Why is firefox so insanely slow, sticky and sluggish?

As I'm typing this in firefox the letters are popping on the screen about a good 20 plus seconds later. I like a lot of the features it offers but my God it is so utterly, insanely and maddeningly slow, sticky, sluggish, torpid and might as well toss in the entire thesaurus.

Hi Greg,
Have you tried emptying the Firefox cache? If not, In Firefox, from the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data. Make sure Cache is checked, and then click Clear Private Data Now.
Have you tried trashing the Firefox app and downloading and reinstalling Firefox? Make sure and save your Firefox bookmarks: Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks, under active bookmark manager, file-export.
Also, anytime apps slow down even if it's just one, check your free drive space. Select your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, press Command + I that will prompt the Get Info window. Click
the black arrow next to: General so it faces down. You will see: Capacity and Available Minimum drive space shouldn't less than 15% of the total drive. Some users say 10%, some say 20%, so I aim toward the middle. If indeed your short on drive space, transfer files to an external source.
Also, try running Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions.

  • I have IE & Firefox on both my laptop and desktop. Why is Firefox so much slower than IE7? Firefox seems to take forever to load pages!

I have a HP laptop & Dell desktop with IE7 and Firefox. I use Firefox more as I like it better than IE, yet the pages in Firefox load so slow. I thought the new version of Firefox was so much faster, but it seems to drag along and take forever to load pages. Why is this??

  • Why does Firefox try to launch Adobe and/or Quicktime when I close Firefox? What is it loading into those programs?

When I shut down Firefox, it tries to start Either Adobe Reader, Quicktime, or both. It has done this ever since the first time I installed an used version 4. The applications do not actually launch, as in a window opening, but they are then present as a process in the system, and I have to close them from the Task Manager. It usually launches just one, but, if it's trying to launch one, and I use Task Manager to close it, it then launches the other. If I hurry and stop that one, Firefox reports that it messed up, and wants me to keep using the Internet for its own purposes that have nothing to do with what I was using the Internet for. This never happened under previous versions of Firefox. Do I need to revert to a previous version? I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security, and it shows I have no malware or the like on my computer, which could cause this. So, why is Firefox trying to do things I did not ask it to, and then expecting me to let it phone home to tell about it when I stop it. By the way, out of good practice, I often close down my Internet connection before closing Firefox, (in case I do get something like a Key Logger loaded, to prevent it from sending its final report before the cache is cleared), but this also happens when I have not yet closed my Internet connection before closing Firefox, so I do not think that is the issue, nor should it be. Your question below about when it happens does not provide for the answer "Every time Firefox Closes", so I picked the closest such answer.

This can be caused by clearing the cookies via [[Clear Recent History]].<br />
    * Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" > [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings
You can try to exclude the cookies to test that.<br />
You can let all cookies expire when you close Firefox to remove unwanted cookies and keep the ones with an allow exception.
    * Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Keep until": "I close Firefox"
If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the cookies when you close Firefox then Firefox also tries to clear the cookies from plugins like Flash and starts a plugin-container process for each plugin and possibly for each cookie (?) and that can add extra time if there are a lot of cookies to remove and also can cause an unresponsive script error to appear.

why is firefox running so slowly?

Can be Add-ons. Start up Fx in Safe Mode to test by holding down the Option key. This will run without any Add-ons. If it's OK like that, disable them all and then add them back one at a time to see which one is responsible.

  • Why does Firefox not open my windows and tabs from last time until I have tried starting 3 or 4 times?

I have this problem with opening Firefox:
My Startup options are set to "When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time"
However, each time I start Firefox, by clicking the icon in the Taskbar, it opens with a single blank tab.
I repeat this using "Open New Window" and when I have up to 3 windows, all with single blank tabs open, I close them all. Once more I use "Open New Window" which only then opens with my windows and tabs from last time.
Naturally, this induces initial panic each time, because I dread the thought of losing all my current tabs.
    What is going on here?
    How can I fix it?
    < Firefox 27.0.1 with Windows 7 Home Premium.>

This started happening to me with the upgrade to v30. Previously, new windows did the proper thing of showing previous tabs/windows.
I have history on, not in private mode, and have cleared cache.

  • Why is Firefox running super slow and IE runs great? New details 03/29

Fire Fox was running great, and then for some reason, it starting runnning extremely slow. When I type it is slow to appear on the screen, ads from websites are jerky, and even the circle spins slowly for every web load/refresh. I went as far as uninstalling Fire Fox to include favorites and associated data, re-downloading and installing. This did not help either. I had to use IE to even ask for help, its that bad. AVG Virus scan and AVG PC tune up fixed problems and several reboots did not help. Did not crash. Please help, I dont like IE.

I had same problem. At least in my case it's due to Nvidia Graphics Card using 3D rendering feature.
When I played videos on YouTube Firefox was loading these DLL:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision\Nv3DVStreaming.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision\nvSCPAPI.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision\nvStereoApiI.dll
Disabling Nvidia 3D crap fixes the problem for me!!

  • Why has firefox become so slow and it use to be so fast, why do pages take so long to load now.

Firefox use to be very fast. Now it takes a long time for pages to load. There is no malware or spyware. Hardware is working right. Have started using Safari to get the speed I use to get before, but I miss Firefox. I disabled all my addons and plugins and still at times it reminds me of dial up. I have a cable connection of +15 mps. I also constantly clean my cache so it isn't that. IE is much, much faster as well. I have totally uninstalled it and reinstalled it as well, but it doesn't help.

