Why is firefox slower than explorer on windows 7?

firefox runs slower than explorer in windows 7. New laptop. I notice it when switching pages while on craigslist. Does not happen on other computers running xp or vista.

Some of your extensions might be the cause of the problem. Try starting Firefox in Safe Mode then going to Tools--Addons--Extensions to see if one of your extensions is causing a problem.

• Why is firefox slower than before the reset?

The past 8 weeks Firefox has been extremely slow. I've tried safe mode and all the other web suggestions and finally did the 'Reset'. Now Firefox is slower than it was before the reset. Google, Duck Duck Go and IE. I've also tried Safari, which I didn't like, but all of them were faster than Firefox. Can anybody help me? I'm not that computer savvy to do a clean install and don't the $$ to have it done. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you can do a clean install by following these instructions:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

• Why is java slower than C and C++

Hi Guys:
I would like to know why Java is slower than C and C++ in terms of compilation speed...
Does it have to do with the fact that Java compiles to byte code first and then the JVM translates byte code to machine code which your processor can understand. whereas C and C++ compiles directly to machine code...
Any ideas on that,...let me know..

It's not necessarily. I would suggest that it always is; whencomparing
specific tasks.I would suggest that is never is (significantly)
when non-trivial and non-specialized applicationsare
involved. Requirements and design always have a
much greater impact. There's no doubt that the design is the most
important
aspect when writing a program, but assuming those
things
are equal, the fact is that a c program will be
faster.Yes, but given the fact that there is almost zero chance that the requirements, design and implementation will be optimal, it means that the real differences between the languages are insignificant compared to the real difference caused by the other factors.
In the theorectical world C/C++ is faster. In the real world, most of the time, it is not significant.

• Safari MUCH slower than Explorer on same computer. Why?

I have Comcast cable internet and I've noticed that my Safari (1.3.2) has been getting increasingly slow, very slow over the past several weeks. So I've been using Explorer (5.2.3) which is blazing fast comparatively. Why is this and is there anything I can do to Safari to get the same performance I'm getting from IE?
Safari has all my bookmarks. I've done the import bookmarks thing into IE but it just creates a "Bookmarks.plist" which, as far as I can tell, does nothing. Also my email application automatically launches Safari for links in email and I can't figure out how to get it to launch IE instead.
So if I can get these latter two issues resolved I'm fine using IE. So I'll take advice on that as well.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Safari 1.3.2

Internet Explorer has not been supported by Microsoft for some time. It is not as secure as current browsers. Firefox, Camino, Mozilla, Opera would be viable free alternatives to Safari.
Safari
If you are experiencing slower than usual operation, there are some steps you can take to perhaps improve the speed:
General - System Maintenance is important. Have a look at this MacWorld article for guidance.
Safari - Safari menu>Empty Cache is a good start.
Unplug your cable box, wait 30 seconds, plug-in to reset your ISP's address.
Go to your Network>TCP panel. Select "configure IPv6". Set to "off". Select "apply".
Go to your User Library>Safari folder. Move the Icon folder to the trash. This folder holds the small image files appearing next to the web address in the address bar. This file can become corrupt slowing things down. When you move it to the trash, Safari creates a new folder on the restart. Over time, the icon file rebuilds itself based on sites you access.
You can also move the Safari preference file .com.apple.safari.plist to the trash. When you restart Safari you'll need to reset your custom preferences, so mark them down for reference before moving the file. This file is accessed by a number of applications including Mail. Each time the file is accessed it is susceptible to corruption. Trashing the old gives you a fresh version. The file can be found at User>Library>Preferences
Restart Safari after completing the above.
There are other steps, however, I think this is a good start. Post back with results.

• Why is Firefox button not default for Windows XP?

I know that the Firefox button can be shown on Windows XP too by hiding the Menu Bar. But why is it not default? If Windows XP users do not know that Firefox button can be shown by hiding Menu Bar, they will not only not be able to access the Firefox button but will also not be able to enjoy tabs-on-titlebar. Describe Mozilla why it is not default???

One thing to keep in mind about Chrome is that Google started with a clean sheet of paper in (what?) 2008 when creating a new browser. Firefox has roots from Netscape in 1995, so some of the Gecko base code is pretty old. Plus, Google has a helluva lot more money to spend on developer (some of whom have been hired away from Mozilla) salaries, where many Mozilla developers are from the "community" and are unpaid volunteers.
I am running the nightly Minefield 4.0b13pre development version on WinXP and don't see tabs in the titlebar as with the Vista and Win7 version screenshots I have seen. With a "stock" Profile, when I hide the Menu bar and select the menu item for Tabs on Top, the only thing in the Titlebar is the Firefox button on the left side of the Titlebar. There are no Tabs in the Titlebar. Maybe there is something that I don't understand about the tabs-in-titlebar feature in 4.0??
As it is with WinXP that is very unappealing to me, so I have a few Profiles that I am playing with that have different modifications that make better use of the Titlebar area. In one Profile I have all my addon Toolbar buttons in the Titlebar - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/personal-titlebar/ - which places anything that is on the Menu bar into the Titlebar when the Menu bar is hidden.
Overall, I haven't used the Menu bar since like 2004 - to me it was always a waste of one toolbar worth of browser viewing area "real estate". I have been using the Compact Menu extension, and the various CM replacement extensions over the years since, to reduce the Menu bar items down to one button on the Nav bar that provides a drop-down menu, which can be activated with the Alt, as the Firefox button / Menu bar now works. It could be said that I have been using the Firefox menu button for 7 years now - LOL.
No browser that I have seen, except for Chrome, doesn't have an option to show a complete Menu bar - removing it completely would be a huge mistake, the option to hide is good enough. Firefox 4.0, Opera 10 & 11, along with IE8 did it a lot better than Google, IMO.
Between Google forcing that damn "updater" program on their users and not having a Menu bar at all, it's gone from my XP desktop and I haven't used it in any months on my Linux netbook.

