lookup a startup dependency - Firefox takes well over 5 minutes to load and will sometimes hang - I am thinking of switching to Opera - programs that cannot even start are lame IMHO. I am not the only one experiencing this issue - why is there no posted fix? Why is Firefox even trying to do "anti-phishing/anti-malware" when my antivirus already does it for me? It seems to me it is just another way for Google to gather data about browsing habits. Tying the use of client software to any sort of online server is bad design and unstable in the long term since there is no way of knowing how long the server will be available. Firefox's startup sequence should run independent of any third-party services. It doesn't make sense to force every user of Firefox to wait 5 minutes every time they open the browser, just to perform some sort of "blocklist check". The last time I took a look at the list of blocked servers, ther were only about 20 on there. What a waste of time! How can this check be disabled?

  • Why does Firefox try to launch Adobe and/or Quicktime when I close Firefox? What is it loading into those programs?

When I shut down Firefox, it tries to start Either Adobe Reader, Quicktime, or both. It has done this ever since the first time I installed an used version 4. The applications do not actually launch, as in a window opening, but they are then present as a process in the system, and I have to close them from the Task Manager. It usually launches just one, but, if it's trying to launch one, and I use Task Manager to close it, it then launches the other. If I hurry and stop that one, Firefox reports that it messed up, and wants me to keep using the Internet for its own purposes that have nothing to do with what I was using the Internet for. This never happened under previous versions of Firefox. Do I need to revert to a previous version? I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security, and it shows I have no malware or the like on my computer, which could cause this. So, why is Firefox trying to do things I did not ask it to, and then expecting me to let it phone home to tell about it when I stop it. By the way, out of good practice, I often close down my Internet connection before closing Firefox, (in case I do get something like a Key Logger loaded, to prevent it from sending its final report before the cache is cleared), but this also happens when I have not yet closed my Internet connection before closing Firefox, so I do not think that is the issue, nor should it be. Your question below about when it happens does not provide for the answer "Every time Firefox Closes", so I picked the closest such answer.

This can be caused by clearing the cookies via [[Clear Recent History]].<br />
    * Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" > [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings
You can try to exclude the cookies to test that.<br />
You can let all cookies expire when you close Firefox to remove unwanted cookies and keep the ones with an allow exception.
    * Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Keep until": "I close Firefox"
If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the cookies when you close Firefox then Firefox also tries to clear the cookies from plugins like Flash and starts a plugin-container process for each plugin and possibly for each cookie (?) and that can add extra time if there are a lot of cookies to remove and also can cause an unresponsive script error to appear.

  • When accessing eBay with Firefox and launching a search, I get less results/hits with Firefox then when using Internet Explorer, why? Try it, you'll see.

For example access eBay with Firefox and launch a search on the word Frankenstein: you'll get something like 23,671 results (if you search in ''All categories''). Then quit the Firefox browser and load Microsoft Internet Explorer instead; access eBay again and repeat the very same search: this time you'll get 25,383 results. These are reral figures that I tried at 19:21 on March 20, 2014. Why does a search on eBay through Firefox report less hits than the very same search through Internet Explorer? Using Firefox rather than Microsoft Internet Explorer automatically means missing hits/results/items on eBay: that doesn't make sense but it does happen. Why is it so? Thank you, somebody, for shedding light on this problem.

Try this steps and try to load the same once again!!!
    Hello,
Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
Further information can be found in the [[Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox]] article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

Sync isn't a "cloud service" to back up miscellaneous user selected files. Only specific Firefox user data and preferences are synchronized.