Maybe it is a problematic add-on? At the top of the Firefox window, select Help<Restart With Add-ons Disabled. This will start Firefox in safe mode. If you notice anything is faster, than chances are the problem you were having was an extension. Disable all of them, then begin enabling them one by one. Restart each time you disable an add-on. If you notice Firefox is slow after enabling a certain add-on, then, problem solved (hopefully).
Another thing you can do is install FasterFox, a helpful add-on that increases the speed of Firefox. Download here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fasterfox-9148/

  • Why my Firefox is to slow?? Same as GoogleChrome?? Only Internet Explorer is working good! And i want to know Firefox its to slow open web sites! I want to use Firefox but i do no not wht to do is to slow! help me pls!

Srry ill explain very bad myself there! The problem is at the time the Firefox its connecting to a "X" website, it takes to much time get in on the website =/, I got the same problem with GoogleChrome! But if i use Internet Explorer all works perfectly, but I dont want it to use IE, I want Firefox ^^ and I not know wht to do, I cleaned the registry, cleaned the cache and cookies mmmm I ´ve Avira Antivirus on the computer i did a full system scan and everything looks ok also I did a scan with MalwareBytes` Anti-Malware and all its ok again, I not know wht else to do!!! I turned off the avira and firewall of the windows 7 64 bits and didnt work too. Help me what can I do?

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

  • Why is firefox becoming extremely slow or stuck when choosing a website in win 7 64-bit pro?

when starting a new website from search or bookmarks it starts with connecting and collecting data from the requested website but it get stuck or is extremely slow. One solution is to click update button several times. Is there a way to solve this problem? I have tested both stable firefox 6 and firefox 7 beta. This is not happening in win xp pro or other windows xp versions. Internet explorer (64-bit) is working fine, but I want to use firefox.

Oh just so no one is confused I did not create this question on the actual laptop I am talking about (thats why it says my OS is XP)

  • Why is Firefox such a horrible browser and how did it get popular?

'' locking this thread before it gets out of hand - This is a Firefox support form, not a forum for personal opinions about Firefox or Mozilla. If you want Firefox support please ask for it.''
I can't use Firefox, or "Crashfox", more than an hour without crashing. I have a new computer, have tried every fix known to man, so I don't need any "tips".
Due to my endless efforts to fix the many shortcomings of Firefox, I can say without a doubt that its Firefox. I have no clue how this browser gained any popularity or why anyone would continue to use it. I've lost more data than I can imagine because Crashfox just quits. It can't handle any type of load at all. 5 tabs open and its done. I can have 30 open in Chrome and it works like a champ.
I just switched to Chrome and it kicks Crashfox's ass all over the place. Faster, more stable, and just plain better. Hands down, no questions about it. Good luck catching up to Chrome Mozilla.
AND, IF YOU WANT TO BLAME THIS ON THE PLUGINS, THEN DISCONTINUE SUPPORTING THEM. IT STILL FALLS ON MOZILLA.
Why did I post this, because I feel after all of my inconvenience, i should be able to at least make one comment about Crashfox. This post will probably be removed because no one wants to face the fact that Crashfox is inferior. Very inferior.

    the truth stings.
the only way to provide support would be to rebuild Firefox.
Chrome spanks Firefox in all bench tests. I even used a FF install w/ no addons. No contest. Chrome hands down.
    Firefox is officially bloatware.

  • Why is firefox twice as slow as IE or chrome? The speedtest is consistent. I really like firefox but the speed thing is annoying.

I have 18 M dsl speed. It is fast. Firefox consistently tests at 8.xx-9.xx M, while IE and Chrome come in at 17.xx-18 M. I have uninstalled firefox, erased all traces of it; loaded a brand new install and tested speed in a clean copy, without any add-ons, bookmarks, etc. The speed was the same...slow. I really LIKE Firefox, and will not give it up, but this speed thing is annoying. Any suggestions? Yes my computer is old, (CPU = 2M), but IE and chrome have no problem.

if you are using Charter Security or F-Secure and having performance issues on sites using flash please make sure that '''enhanced process monitoring''' is '''disabled''' in advanced settings > computer > deepguard since it might interfere with adobe flash' [http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html protected mode].

  • Why is FireFox 7.02 slower than FireFox 7.01?

After upgrading FireFox to 7.02, the browser became really slow. The letters don't appear when I type. It only appears after I am done typing. Sometimes the pages don't load. And opening up a tab takes longer. Loading speed is very slow.
My computer runs perfectly fine, just not the browser. My internet connection is excellent.

I am having exactly the same problems. I have noticed that when a website or link fails to load properly, I have to click the link a second time and about half the time that seems to work. There is clearly a problem and I am anxious for Foxfire to fix this problem!

  • Why is Firefox 6 so SLOW?

What gives? Ever since "updating" to FF 6, EVERYTHING is extremely slow. Gmail takes up to 3 minutes to load (after numerous clicks on "Reload tabs". Other sites just come up with a blank page, or just never finish loading. The green "busy" symbol will sit and spin forever, even after a page has apparently loaded. On some pages the photo placeholders never load the thumbnails, just empty boxes; sometimes fixed with "reload tabs" from the drop-down, sometimes not. Never had this problem in the past. Machine is an SYX Systemax, ASUS board, 12 G of RAM, Win7 64-bit, dual Radeon video cards, Crossfire enabled, High-speed wireless connection. Any help greatly appreciated before I go back to 5.0. Thanks in advance.

I got the thing to zip right along. Here is what I did:
First followed the advice from above:
Go to: Tools -> Options -> Advanced, and uncheck "use hardware acceleration when available
Secondly, i thought Firefox added a bunch a crap I don't use so I went to add-ons and erased and or removed everything I didn't add myself.
Closed Firefox - DO NOT RESTART!
Shut the machine off, waited for a couple of minutes fired her back up and Firefox 6 runs just as fast as my old version.