• I have found that my Mac Book Pro 15 inch late 2011 is slower than my PC Windows 7 for certain downloads, and working with iPhoto.  Would adding RAM be helpful in speeding up this process.  Currently I have the stock 4GB RAM, and storage 500GB HD drive.

• Why is Firefox slow after latest update?

I just updated to v24 and it is really lagging a lot. I've tried resetting, disabling add ons, updating add ons, restarting in safe mode... the whole nine yards. I've done every troubleshooting I can think of and it is still really laggy and slow. I have Windows 7 and a 64bit system. I didn't have this problem until the latest update.

This always seems to happen with updates. They fix a bunch of bugs, but create new ones, or don't fix old persisting ones. I was under the impression that Firefox speeds up with every update, but it would seem to be the opposite. I am perturbed that users have to jump through hoops to find workarounds. eg. Things were working just fine before, now that it isn't after the new update, we have to delete old user profiles, dig through subfolders to find duplicate files created to delete, and restart from scratch. Which can take hours of your time. All because Firefox messed things up. If Firefox broke it, they should fix it. Not us, we don't get paid to do their job. I'm always for "if it's not broke, don't break it, so you don't have to fix it." Also what's the point of having a "hardware acceleration" feature, if it doesn't work?

• Anyone has any idea why KT400 is slower than KT333?

We have heard and seen reviews that MSI KT4 Ultra is(was) slower than KT3 Ultra(2), so as other manufacturers KT400 boards. All seem to be slower than KT333.
Anybody know why? or have read any studies on this issue?

I have no idea, but Mobo manufacturers are rushing new products to the market to be the first with 333, 400, what's next?  My strategy is to read the reviews but wait until the board (or CPU) is sub top and buy it when the bugs have been ironed out (or well documented in fora like this) and the price has come down.  Sorry, I am Dutch!

• Safari and Firefox much slower than my old Windows notebook

I'm a new Mac user. I have a new MacBook late 2008, OS 10.5.8. Loading web pages is much slower on the mac than my 3 year old Windows XP machine. My former router was a LinkSys, now I have a brand new Airport Extreme.
It works the same way on any network, home or elsewhere. I've tried fixing disk permissions. I can go to Google for example, click on a new page and wait up to 8-10 seconds for the new page to load. The bar at the bottom of the page shows activity.
I'm using the Windows machine to surf now, until I can get this figured out.
I'd greatly appreciate any help. My Macbook is great other than for web.
Thank you.

Sig and others,
Thanks for your comments. This is getting a little scary for a rookie. Is this something I can safely do with no knowledge on networking, etc? That's kind of why I bought a mac. Is there an Apple Support document or thread that will guide a new user on this kind of issue. I'm still using the old PC laptop for web because of the speed issue.
The support guys at the retailer are blowing me off... PC vs Mac kind of deal.
Thanks for your help.

• Why is Firefox slow on Wireless but fast on Wired?

I have an HP Laptop 6730b which was given to me from my company. When I am at work, and connected to our LAN by an Ethernet Cable, Firefox runs perfectly fine and starts up super fast.
Then when I come home and turn on the Wireless on the laptop, Firefox takes like 20 seconds to startup and 20 seconds on every click. Whether clicking on a link of the same website or clicking on a favorite in my favorite tab, it takes 20 seconds to "Think" first then it loads quickly. This "thinking" part is what's killing me and it ONLY HAPPENS ON WIRELESS!!!

Actually, here is exactly my problem: I bring my work laptop home with me. I connect to my wireless at home and my internet works just fine. Through Internet Explorer 6.0 that is.
But with Firefox, its super slow. Takes 20 seconds to open, and 20 seconds on any link or favorite I click on.
And here is the confusing part: the problem goes away when I log into my company's network through the VPN client. Once logged in there, Firefox is back to normal and fast again.
Only when I'm not on VPN at home, does Firefox give me this problem. I have Firefox on my personal computer at home and it goes fast, so why does it give me a problem here on my work computer. Heck even IE 6.0 works normal on my wireless. It's just mind boggling. I would normally install Safari but my company won't allow it at this time.

• Why does firefox slow down when you reopen it whilst a file is still downloading?

If im downloading a file and close the browser so that only the download manager is left showing ion the taskbar and then attempt to reopen firefox to browse something new, it runs incredibly slowly.
So slow in fact that I have to close it (which in itself takes a while) and use internet explorer until the downloading has finished.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Why Safari is worst than Explorer?

My old Dell Window XP computer is much faster to access a web page than my brand new iMac G5. Can somebody please explain to me why in the future my next computer should be a Mac instead of a Window computer?
Frank Secco

Well, Frank, I guess if you think speed of accessing the internet equates with the quality of a computer then your Dell is probably better. I doubt that the overall true quality can equal the Mac. Can you provide the URL of a page that is slow to load on a Mac?

• Why does firefox startup with previous history window

Why does my Firefox (3.6.17) now always startup with a window on the left of screen displaying all the previous url's I have used grouped into 'Today', 'Yesterday', 'last 7 days', 'May', 'April'?
I cannot remember changing any setting for this to happen and now I cannot find how to turn off this annoying window.

That are probably JavaScript window.open() calls that specify window dimensions.
You can divert those to a new tab.
